This is a scam. They collect money and then use the same fishing profiles over and over that are not even real. I did not receive one call back from any of the profiles since they are old or never existed. Do NOT use this site.
This is one of the worst websites I ever visited.
If you want to search for a roommates say in Boston, MA this website does not have this city added in their listing rather I would have to search by North Quincy, MA to search for roommates in Boston. Not even Quincy city is available in their search.
This is not over, once you submit search for North Quincy, MA it will display so many search results with historical listing of people who found their room mates but it is very difficult to find open listing which you are interested.
The search results does not is separate listing of who want place and who had place to rent everything is mixed up. I had to spend lot of time to figure it out if there is a listing posted some one looking for tenant.:-(, I gave 1 star as I there was no option to give less than that.
Roommates.com allows you to create an account and post an ad. The account creation is free but to use the account in any way such as receiving responses to the ad, you have to pay $20. That is not told up front.
On top of that, there is no way to delete the account you create. This is a bait and switch site. What they are doing is clearly unethical.
Hello, We have tried to make it pretty easy to find information on how the site works. On our main website page under the More Info tab at the top, there is the Frequently Asked Questions page. I used a couple sites looking for a clean place to live (not 420 friendly), as well as it being safe and affordable. I am grateful that I found such a place on roommates.com. I just moved in, but there is peace with the person I moved in with- as well as good communication to start.
I went ahead and paid for a 3 day subscription of $5.99 so i can bypass the red tape and communicate fast to find a place to live. I sent out emails through roomates.com site and keep checking for a response. The other parties have not responded because they have not read my emails. Now looking in the reviews i can see why i did not get a response back from them. I am starting a new job and i have to live closer to work. I have no time to waste and yet no positive things to say about this site. I am sure i will get a response attached to my review that they will do damage control of explaining why this site did not work for me. Anyone that is serious to find a place to live in a very short time span please do not go looking on this site. Try somewhere else. My subscription expires today and still no responses back to me from my emails.
It's unfortunate that you haven't had any luck finding a roommate on the site. You do have the option to put your contact information in the free messages that you send to other users so that only one of you would need to upgrade. If you don't get any responses please contact us at support@roommates.com for a refund.

I feel fortunate to find the perfect roommate in 1 day. I think i was lucky and hope i have the same experience next time for my roommate has orders to leave but not sure when so i hope when i use this site again i have the same outcome. I had used craigslist and is dangerous.
I was very happy with roommates.com. It is easy to navigate the site. Information shown is very pertinent. You receive an email when there is a match according to the parameters that you set. A lot of people are using it so you have a lot of choices. I found the perfect roommate on it.
Roommates.com provided a great selection of potential roommates and an easy way to communicate with them. The matches were done in good taste and it helped to clear out those less compatible. The price for the membership is reasonable and worth it if you are serious about living with a responsible person. As I know that everyones preference is different, this was a great investment for me. Thanks Roommate.com. You were here for me when I needed you the most.
Most grateful,
GeneBean 2016
I get lots of responses to my advertisement, I respond immediately and never hear back from the interested party ever again. All i see is that roomates says the response violated their terms and they delete the response. So you never get a real response. This smells really fishy
I understand that a free service will not contain as many features and benefits as a paid service. But the Basic/free service on roommates.com is worth exactly what you're paying for it. People who email under the Basic service don't match your preferences, so what's the point? And you can't actually see the emails anyway, so what's the point?
This is an actual quote from a customer service rep in the Q&A on SiteJabber:
"You do not have to upgrade to receive responses from other other members, but you do have to upgrade to read their responses."
Hello,
I am sorry to hear about your dissatisfaction with Roommates.com with regard to the upgraded memberships.
When we started this service, we designed the site so that people are able to utilize the website without purchasing a membership and many of our users have successfully found roommates this way. The most common ways are to send contact information within emails to other users and post contact information within profile descriptions for other users to see. So while it is true that without having a paid membership you do not have the benefit of being able to read Roommates.com emails that you receive, you do still have the opportunity to achieve your goals while utilizing the free portions of the site.
If you want to give us another try we would be happy to give you some helpful tips on how to utilize the size, just contact us at support@roommates.com.

Got my new roommate through this site! It was so quick! Had many requests to choose from (and too many that I had to turn away). So, this is my 3rd Roommate
From this company. I've had no regrets for any of the 3. Believe roommates.com is
The best way to get good matches. Will stay with them in the future for sure!

Roommates.com is a worthless site. I went to it because I remember hearing about it a few years ago on TV. I didn't want to try craig's list because I though it was sketchy. I feel like an idiot for using this site. The price of enrollment is way to high and there are very few people on it. This is throwing your money away. They are also masters of the upsale, so prepared to be annoyed. I spent two month on the site and got only two responses, one being a nudist, the other one flaking. I gave up and tried craig's list and got 8 responses within hours. I found my roommate right away. I feel so strongly about it that I even wanted to make sure to write this so other people don't make that mistake.
Don't go there. There are a bunch of scammers. They use deception to real you in. Its not worth your money. Stay away from the add below if you go to rent. Avoid the following which goes by Annie in Tacoma, WA. It's not a legitamate listing and they just collect information about you. Then they give a questionaire before a meeting and never show up to meet with you. Avoid Annie at all costs in Tacoma, WA. She will advise you to speak with Sonja Hastings. Just look up Sonja Hastings on FB. Also the address below is 3110 N. 24th Street. They claim its a 7 bedroomroom house, but when you Google it, it only shows 3-6 bedrooms.

When my sloppy, passive/aggressive, almost non-verbal housemate texted me to say that he was moving out, I threw myself a little mental celebration. Then, I posted photos and a description to roommates.com, in hopes of finding a more suitable renter soon. After a few junk emails, I started receiving serious inquiries, and think that I've found a fella that seems to be a great fit. Well-done, roommates.com!
I used to pay $5.00 every email. It got me know where. It doesn't matter, male, female, Everybody I spoke to is hyper and drunk! Can't make up their mind if they want a roommate or a lover! One person told me, I can't bring meat in the house, but he has a friend accross the road whom would rent to me. So, I called. I was able to bring meat in the house, but not cook it. I thought then and there, I will not pay $5.00 to put myself through this again. So then, I started putting my number in to still get emails back! If I gave you the number, it takes nothing to write it down and call. Especially after giving the number to do so. A scam? I will never know and don't want to deal with this. I need a roommate not a head game! I don't understand adults playing this game. If you are not serious, what's the point? Go on twitter to play games!
The quantity and quality of this site did not match what they advertised. The people on the site (which is not many) always want to pay less than they listed and craigslist (which is free) has many more people who use their site. This can't be the "#1" site for roommates. Don't be fooled.
Hello,

I had no idea that I would find a house to share less than 5 miles from my job so quickly. I highly recommend this roommate search service to anyone looking to find a place to live or to share expenses. Wish I had thought to do this ages ago.
My complaint about this site is similar to Stef P.'s. When I pay money, I expect to receive ALL the information I need to decide who to contact and who not to contact. Roommates.com does not let paid members know the identity of other paid members. What that means is that they expect me to email many people who will not be able to read my emails without paying to unlock their inbox.
The company's goal is to have you pay them in order to give you the ability to waste your time trying to get other people to pay them with very little potential benefit to you.
I have used roommates.com in the past for a room I had available for rent and paid for the VIP membership. I was able to search in the age group that I was looking for and within a month of chatting with a few people was able to find my roommate. I recently went back to roommates.com now a few years later to find a new roommate and found that the site had changed a great deal. I paid the price for a month of VIP with no luck. Much of what I saw was people who wanted to hook up. Is this a dating site? I just wanted to rent my room. I was greatly disappointed this time around.

I was hesitant at first and out of all the potential possible roommates I was lucky I not only met nice people but genuine and up front about what they were looking for. I found a really nice roommate and I would use this site again if needed but for now I think I found the right person. Romy K
Answer: Yeah, if you are looking for crazy drunk high on drugs kind of people and it doesn't matter if you are male or female, after a couple of weeks, if that, they also get this crazy idea that they own you and can control your every thought move and somehow make themselves believe they are not renting a room, but using the web site to find a wife or husband type without the vows! This is not just based on one incident, but an average of 8 years of using the site on both sides. First I was renting rooms and the same applies and then I needed to rent a room which the same description applies. But understand, it is an web site for others to use. The users are the problem, not the site. It is amazing what I have experienced with all of what I said. I would think of another solution if I were you unless you want to learn as I did and I don't think it is a good idea. I would not write this if I did not know it all to well to be 1000% TRUE! I do not understand what these type of people are doing? Maybe they are a little to lonely or because you are renting a room or you need to rent a room that you do not have your own life and therefore they can take advantage of your sanity. I'm not sure, but I sure have had enough of these people for the past eight years that I have moved on to other roommate sites. Guess What? The same thing! Sorry, wish I could give a thumbs up, but No Can Do! Good luck

Hello,
It's unfortunate that you did not have a good experience on the site. I'm not sure why your search did not work at the time you tried to use it, but we did test it and Boston, MA came right up and you have the option to choose the Range (radius of how many miles from Boston), Members Who (Have a room or Need a room), Max Rent, and Move in date. We did not find any issues with the search option using your search criteria. Maybe there was a glitch?
We would love for you to give us another try if you would like.
