The company has garnered significant criticism regarding its customer service and operational effectiveness. Common concerns include a lack of responsiveness from rescue organizations, frustrating website functionality, and perceived biases against quality breeders. Many customers reported unsuccessful attempts to adopt pets, often receiving no replies to their inquiries. While some users acknowledged the platform's role in facilitating pet adoption, the overarching sentiment reflects disappointment in the service's reliability and engagement. This feedback suggests a pressing need for improvements in communication, website usability, and support for both adopters and responsible breeders.

I have owned dogs and cats my whole life. I was just screamed at over the phone by one of the representatives of this agency. Her phone number is *******399. She fought with me over text message about my not giving my dog heartworm medicine, when he had an allergic reaction previously. After numerous uneducated jabs over text
Messaging she then accused me over the phone of buying drugs and alcohol instead of heartworm medicine! This is crazy! Do NOT rely on them for getting your dog adopted.
I was interested in a kitten to adopt.
I completed my paperwork and no one ever contacted me I kept emailing and calling and they told me there was a lot of interest in this particular. That was over 1 month ago. I went back on Petfinder today only to see the same kitten is still there for adoption.
I have great references even from my veterinarian so I don't know what their problem is. They prefer you rescue instead of purchase your pet but they don't do much to follow through.
I even left a voicemail message with Lost Paws who is fostering this kitten.
Still waiting.
I don't blame the website but then again I do. They need to work better at the credibility of their users. No one gets back to you and it's extremely difficult to adopt from this website. Also some shelter locations are wrong or missing. They claim to want adoptions but in reality probably have foster parents ignoring inquiries because they want to keep the pets for themselves. They don't respond to you when you show interest or even let you know they received it. Unprofessional people.
I lost my baby two months ago exactly, and it has been super hard on me. I didn't know it until she passed how much I relied on her for emotional support sometimes from the issues I have. That being said I want to adopt a new dog soon so I have been going to local shelters and looking on Petfinder.
Pros
It helps show you all the available dogs (and cats, etc.) near you
Easy to navigate and filter to what you are looking for
Gives backgrounds on the animals
Explains if the animals would be good around other animals/children
Cons
It is almost impossible to meet every single criteria they want
If you do make the criteria, the dog is probably already adopted, in the process, or on hold.
Some of them seem like scams - as I have seen the same dog photo on a few different listings with the same name
The range is small on a lot of them which is difficult when you live in the middle of nowhere.
The website doesn't ever work and after hours of trying to get it to work when it finally does, nobody will ever contact you back. Poor animals deserve a better website!
I originally started out searching for breeders for a yorkie and saw so many comments encouraging to adopt instead. So I decided to help out and adopt but what a nightmare it has been, I meet all the requirements of adoption. Fenced backyard, dog friendly neighborhood, dog parks nearby, experience with the yorkie breed, no one in my household under 13, single family home, etc. and still have been denied, told dog has been adopted, or received no response at all! No wonder there are so many pets for adoption. They are not helping them get adopted! I will go back to searching for a breeder! Thanks but no thanks!
Can't have a doggie door! Can't have an invincible fence! These folks do more damage to rescuing dogs than good. They are going to force people to have to go to breeders. It's asinine.
Looking to bring a dog into the family. We were guilted into the adoption of stray and rescue instead of buying from a breeder. Started to browse Petfinder. Problem is the search feature is lacking. Would be nice if it can filter out shelters/rescues that do not allow out of state adoptions. Also, there appears to be puppies mill masquerading as rescue. They have way too many puppies available and it seems every posting is a sob story. Does anyone know whether Petfinder screen these listers?
I have filled out several applications for three or four dogs. I even emailed. No response at all from anyone. Yet the dogs are still available on Petfinder. How do any of these animal ever get adopted if they dont call or respond back?
When I lost my fur friend I found a great empty space in my heart. I looked at all the dogs in need of a forever home on Pet Finder. You need to register at Pet Finder before you can get a response. But once you do, they will notify you when dogs you are seeking come available. I requested information on several dogs and within a few days got a response. You have to remember that most of these puppie-dogs are in a foster home with working people and be considerate of their time. The foster mom of the small puppie that I was most interested in let me know that she is not quite ready for adoption because she is not eating well and we made arrangements to see the puppie at a later time so that the puppie could decompress. I am quite pleased at the consideration that the foster mother has for the puppie. I know that when the puppie is ready for friends she will call me. I will let you know how it goes when I can get the puppie. I am very excited and hopeful that it will be a good fit.
I have attempted multiple time using multiple methods to inquire about recuse animals I wished to adopt. I received 0 returned emails, 0 phone calls answered, 0 return calls from messages left over multiple weeks. The website looks like the layout is nice but it is so painfully slow. I put up with it for weeks taking multiple hours doing what should have taken 1 or so. And then after all of my wasted time... they apparently don't even care about the pets listed. Great concept... terrible execution.
I started using Petfinder to find a rescue dog. Everyone that I inquired about I had to fill out applications. It was a waste of time because I never heard back from most of these places and the others had already been adopted out.
PetFinder's job is to show you what rescue organizations are in your area, and what animals those orgs have listed as available. THAT is their job. Not to get you the animal, or respond to your inquiries, or arrange your adoption, or anything else.
People coming on here and giving PetFinder negative marks for things that the adoption agencies are doing wrong are totally misplaced and confused. If you send an inquiry and get no response, that's on YOU to follow up with the ORGANIZATION not PetFinder. If you contact someone at a rescue and they're rude, that's the rescue's problem, not PetFinder's.
These negative reviewers don't seem to understand that they're getting mad at Facebook when their friend doesn't accept their request. It's not them, it's you.
I went to site cause i saw they had a beagle pug mix. Year old i wanted it so i filled out the application. I waited 3 months no reply i was suppose to get reply in a month. So i massaged them again 2 weeks no reply about the application. Then again i emailed them then i get a massage saying Our posting states a fence is required for Toby and you don't have one, therefore we can not approve the application. This is was not listed was requrminet 3 months ago. I had 2 husky dogs known needing a fence, but i trained them to stay in the yard which they did, i also had no problem with my lab. Anyway i did not like the lie i was told, the amount of time it took to reply, and the rude way they acted. Not everyone can afford a fence, nor should be excluded from adopting a dog because of it i have 2 arce yard plenty of room for the dog.
Very rude told to contact Carrie very rude snotty person leaves you hanging then answers questions rudely. Denied adoption for no known reason fenced in yard other pets good reference don't go on this site. Bad news
I have sent several inquiries on dogs, if you get a response its days later and the dog is adopted. If you have several applications on a dog it should show on his view page so people are not wasting there time and having hopes of adopting and then find out the dog is adopted days later. This petfinder is like playing the lottery, I think your better off just going to shelters and doing walk threws, by the time I find and adopt on petfinder Ill be in my 90s. Also I think some of the prices for adoption is ridiculous, Ive seen them on there up to $425, it sounds to me its not about finding homes for the animal, its about lining your pockets and taking advantage of people who just want a pet to love.
I was looking to get a dog as a service animal and wanted to rescue because I believe that every dog should have a loving, caring home. However, much to my dismay, I put in close to 20 applications and about 30 inquiries and I only got TWO responses- both of which told me the dog had been adopted. Otherwise it was radio silence from the shelters. I sent separate emails, called the places that had numbers listed, and waited for weeks with no response. They think nothing of asking you to fill out tediously long applications, but then they never get back to you. I finally gave up and bought a puppy from a breeder. I am seriously disappointed and will NEVER use PetFinder again. Horrible service, especially considering these dogs need RESCUING, you would think they would be motivated to place them in loving homes.
We sent for information on a little chi in Bridgewater nj When I sent them a second request they were rude and said they would not let her go we were to far away. 125 miles We adopted from Petfinder 8 years ago today From For Pete's Sake rescue they transported our pom who will be 9 yrs ols from Tenn 2 1/2 years ago we adopted 2 pommie girls from a breeder who could not breed one anymore she jus tuned 10 and another who was to small to breed They are all spayed we just love our furbabies. We tried for this little Joyce as she was the same size as the little 3pd chi we just lost 2 months ago who just missed his 14th birthday by 5 days. Maybe you people should check into some of these sites because as I see it tis a bunch of BS we are getting handed outOnly one replied but that little girl has been adopted All these furbabies need loving homes but the people that have do not care
I have inquired into at least 15 dogs and either they do not respond or they say they will get back to me and never do. For people who are supposed to be saving animals they sure dont seem like they are in much of a hurry to help. I get the feeling it is a sham.
Did a search on Petfinder for a pet within a 25mi radius of my zip code. Found a match, filled out the invasive 5 page application and endured the home inspection only to find out that the pet was being fostered out of state 100 miles away. This was never indicated on the posting. When I questioned owner of the rescue, she become defensive and abusive. I emailed Petfinder 3 times and none have been acknowledged. Waiting on a response from *******@Nestle/Purina who owns this "non-profit." I feel is was misled. Will not use this service again and advise others to adopt locally.
Answer: Not sure if Petfinders does this but AdoptaPet.com does.
Answer: They may be a legitimate site but they make it extremely difficult to use and arbitrarily refuse to allow you to use their platform. We started the process to list our foster rescues and it was so horrible that we looked up their reviews. We read many reviews of rescues that were taken down without warning or any reason. They use their staple response of: "We have determined that your group is not eligible for Petfinder membership at this time. Our Terms of Service state that eligibility for membership is determined at the sole discretion of Petfinder."
Answer: The only answer you will ever get is "contact the place/person you got the animal from or who has the animal". NOTHING ELSE.
