I have been scammed several times using offerup.
Once I saw a carbon fiber tripod which was worth around $300 selling for $50. So I contacted the guy and arranged to drive 80 miles in order to meet him. When I was about 5 mins away from meeting him I checked the listing again and he had changed the price to $150! Once we met I said the price was agreed at $50 but he said his girlfriend told him he was giving it away and it was worth way more so he wasn't willing to sell it for less than $150. He knew at this point I had driven 1.5 hours to meet him and I was invested in time and gas so I was forced to agree to the $150. I felt he had used a scam to get me there and then bait and switch.
Another time I bought a brand new never used Nikon brand camera battery for my professional camera that sold for $140 + tax retail. This lady said she had a never used one brand new with packaging for $35. She said she sold the camera that she bought it for so she couldn't test the batter but I figured it was worth the gamble so I went. I again drove around 1.5 hours to meet her and buy the battery with cash for the stated price. Upon returning home and trying the battery out it turned out to be dead and wouldn't charge. It looked brand new but had been sitting dormant for too many years and became unusable. I messaged the lady and told her the battery was no good but she didn't respond to the three texts I sent her and I wasn't about to spend $25 in gas and 3 hours of my time to go get a $35 refund.
It seems eBay is more trustworthy because you can always open a case if the seller doesn't take the item back if it is dead on arrival. And since you pay with PayPal you will automatically get a refund. This is not the case when you meet someone face to face and pay cash. I have learned my lesson.

OfferUp
September 14, 2020

I have been an active user on offerup since July of 2018. I have 535 reviews on its site. Yes there are people who "flake", but if you know how to post your item in a way that communicates your parameters well it makes things a lot easier. For myself I always include the city and cross streets in my post so that people can determine if it's too far for them or not. I think a lot of times people get excited because they see something they really like and jump on it so that they don't loose out on the chance to get it. Then once they realize it's too far for them to make the effort they just flake. I also include "first come first serve" and "no holds" in all my posts so that people understand that I'm only interested in serious buyers who are willing and able to pick up ASAP. It does help that I work from home, this app is definitely better used by people who are home most of the time and can set up times for people to pick up right away. I also make sure that all the most asked questions are in the post to weed out most of the annoying questions that the majority of people ask, like the height, length and depth of items like furniture. I specifically say if there is or isn't anything wrong with an item. The more detail you can add to your post the less questions you will get. I never give out my address until someone is actually on there way to drive to my house for pick up, this keeps me from feeling any kind of anxiety about having given out my address to people who just end up flaking. I kindly tell people who ask for my address before even setting up a time to meet(because they are trying to determine how far you are from them) hat he city and cross streets are in the post if they want to see how far I am from them and to send me a message when they are ready to drive to my house and that I will send them the address at that time, I always include a at the end of this sentence and at the end of all sentences that might could be misunderstood as rude or as me not giving them what they are asking for. This helps them to understand that your not being unkind your just communicating your boundaries. Once I learned how to do all here things it's been smooth sailing. Yes your still going to get people who ask a million questions, and who flake but if you are always kind to people and are the kind of person who can be patient with people it's a great way to get rid of your unwanted items quickly or resell things to make some extra cash. I have figured out how to use this app to make all my money at this point and enjoy it a lot. Another tip I have is to refer to the person as friend, people react to me calling them friend in a very positive way in messaging and helps interaction a lot smoother. Hopefully this will help some of you out. God bless my friends

No Customer Service
March 17, 2023

I've been on OfferUp (and LetGo before that) for some time now, and have successfully sold quite a few items to apparently satisfied buyers. I really enjoyed it and I had a bunch of 5-star reviews. About a year ago, OfferUp removed my listing for a shirt, citing that illegal items or items that encourage illegal activity aren't allowed. I totally understand their need to attempt to minimize illegal activity on their site. I figured I had inadvertently used some word or phrase that triggered some algorithm, so I inquired on their customer support (and I use that term generously) page. All I got was a scripted and canned response that said the same thing. The response said for more information, I could click on a link to, get this, the Consumer Product Safety Commission web site. Turns out the CPSC had no clue what was dangerous or illegal about my ad for a man's shirt. I emailed three times, asking what I had done wrong so that I wouldn't repeat my mistake, but each question resulted in the identical canned email response. I reposted the item where it remained unchallenged. Then, just a few weeks ago I listed a car for sale. Again, totally unknowingly I apparently said something egregious, and this time OfferUp deleted my entire account (along with about 30 items listed for sale) and told me I could not rejoin. Once again I pleaded for any specific information as to what was violative about my post, but just as before, all I got was the same canned email that told me nothing. To add insult to injury, I kept receiving emails ad nauseum from OfferUp entreating me to shop and purchase from their site (which, of course, I'm not allowed to do since they kicked me off). I would think most users would be grateful for guidance when they've posted an item that the software has flagged as dubious. I would have gladly corrected whatever apparently horrible mistake I made if I could've only gotten someone to tell me what it was. This makes no sense to me; I can't figure out why they wouldn't want to educate their users. There is no way I would've purposely posted anything "...illegal or that encourages illegal activity."
