  • Electronic Frontier Foundation

6/22/11

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is endorsed through many media sources, along with various businesses. The Electronic Frontier Foundation supports and advocates freedom of speech and privacy through the network world. The site states "when our freedoms in the networked world come under attack, the Electronic Frontier Foundation is the first line of defense". I could not say it better - they are the heroes of the internet world.

  • Cover Your Tracks

"Is your browser configuration rare or unique? If so, web sites may be able to track you, even if you limit or disable cookies". Basically, Panopticlick tests your browser to see how traceable your browser really is. Give it a shot! I found the results interesting.

I like this forum because naturally, I'm a curious person. I'm open to learning new things about the world, or the afterlife. This forum is based on terrorism, paranormal events, government cover ups, conspiracies such as the New World Order and much more.

It is a very active community, with around 800 new threads each week. Customer Service is fine - they responded to my email within 48hrs and it addressed my concern on the response.

However - at a social level on the forum, many come across as very paranoid and make a post about something before they did research about it. However - I have managed to find some decent posts, and many being helpful.

Like the newspaper - this forum can be depressing. In other words - don't over use this site. Don't take all the information in a serious way. Half of the information that spreads through these forums are either false or someone being over dramatic.

  • SevenForums

Sevenforums.com is the place to go when an issue arises with your computer or you want to meet like-minded people. The forum covers many areas ranging from security to software, networks to browsers and much more. The forum has over 1.5 million posts and almost 159,000 members which makes it the biggest and most active Windows 7 forum on the web. Responses are quiet fast on the forum, and they're a really nice and helpful community.

  • If I Die

I couldn't resist laughing at this Facebook app. The "Welcome video" that pops up on its page when you enter was hilarious! But it also has a serious side. The Facebook app basically works like this: you add the app > film a short video > select three people who have to confirm your death > when all three confirm your death when you pass away they will receive this video.

I found this app through the site TED (http://www.sitejabber.com/reviews/www.ted.com). If you're interested listening to the speech, it's called "Adam Ostrow: after your final status message".

  • Hotspot Shield

8/9/11

Don't use at all! I had a very bad experience with this VPN.
Just after installing this, I noticed HotSpotShield contains malicious software, and a browser exploit. I suppose I better change all my passwords, too!

  • Gmail

7/25/11

I love Gmail! I have used this email service for around two to three years without problems. I love the new Gmail design, I love how it offers fantastic security measures and most of all how everything is connected.

Google has improved in regards to design over the years, but over the past several months Gmail and Google have improved quiet significantly.

Gmail, along with all their other services now support two-step authentication. For example, depending on how important your account is to you, you can enable a verification code to be send to your phone each time you login through a different computer or browser. This then means you have to enter your password AND enter a code sent to your phone. This step is a fantastic Google, Inc. Initiative.

Does logging into several accounts each day become annoying? Do you prefer managing all your data in one central place? Then Gmail is a great start. For one, logging into Gmail will also give you access to he Google Calender, CRM, YouTube, Bookmarks, photos, documents, and so much more! In addition to this, with Google, you can connect your account with other services. For example, you sign into Google and you have connected your account with Zoho, then you can access their site at the same time.

  • Free Software Foundation

7/5/11

The Free Software Foundations mission is to secure the future of individuals, schools and businesses around the world. This site provides many free programs that you can install. I haven't come across viruses, or any problems with the site or the downloads.

  • A-asics

7/3/11

According to a review from McAfee SiteAdvisor "Scam from China selling copyright infringing items. Either you get some low quality junk, or they just steal your money". I pretty much agree. This is not the official Asics shoe store. It's a scam.

  • Rome2rio

This travel planner is still in Beta mode, but really does make life that much easier by providing you with directions by plane, trains and cars. It is pretty accurate and you can search for over 670 airlines across the world.

  • Browserprotect.org

8/22/11

I'm not sure whether it's OK to write a review based on suspicion - but I'll go ahead with it anyway and I'm happy to be proved wrong.

I have been using this on Firefox for about three months now. In the options panel there is a button to disable the "show Facebook share option upon hijack alert". I clicked to disable this then it automatically turns itself back on. Then on the Firefox site, the developer has a picture of the extension but guess what? The thing it doesn't show is that it has that Facebook share button.

I then checked WOT and found a review by "alexandergkelly" which makes me even more suspicious.

Again - this review is based on suspicion and not necessarily facts. I'm happy to have someone here prove me wrong.

  • eBaum's World

8/3/11

I am disgusted with this website after discovering a horrible, and sick video that I believe is illegal to even film, yet publish this on a site for the world (and even children to see). I don't want to give the direct link to the video, but the video contained a close encounter of a real man blowing up after he had a bomb attached to his neck (like the one currently happening in Sydney, Australia). The site is also taking self-credit, and most videos are plagiarised. I find nothing funny about a man been killed due to an explosive device.

  • FileHippo

6/27/11

FileHippo.com is a fantastic source to get downloads from. All the programs on this site are 100% free and don't contain viruses, malicious software or spam. Don't even have to register! It even comes with a 'FileHippo Update Checker' which will check and inform you when they're updates available.

GMX
  • GMX

6/23/11

I have been testing GMX e-mail over time, and have found it to be a positive experience. The e-mail supports SSL and for added protection, I recommend the Firefox extension HTTPS Everywhere.

GMX has 2GB free storage that works in a similar way to Dropbox. In addition to this, GMX has a built in antivirus scanner that will go through all your emails to make sure you're not harmed from malicious scripts. I am however giving this website three stars because after looking at their Facebook page, their was many complaints. For example, complaints of people losing accounts, or not being able to access them. But from my personal experience - it was positive.

  • Social Security Numbers Online

6/20/11

So I came across this SSN Registry website, thinking I was going to have to write a -beware- report on SiteJabber. However - the website doesn't actually ask for your SSN, but rather asks for your name and location then gives you a picture that will make you laugh. Nothing to worry about. Totally safe.

  • Bleeping Computer

6/9/11

I should send my praise to this site and recommend it to others. I was using Norton Power Eraser and a file named "pxhelp20. Sys" came up as unsafe. I almost went ahead and and removed it from my computer. However because it was in my system32 I wanted to exercise caution. I did a Google search and found this website which I found helpful. It stated that it was a needed program to start the computer up. Without this site (and a little brain of course!), I probably would have killed my computer. So highly recommended site.

  • Fake Name Generator

6/6/11

Its a really good website. Protecting an identity online can often be hard, but with this fake-name generator it will help you generate a fake name along with address, numbers, etc according to your gender and location. Rest assured, this website is RANDOMLY generated as stated in the Privacy Policy.

  • Cert.at

9/24/11

Official website for the Austrian national Computer Emergency Response Team, (CERT).

CERT manages IT-security in a national context. During a IT-security incident, Government Agencies must report and seek advice from this department. This site also offers tech news and downloads.

Note:
However as of 24-Sept-2011 I've discovered malicious software in one of the downloads. I would assume that this website was hacked and a virus implanted in the download. I have contacted the agency about the issue and it should be dealt with soon.

But all in all - this shows that no site is 100% safe. Even a Government website can be hacked without them knowing while it distributes malware to users.

  • StumbleUpon

9/6/11

StumbleUpon is OK. I agree with TN though. It's a complete mess and needs an improvement to the interface. The site also lacks speed and doesn't provide very accurate results. I find it annoying when I stumble, then about five minutes later I stumble upon the same site.

But StumbleUpon must be doing something right with over 1 billion Stumbles each month. What is even more interesting is that according to StatCounter, StumbleUpon made up 47.11 percent of all social traffic in the United States in July 2011.

I've always wondered how many viruses people have received from this site. It isn't like you're on Google where you can use Norton Safeweb, SiteJabber or WOT to check whether the site is safe. This is because you don't know what the next site is. I've had a few alerts from Norton when using this service - so please be careful. I recommend a computer scan after using their service.

  • Fitsec

9/6/11

Fitsec is a Finnish website based on information security and penetration testing. The reason why I'm doing a review is they have an excellent site, along with a really good download that I found in my feeds from Techworld that mentions a specific download.

The download link is here: http://fitsec.com/blog/index.php/2011/08/15/tool-release-a-banking-trojan-detection-tool/ (a blog post on their site).

This download is free and it checks your computer for "banking Trojans". It can detect the top five banking Trojan families: Zeus, SpyEye, Carberp, Gozi and Patcher. If they are active on the computer it will let you know through your command window. It will also let you know place to find free antivirus software.

Remember the site is in Finnish. The top right corner will give you the option to change the language into English.
