Netspend is a scam
July 28, 2022

This is a fraudulent big scam company that must be shut down by the authorities. Purchased a Netspend Master card from Walmart, they cashed the money and never answered the phone to activate the card. We spent over 10 hours over 3 days trying to talk to them, they answered one time then they hunged up.
I am writing this on behalf of a none speaking English friend of mine who came to the US for a visit.

We're sorry to hear that our cardholder is having an issue with activating their card.

Like other financial companies that offer debit cards, we are required by our bank, as well as MasterCard and Visa associations, to be compliant with AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) laws. Both laws require that all financial institutions verify the identity of each account holder.

This means that we will ask for the name, US residential address, date of birth, and government ID number during the activation process. We may also ask to see a driver’s license or other identifying information.

We are happy to go over the options for accessing the funds on the card. Please email social@netspend.com.

Thank you,
Netspend

Would give 0 stars if I could. Walk into 7/11 on my 18th birthday to put money on one of your prepaid cards to buy some things online. Tried 3 times to activate the card through website and every time it told me something was wrong. I tried calling them 2 times the day of and was put on hold for 30 minutes, I gave up and now 2 days later I am writing this review while I've been on hold for 40 minutes so far. This company is horrible and does nothing to help you. They have over 500 1 star reviews on this website so no way they should even be allowed to be a company because I know so many people have had to put up with this same stuff and lost plenty of money. And I've read reviews and seen the company gives the same lame response to every person so I ask you to not do that to me and give your customers the help they deserve because this is ridiculous

Thieves
October 4, 2021

You provide ID when you open your account in person. Then, every time you log in online, they ask you to fill a question-by-question quiz to "verify your identity". Slip and double click "continue" or forget your parents' phone number from when you were a month old, and they'll lock your account. Their "fraud department" (which perpetrates fraud) claims you never provided the ID that you can't open an account at all without. They demand you email it, refuse to let you speak to a supervisor, and give you the run around. You'll probably never get your money back at this point. They're thieves, plain and simple.

We don't provide the option to activate our cards in person as we don't have any physical locations.

We're sorry to hear about the difficulty you are experiencing with the activation process. For assistance, please email social@netspend.com.

My deposit. 1561. 00
August 20, 2022

This card company put a hold on my deposit for an old card from Jan. I called right away on Friday to resolve it. I had no idea. I was told one day it would be resolved. Past one day, I missed my hours and pay at my job today due to no gas to drive over an hour. Some representatives have been very short and rude... this f... card needs shut down. After my experience I'm going to do everything possible to shut it down with others. Horrible experience, still don't have my deposit I worked for.

Absolutely avoid
June 18, 2021

Absolutely avoid. I saw this card in a store and I liked the idea of how a convenient debit card. When I read the fine lines, I noticed there are high fees for lots of common actions, and the account is very inconvenient, it takes time to move money, and it's not compatible with google pay and other more convenient forms of payment.

So I researched for better options online and found Chime. So I went ahead and closed my NetSpend account. I was due a $50 refund for my initial deposit. They sent me a check in the mail that took very long to arrive and discounted $6 for "delivery". The check says explicitly "not eligible for mobile deposit", making it extremely inconvenient.

And when I noticed, it also expired and now they just won't give me any of the $50 they owe me.

Overall, I wish stores like Walmart and CVS wouldn't offer them so visibly, knowing now just how bad of a deal they are.

This is totally on them get your money out. They allowed the hacker to change my PW and phone number. They knew when my deposit hit, how much was left after their attack on me. Poor Business and practices. IC3 filed with the FBI

December 28, 2023

They will not activate my son's card after numerous attempts. Now they want documentation of a social security card, proof of address, and 3 months worth of utility bills. It's all over seas, they will take your identity! I really hope this corporation gets shutdown.

Hacked
January 2, 2024

Recently on 12/25/23 my card was somehow hacked, account drained, and netspend has been no help. They tell you to file a dispute which can take anywhere from 10 to 90 days and in the meantime you are out your funds. They do not do like traditional banks and credit your account.

Buyer beware! This company will require you to jump through hoops to get a card and enable it to receive direct deposits! Then even after you complete all their requirements on time they STILL reject your deposit send it back to the sender and you have to wait 2 more weeks to receive your money! If I could give 0 stars I would!

Do not waste your money! This company should be turned into the better business bureau the card is registered before we even opened the packet. Then we tried to activate and our name didn't match. Essentially - their way of stealing your money! Literally was told we have "forfeited" our funds to their financial institution.

Netspend has no one that works for them worth a damn. Nobody has the same information and had got to be the rudest people I've ever dealt with. They activated my card incorrectly so it's useless and now they want me to wait to get my money back. Did they wait when I purchased their service... No! Neither will I. I give them a zero hands down no question. It made me click at least one star. THEY DONT DESERVE IT!

My elderly father has an account with this company and recently lost his card and requested a replacement for a $25 expedited fee and the card never arrived. The fee was supposed have to card sent in 1-3 business days back in June. Since then my father has been hospitalized and each time he calls and tries to inquire about his account they ask him a series of questions that i know he doesn't know the answer to as he has early onset dementia and when you provide his social security number they now say the account doesn't exist. My father's monthly social security benefits are applied to this card and for the last two months he (we) have not been able to access his money to pay his bills like rent, which means i have been paying the bills. We've recently had to enlist the help of an attorney. NetSpend should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage of unsuspecting people like my father.

I put $100.00 and then another $40.00 on a NetSpend card and now they won't respond to me via phone, text or email. I guess they think they can just keep my money and I won't do anything about it. I don't care how much I have to spend hiring a lawyer, I'm not going to let them get away with this.

My husband's account was locked, then closed over a false "fraud" load on his card... a whole $420. Called Netspend only to spend 4 hours on the phone getting the run around and a lot of "it's their fault, not ours" bull$#*!! My husband's ID and SS are now flagged as "high risk " and we didn't do a damn thing wrong! Contacting and filing complaints with the FTC, the BBB, and Wyoming Attorney General, consumer division. Highly Pissed off at being ripped off of our rent money!

I tried to deposit my check from a life insurance company and was told it was refused because it is over $2,000 dollars! Yet, everything l read on the internet says their limit is $5,000!
