ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

What a joke! Total rip-off for sellers. They say they have donated over $3,000 (whoopie) to charities, which I can only imagine is. **************% of their profit.
I would NOT ever recommend selling on THREDup. If you want cash for your clothes go your local consignment store (much better return) And if you want to donate to a charity, donate your clothes directly to the local charitable thrift store, where they can sell them and you'll get to support a charity and get a charitable donation receipt that you can write off of your taxes. As for THRED up, Ive already written them off. Fed up with THREDup!
Besides them not accepting mamy of my items which were in great condition and after paying the bag fee I barely made any money off of the items that they did accept. I'll be looking for a different site to sell my items on.
They sold my items for $110 and gave me $2.51. This is an absolute rip-off and I don't understand how they can do this to consumers and still have a business. You are better off using your items as cleaning rags because you won't even get enough money back to buy used rags.
I sent a clean out bag with lots of brand name clothes, some had tags on, some I'd never worn but no tags. It seems they accepted lower priced items and they didn't accept higher priced items, so that they can resale them at somewhere else and make profit under the table. I've sent e-mail to them a few time to object the acceptance decision and the standard. Then they gave me bogus reasons/excuse they didn't accept!
Do not send your clothes to this place. It is nothing like it's advertisements. I have tried to send 2 fully loaded bags to them. The first one was completely rejected after 2 months of waiting as to it had a strong odor to it. I challenged them because I am a smoke free house and I freshly laundered what wasn't new with tags as per their instructions. I complained when one of their head people sent me a questionnaire about how satisfied I was with this service and the did send my bag back free of charge because I wanted to see if infact it did have an odor. The only odor it had was a scented laundry cleaning smell. The next bag I sent I only sent brand named barely worn shoes and children's clothing almost all still with tags. This time on clothing that had been worn I laundered in unscented detergent. The whole bag was denied again. No reason given and I could not get my bag back because the Assurance plan needed to be paid up front this time but wasn't needed the time before? I do believe they keep your clothing and resale it for their profit. These people are frauds and scammers. Thank goodness I took pictures and inventoried everything I sent in the second bag. Because everything I sent in the first one did not come back. I'm waiting for it to pop up on their site for sale!
I sent a brand new Halston Heritage dress, with $579 tags attached, Prada shoes (no kidding) Ralph Lauren collection moto jeans ($690), nearly new shoes in the box ($475) and about 20 other items and my payout so far was $42.05. Not to mention I host a very popular blog and I have referred over 50 people to their site. TOTAL RIP OFF.
Echoing what others have posted here - I sent a huge bag of items, and after the bag fee/shipping fee, got a whopping $2.61. Understand they have to make a profit, but I think the margins are fairly ridiculous. Additionally - I bought items from the site and after returning most of them, it's taken nearly a month for them to process my return, meaning I now have to use the credit from my return, and then probably start this process over again. Seems like their aim is to inconvenience you to the point of just giving up and letting them keep your money.
I sent a full bag of nearly new clothes to thredup and all they paid was $6.80. After taking out 4.99 for bag, I got $1.82. Run don't walk from this site. It is a joke!
I sent in more than $300 worth of clothing, all of which was in excellent condition. It included MissMe jeans, clothing from Maurices and a pair of boots from Nordstrom. According to ThredUp, they could only take two of my items and I got an upfront payout of $1.70. I thoroughly regret sending my clothing to them and will never be doing it again.
On their shipping instructions it says just give your bag to your post office. They do NOT say the post office will then have to transfer it to FedEx, which can take up to a month. Then thredsup says they will notify you when they receive it. They did not. Now 3 months later I am told it will be another month. Did they notify me? NO. I had to contact them.
BAD OPERATION. DO NOT USE THEM.
Hi Joanna,
Sorry to hear you had a negative experience with the processing of your clean-out bag. You should have received an email once your bag arrived and after it's processed. Please send an email to support@thredup.com, we'd love to find a way to improve your experience.
I sent them over $600 worth of clothing; only 2 items hadn't been purchased in the last year. Everything else was recent, it was all clean and in perfect, new condition. What did I get for it? $2.25. And these weren't bargain basement items: Northstyle, J. Jill, Lucky brand, Aeropostale, etc. I might as well have thrown it all away.

I orders lovely boots online and they were sized improperly. They didn't have an actual size on the boot. It appears that someone guessed at the size and sold it as such. I am generally a size 8, but bought the 8.5 because I loved the boot. They were super small (felt like a 7 or 7.5) and therefore needed to be returned. Since I didn't have the best experience, I wanted a refund as opposed to store credit. They charged a fee for both return shipping and return processing. The used boots that didn't fit ended up costing me $16 to return because they were sized incorrectly. Absolutely ridiculous.
Hi Jessica,
We are sorry to hear about the oversight with your order. Our polka dot promise guarantees that any item purchased will arrive as described and we don't break promises! Please email support@thredup.com and customer support will get this resolved right away.
Thredup is a great site to find bargains on a wide range of clothing brands for women and kids; however, the prices have definitely gone up in the past few years as he reimbursement for sellers has gone down to next-to-nothing.
When I first began using Thred up I really enjoyed it and felt that it was a fair service to recycle clothing. As the years passed and it became bigger, they started giving me less and less for the money they would give me back and even added a service charge on top of the fee to get the unwanted items. Last time the 2 combined charges were 20.00or more, leaving me with hardly anything. I have since discovered other sites where I can buy/sell independently.
Hi Meilynn,

ThreadUP start paying attention to your reviews. CLEARLY there is a problem with shipping that is not being addressed when you have "several" complaints about shipping. Additionally, when others are saying it is taking 3 months to inventory items there is also a break down. WHO is your operations person because they need to be fired with this lack of attention to details and to processes - BOO! Next time I will walk into the consignment store I have used or sell on POSTMARK. BOO BOO
Hi Katherine,

Over the past year I went from getting about $30 per bag to $0... or even $-4 because they started to charge $9.99 per shipping... I get that they have a business to run, but something tells me they be gettin greedy lately, which is honestly too bad, because I used to really like this service! Hope they stop ripping people off and get back to how they used to be...

I sent in around 20-30 items, most of which consisted of J. Crew and Madewell clothing. I got $5 back less the $6.99 for the shipping. There was zero mention of any of those items in their email. Please do not use this service, it's a total scam and I am super mad that I fell for it.

Not happy with my first purchase at ThredUp and very doubtful I will shop there again. I had an online coupon so it made the purchase very reasonable. But I will need to spend money, more than I would like to wear this coat. None of the "issues" was mentioned in the listing description. Unfortunately 4 of the buttons on the coat (it's a double-breasted J Crew wool coat) are broken in half (in other words 1/2 the buttons are "1/2" buttons.) So will need to replace all the buttons unless I can find this exact button (there are 8 buttons altogether). Since I'm not skilled with a needle & thread, I will need to first buy new buttons and second take the coat somewhere to have the old buttons removed and the new one's sewn on. (Cha-Ching!) Also the coat has a few random hairs and lint on it so will need to be professionally dry-cleaned (Cha-Ching, Cha-Ching!) Could have dealt with the dry cleaning if not for the issue with the buttons! Also, it took nearly 14 days to receive the item which just added to my annoyance with ThredUp! The item can be returned at my expense, but you only have 14 days from purchase to do that. Update: As you can see I received a canned reply from Thred-Up, a generic "I'm sorry." What I would like to know is why does Thred-Up require a buyer to pay for return shipping when it's not their fault? It will cost me approximately what I paid for the item to return it. Do not recommend.
Hi Joann,
We are so sorry to hear you are unhappy with your shopping experience. Our polka dot promise guarantees that any item purchased will arrive as described and we don't break promises! Please email support@thredup.com and we will have customer support resolve this right away!
Mixed buying experience. Clothes are definitely not laundered, merely shipped out as they came in. One item reeked of perfume. Another was flea ridden. I started getting bites just trying it on. And a spider came crawling out. Items were like new, so happy with that. I would like to stick to my local thrift stores, but they are going out of business in the Bay Area, in part because of lost business to ThredUp. Consignment prices are high. I saw many items for which the used pricing was higher than what you'd find the new on sale for.
Selling to thredup is a SCAM. They determine how much your bag is worth before selling the items and that is all the money you receive. I sent in items and over 20 were accepted. The majority of these items were brand new, never worn and with tags on them. Most items were originally bought for $80 and upwards. I only received 50 dollars for my entire bag. However, they have sold all the items for A SIGNIFICANT amount more and I received none of the profit. They made so much money off my clothes! Moreover, if you disagree with the amount that they are willing to give you for your bag there is absolutely nothing you can do. They make all the money! You make NONE. Trust me you are better off selling to a regular consignment shop even if it is more inconvenient. This company is such a SCAM. I never write reviews but I want people to cognizant of this before they use thredup! I was fooled by this company. The customer help is atrocious as well. I wish I could give the company negative stars.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
