After moving to the city I was considering selling my car as it was just too damn expensive to have. I usually bike to work & just drive on weekends or roadtrips. I saw Metromile's ad on Bart and haven't looked back. I went from paying $130/month to now about ~$60! That's $800+ a year in savings! Can't beat that. I'm keeping my car because of Metromile.

I live in SF and take public transportation everywhere, only using my car to go on semi local weekend trips (larger trips I'll take a flight) - saving ~$50/month on auto insurance in an expensive city is incredible and it's very convenient to have the app (i have to move mine every week and a half for street sweeping so verrrryyy helpful). I have a 4 door sedan from 2015 Highly recommended for young professionals trying to save $ like me!

Poor customer service
February 23, 2022

If you are considering Metromile because you are WFH and don't drive as much anymore, look elsewhere. Their customer service is terrible, and I cannot imagine dealing with them if I ever need them for anything more than to push paper. Also, the rate increases shortly after you sign up are bait-and-switch. Do yourself a favor and avoid this company.

I'm reviewing Metromile as a third party claimant and my experience.
Time is of the essence they say well not here. My claim was finalized two months later, yes it took two months. It took them over a week to get my vehicle out from the tow truck company's yard, it incurred thousands of dollars in storage fees, not my problem, it was their insurer that totaled my car.
It seems like their adjusters are trained to be extra slow. On top of it all, I was charged for my car rental and had to deal with another nightmare trying to get my money back from them. If you're ever in an accident that isn't your fault and the other party has Metromile, I would highly advise to go through your own and have your insurance deal with them.

Horrible
January 16, 2020

Metromile is fine until you need them, then they throw you under the bus. Horrible customer service. It's the insurance business. They take your money and don't want to pay it, but they are the worst.

I switched to Metromile because i dont drive very much. I thought i was making the right decision, but very dissapointed with them. I had a fender bender and when i tried to contact my claims adjuster she never called me back. We are going on 2 weeks now on resolving the issue with repair. Please dont switch to Metromile,... its not worth the little money you save.

So the ad promised a base rate of 24/mo + 3 cents a mile, then when I entered my license details (I have an impeccable record) it switches to 36/mo + 5c a mile. So they thought they could rip people off too, just like other ins companies do so easily

Everything is fine until you have an accident and need them. Consumers be aware!
I have been using Metromile for the past two years and really did not have any problems and used their app very often to check on my monthly payments. Then, I had an accident and realized that paying cheaper came with a price. Horrible costumer service, delay emails or zero call backs. You have to complaint to the public in order for them to pay attention to you to actually do something about your case. They probably play stupid so that they do not compensate you or they are probably short on cash flow to help you out. Do not use their services because you will regret it the day you need them!

Metromile did very little to help me in my time of need. I guess all they want is to collect your money without putting in the care or work when it comes down to it. When a negligent driver crashed into my car, leaving it totaled, Metromile tried to pawn off the case to Uber eats insurance company for them to take care of. Not only did they completely seem to disregard my situation, there was no sympathy or empathy for me. To make things even more harsh, not only did they NOT help, they kicked me and my whole family off their insurance! In the end, it was a good riddance to not have to deal with metromile anymore but I am so regretful that I ever gave them a chance and ever gave them my money. Stay away from these guys!

Don't be fooled
April 23, 2021

In my opinion Metromile IS a scam. They only write insurance in a limited number of states. If you ask for a quote on their website in a state they don't write in, they don't tell you but instead take all your information and flip it to other companies that they act as an agent for. I stopped entering my information when I realized I was flipped to a Progressive Insurance website. Even though I closed the page without completing it, I had already entered my email and phone number and then was pestered by Liberty Mutual, Progressive and others.

I signed up and got a letter a week later stating I have an invalid driver's licence (which it is not). As a result, they automatically canceled the new policy.

Fine by me, as I decided to stay with my current insurer. Saving a few $ is not worth the potential hassle of dealing with a dysfunctional company!

Stay away at all cost!
February 19, 2020

I was a loyal Metromile customer from very early on. Then out of the blue, I received a notification that my policy was not going to be renewed because I a bad driving record. I have been driving for 25 years and never had an accident. I contested the decision, was told that I would get a response within 48 hours and never heard back from them.

I switched to Farmers, got a discount because I have a home insurance with them, and I am now paying less than I was with Metromile.

Incompetent customer service and management. They don't provide many of the basic services outside of California yet, when you purchase coverage, they take your money and don't tell you any of that!. When something happens, they say we don't do this and that in those other states … interesting company … can't believe they are in business!

They do nothing
October 4, 2022

Metromile won't help you with any claim. You will have to do your own work, make your own phone calls. If you get hit, they try to call the other drivers' insurance once, then tell you they won't help anymore and you are on your own. Because then Metromile has your car fixed and puts a hefty deductable into thir own pocket.

Do not get Metromile
March 13, 2022

I have been in a losing battle with this company for two months. I moved from Arizona to New Mexico two months ago, Metromile is not authorized to operate in NM. I tried to cancel and Metromile required documents relating to to my new insurance, which I sent them, they said I did not have enough insurance! And continued tto charge outrageous amounts because they were not receiving a signal from my device, which was returned. I had to block my bank account to prevent them from withdrawing money. Now I am being harassed to pay $1198. Stay away from this company.

Unbelievable! I went through EverQuote and received a quote through MetroMile. It was over double what I'm paying a high level of insurance with low deductibles from a premium carrier. I saw their quote and wondered how many elderly people were being scammed. This is outrageous.

Stay away
September 13, 2019

I was a Metromile customer for two years and I was finally so fed up I canceled and went with a different company. It sounds good but there are far too many problems with this company. The customer service leaves much to be desired, the are only available to talk with you M-F 8-5 (while most people work) you have to stay on hold for long periods of time to talk to someone and overall there is not much money savings. I paid an average of $110 per month for basic liability on cars that were rarely driven. Two of my cars were only driven once in a while. On those cars especially the devices rarely work as they should, they often send out emails saying they have lost signal and you have to call if you have time during the day, stay on hold and finally they tell you the solution is to drive the car. Why do I have this service if I rarely drive the car? Go with a traditional insurer and save yourself a headache.

Why is to so hard to speak to customer service to cancel the policy. Tried a couple of times and put on hold more than 15 minutes failing to speak to customer service I later hangup.
Later sent a message on 5/24 to cancel the policy on 5/28 but got a response on 5/30 that can't cancel via email and asking again to go back to the Web site or call to cancel. Web site does not provide proper direction to cancel the policy. When I finally able to locate the cancel the policy on web site, cancellation effective date has passed asking me to select a future date which they are going to charge to my credit card.

Tilly from customer service was not understanding the issue and refused to transfer me to the supervisor. I had my agent add a car to the policy in addition to the other 2 cars that I had there. When I got my bill a month later, I noticed I was being charged for miles driven during a turo trip, so I called. Tilly stated that even though my turo account was already linked, the last car wasn't showing as a turo vehicle and refused to give me a credit for a turo trip miles. I am switching from this company based on this experience. Tilly had a major attitude and refused to help and understand the situation from the customer point of view.
