As one who DOES read all the fine print, there's no surprise why there's such anguish and anger below from the many who did NOT read the fine print, and to be perfectly honest, not through any fault of their own, because they would not normally assume there IS fine print to read. The $10 cash reward advertisement is in the colors and font of Walmart, which is why so many people in these reviews get confused. Clearly, ShopSmarter intends to confuse Walmart shoppers into believing that they are being offered this through trusted Walmart. Walmart isn't going to screw them over. But it's rather unfortunate that Walmart allows a third-party ad to look almost exactly like their own website which is certain to confuse their customers. So this company literally banks on the fact that most people do not read the fine print. With all of that said, and even with a "yucky" feeling about the way the company promoted the service, I still thought I might be able to come out ahead by making over $2400 in purchases a year (thereby earning more than enough to cover the monthly fee). However, further searching of these reviews showed several big purchasers who mysteriously became "locked out" of their accounts, or had purchase history disappear, or were asked for extensive documentation of past purchases, or found their account suddenly "locked." So, it would seem they'll continue to happily bill everyone who had no clue that they have the service until they realize that this monthly charge is occurring. Yet for the those who DID read all the fine print and DID want this service (who would clearly only be big purchasers to begin with, since that's the only way the rebates would cover the monthly cost) there appears to be some executives on the back end playing around with accounts and perhaps either randomly or systematically locking any that have balances that are just a tad too big. Bingo, account cancelled, order history deleted, and then just blame the customer for cancelling the account, as reported by one reviewer below. Or force the customer to jump through dozens of hoops to "prove" he made his own purchases, as reported by another. Thank you Sitejabber for yet again saving me hours of anguish, frustration and money.
thank you everyone for you reviews I almost fell for this !! I have always been big on reviews. When I saw it requested credit card information I immediately looked up reviews
Hi Christina,
I apologize for any confusion you had regarding our program. We do believe we make it clear about the membership prior to joining. The membership fee is listed 3 times prior to being billed.
If you have any questions, please let me know!
I was about to fall for this scam. I was like oh, that's cool, get $10 for nothing! Your reviews saved my bank account! Thank you!
I believe you will find that the labor involved to be certain that any purchase is honored for rebate is worth more than the actual cash rewards you will receive.
I just started my 7 day trial and nothing seems sneaky or deceitful yet. Okay, maybe a little sneaky, but I have to fold myself for not looking for their into it before signing on.
Yes, they do tell you it's a membership, so I figured there was obviously a membership fee. I saw nothing that told me it was monthly, yearly or weekly, so I called them to ask.
The guy was pretty nice and was more than happy to fill me in. He told me there was a $9.97 recurring monthly charge after my initial 7-Day trial. This trial cost me $1.97, which I was not told about and didn't see it anywhere on the page when I signed up. But they were taking my credit card number so I knew there was a fee or a potential fee.
$10 might sound like a large monthly fee, until you break it down. You get 10% back on every purchase at one of their sponsored stores. The stores they cover are all popular stores, Home Depot, Walmart, Dunkin Donuts Etc. Now right now were in the Christmas shopping season, so I obviously have plans on making a few purchases. It will obviously pay out for me during my trial period, If they are legit. A 10% of $100 is $10. So I would only have to spend $100 through them to break even with that $10 monthly fee. Obviously during the Christmas season it's more likely I'm going to spend, the rest of the year, I'm not absolutely sure about. I don't think I would be spending $100 EVERY month, so I'll probably cancel when my shopping slows down.
After I cancel, it will come back and change my review if things didn't go as planned. If I don't write back then I'll leave my 5-star review.
If you shop frequently, this seems like the ideal thing for you.
Also, if I find I'm not shopping enough to cover the monthly fee, I can simply shop through the place I've been doing it, it's free over there, and I make various percentages off the same stores. The percentage is very, they also very in the department the payback is in.
It clearly states that there will be a monthly fee, you guys really thought they will write that there will be a monthly fee and they wont charge you?
I already got checks from them for over $500!
They will lock you out of your account when you are trying to login to cancel on your 5th day. You will try and request that your password be sent to your email then it gives you an error that there is no such member at the email address and last name requested. Stay away from this place. What a scam! They bribe you into getting an account to receive the $10 rebate only to find out that you cannot login and cancel on your 5th day.
Yep was scammed again by shop smarter. Do not yet know how though but i encourage all who lost money to shop smarter scam to google search how to make complaint to federal trade commision. Siple online complaint form take 5-10 minutes to fill out. Big brother will track scammers down. Hhaahahahahaha
I don't know where these other people are looking. It clearly states a monthly fee when signing up. I have saved buckets of money with shopsmarter. Ding a lings!
This company through third party will access your account number and will charge your account without your permission on monthly bases, until you call them to cancel the fake membership. Be carful
Got some rebate on small purchases, but they refused to pay rebate for a big item ($1500) that we bought from Home Depot. We picked up the items FROM the store but ShopSmarter said they can not pay for 'Items Shipped to Store'. Although my first language is not English, but anyone can understand 'picking up something from store' and 'ordering something not readily available at the store but will eventually be shipped to the store' are completely different things. These liars contradicted themselves as they offered cash back for small items that we actually picked up from the store before. Awe full experience. Wish I could take the one star away. Stay away from them.
Beware of the click and bait things, she had no idea she did anything untill seeing a charge on our statement. I will be filing a complaint with USA.GOV and the local DA.
Wow! Am I grateful when asked for my credit card information I became suspicious and search for reviews. When I went back to the website I couldn't even find anywhere they disclosed these excessive fees of over $120 a year for this pathetic service. I sent Walmart an email telling them they just lost a customer for good. Thanks site jabber!
Just made a purchase from walmart.com and got the shopsmarter offer. I balked at the "start here" page because I didn't see a list of what merchants participated and it wanted an email address (and I already get too much crap email.) So I did a search and found the sitejabber reviews. Thanks! (the fee was not disclosed on the "start here" page.)
I was puzzled as to why there were any positive reviews at all, so I took a look at them. It looks like if you are a 'big spender' and you pay your credit cards in full each month if might be an OK deal. In my estimate you'd have to spend at least $1500. 00 year on applicable merchandise at participating merchants just to break even. To be worth the fees and hassle, I'd need to spend at least double that and that ain't gonna happen. So it would be a bad deal for me.
In my opinion there should be full disclosure upfront, anything less is unethical.
I thought, why not get a 10 dollar rebate? I saw that it asked for my card number which I thought was very suspicious. I looked up reviews right before I finalized the service and boy am I glad i did. I almost fell for it. DONT DO IT!
Ordered a sewing machine, offered a $10 rebate. Applied for the rebate, no rebate but a monthly fee of $9.97, plus $1.97 "other" fee. I called tonight and told them to refund my money and forget the supposed rebate on the sewing machine. I'm going to find out why Walmart promotes these people. I should have read more closely the part about a monthly fee, and then I would have "Shopped Smarter"!!!
I was scammed when placing an order at Walmart.com, just like all these other reviewers. Didn't get a $10 rebate, didn't get a free trial of this fake "service" but they got my card info when I placed my Walmart order! As soon as it appeared on my statement I went online to cancel it. But then it showed up again on my next statement. I called *******536 and spoke to a woman who said it was cancelled. I asked why it was on my statement again and she said " I just cancelled it right now." THEY OWE ME A REFUND FOR TWO MONTHS. THIS IS CHEATING AND OBVIOUSLY IT'S CONNECTED TO WALMART.COM.
GIANT RIPOFF BY WALMART! STAY 100 MILES AWAY FROM SHOPSMARTER.COM, I HAVE REPORTED THIS TO MY CREDIT CARD COMPANY AND MADE A COMPLAINT TO WALMART1
Stay away! I was shopping on Walmart.com when I have gotten an offer from ShopSmarter that promised me a $10 rebate for the purchase I have made. I didn't get any rebates. Instead my accounts was charged. I don't understands why this company is not under investigation yet. Shame on Walmart as well!
Answer: I had the same problem. I called and got it canceled. Got a new credit card and then reported them to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear about the confusion you have regarding our program. We do believe that we make it clear regarding the membership fee. It is listed 3 times prior to being charged.
Our program does have rules that we ask our members to abide by. If an account is locked due to possible fraudulent behavior, the member certainly has the opportunity and the right to explain. We send them an email once we lock their account, and will also issue a refund immediately to the member if we do not reinstate their account. Furthermore, when a members account is locked, we explain exactly why the account was locked. We do have terms and conditions which we ask our members to follow. We ask that ShopSmarter.com is used for personal use only. ShopSmarter.com is not for high volume, resale orders and also can not be used for business purposes. We also only allow one membership per household. If you do not believe these terms are fair, please let me know, however if you shop through your account for personal use, you would have no need to worry about your account being locked.
People who shop online often certainly save money by using our program. I apologize you did not find our program helpful.
