Spent the last couple months trying to adopt a dog. I've been a pet owner my entire life. I've filled out at least 20 applications to several different shelters and rescues through this website. Out of all these places I've had one rescue check 2 of my references and no one every called my Vet's office. Many of these animals are still on the website. Shame on this website and the shelters and the rescues! If these animals are real they are not being placed in good homes! Why? Thinking about dealing with a breeder. What a disgrace!

You have to be a part of a large pet organization. If you are an individual that fosters you won't be allowed to use petfinder. So basically the pets that could be listed on this site probably end up in bad situations more often than not because this site isn't really much of a resource at all. Especially when the larger orgs generally don't want to help smaller foster folks at all. What a harmful site this website is.

Most consumers will check the BBB or online reviews when they are purchasing something of value. I just recently purchased a dog from Sunset Acres Kennels in Butler, MO. I was so impressed with the owner, Elaine Craig. Her professionalism, knowledge, and her attention to detail is what makes her kennel stand out from the rest. My pet came home with a completed full color book filled with care instructions, medical records, building inspections, family tree history, photos and so much more. I was contacted immediately the next day to make sure the transition was a positive one for my pet. My pet has adapted beautifully in my home, not only with his socialization skills with my other animals but also with his acceptance of his kennel. He plays well with his toys and goes in his kennel when we leave. He is almost completely potty trained and he is only 12 weeks old.

Denied after approved
December 26, 2015

I'm so sorry to have to get to this point, to have to write such a bad review after the deplorable circumstances.
My husband and I were approved to adopt a very sweet looking puppy. When we were squaring things away for the delivery, to our surprise we were hit with an email by this woman, who has the power to denied adoption, playing with our feelings and for the best interest of the puppy to have a loving, caring family.
She accommodated, constantly, to her needs, and sympathized with the lady who supposed to deliver the puppy. Never show interest in working with us.
I tried repeatedly to get in touch with someone. I do understand this is Christmas time, but will like a call from corporate, or someone.
I have all the mails to prove how sour and heartless this woman from Kentucky is. She abuse of her powers, judging us, and insinuating we were not telling the truth.
She obviously has a total lack of communication skills.

Horrible Communication
September 9, 2021

One of the most frustrating experiences ever. I was interested in a couple of dogs, but each email I sent, inquiring about the dogs, was met with a short, unhelpful reply after several days of waiting. The lady I was communicating with somehow got fixated on the idea that I was going to stick the dog in the basement and never let them out. Despite me attempting many times to clear up the confusion, she buckled down and got more aggressive about not letting us adopt a dog. It felt like I was talking to a brick wall that had decided I wasn't what they considered to be the ideal pet owner.

I have owned dogs and cats my whole life. I was just screamed at over the phone by one of the representatives of this agency. Her phone number is *******399. She fought with me over text message about my not giving my dog heartworm medicine, when he had an allergic reaction previously. After numerous uneducated jabs over text
Messaging she then accused me over the phone of buying drugs and alcohol instead of heartworm medicine! This is crazy! Do NOT rely on them for getting your dog adopted.

Ridiculous expectation
December 30, 2015

I want to adopt two kitten/cats, found a perfect pair through Petfinder. One of the directors from the charities conducted a phone interview with me, asking all sort of questions to assure that I would be a good cats adopter. She told me that I would be a good cat Mom and asked me to fill out an application form. One day after, she called me back and told me that her manager denied my application because I did not answer the question the way they wanted. (Are you kidding!) She then told me that she has no power to make decision. What a joke.

I had the worst experience you could ever want to experience from this company. I wanted to adopt a pet for my child. I found one and "Lisa Collins scheduled an appointment, then changed it without even letting me know. Then asked me to pick another time, which I did. She then rescheduled saying she was not In town. Then after that she stated that someone else was picking up the pet that we already were waiting to get. She was very unprofessional and unconcerned. She acting as if she didn't care one bit about me and my family. Very unacceptable, she should not be employed or working for this business at all. Again her name is Lisa Collins. We were left without a puppy for our child for our family for the Holidays.

I applied for a puppy and my application got denied because A.) I lack experience with dogs. B.) Because of distance. I can come to terms with A. But for B it seems to me you want more people to apply and Pay the application fee. KNOWING they will be denied for distance.

Answered an ad and foolishly sent a $200 deposit. Drove 300 miles to pick up the puppy only to find the address belonged to someone else. The woman in the ad texted and wanted another $250 for vet bills but she would not meet in person. Filed a fraud charge with the local PD. Beware of Petfinders and associated scams.

Read the contract before you even considering Petfinder.
Reads like a bad Auto lease to me.
Amongst many other things, if you become sick or disabled you are not allowed to give your pet to a friend or family member. They want it back!
They also want to dictate how you care for it & pet insurance is a must, even if you can afford anything that your pet needs. This is not ownership, this is a rental agreement that would be illegal if an automobile.
In my opinion it is a SCAM! Big money for a rental dog.
Pay a bit more and buy a dog without a dictatorship type contract.
Or, allow them to insect your home, make random vist and demand a large sum of money. And don't forget to bend over at your own front door!
In my opinion, just another FOR PROFIT, agency making money off those who really love animals.

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME!
November 11, 2017

Twice have I applied for a dog. The first time I went through the application process & waited a week before they told me another family was chosen. He was removed from petfinder so I believed it. So I kept browsing on petfinder for more dogs & week later that same dog was available again, so I applied again & never got a response. After that I applied for another dog, got an email with the application, here we are a week later & I still have heard nothing from the first or the second dog. If I wasnt chosen the least they could do is give me a heads up!

First, I have filled out an application so many times I can't count. Applications just keep getting dumped. People don't respond to inquiries. I haven't gotten one response. This is a time consuming effort and very much a waste of time when you get nothing back from prospective pups you are interested. I don't think the lists are updated much at all. All this certainly a waste of time and effort.

Terrible
August 13, 2020

The person that answered the phone was rude and was not willing guide me at all, I Have wanted to adopt a dog for a while and now that I am finally able to do so, I called and was told " we don't do first time adopters" I really feel bad for these beautiful dogs that need a home and people like this stops that from happening! I sure hope these babies are not in their property!

We adopted a dog through Petfinder who was fostered by a company called R & T Loving Paws. Apparently Petfinder uses very low-quality foster parents like R &T Loving Paws from Maryland who gouge adoptive parents for money with no explanation as to what the fee covers. They also could care less about the dogs; they are in the business of fostering dogs for money. The dogs often have worms and other behavioral issues and the foster parents take no responsibility for these even though they claim they are turning over a very healthy or trained pet. Even if you do a trial period with a dog and decide it won't work for you, some of the foster parents of these Petfinder dogs will even guilt you into taking the dogs with manipulative emotions. Keep in mind, When you find your dog through Petfinder They have no responsibility for the adoption stage once you find your pet.

Best cat ever
April 30, 2023

I adopted a young cat approximately seven months old from Petfinder in December of 2022 the process was easy. They did ask several questions to make sure the pet was going to a good home. I couldn't be happier! This is the sweetest,, most affectionate (sometimes mischievous) cat I have ever owned in my life. And I have had cats most of my 63 years of life. Thank you Petfinder, for pairing me with the perfect pet!

I've applied several times to adopt a dog - not one single reply or comment. Seems the dogs' listings were pulled down almost as quickly as they ever appeared. Were they actually real dogs? Not one single agency or shelter ever responded to my inquiries/emails/phone calls. It's no wonder people go to breeders.

Open listing of pets
March 27, 2023

Anyone can post an animal. No vetting is done to make sure there are no puppy mill ads. Don't trust! Rehoming fees are ridiculous, people are selling these "rescues" for profit. Ask questions, lots of questions. Ask to see vet bills for this animal, breeding info., everything because this site does not verify.

I am a 501 c 3. I cannot get anybody to answer me and set up my account. Furthermore, it seems like I also cannot get any information about what their policies or procedures are for setting up 501 c 3. This is my third time applying still in the pending phase, and i'm not sure why. If I had to say anything about this company. This company and their customer service really sucks. There is terrible communication between the customers the clients and the pet owners. Also there were a few customers that contacted us that had clearly fake names. I'm sure when this was put together it was intended for something great. But clearly that has not been what it has been for me. It has been a horrible experience and I really wish there was another company I could go to replace them. We happen in nonprofit For over five years. In this place out of everybody idea with is the worst. Not to mention the fact that they do not check out any of the people who are looking for pets the way they check out the people who are not profits. They should at least at the bare minimum. Make sure these accounts that are being set up Are real people with real names not fake names..

Unprofessional
October 30, 2018

Quite a few times over the past years I have inquired about quite a few cat's... They say that the cats were in foster homes but no one ever gets back to me... But then Petfinder keeps getting back to me asking if I'm adopted that cat... Unbelievable. That's why I go to shelters
