The company has garnered significant criticism regarding its customer service and operational effectiveness. Common concerns include a lack of responsiveness from rescue organizations, frustrating website functionality, and perceived biases against quality breeders. Many customers reported unsuccessful attempts to adopt pets, often receiving no replies to their inquiries. While some users acknowledged the platform's role in facilitating pet adoption, the overarching sentiment reflects disappointment in the service's reliability and engagement. This feedback suggests a pressing need for improvements in communication, website usability, and support for both adopters and responsible breeders.

Answered an ad and foolishly sent a $200 deposit. Drove 300 miles to pick up the puppy only to find the address belonged to someone else. The woman in the ad texted and wanted another $250 for vet bills but she would not meet in person. Filed a fraud charge with the local PD. Beware of Petfinders and associated scams.
I applied for a puppy and my application got denied because A.) I lack experience with dogs. B.) Because of distance. I can come to terms with A. But for B it seems to me you want more people to apply and Pay the application fee. KNOWING they will be denied for distance.
I have been on Petfinder for 2 months now. Applied for numerous cats. Many did not call back. Or by the time you send the app in its already gone. Or has been adopted and not taken off Petfinder. I have filled out so many applications. Had to give references on each one which when you fill out so many, should your friends have to keep answering questions from each place. Ridiculous! Then being told that most kittens have to be adopted together. I was told they need to be adopted together if younger than 6 months. Ridiculous... I adopted my cat at 5 months and he could not have been happier and was fully content and well cared for. The reason there are so many cats on these sites is that the people running them are not doing their jobs with helping to give cats the lives they deserve in good home. Such a terrible thing. Also when you see a kitten that is going to foster and you know you will want that one when it is ready to adopt. They say we cant do that. Yeah, I guess its too difficult to have someone say they want a certain cat, and all you would have to do is take down the name and call that person when that certain cat is ready. Then you wouldnt even have to put the adoption on line. Terrible terrible site... Totally broken system.
I've applied several times to adopt a dog - not one single reply or comment. Seems the dogs' listings were pulled down almost as quickly as they ever appeared. Were they actually real dogs? Not one single agency or shelter ever responded to my inquiries/emails/phone calls. It's no wonder people go to breeders.
Years ago I looked on Petfinder and was able to connect with the Rescue Organization and adopted the dog I saw on their website, but now in Year 2021 to 2022 I have filled in numerous applications for a dog and sometimes there's been no reply, and other times they claim the dog has already been adopted and another time one organization said they could give me some other dog that wasn't even the type of dog I was looking for. So in essence you are constantly strung along in hopes of getting a dog but you don't get one because there are 100 applications for the same dog.
A lot of it is just False Advertising and Bait & Switch methods which are actually illegal and PetFinder is obviously NOT doing anything about it. I have thrown in the towel and QUIT their bogus service for it only leads to CONTINUAL DISSAPOINTMENT!
In September I lost my Shih Tzu and desperately want another one. Put in applications for at least 7 dogs. Got glowing reviews from my vet and references too. Always the same response, dog was adopted. Starting to think this site is a scam. Even thought of age discrimination, as my mom would be home during the week with the dog, but after reading reviews, I think its Petfinder. Guess I'll try to save my money and BUY the dog I want, I'm done with these shelters.
Literally every dog application is like:
Do you have a fortified 10 acre property where the dog can roam freely but never have any chance of escape?
Are you white?
Are you between the ages of 35-40?
Will you stay home 24 hours and only give attention to this dog and no other humans or dogs or work or anything else?
Can you commit to training this dog to win the purina dog show gold medal and agree to life in prison if you don't win that medal next year?
This dog is EXTREMELY high energy. Will you take it on 46 walks a day at precisely 8 minute increments?
If you answer no to any of these questions then you're a terrible human and don't deserve to even look at dogs.
Be very careful about sending videos to people we are trying right now to get to Papillons from Deborah Smith and she continues to ask us for extra video of the inside of our house it's a little scary and I still can't adopt the Papillons
A young lady named Tonya Conrad is the worst. She is located in Michigan. We drive 2 hours to her house she had 2,2 week old black labs see picture below to pick from. My guy friend gave her a $400 deposit. The day we were picking up pup at 8 weeks. She texts and says she sold dog to some one else. After a few more texts she says dog was sick and died. She took our $400 and ran. Did not return our money. She is a school teacher poor example of a person. Please be careful using this site. Go to a reputable breeder. Do not buy from Tonya Conrad.
So i bought 2 rabbits on petfinder and on the picture of the 2 white rabbits they were tiny and when i got them they are huge. I paid 75 dollars for both of them and i would give this site a 5 star
My cat died of heart failure and I'm desperate for a companion. But over half the cats listed are bonded pairs but they make no mention of them in the initial description. It also have to repeatable send "introductions" to contact the fosters. There is also no easy way to remove individual cats from your saved lists.
We have tried to get a kitten or young cat from the foster homes that are on PetFinder, but the foster home's won't allow you to adopt a kitten or young cat, that has blue eyes, with out adopting another cat or two along with it. If the cat ‘ladies‘ don't want to give up the foster cats, then they shouldn't be on PetFinder. We are very disappointed, as the cat foster people have made it near to impossible for anyone to adopt a single cat!
How do people know what a feline wants!?!? Does a cat speak English? They don't! The foster families instill their will upon the vulnerable and are not willing to give up their cats unless you get another one with it!
Here's my issue with petfinders. I had an appointment to pick up a cat 4 and 1/2 hours away at animal kind in Hudson New York. I went all the way up there and they told me the cat was rehomed. Now my references were called and I got great references my appointment was made no problem until I got there and then they tried to get me to pick one of their other scraggly cats. I talked to the owner by email after calling petfinders that never called me back. And calling Purina. She promised to do good now it's been a week since I last heard from her and nothing. Imagine how upset you would be going home without the pet you thought you were getting. And then coming back to a house full of toys. Cat food etc. Not only am I not trusting petfinders right now I'm not trusting animal kind either. Since petfinders let them advertise without probably proper vetting then they are going to be in the lawsuit that I file against her if she doesn't make things right.
I have a 10 acre fenced in yard and the reason provided for not allowing me to adopt was that my fence, although higher than 4 feet, is not 6 feet high. What? I'm not sure what kind of scam these guys are running, but I suggest you go to BDRR.org or your local shelter. I wonder when the last time the pics on this site were updated. I have noticed that the only positive responses on this site are from people who have adopted anything but dogs. Horrible!
The website is simple to use, however it takes a very long time for anyone to get connected with you. I have been trying for a while now to adopt a cat and every single cat I've tried to adopt so far has been adopted before I even get the chance because nobody gets back to me in time. There's really no point in trying to adopt online, especially with this website. You're better off physically going to an adoption place.
Told to contact them after 10 business days if I have not heard from them. No way to get phone number to do so. Email contact does not work. Petfinder emailed me to tell me that the process was in process. Can't talk to anyone. Email to them doesn't work either.
Don't get your hopes up like i did, i wanted to adopt a puppy and i was perfectly qualified. First of all, they take weeks to respond but anyways they denied my application bc i didn't fill in all the references, (there are three, i was only able to fill in two) i thought it was ridiculous so i explained that i had enough money, a nice yard, etc since they found every excuse to try and deny my application. And it wasn't until i mentioned money they answered… they said i had to pay a $50 fee to get more information, then i realized this was a scam. Please don't waste your time.
After filling out a complete application and providing years of Vet records, the Petfinder 'volunteers' could never find the time to respond to multiple inquiries.
They are a waste of your time. After 3 months the dog we wished to adopt is still on their website.
If you can't find time to respond, then don't volunteer. You are ruining what could be a good organization's reputation by your laziness and lack of care.
I adopted a cat at Un Chat Ou Un Cheval Pour Un Enfant. I paid a fee of $275 and the cat was not vaccinated up to date nor had the vaccine anti-rabies, and seemed very poor domesticated. Dominique was strongly unprofessional, rude with serious behavior issues. She also didn't respect Covid pandemic precautions, she came in my house without a mask and touched pommels of my doors and was even impolite. I will never adopt anymore an animal at Un Chat Ou Un Cheval Pour Un Enfan. I strongly don't recommend them.
Answer: Not sure if Petfinders does this but AdoptaPet.com does.
Answer: Tried their services and only got requests to "sponsor" or donate for pets that may have been no-existent but no contact to actually adopt a pet
Answer: The only answer you will ever get is "contact the place/person you got the animal from or who has the animal". NOTHING ELSE.
