This website is a total scam! Complete garbage... I've sent out so many emails to most of the candidates and I have ZERO response! I don't believe the information this website provided is legitimate! I see the same names re-filtered back to me claiming to be new people looking for a room to rent! This website is FAKE!
To my big surprise I found matches immediately and had a settled deal within 2 days and yes I only paid for 3 :) well worth it. So much better than Craig's and BP the sense of security is high and the very first mail was instantly deleted and dumped before I even got it recognized as spam, impressive.
Was on this with a paid membership for 2 months and did not receive one valid response. Went to easyroommates.com and had 6 valid replies within 4 days. Found a perfect roommate on the 5th day! If you pay for a membership, you should be able to contact potential roommates without them having to pay to read your emails! Don't waste your time and money!

I understand that finding a roommate can be a difficult and frustrating process, especially if you are not receiving as many responses as you'd like. Roommates.com is a bulletin board service. As always, some areas may have more roommate potentials than others.
The Basic membership for Roommates.com is free, and as a basic member you can add a profile, browse your matches and send RoomMail messages, all for free. It is true that in order to read messages received from other members, you must become a Choice Member. Roommates.com membership options are $5.99 3 Days, $19.99 30 Days, $29.99 60 Days, and we do not automatically rebill our members.
When we started this service, we designed the site so that people are able to utilize the website without purchasing a membership and many of our users have successfully found roommates this way. The most common ways are to send contact information within emails to other users and post contact information within profile descriptions for other users to see. So while it is true that without having a paid membership you do not have the benefit of being able to read messages received, you do still have the opportunity to achieve your goals while utilizing the free portions of the site.

I sent messages to 33 people the website said were matches and received 2 responses and 1 from someone who was not even a match. The 1st message I ever received in my mailbox was spam which to look at I had to get a membership. I paid $19.99 and the message was fraudulent. I did not receive any messages for days so I emailed customer service asking why the response rate was so low and never got a response. This was the biggest waste of my time, money and efforts. I feel taken advantage of and I am extremely disappointed by this website, extremely.

If you paid for a membership and the message received was a scam message, you are entitled to a refund. I’m sorry that you did not receive more valid responses.
When you receive matches that do not match the criteria that you entered on your profile it is due to the open nature of our website. Members are not required to fill out specific criteria regarding themselves or their preferences. Members who choose not to fill out certain parts of their profile such as gender, will be matched with you as long as the portion they do fill out matches your listing. It will be left to the members themselves to make contact and ask any questions they feel are important in selecting a potential new roommate.
I’m not sure why you did not receive a response back from our Customer Service, but we would like a chance to correct the issue. Please contact our Customer Support through the website and we will be happy to assist you with a refund.

Using it for free is a waste of time and paying for an upgrade is a huge waste of time and money. I never received a single request for an appointment or any replies to the many emails I sent to possible renters on roomates.com. NOT ONE. It was a beautiful suite of rooms in a highly desirable neighborhood in the San Francisco Bay Area at a reasonable monthly rent. Craigs List and Roomster generated interest, responses and several good prospects within a couple of days. I believe roomates.com is fictional, and I'm concerned I've given personal information to scam artists.
I contacted several of the inquiries for a roommate on your site, however the second respondent turned out to be the charm, I am very pleased to have found a responsible. "clean" (background checks) roommate. Thank you,

Posted a room for rent. Got a message from a potential tenant within 5 minutes. Couldn't read the message within signing up for VIP access. Once I signed up for " 3 day trial", I was granted access to read the message. " Potential tenant" said they were interested in more pictures... but since they were not a paid member, they would not be able to read my reply, so I should reply to their Gmail address. They also provided a phone number for texting. I responded to their Gmail address and they replied back saying they were currently out of town but would like more pictures so they would be able to see if they like the place and could then send a cashier's check, blah blah blah. I get the exact same scam all the time on craigslist, but thought a paid subscription site would mean some scammer filters. Seriously? Glad I didn't buy a month or a year. Boo.

After searching and contacting different potential roommates for a couple of weeks, I found a very nice person who was renting out a beautiful house. We met and talked, and I checked out the premises and honestly couldn't ask for a nicer place to live. I highly recommend the website and I would not hesitate to use it again in the future if the need arises. Thank you.
Constant roommate match ups from the website and also direct emails from potential roommates kept me awash in options and I went to see many rooms. Also, the tiny paywall gave me piece or mind the other participants were serious. Took three weeks from the day I activated the roommates.com account to the day I gave a deposit. Just moved in.
Terrific easy-to-use service. Found an excellent roommate situation in 2 days. Much easier than wading through the Craigslist listings -- especially because the landlords indicate the characteristics they are looking for in a renter. That way you don't waste time responding to listings you will not get. You also get a better idea of the room situation (house, apt, condo, etc.) and the current occupants (number, ages and demographics).
Roommates.com is better too because you can select specific communities you are interested in -- not just a large area that is within X miles of a zip-code.
If in the future I need to find a place to stay or rent one out, I will certainly us your site (and your site only) again. Overall, the experience was excellent. Thanks so much for providing this service.

I paid for a 2 mo. Membership. I sent out like 15 messages. No replies. I asked if they have any othet actual paying members, no reply. I asked if perhaps they could tell paying members if the "member" can actually read the message, so it doesn't waste my time writing into cyber space, No reply. The final insult, they just sent me an email stating that my account was being deactivated due to inactivity. I have 39 lousy days left per my CC receipt, and I was on their waste of a site yesterday! WIsh I had checked the ratings first. I think I will check with the Att. Generals office about them, they usually are quite helpful

I found a very thoughtful and grateful roommate. I looked through Craigslist but saw so many shady people with checkered paste, pets, kids, live in girlfriends and very little money to pay rent
My guy was former AF like me and paid me a whole months rent since I waived the deposit. Roomates seek you out unlike on risky Craig's list.
It was well worth my subscription. Great conclusion and easy process.
I had multiple responses to my add within hours. The next day I interviewed a few people from the website and decided to go with the very first one. I would use roommates.com again, but I hope I don't have to lol
Simple and easy form registration. Given many referrals to start with that I could choose my own roomate. I have 6 month leases and I will absolutely sign up again next time.

We do not automatically rebill our members. Our site does not have a subscription membership option. Once your paid upgrade expires, your account automatically reverts back to the basic (free) status. Is it possible you have us confused with another site?
Please be assured that we take very seriously scammers and improper use of our site. In order to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for our users our staff perform daily scam searches on the site looking for and banning any scam accounts we find. Additionally, we have implemented several new security features we believe will reduce the amount of scamming activity on the site as well as some new features that assist us in locating potential scam accounts quickly.
Unfortunately, many times scammers don't make themselves known until they get you to email them through their private email address, which Roommates is not privy to. Every profile also has a Report Member button in the upper right hand corner that can be used to send the account information of a suspected scammer to our Fraud Department for review.

I have been on this site for a while but never upgraded. Once I upgraded the possibilities became endless! This site is more economical than other sites like roomster.com. If you have to contact this site, they respond timely even if all you're doing is deactivating your account. And it's not some automated system generated response either. I had the pleasure of receiving an email from Jessica and I think the fact rhat the email was personalized made me feel even better about the site. Yes I found a roommate! Too bad 10 stars is not an option!
Bogus. Got the same 3 matches over and over again. Tried to contact and that is not possible. Site used to be good not anymore. Calling State Atty. Office about this. Asking for my pic is VERY interesting and the why makes no sense.

It's unfortunate that you haven't had any luck with your matches. You have the option to adjust your preferences any time to try and get more matches. Some areas have more interest than others. Most members won't respond unless they can see photos of the person they will be rooming with or at least photos of the room they will be renting.
