I have be searching for a dog for about 3 months. Petfinder has thousands of listings and it takes great deal of time to search through. Many times searches are dropped midway, which is very frustrating. The absolute worst thing about this site, is that once you click on contact this organization, NO ONE ever gets back to you. I filled out nearly 20 application for different shelters and rescues, and have not been contacted saying that my application has been approved. Not sure this is a fault of petfinder, but it would seem much easier to have one application approved by petfinder that person could fill out. It would also seem better to make sure that shelters make contact when an application has been received. Terrible experience. With so many homeless pets, one would think better efforts would be made to get these animals adopted.

I had an experience with a place that claimed to be a rescue. It turned out that they were neglecting their pets and allowing people to adopt without paperwork or any questions. I made pet finder aware and they did nothing. They allowed the organization which is 4 The Love of Dogs to continue posting and by doing so endangering animals and allowing neglect and abuse.

Their policy states not to fill out your application unless you can meet the next Saturday. No one responds. Dogs that are listed are not up for adoption. It takes forever to get a response, just to find out the dog is not available. 2 weeks later, the same pup Is still listed. How are these animals ever supposed to find a home with such poor management skills. How hard is it to respond and in a timely manner.

Horrible experience
October 18, 2020

This site pretends to be about adopting out dogs but the so called rescue groups make their own rules. They never return emails and funny enough there are never phone numbers to call. They charge exorbitant amounts of money for so called rescue dogs. Save your money and go out and buy a pup from a reputable breeder. I complained to the Pet Finder site as well and they are of no help. They turned a positive experience into a bad one. Shame on you and the rescue groups that are affiliated with you. I'm sure the highest bidder gets the dog.

I'm sure this site means well, but from our experience it was nearly impossible to find a puppy using this service - for all the same reasons everyone else is mentioning. After trying this service for a month with nothing but failures and disappointment, we went to Craigslist and found one in 10 minutes and picked it up within the hour.

Literally every dog application is like:
Do you have a fortified 10 acre property where the dog can roam freely but never have any chance of escape?
Are you white?
Are you between the ages of 35-40?
Will you stay home 24 hours and only give attention to this dog and no other humans or dogs or work or anything else?
Can you commit to training this dog to win the purina dog show gold medal and agree to life in prison if you don't win that medal next year?
This dog is EXTREMELY high energy. Will you take it on 46 walks a day at precisely 8 minute increments?
If you answer no to any of these questions then you're a terrible human and don't deserve to even look at dogs.

I've tried for over two years with PetFinder to get connected with ANY shelter or rescue organization able to find an Australian Cattle Dog. Eight years ago Louie was found in Florida and he's a happy dog. However, he wants a buddy.
PetFinder provides dozens of pictures and descriptions of AUS Cattle Dogs. Only one organization ever responded.
Unfortunately, it seems that most rescue organizations utilize the marketing services of PetFinder as a tool to find a new home. It just isn't working.
We're greatly disappointed in the way this organization operates.

Very happy with my new dog.
September 21, 2017

PetFinder was the instrument that matched me to my dream dog. My puppy came from Serendipity Kennels. Julie was very efficient. All details (health check, shots) were taken care of as was all proper paperwork. She went the extra mile, literally, to bridge the distance and help me get my new puppy in a safe and cost conscious way. I'm very pleased.

I know there are lots of dogs that need good homes. You hear about all it the time. I have contacted pet finders web site several times to adopt a dog. They don't want u too adopt these dogs. They act like no one is good enough. So keep ur dogs. I will find a dog that really needs a good loving home. But It will not be thru pet finders, because I will not contact them again.

Does anyone have a phone number and/or an email address for someone at Petfinder who can help us secure an account? Our shelter has been trying for more than 18 months to sign up and all we have for our efforts is a long email thread (to a general "info@" address) asking for more documents (501(c)3 registration, etc.). We don't know what the problem is with our registration and now they've stopped responding to our emails. Very frustrating to say the least

I am leaving a one star review. The people running this have no idea what they are doing. We gave them all our information and they decided we can't adopt through them. What a horrible organization. Where did they even get the information from saying we only came in once to get a rabies shot. Are you kidding me. We took good care of our dogs. How else did we renew the licences for them. Sweetie, one of the first dogs we had lived to be ten. We always kept up to date one their shots when necessary.

Petfinder is an average website. Highly frustrating that it cannot seem to handle the internet traffic load and resetting your connection and losing your preferences time and time again. Would be valuable to be able to include "not" words, as Collie -border which would speed searching. Very frustrating and odd not being able to search for a common breed, a Rough Coated Collie as it isn't on their list of dogs.

So we've been trying to adopt for a few months now however, by the time we find the dog on Petfinder, contact the right shelter, fill out their application and they do the reference checks and home visit the dog we wanted is adopted by someone else. This has happened three times, with three different shelters, each time with us filling out the paperwork and hoping that all the hurtles are cleared before someone else adopts the dog we're interested in. I think that by the time we finally find our pup, we will be "approved" by a 1/2 dozen or more shelters. I would think that this is a waste of resources for the shelters and that perhaps if Petfinder had a common application and they performed the reference checks (and home visit if necessary) that the adoptions would be faster and the mostly volunteer forces at the shelters can be freed up for other services. Just a thought as we anxiously await our fourth adoption inquiry.

Be very careful when you adopt a dog! The dog we adopted did not work out and the rescue group refused to take him back as was stipulated in their contract. There was never any follow through after we adopted him. They are quick to place dogs and that's where the buck stops.

How can you adopt a dog when the shelter is in Vermont (close to my home) and the dog is still in Texas?
Found out when I requested a visit.
To add insult to injury I was told that there would be 2-3 applications
considered. Guess what? Don't you think that an application from a neighboring state to Texas would have more chance than me? I would think so. Just in terms of saving the transport cost to New England. No thanks, I'll adopt from my local shelter.

The website is simple to use, however it takes a very long time for anyone to get connected with you. I have been trying for a while now to adopt a cat and every single cat I've tried to adopt so far has been adopted before I even get the chance because nobody gets back to me in time. There's really no point in trying to adopt online, especially with this website. You're better off physically going to an adoption place.

Pet adoption
July 15, 2023

After filling out the applications, submitted so many inquiries on pets and sent so many emails, I still receive no response. I have found matches on the website, send inquiries to try to adopt the dog(s) and never hear back from ANYONE! Petfinder is nothing but Scam. It's just a waste of time thinking anyone will reply to your inquiries. It is extremely frustrating. It's probably best to just go to a local shelter.

My family spent days, if not weeks searching for a dog that would suit our family. We spent time placing inquiries, providing info on our family and asking questions on the posted animals. Crickets, not one response. Finally, we realized we had to place applications to even get these people to speak to us. Once we did get a response (1 out of 7) the organization came up with every reason to not even let us meet the animals. It's a site for rescues seeking donations. I've researched many of the rescues in my area listed on this site. Sadly, most have lost sight of the goal here-placing rescues in loving forever homes. Placing unrealistic barriers, high costs, and excuses of why you are not the one has exasperated the homeless animal crisis in our country. If rescues are holding these animals for extended periods of time or find excuses for you not to meet, move on. This is what you find on Petfinder.

I submitted an application to be approved as a registered nonprofit to submit pets for adoption. I completed the application, took the required form to the veterinarian who services the rescues and submitted all. THREE TIMES. No response. The kittens were 8 weeks old, rescues, now still submitting followup with NO RESPONSE, they are 4 mos old now. I searched other options, don't seem to be any. Good opportunity for someone NEW to be an option. Followed up, check junk/spam followed up, checked junk spam. Contacted with many inquiries. Still no reply.

The rescue they connected me with was only responsive once. Picture yourself looking for a pet to replace a lost one and only to fall in love with a certain animal and then be left drifting by a rescue service that will not answer your e-mails and posts no phone numbers but says they want $450 for their animal. Poor dog... poor pet lover... poor service... do not use this sight
