What a scam!

I paid for a one-time use of the service. The information that I acquired was extremely inaccurate and incomplete. I was then billed a monthly fee $24.95 saying I had signed up for a free 7 day trial.
Don't waste your money, I got vastly better results from just searching newspapers.com

Deceptive billing practices, misleading advertisements but excellent customer service to handle their many complaints. This is a Mickey Mouse company so stay away. There are many better resources out there so do your homework.

Terrible...
September 11, 2012

Terrible... a people search website that promises to retrieve info from hundreds of databases, including social sites... has reverse phone lookup, etc. Perhaps before people began tightening down on internet privacy, this site could have been effective, but now there's no info available out there on anybody. Usually Spokeo's search cannot even find someone who is registered on Facebook. No refunds are given either, so if you sign up for the 3 or 6 month subscription in hopes of saving money, they will not give you a refund when you discover their site is a scam.

Spokeo is a People Search Engine, and aggregates only publicly-accessible data from a multitude of sources, such as social networks, public records, phone listings, marketing surveys and more. For this reason, Spokeo preserves and protects the privacy terms of all third-party content and does not grant access to private email accounts, profiles or blogs. Our information depends entirely on the amount of digital footprints left by email users, as well as the privacy settings maintained by the user. The reason you did not see profile matches for the individual you were searching for may be because they have their profiles set to private. These days, the privacy settings, especially at Facebook are very customizable. Should the user (of one of our supported sites) not want to be found, we honor that at Spokeo.

While Spokeo does have a no-refund policy, we do of course make exceptions in situations of extreme dissatisfaction with our service. I have sent you a private message regarding a full refund. I apologize again for the frustration that this has caused you.

Scam!
January 4, 2022

Ran an number for $1 - a few days later $25 monthly reoccurring charge tagged on. CROOKS! So annoyed. Checked my spam folder and sure enough- they send an email saying you're locked in after the fact. I will never use their service again. Buyer beware.

You pay for the membership fee of whatever, 14.95$ and you're given about as basic info as you'd get from a google search. Then to find out anything else, it's a whole host of other fees tacked on. Wanna see social media? Another 5.95. Oh want to see court records? Another 9.95. Oh how about marriage certificates. That'll be another 4.95. By the time you have all the info you want you've spent 200$ and I'm sure the info you get out of that is worthless too. Awful. Awful. Awful. I'll never fall for one of these stupid scam sites again.

UPDATE:
I like how the response from the website itself has absolutely nothing to do with what I said in my review as well, shows how awesome they really are. The fact that they would even respond with a bot or whatever speaks volumes. Unbelievable. Scam scam scam. Shut your garbage site down spokeo.

Spokeo People Search allows you to search for anyone by Name, Reverse Email, Reverse Phone or Username. Our database covers a multitude of social networks, public records, marketing lists and more to reveal demographic details, public profiles, etc. Since there is no human involved, the data is not verified and might not be accurate. Moreover, many sources do not refresh their data often. Our Terms of Use states clearly that we are a Search Engine, and do not create, maintain or modify any of the information you see. For this reason, we cannot guarantee full or accurate information for every name, phone number, email address or username you search for, as the results vary so much from person to person.

Some was true, and some of it was way off! Had my dead husband still living at an address that we rented for one year, 14 yrs ago! He lives there with his wife and three kids! OK...! Getting kinda scary I think!

Spokeo IS a scam
January 21, 2014

Spokeo IS a scam. Paid to get information about myself. I own properties, been paying taxes for 20 years, lived in three major metropolitan areas, have credit cards, etc etc etc... and yet, I go nothing. No information found. These people didn't even bother to look. You pay, and now your money goes to a black hole and never gets back. I contacted Spokeo twice by email, at the address they provide for contact! And got no replies, no answer, and no resolution. Be very careful with these people.

By the way, I Google myself and get plenty of information already within the first few links, including my own current phone number. I make this clarification just in case Spokeo decides to "answer" below (as they use to do with other reviews) claiming that it only aggregates publicly available data. My data are out there, all over the place. And I was hoping Spokeo would be able to get something else that I missed.

I've requested a basic search and was charged for an enhanced one because the payment page kept going backwards and forwards.
The majority of the information was about neighbours which is really not important. Save your money and go somewhere else. Customer service was not helpful either although they replied!

Deceptive and Fraudulent Buisness Partices
December 10, 2022

Spokeo when you use their site to do a $1 search, without consent start taking a monthly fee of $25 dollars for a service you have not agreed to or instructed. The right to refuse is buried in their terms and conditions even though there is no actual notification that this $1 search is going to be, without consent or agreement charged to your credit cards for a monthly fee. This aspect of their service is basically fraud, their business practice is based on deception, and they should be avoided. This is an expression of my opinion.

This site is terrible

This site is terrible. I signed up for the 3 month subscription, and only after I performed a few searches was I informed of the "monthly quota." I was attempting to search for people for my high school reunion, so I needed more than the few searches allotted, and nowhere are you told before signing up that there is a limit.

When I spoke to customer service, they sent me through the generic support cycle, and kept indirectly blaming me for not understanding the services correctly (much like their comments on other posts here). "I'm sorry you don't understand the terms" is not an appropriate response to a customer complaint. It's patronizing and offensive.

If you were a reputable company, you would clearly place your terms upfront, to allow people to choose whether your service is right for them or not. Get it together, Spokeo.

This implementation will not only ensure that your email searches continue to remain smooth and quick, but also will allow us to add more supported networks into our database in the future. This term is made very clear on our payment page, as it is included in the disclaimer which has to be agreed to before the purchase is processed. To ensure that our payers are aware of this, we even provide the link for the Plan Specification as part of the disclaimer.

I wish to point out, however, that your account's search quotas reset automatically every month, providing you full, comprehensive access again thereafter (unused searches will not roll over). Also, please note that all searches count towards your quota, even those that provide little or no results. Horrible service, inaccurate service, cancelling accounts with legitimate inquiries, lack of search criteria, overpriced memberships, call in wait times too long and no interests in providing useful background checks for potential employers! What was the point in developing this website?

Horrible company
August 3, 2023

When you do a.95 trail and get charged 29.95 and unsubscribe then proceed to get charged for the next 2 months, at this point I will be getting to FTC and a lawyer involve for false charges and basically identity theft (the fraudulent acquisition and use of a person's private identifying information, usually for financial gain)

I wanted to do a reverse phone lookup. I got sucked in because once I input the phone number, their web site responded that they had all the relevant information I was looking for: Name, Address, Family members, Date of Birth, etc. Once I paid my money and clicked on the report button, all of those fields showed up with "Unknown" beside them except for the location field for the phone number, which I already knew because you can find that out by simply looking up the area code. Stay away. Should have looked at reviews first. This is an ugly, ugly scam. Just glad I didn't sign up for one of there monthly accounts; at least I hope I didn't. You never know with crooks like this.

This is one of the sites you will never want to deal with, I made a search for a phone number and paid. 99 cents, the search was totally helpless, and I ended up been charged 19.95 every month and I just realized after 3 months, with something I just didn't even know I had. They don't send any payment receipt so you don't figure out that you are being charged. I'm going to dispute through my bank because I tried to contact them online and no response. This site should definitely be shut down because it's stealing money to people!

I'm sorry for any misunderstanding and certainly wish to help resolve the issue. When you signed up you selected our Single Search with Premium Trial plan, which provided you with an initial $0.95 Single Record as well as additional free Premium access for 7 days. As long as the trial is cancelled within 7 days, the account does not continue. Because your trial was not disabled within 7 days, a recurring subscription fee began to charge. Accounts of this type automatically renew if left active to prevent any service interruption. We try to make this very clear by detailing this on our payment page, including it in the disclaimer which has to be agreed to before the purchase is processed. In addition, the information is included in the confirmation receipt sent immediately after payment, as well as in our Terms of Use. I do apologize again if this was unclear in any way.

Their game is to charge their customers for services they don't use by not cancelling when the subscription is requested to be cancelled. This has to be a horrible business model, would love to know who runs this site. Going to have to count on karma to fix this one, I am out a bunch of money for not watching my accounts closely.

I received your complaint to the Sitejabber.com page for Spokeo, on May 25,2022 regarding our service, and I am happy to assist in resolving this matter.

Please allow me to explain the charges associated with the services selected to your account. Since all Spokeo subscriptions automatically renew to prevent service interruption, trials that were left unchanged, were charged on the service's renewal date. I apologize if this was unclear.

Spokeo subscriptions can be cancelled at any point during the subscription term.} For instructions on how to cancel, please view the following article in our Help Center: https://help.spokeo.com/hc/en-us/articles/115010516568-How-do-I-cancel-my-Spokeo-subscription-

Please note that cancelling your service only disables your subscription from renewing and does not offer a refund. Since all Spokeo services are prepaid, your service will last the duration of the period purchased.

Unfortunately I was unable to locate a Spokeo account with the information provided in your complaint to assist you with your concern. To help you further with this complaint, please provide the following information in an email message to customercare@spokeo.com with the subject title of “Sitejabber.com Review Site Complaint”:

- your full name, or the name(s) of any secondary authorized user(s) on the credit or debit card(s) charged

- last 4 digits of the credit or debit card(s) billed, or any expired or secondary card(s)

False Advertising - NOT free NOR provides

Paid for one search with one phone number to find out what this contact's name is. The free trial doesn't include this first report. Now that I paid for it, the only useful information I was given from the paid search... Was a located city. I still do NOT KNOW the name, not the preferred inclusion of public records or address. I believed I was wronged. I want my 95 cents back, but that's a small price to pay for preventing others from making the same mistake. Hopefully this testimonial is viewable. If not, I'll find someone somewhere to hear my completely truthful testimonial of my totally dissatisfied experience here.

Spokeo has been ridiculously user-friendly (I'm not tech-savvy what-so-ever), quick, efficient, up-to-date and extremely thorough, but not with a bunch of details no one will ever need. I've left the other sites that do the same thing Spokeo does for several reasons. To me, the amount of time it takes to download the information I'd request was obnoxious. I don't have all day to wait on the same info Spokeo gives me in the blink of any eye. A+

My poor unsuspecting husband used spokeo for a single search and the result was not only was he charged the single search of 0.95 which was fine, but when his credit card statement came, he was also charged $15.95,4.95, $30 x 2, and a whopping $89.95! When he finally reached someone with customer service at least the guy that helped him sounded professional, and acted like he truly wanted to resolve things. We did get the $15.95 reversed, but was told the other charges were not related to them. Either someone at spokeo used his credit card information to make purchases, but how can we prove this without getting an investigator involved. I think the other reviews are right. Just don't get involved with them! It's too much trouble!

When you signed up you selected our Single Search with Premium Trial plan, which provided you with an initial $0.95 Single Record as well as additional free Premium access for 7 days. Unfortunately, because the trial was not cancelled within 7 days, a recurring subscription fee of $19.95 began to charge. Rip off

Rip off. Information provided could have been obtained by white pages. Does not provide the information that the website says it will. I even tried my own personal search. Same lack of information. WASTE OF MONEY. Cancellation was immediate. Had to send email for refund to: *******@spokeo.com

I'm sorry to hear that our service did not meet your expectations. Spokeo showcases the power of information aggregation, as the data is gathered from a multitude of different sources, such as social networks, public records, phone listings, marketing surveys and more. However, machine aggregation has its limits. Since there is no human involved, the data is not verified and might not be accurate. Moreover, many sources do not refresh their data often. Our Terms of Use states clearly that we are a Search Engine, and do not create, maintain or modify any of the information you see. For this reason, we cannot guarantee full or accurate information for every name, phone number, email address or username you search for, as the results vary so much from person to person. We are only as good as our sources, and our engineers are working hard on new algorithms to improve our data accuracy. I do apologize again for the inconvenience.
