I booked a van 5 days ago, they charged me £100 and confirmed the van would be delivered here tonight (Friday) at 5.45pm and collected tomorrow before 12. At 5pm tonight (45mins before delivery), they call me saying they cant deliver and are cancelling my booking. Its Friday night - everything is now closed and I have to help a friend move house tonight! Their attitude was disgraceful... they couldn't care. They sent an email stating nothing has been charged to my credit card, but they took the money 5 days ago! I'm furious! No managers to speak to because they have all gone home. NEVER USE THEM!
The van was delivered with no contact at all with the driver and when collected they were late and we had to leave keys for driver. In January they took money for fuel, they have said the tank was full when it left the depot. There is no way it would use £28.00 to travel from the depot to our address. They are just a rip off company.
DO NOT USE THEM EVEN IF THEY WERE THE ONLY COMPANY OUT THERE
Since my original review I have been contacted by Marcell, who said I would be repaid my money taken by me, in my opinion incorrectly, apologised and that this would be sorted, well I am still waiting for the money,,,, it seems that manager of the depot is really in charge and if they want to steal from you they will. It is not always cut and dried in their position as a customer facing manager but if you do not have the power to do what you say don't say anything,,, again I advise no one to use this service in the Cambridge area.
I wish I had checked the reviews for this company prior to hiring a van from them. Like so many of the reviews for this company ( company of thieves) they took money from my account for fuel despite the vehicle being returned with a full tank. The van was also two hours late and was quite smelly and dirty but due to time was unable to do anything about this and had to just put up with it.
Marcel in customer services must be kept very busy dealing with all the complaints this company receive. I wonder if she enjoys her job. Maybe she gets a bonus from all the money that gets fraudulently taken from honest customers accounts. They have to be the WORST hire company ever. PLEASE DO NOT USE UNLESS YOU DON'T MIND MONEY BEING STOLEN FROM YOUR ACCOUNT.
Don't use this companyNationwide hire or GoRentals
My partner used this company nationwide hire for a van to take to Spain. They used GoRentals to hire to my partner.
Van was delivered on the day. Partner went off to Spain. Came back and Parked Van on drive it had an alarm on and mobilizer. Got up next morning van had gone.
Phoned GoRentals 9am to see if they had picked van up early and they said they were not sure but would get back to us. We informed them we still had the keys.
No phone back. One of their men cam e at 5 pm for keys and asked if they located van he said yes.
This was end end of March.
We went away for the Easter and came back and received recorded delivery letter from GoRentals stating Van had been stolen and they took 2,350.00 out of my partner account. Disgusting!
Phoned Nationwide hire and they informed us they knew nothing about it. They would contact GoRentals and get back to us.
No reply had to keep chasing them. They then informed my partner it had nothing to do with them as it was a thief of a vehicle and we would have to contact GORentals ourselves.
Our contract was with them and they contract is with GoRentals. Disgusting.
Eventually got in contact with GoRentals and they said they informed Nationwide hire but we informed them Nationwide knew nothing about it.
We never received any information, no police contact etc.
We were informed they located van and the only damage where they hot wired van.
We are surprised as van has alarm, no window was broke so how did they get into it. And we have been charged 2,350.00 we have seen no police report.
I think this is a scam with these two companies.
Don't use them.
We will be contacting police for thief of money from our account.
And will be def taking this further.
Our contract is with Nationwide hire
GoRentals should of taken money out of Nationwide hire account not ours as they have contract with them.
Any advice from anyone. A solicitor would be great to get advice from too.
Thank you for your time
NationwidehireUK are a broker; a go between, or buffer between the customer and the Third party ie hire company. They act as an interface; protecting the Third party and allowing shoddy service for premium prices. Its all in the Terms and Conditions. Bad practice, and brings a bad name to internet companies.
Was overcharged by £350 over a dispute that wasn't our fault! Nobody came to collect keys yet they say they did just so they can add on extra days. Appalling customer service and rude staff
This is my second bad review. 6 weeks after hiring a van through Nationwide, they have gone and deducted ANOTHER £35 from my bank account. I phoned to query this, but they had no explanation as to why they'd taken further money. They promised to refund it and of course they didn't. I'm now having to open a case directly with my bank to investigate these crooks for taking unauthorised money. At first they didn't refund my deposit, I had to chase 7 times. Then they didn't refund the full amount, and kept changing their minds as to the reason. And now they've gone and taken more money weeks after returning the van. I can't get my head around how illegally this company operates. This is turning into the most expensive van I've ever hired. Seriously, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. They are rip off merchants, they charged us three times three months after the hire. No correspondence about why, multiple phone calls and refused help. Told would be called back and wasn't 5 separate time. They are an absolute joke.
Hired a van to move 400 miles. All ok but one month after hire I had a £50 charge on my credit card. No notification of what for! I contacted them and was told it would be investigated and I'd be called back. No call back but an e-mail advising was a fuel charge. I had left the van 7/8th full as it was when I received it. Even if I was meant to leave full, 1/8th does not equal £50. Disputed charge as directed. No response. Made a formal complaint. Complaint was acknowledged but no response in 21 days as advised. When I chased it I got a reply saying Nationwide Hire are just brokers and the branch who supplied the van made the charge and it will not be refunded. When asked what branch was used they say they have no record. They have incorrectly charged me for fuel and are not doing anything about it. Complaint has gone to the consumer ombudsman today!
They are an agency, they cannot guarantee a vehicle will be available and will just drop you and leave you high and dry. It is not an honest position and they have no regard for their customers whatever. They cancelled our hire while we were on our way to London to collect a kitchen, and we live in Cornwall so a ten hour round trip. We should have read some of these reviews and then we would not have made this mistake.
Possibly the worst vehicle hire experience of my life, and I have hired some vans in my time. In short booked a van online - spoke to someone in their office all ok! Come the day no van - text from nationwide after the vehicle was supposed to moving one house to another. They Text me (didn't even have the courage to ring me) an hour before the van was supposed to be delivered. I wish I had read the reviews first - I am rather skeptical about some of the reviews on here as well showing five stars, after reading them they are a bit unbelievable and the English seems a little suspicious.
Wanted a Luton van to do a house move from south east England to Central Scotland and needed this capacity of van for the load to be moved. I booked the van a week in advance with the full fee taken up front. I asked for a confirmation note twice but never got any - at this point I should have been suspicious, but never expected a problem from such a large organisation.
The van was due to be delivered at 0900 on a Wednesday morning but I received a text at 1610 on Tuesday afternoon telling me that they could not supply the van and offered a choice of smaller vans - useless as I would have booked a smaller van if I had wanted one. I phoned immediately to complain but was told the previous hire had extended the van loan and it was not now available.
When I queried that this should be the previous hire's problem and that if I had booked a double room in a hotel then a single room would not do and if the previous occupant wanted to stay then he would be the one to be offered alternatives. I was then told they couldn't get the van back as it was abroad! The next offer I got was that they would phone around other leases that they knew of, but as it was now near closing time this would take at least 4 hours to confirm so it would not be until 1100 the following morning that I would hear anything. Within 1/2 hour I got another text (not even the courtesy of speaking directly to someone) telling me that there was no availability for the next day and that the booking was cancelled!
This left us high and dry having to get out of the house but with no means to do so. After a great deal of scrambling about the internet we had to hire a removal company to do the move at short notice and at increased cost, also an extra nights cost of accommodation at a b&b as obviously the move could not take place the following day.
All in all they don't seem to realise/care about the implications of their failure to supply a service at the very last minute. A harsh lesson to check review sites before using any service as this would have given me an indication of what I was letting myself in for.
I booked a Luton van on Wednesday intending to move from Glasgow to Cardiff on Saturday morning that's 3 days in advance and paid the full amount. Was told the van will be delivered Saturday morning but it wasn't delivered. I phoned 30 mins before the time which e van wasn't supposed to be delivered just to check and someone promised to call back but they dint. I phoned when after the time which e van was supposed to be delivered and I was told that there was no van available untill Monday. The lady wasn't apologetic at all instead she was very rude and cut off the phone.
Hired a MPV for holiday use. I checked with the head office twice before the vehicle was due for delivery, once a week in advance and the day before. I was told that there were no worries, everything was in order etc etc. Guess what? The time for the contract to start passed - no MPV - I phoned - "I'll phone straight back and give you an ETA."
There was no call back, so I phoned an hour later and spoke to someone different. "I'll get on to this straight away sir and phone you back." Another hour passes - I call back and state that unless the van arrives within two hours my travel plans will be put a risk.
Finally a call comes to state that the vehicle has been involved in an accident on the way to me. I ask at what stage they were thinking of letting me know - no answer - no substitute vehicle available and the family holidays in tatters - this was clear breach of contract and the "vehicle involved in accident" explanation is questionable at least,
I first wrote a review about my bad experience with Nationwide in July, briefly, hired a van for removal for 8:30 am through Marcelle in customer services, invoice *******, she booked it and confirmed... it didn't turn up... phoned Marcelle and complained as I had also hired 3 men for a full days work costing £280... lots of excuses and guaranteed van to arrive by latest 11:30 am. waited until 1:30 then had to give up as the job was going to take at least 6-7 hours and men hired couldn't stay any longer but still had to pay them. Nationwide have refused to accept ANY responsibility for my financial losses... what's more I asked Marcelle in customer services to pass my complaint on to managing director for her comments and am going to copy and paste her disgusting unprofessional reply... it is obvious I wasn't meant to be copied in on this but displays another side to their incompetence as a company. Was waiting for an apology after I let her know I had received this but none has been sent hence the reason I am posting this second review... the following is an exact copy of the email from 'managing director'...
My company would have fired me on the spot for this...
I also have a transcript from Amy on the chat line when asking about guarantees for van delivery... she states 'after confirmation delivery times are set in stone'... not so.
Do not use this 'company'... you will have NO recourse if things go wrong...
Will continue to post here and other sites until I have satisfaction from them re my case.
You have to rate from 1 -5 stars, I have HAD to rate 1 star, but if I had the choice would be NO stars.

I rented a van from Nationwide Hire. The rental all went fine, but after the van was collected I was hit by a £166 fuel charge. This is ridiculous because:
- I fully topped up the tank at the end of the hire, driving only 7 miles after filling it
- The charge is over twice the price of a full tank
I knew nothing of the charge until I spotted it on my credit card and queried it, if I didn't check my statement so carefully I would never have known. I submitted a dispute, with evidence of the fuel purchased. After 11 days with no response I chased it up only to be told I'd have to wait 28 working days. After 28 working days, still no response or refund.
Furthermore, I was supplied with a van smaller than I ordered or paid for. I was informed of this too late to book with another company, and I never received the promised refund to compensate for the smaller van.
I WILL NEVER USE THIS COMPANY AGAIN.
Do not use them.
The booking process was simple, van turned up on time.
They then left us with the van for 6 DAYS after we off hired it, that's 6 days we had to store this huge vehicle somewhere.
They then charged us £600 for a chip in the windscreen, without so much of a mention, only realised when we checked the credit card statement.
After a long argument they refunded part of it but charged us for a chip repair and a £60 ADMIN FEE! Even though we stored their vehicle for 6 DAYS!
Nowhere in their terms does it state any of this and their customer service manager is rude and vague.
DO NOT USE
We used nationwide to hire a car to travel around the uk during our visit. They were very helpful and we will be sure to use again when we visit next year.
Thanks kate for the work done
My hubby and I just returned from a much enjoyed, memorable tour around Europe with our children and some friends. We love to drive and needed a larger vehicle to fit everyone which is why we chose to get a minibus from Nationwide. Everything was great.
Answer: I have had dealings with Marcelle too. Refuses to answer emails and never returns calls - disgraceful
