I'm so excited to be able to get this every month now! This got my son out of his room and to put his phone down for a little bit! It's totally worth it to upgrade to the premium version, I can't believe how many snacks and 1 drink we got! Wonderful variety also! Thank you Tokyo Treat for getting my son excited about something and to spend some time with me!
They were great until the pandemic came, then the true service showed. They refused to continue shipping box's even though i have a yearly subscription, and refuse to return my money.
They are simply keeping my prepaid money (which is over €350) and refuse to return or offer any compensation or other service which doesn't require me investing more money to receive a box.
Save yourself the hassle and use another service which actually cares about their customers.
So I placed an order for a 3 month gift subscription but I misunderstood where I was to enter the recipients info, and the email to claim my gift came to me instead. Within an hour of placing that order, I tried to cancel, but their steps to do so do not even take you to any page resembling their illustrations with a cancellation "button" - only a summary of the order. Finally after multiple tries their "customer portal" - which by this time felt like a more apt name would be "customer portal to a black hole", it said the order was cancelled, so I made a new order with the correct info - but no refund for the $100.34 for the 1st one. Attached is a screenshot of their latest response from customer service. This is THE most unbelievably insane statement I've ever heard From a company before.
The contents are lovely and well packaged, but they give you no warning when they will charge your card and by then it's too late to cancel. The "customer service" is rude and completely unhelpful.
I thought this was a nice birthday gift for my 14 year old daughter, but I was given no option or reminder that the subscription was going to renew at the year mark. Circumstances had changed and I can no longer afford it, but they refuse to help. This experience has ruined what was an otherwise nice product.
I originally subscribed for a year. The boxes are definitely not worth the money they charge. There have also been boxes where items were not available and were not sent. The main reason for my 1 star rating is that they auto renew your subscription without any heads up. I was not aware of this. I emailed several times to tell them I did not authorize the payment (even though I had cancelled) and requested a refund. There is absolutely no reason I should be stuck with another year of this subscription. It is a complete waste of money for what they actually send.
I ordered a 3 month subscription to the service, but they charged me for 12 months! That's way more than I wanted to spend! Beware, in the hard to find terms of service, it says they will not give reasons for any reason, even though this was their fault! There is no US phone number and when you email them, if you get a response at all, it just says they received your email and does not address your question. I would not recommend this service to anyone!
I ordered this last year (2019) and my box took about 6 months to arrive; I vowed never to buy it again. However, I heard they had a new shipping system, so I tried again. It came in a matter of weeks. Much improved! The one MAJOR criticism I have is the quantity of some of the treats. There were 5 treats in my box that were a quantity of 1. One gummy, one marshmallow treat, one grape soda gummy. Not even enough for my family to share and other subscription boxes I receive, at the same price, have much better quantities. They really plan for the family aspect. This box boasts a large amount of treats, but when you realize how small the portions are in some of them, the bang for your buck is disappointing, even more so, when you add the additional money for shipping in, which other subscriptions include.
The box is great and it is loaded with a lot of items. It also came just in time for Valentine's Day, which was a lot of fun. I do wish the monthly cost was cheaper or you didn't have to pay for each month right away, if you select a 6 month term.
I have purchased Tokyo Treat boxes I believe 6 times, the boxes in the past have been pretty fun and offered some interesting snacks. The Aug 2020 box is pretty lame, one piece of gum, one bland rice cracker, a few wasabi peas, vanilla coke, no extra treats a reduced zine, for $50 I won't be buying again.
Fairly large array of items (at least with the premium box), but mostly just sweets; Lacks the variety of competing services like Bokksu. If you're really into candy that might be fine, though it does get a bit repetitive.
The monthly theme and little bits of Japanese culture are kinda cute.
The biggest con is that it feels a bit like... well, a con.
They really go out of their way to obscure the auto-renewal of the subscription and keep it in fine print, give no option to opt out of it, and provide no reminders until the next payment has been processed. Also, of course, no refunds once the payment has been made, even if the payment is for multiple months and none of them have actually shipped yet.
When opening a ticket with their support system, one of the main answers that automatically pops up is exactly about this, stating only that they don't give refunds. So, you can tell this is an issue that happens to a lot of customers, who end up paying hundreds of dollars unintentionally. Not surprising, since the company clearly made intentional design choices to encourage these kinds of "accidents".
On top of that, they offer rewards for giving them reviews, hoping to drown out the complaints they get for their poor customer service with even_more_ shady manipulation.
In my book, honest business practices are more important than any specific product (especially considering the quality of the product isn't exceptional either, and arguably worse than their competitors), which is the main cause for the low score.
I can excuse the shipping getting delayed by 4 months due to the pandemic. I can even excuse them charging a little bit extra to try and get me my box somehow. What I can NOT excuse is important information regarding "auto-resubscription" conveniently hidden behind a little question mark button, which you may or may not notice when buying these boxes. I'm fairly sure this is illegal in the EU, or at the very least questionable grey area. What's the point of 1, 3, 6 or 12 month subscriptions, if the subscription continues indefinitely anyways, completely automatically?! They just charged me automatically without even asking and took the money. I didn't even receive the first box at the time and they already charge for another one!
More importantly, I noticed within a day that the money for another subscription was charged from my bank account. I immediately contacted their support to cancel and refund the sub. They said there's nothing they can do about it, even though I contacted them before they even began packing the contents of the box!
I did finally get the box 4 months later, but I don't understand why they go out of their way to trick people out of their money. The box is good. They don't need to do this. I'm still waiting for the 2nd box from the auto-resubscription (even though both got shipped at the same time).
Overall I have been happy with my boxes. My only complaint was that I received my may box 2 months late on July 8th and customer service was horrible.
It would be way cheaper to go to a Japanese market and get all of these snacks yourself, if you have that option.
Ordered mine not to long ago! Got here super fast, and nothing was out of shape! Haven't quite tried everything so far but Its got a good variety and I'm happy to know what's what before I actually taste it.
I absolutely LOVE these boxes! I have ordered several this year and they send the best snacks! They send many different things too so you get to try a lot of things that I would never see in my local stores since they typically sell minimal international snacks. I really enjoy them. Highly recommend!
Im from canada, so eating these snacks was definitely an experience. The box was packed very nicely and came so fast! I was expecting it to take a while since im international. They even include a description for each snack inside! So much fun to sit down and go through with family or friends.
Who does not love to get a package each month with exciting goods.
Never had a problem with the boxes.
I would recommend it!
The boxes take about 2 weeks from shipping to my house (in the netherlands), thats crazy fast.
All the different foods and drinks remind me of my trip to Japan. I got so much love for this company.
Was a little wary about purchasing from here after reading plenty of negative reviews and lost box horror stories, by I'm pleased to announce that my experience was pretty much stress free! It arrived in three weeks and only a couple of the small snacks got a bit crushed. I love the range of snacks and the amount that were given. Would definitely purchase another box in the future.
Perfect experience. I ordered my box only about 2 weeks ago and already received it. Everything was packaged nicely and arrived in tack. The sizes of the snacks were really good too, I really have enjoyed everything I've tried so far. I would definitely recommend
Tokyo Treat is great for making a surprise with something special to someone close. The shipping is currently very fast and you have enough time to get it till Christmas! A lot of nice, sweet, salty and interesting sweets in the package. Its worth it!
Answer: It is one of the worst ones out there. If anything goes wrong they refuse any sort of customer service. No refunds, no placements even if the box never arrives.
Answer: It usually takes days to get a response & only through email. Quite frustrating.
Answer: I've always been a fan of Japanese culture. I've purchased Japanese treats before at conventions and loved them. I regret choosing TokyoTreat though.
TokyoTreat has a rating of 4 stars from 728 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally satisfied with their purchases. Reviewers satisfied with TokyoTreat most frequently mention subscription box, japanese snacks and new things. TokyoTreat ranks 10th among Subscription Shopping sites.
