They use fake postings on craiglist and bots to send you spam texts encouraging you to join the site. In the attached screenshot you can see the link they sent me which redirects to roomster.com. Doesn't get much scummier than this.
Holy crap. I've been dealing with this stupid site for the past few days. I bought a 3 day subscription assuming it would last just 3 days. HAHAHAHAHA NOPE. They renew your account for 30 bucks. Now my bank account is overdrafted and I don't have the money to pay for it. I can't make a claim because these people tell you in the fine print that they're worthless swine. So unless you are smart about canceling your subscription before the time is up, then don't use this site. Also, all of the "support" is handled on the website. There is no number you can call, no live person you can talk to. After my first message was responded to, the rest of my messages were BLATANTLY IGNORED. Great PR there roomster. Stay the heck away from this terrible site.
Signed up for 3 day trial and on day 3 they charged my card $30. Emailed them because their phone does not take call for billing. They refuse to refund my money. I took out the trial on the 14th and they charged me at noon on the 17th. The 3rd day. Then they refuse to refund. I will have an attorney write these crooks a letter. And people are correct they use fake people.
I could not upload multiple photos despite the site saying you can add more than 1. Every time I attempted to add a 2nd photo it said the max limit is 6mb, even though I was well below the limit. It was also not super intuitive to find where the listing was on my profile to edit it, and it's rather hidden that you have to pay for the messaging service.
Decided to take a gap year after college to live abroad and found a great room to rent in Paris on Roomster, even though I was in the US communicating through the listing was very easy and I'm so happy with my new place! J'adore Roomster!
TERRIBLE. COMPLETE SCAM. The free service is useless, and the selection so limited that craigslist makes it look like a joke. When you try the 3 day 5 dollar subscription they CHARGE YOU $30 WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT when the 3 days is up! If you google 'roomster scam' you get a ton of results. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Roomster-is-a-SCAM/**************?sk=timeline

How can this website be legal? How is it legally okay to charge someone without their express consent? They didn't even try to make it clear or upfront. Awful people, terrible business model, I can't wait for them to be replaced or taken to court for being so fraudulent. We will see if they ever refund my money. I have my doubts. Even if they do, this 'business' still deserves 0 stars.
I just broke up with my girl and I had practically been livin with her so I needed sth so went on here and put a profile up of myself didn’t expect much but things happened and found a place in Queens. I stayed with a friend while looking so things were chill. Met some cool pp on here
Thanks to Roomster.com I was able to move into my new apartment, cosidering the time crunch I was under it was a long shot I could find a place that I could settle in quickly without too much of a hassle so that I could get straight to business, but it all fell into place perfectly beginning with that first click.
Hitting people with the charge to exchange messages only after going through the whole rigamarole of setting up a profile. Not that i'd expect it to be a free service but that trick is shady.
Not accepting American Express but not indicating that ANYWHERE, just 'please enter a valid credit card number'
This site is a complete scam and waste of time. I contacted 5 different users who all started off seeming great and that they think I am the perfect match. They all wanted me to contact their "family lawyer" which you don't need for housing in the state of CA(my mom is a realitor and told me herself), and to send their "lawyer" money. Which each lawyer is a real person I can find on Facebook, and most of them were old cashiers or nobody's. And everytime I would ask to see the apartment before sending any money or signing a lease, they were all convienently "out of town" and wouldn't be back for weeks although they wanted me to move in the next few days? Each email would progessivly get more fake and automated. It's total BS. Also, I was never able to find the people who apparently sign up on Facebook on Facebook or any other social media site.
Only opt for 5 days@ 7.95 the 10@ 16.95 is not a better deal but would have given me more time to review the site now i will have to probably cancle in 5 days before really getting to experince the site for my rentals I have.
This site is at best over priced. At worse it is a bait & switch scam. I have personally found bait & switch ads (fake roommate ads) on Craigslist for this company. When you visit the site it seems like everything is free: "It is completely free to post rooms for rent, view other roommate profiles, and send messages to other roommates." What they leave out is that you can not read messages w/o paying. $5.95 for 3 days, $14.95 for 14 days, $29.95 for 30 days. This site is a joke. I did take the time to report the bait & switch ads to the BBB, Roomster.com's response was to play dumb. The website Roomshortlist.com also is used only to redirect to Roomster.com. Beware of any emails that are *******@roomshortlist.com.
Don't use roomster, there are free options that work much better. I initially signed up for a 5 day membership only intending to keep my account for 5 days. I just wanted to message some people about places I was interested in. Not a single one got back to me. All I got from roomster were places that weren't even in the right geographic location for where I was looking. 5 days later, after pretty much wishing I hadn't paid $7.95 for the 5 days they charged me another $24.95 for a reoccurring monthly membership. I tried to get a refund as I was no longer using the site and the site had failed me, but was not successful and was told all sales are final and that I had agreed to a monthly membership. This is a terrible site and is a scam. I personally had success with roomies.com but I'm sure there are other free options like roomies that will actually work... unlike roomster.
Do not use this "service". All of what you are reading here is true. They are as villianous and shady as any predatory financial lender you've ever heard of. You sign up for a temporary memebership, and are then socked with a $29.95 monthly membership a couple of weeks later. After pleading with customer service regarding my dire financial situation, I received a snarky email from a rep who relished letting me know I "agreed" to this subscription.
A lot of accounts in here are old and so a lot of people who were looking for rooms at one point in time are either no longer interested or already found a place. However, theyire acounts have not been deleted and so the true number of people looking for rooms is overstated.

As a former user of Roomster, I would strongly suggest that you do NOT join their service. They charge a nominal fee to use their most important tools (namely messaging other users)... which is an ethically dubious practice, considering that Roomster sells advertising on their site. Roomster will also surreptitiously CHARGE A SUBSCRIPTION FEE of approx. $30 without you knowing. Asking for a refund is a hassle; do yourself a favor and don't even sign up.
I appreciate the services of ROOMSTER. I have just found a Room from many of beautiful rooms on there. The customer representatives are very helpful of Roomster. It works for me, for all of this I want to give 5 stars to Roomster.
Not sure if/how I can connect with a potential tenant who as NOT paid up! Your service seems surprisingly free from the outset UNTIL we are inside it and learn that we then need to pay to read messages!
I registered with Roomster a few days ago to find a place to stay. Just after paying expensive fees and activating account, at least five scammers called or texted me. They claimed that they have rooms to rent, and then sent nice photos to show the beauty of their rooms. I knew that most of the photos were downloaded from real estate websites. But when I asked to see the houses, they made up lies that they were not in the town, if you really want the room, send their one month rental plus deposit and application fees. I said I have to look at the room first, and then send the money to you. They just randomly sent me a address and said that just driving by and seeing the outside of the house as there are no one in the house. If you don't like it, the money you sent to them is refundable.
But I must praise their staff who treat customers with care and patience and help solve problems promptly. Generally, Roomster isn't a right place for room hunters, because it can only bring you troubles and even money loss.

Answer: These are untrue statements. We have asked our many satisfied customers to post their positive experiences about Roomster to counteract the negative, and mostly untrue statements posted about us. If you notice that Sitejabber has negative reviews of almost every company doing business in the united states. If it was all true, there would be no business left and everyone would be out of work. People never write good reviews, people love to be negative. Its sad.
Answer: Hi Aminah, Roomster did not post that ad on Craigslist, we did not create that link and there fore we can not offer support for it. This looks to be one of our affiliates, who should not be doing this. We will be removing this person from our affiliate program. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Answer: That makes little to no sense. Undeleted? What does that even mean? N you want to create an account after you deleted it? Go ahead.

Roomster has been in business since 2003 and has helped millions of people find someplace to call home. We have worked hard to create the best site that we can and are always improving the user experience & building new and improved functionality. We charge a small fee for time usage on the site, and we think its pretty economical and fair. The money we charge keeps the servers running, the coders developing & and keeps the rest of Roomster's employees working hard for you!
Like any business that handles large volume of people, we have received some complaints, every company has. People get frustrated for all kinds of reasons, and we understand. It can be frustrating to look for a place to stay or renting out your place, especially when money is tight. We try to make everyone happy, but its not always possible. Sometimes without even contacting us, some people vent in the public forum.
A popular way to vent these days is taking to complaint/ripoff/scam board sites. These sites are privately run sites that feed off & profit from people's frustrations. In most cases post are made by nameless, faceless individuals, and are very negative in nature. We have been called a scam, that our listings are not real, members have said they can't cancel billing, or didn't know about purchasing a subscription. All kind of hurtful and untrue stuff has been said... and not just about us, but millions of good companies in the service industries. The goal of these complaint/ripoff/scam board sites is to have the companies hurt by the negative reviews to pay to remove the negative posts.
