I've been a customer for about two weeks. The customer service is wonderful, but I'm changing back to AAA. I seldom drive and haven't driven since driving around the block to make a connection. I got an email today saying that they haven't received a signal from me and to plug and unplug the device to make sure it was working. This entails getting upside-down and lots of swearing. They will be charging me for 30 miles a day if I don't reactivate my device. It is way too much trouble to be worried about driving my car to keep my Metromile device happy.
We used Metromile on a trial basis. However, as the saying goes, if something seems to be too good to be true, it probably is not.
Metromile added policies we did not request, and we failed to review them properly. Our failure to review did not excuse Metromile's improper business practices. Furthermore, in order to make our final decision, we had asked in an email for the declaration page to be delivered by mail which never happened.
Metromile's response to our inquiry: "As there was no additional contact as referenced in the call, we assumed the coverage was correct. I apologize for this inconvenience." They failed to deliver the document we had requested and then they made an assumption instead of checking back. What they considered a mere "inconvenience" cost us money since they refused to cancel and refund the unnecessary additional coverage options. The changing of ownership- acquired by Lemonade Inc.- won't fool us.
I have been a customer for 4 years without incident so i had no idea how they would respond to a claim. I have a minor fender bender - bumped a truck in a parking lot --. They paid the claimant $750 for what i considered to be no damage but it was quick. Now when i'm up for renewal they have chosen not to renew my policy under some trumped up reason that I didn't send in information they requested on my car -- they wanted all info again. Photos of all angles of auto, registration, proof of address, odometer and how did i use my car. I didn't see the email they sent; they sent no follow up email stating they didn't receive it and have cancelled the policy even though i sent in everything they requested. To me they're great (cheap) until there is a claim and then you're out.
WARNING: DO NOT BUY CAR INSURANCE FROM METROMILE:
My friend who lost his voice box due to cancer was the victim of a hit-and-run while his car was parked at his doctor's office. Police found the driver thanks to witnesses but as soon as he filed a claim, and after giving his insurance company the violator's info, Metromile canceled his policy. Metromile Insurance is located in San Francisco, CA. Who would have guessed?
They ACTUALLY tried to tell him that he voluntarily canceled his own policy after he made a claim, even after cashing his policy payment for that quarter.
It took me only three weeks to discover that they could not provide the proof of insurance to DMV. Therefore, I was essentially not covered for those three weeks. Customer service was polite but totally inept. Underwriters appear to have distorted perceptions of auto insurance policies. To make things worse, I am out hundreds of dollars in deposits and fees for non-insurance for the miserable three weeks with them. I can't understand how this company avoids problems with the insurance commission. I hope to report. DO NOT fall for their pie in the sky! Put them out of business!
I drive very little, so MetroMile was initially great. But, when it came time for my six-month renewal, my rate increased dramaticallly, though no specifics (miles driven, credit rating, etc.) changed. When I asked Metromile to explain this increase, they would not give me a concrete answer. And, I asked more than once. So, I am left to assume they raised my rates just because they could. Be warned. I am not the only person who has experienced this ploy.
I have been with Metromile since May 2017. Now, I have not had any accident while insured thru them but I was super satisfied by the rate per month. I used to pay $160+ a month but now I pay about $70! It truly is an ideal insurance for people like me who don't drive often. Only reason I gave a 4 stars is because their communication for roadside assistance need work. I waited 1.5 hrs just to have a the primary tow truck never calling us to locate us and secondary tow truck come get my car in 15 mins.
Price: This really can't be beat if you're a low mileage commuter, and if the price savings gets even better with multiple cars under 1 policy.
Tech: Being able to get car diagnostics, location, etc. on your phone is all very helpful and useful.
Overall: I've been a customer for almost a year now, and I haven't had any issues. I will say that I'm a little abnormal of a customer as I have not had any accidents or events that required their customer service yet, but I would imagine they would do a decent job here. If you're a clean, low mileage driver with not a lot of abnormalities this is a great policy!
I don't drive much anymore as I am retired and can't drive at night anymore. My car is 3 years old and only has 7,000 miles on it. Uber has made getting around easier, but I still like having my own car.
It's getting expensive though, especially since Geico was charging me $3,000 per year! I heard that Metromile offers insurance for low mileage drivers and called them for a quote. It's true! The sales person on the phone was very kind and patient, and my new policy is only $1,300 per year. I am saving $1,700 per year! Definitely worth checking out if you don't drive that much.
I strongly caution against avoiding Metromile. You will find a large number of complaints if you have a look at Metromile on the Better Business Bureau website. I tried to communicate twice with them about the issues brought up in these complaints and they simply didn't bother to respond.
Do not be fooled by their low rates. I totaled my car almost 3 months ago. You barely ever hear from the adjusters. You have to constantly call/send emails to get a response. They intentionally prolong the process, giving vague reasons and you the runaround. They claim they have issued me 2 checks, one being a payout to get a new car. I have received NOTHING. 3 months later, I still have no car and you can get no answers or action done with them. Go through a legitimate insurance company and don't waste your time. They are seriously a joke.
I like the plan and concept of pay as you go, the only complaint so far I have is and this is a serious concern that their pulse device drains out car battery. This happened to me twice in three days on my brand new 2022 car. Was unable to start my car as the battery got fully discharged and had to jump start couple of times before getting it replaced from dealer.
I am a new customer with Metro Mile. I was dissatisfied with AARP hart ford for several reasons, not related to claims. So I contacted Metro Mile. Fast easy and I am saving more than half of what paid with AARP Harford. I also like the fact that they area new company, with the backing of some larger companies. It is refreshing to see something new, that really saves you money. No pressure sales. Several fiends have switched to MM since they saw my savings.
Please stay away from this dishonest company. After a year with no claims no issues Metromile suddenly doubled my insurance for the coming year. I called to cancel my policy and was told that my cancellation was recorded but there was no confirmation # for that. I was also told they were sending a new transponder but that I should just send it back as my policy was ending in a couple of weeks. Then I get an email from them announcing that I will be summarily charged 150 miles every day for not installing the new transponder that they told me to send back! I typically only drive 3-4 days a week and 10-20 miles a day. This is blatantly cheating the consumer, this company deserves to fail as quickly as possible and be sued into oblivion.
Horrible insurance company if you plan to talk to a live person do not get this insurance I repeat do not get this insurance you are not able to talk to the underwriters whatsoever at all. If you have any questions any issues there's no one to get in contact with.
After being with them for several years they asked me for all my information pictures registration insurance my address my ID as if it was a new insurance very inconvenient very unnecessary so I decided to send them anyhow they responded with an email indicating they received everything and they would let me know if anything further was needed nothing heard back from them and get a notice later 3 weeks that go by and they decide to cancel me. Poor poor customer service never have I experienced this with a company I beg you do not use this company it's not much cheaper than any other insurance because it goes by Miles and mileage as it's expensive plus your regular monthly fee on top of that they suck!
Worst customer service I've ever encountered with a company. Beware if you have to file a claim with them, you'll be lucky to get it handled and it will take months. They don't answer phones or emails. After you file claims they make up a reason that they are going to cancel your policy.
I tried Metro mile for 4 years. I disclosed everything. I was leasing and every 6 months they would raise the rates with excuses that rates and taxes went up in my area. When I leased my new Vehicle they tried to say it was because of my DUI which I told them about when I first applied and is 9 years now and soon to fall off, most insurances lower with continued services and no accidents, not raise. I even did quotes under other emails and got way lower prices sent back. They are a joke. I am fed up and switching!
Also, don't even bother to try to contact Customer service for policy changes, updates, billing questions, etc. On Weekends, they don't exist. Very frustrating when sometimes the only time you have is a weekend off to Handel your personal business.
I had read the reviews so when they raised my rates after a few months, I expected it.
I did not expect them to charge me for miles in an exclusion area - on my last trip to Mexico. Even though their coverage is invalid, they billed me for those trips. Charging someone for a product or service you are not providing is fraud and I reported them to the BBB.
Unfortunately they refuse to do the right thing and responded saying "we are operating within the confines of your policy contract."
Seriously, stay away from this company
After moving to the city I was considering selling my car as it was just too damn expensive to have. I usually bike to work & just drive on weekends or roadtrips. I saw Metromile's ad on Bart and haven't looked back. I went from paying $130/month to now about ~$60! That's $800+ a year in savings! Can't beat that. I'm keeping my car because of Metromile.
I live in SF and take public transportation everywhere, only using my car to go on semi local weekend trips (larger trips I'll take a flight) - saving ~$50/month on auto insurance in an expensive city is incredible and it's very convenient to have the app (i have to move mine every week and a half for street sweeping so verrrryyy helpful). I have a 4 door sedan from 2015 Highly recommended for young professionals trying to save $ like me!
Answer: If you pretty much never (and I mean almost never) drive your car, it's worth. If you actually need your car more than once/wk, don't bother.
Answer: No, they link it to a credit card.
Answer: Certainly seems that way!
Answer: Metromile is for low mileage customers; check the department of insurance for a list of carriers and average premiums based on demographics.
Answer: You make those decisions when you shop around; other people's insurance would not apply to you.
MetroMile has a rating of 1.3 stars from 109 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with MetroMile most frequently mention customer service, insurance company and base rate. MetroMile ranks 115th among Car Insurance sites.
