“May Day 2023 Hotwire Scam and Fraud”

Mike f.
5/1/23

Be Aware of the following fraud perpetrated by Hotwire: I purchased a hotel stay with hotwire based upon the hotel's location as promised by Hotwire's map. After I committed to their promise, they sold me a hotel outside of their mapped region. Then, I was told absolutely no refunds.

“Frustrating and demeaning customer service experience”

I could not add a booster seat to my car rental reservation through Hotwire for December 23,2023. The following directions to add amenities on their website are inaccurate; "please call the car rental agency at the number shown on your confirmation before the scheduled pick-up date to check availability." When I phoned Alamo Car Rental, the agent told me to call Hotwire. When I phoned Hotwire, the agent told me to call Alamo. Finally, after being transferred to three different Hotwire customer service representatives, the agent told me to request a booster seat at car pick-up and that there may be fees associated with the item. There will be fees, but my concern is that a booster seat may not be available to rent on one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, whereas reserving a booster in advance would have given me cause to expect to have one waiting as part of my reservation. Hotwire should have an online method to book or request amenities during the car rental. This option would give the customer peace of mind during a stressful time. If I can pick up a booster seat at the Alamo desk on December 23, my 2-star rating stands. If not, I'll be back on sitejabber after Christmas with a 1-star rating only because 0 stars isn't an option. Hotwire Itinerary #*******449

The people were really nice and it was a very easy and smoothe check in, but when we got to our room we immediately got the smell of mold. The shower is disguising and it took multiple people in our party to try and turn it off. The top bedding blanket smelled like it's never been washed. We heard loud blasting music from 10 pm-2- am. do not recommend this hotel. The people were very friendly and sweet though!

Completely useless writing this cause nobody cares but will write it anyway not a great site they put bad hotels under higher ratings probably to get that particular hotel more money… i keep wanting to look at 3.5 stars or higher and you see what hotels you might be getting but they'll but a dump of a hotel like say the wingate in a list with Westin, Hilton(dump), and say embassy suites for say 110 per night with a total of 140 with taxes and fees they you pay, YOU do not get to pick, and they will give you the least impressive hotel every damn time! Or say the last time i stay at a hotel stay in hotels for a living so i know, I'll put airport shuttle under what i need and i get a hotel that doesn't even have a shuttle! Won't use them again

Will never use Hotwire again. Car rental agency isn't shown until after booking is confirmed. Our car rental iMacs looked like a hole in the wall, and customer service was awful. Our rental car was infested with ants, but we didn't know it till after we drove away. Lots of hidden fees. Will not rent from Hotwire again.

Had some good deals, but mostly bad deals with some really shady hotels that we ended up not even using. Customer service is worse. When you get a room that says one thing but ends up being another, you're supposed to get a new room or refund. Nope. The hotel can deny your refund if they want. Never again. I use Expedia now, and the customer service is way better.

I encountered being disrespected by giving me extra room next the laundry room. Not ready always far from everyone. This happened anytime I booked through hotwire. I need to know if I am the only one filling this way.

Please Hotwire, do not use Sixt rental car as a vendor anymore! They just give HOTWIRE a very bad name. Do not associate with them. They do not allow you to reschedule OR give you a refund if you have to cancel.

They bring HOTWIRE'S reputation down, very low!

Left us stranded in las Vegas
We flew in from new Orleans to Las Vegas on 10/18/19. We booked our rental car through hotwire. We landed around 1115pm according to the rental car customer service ace rental car closed for 1130pm so we knew we couldn't make it due to we had to take 2 shuttles to get to the car rental location. We called hot wire to explain what time we got In and we were assured that ace had to hold our rental for 24hrs so we lyft to our resort. We made it to ace rental 7am and was told by the front desk lady that they didn't have a car for us and our time had expired she said we had 12 hrs after reservation which we didn't understand because we made it there before the time. We called hotwire and got LARRY the customer service rep. He then spoke with the agent at ace rental car which he and the lady got into a argument due to they have a agreement with the rental car companies to hold the cars for 24hrs and they were not honoring it. At the end hotwire gave me a refund but did not put me in another car comparable in price everything was higher due to we had to get a car the same day. Hotwire would pick up the difference for this big inconvenience so basically they left me stranded in Las vegas with no car. I will never book through them again

Yes, hotwire has many great deals on hotels, especially in large cities. However, when you get the secret hotel rate, their idea of 4-5 stars is not what you might think. Another thing is that, be prepared to be discarded in value to the hotel booking desk, never helped via phone for issues with your room and the hotel, and be prepared to be given the crappiest hotel room possible if not the broom closet.
If you don't mind staying in the broken air conditioner room, have the hotel desk tell you "sorry, you booked with hotwire and you will need them to help you" or the room that is under construction, then go right ahead, you will save 25-50 dollars on average compared to other sites that offer a discount.
We learned our lesson many times and do not use them anymore because of how you are treated as a hotwire customer at a major hotel and the types of rooms they give you for saving 35.00

Booked a car with HotWire for $163.18. When I returned the car, Advantage told me the charge was $144.66. HotWire won't refund the difference. Will only give me "Hot Dollars" to use on my next booking with them. Doesn't make me want to use them again.

I recently booked a Hot Rate Car Rental which I cancelled given the Covid travel advisory from the CDC. I contacted Hot Wire and questioned if they were making exceptions to the no refund policy in light of the Pandemic. Since I'd prepaid for the rental I questioned if I could get a credit voucher for use at a later safe time. I was advised that they were not making any exceptions and I would not be issued a credit voucher for later use.
OMG... I truly wanted to travel but thought better of it after seeing repeated travel advisories and watching Dr. Fauci. I sincerely felt that my husband and I were doing the right thing given WE ARE ALL IN THIS COVID PREVENTION EFFORT TOGETHER!
It's SAD that Hot Wire was not a good corporate citizen and opted NOT to make an exception during these very EXCEPTIONAL TIMES!

I've used Hotwire, enthusiastically, for years upon years, loving their blind website, which is the only reason I use them. I am having a serious operation and have to be at the hospital early, and needed a hotel nearby. I know how to find the areas in the blind site, so I know the area in which the hotel will be, what rating it is, how many recommend it. Always like that. But either on the side of Hotwire or myself, I was booked in the wrong neighborhood. When I called 4 seconds later to cancel and rebook, Hotwire said no way. We will refund 1/8th of it, and charge you $100 cancellation fee. A year earlier, this happened, and Hotwire's customer rep was able to change it for me; they got their $$ and I was a satisfied customer. No longer. Today, I spoke with the "manager," and she refused to help me. I told her my circumstance, I told her about last year. No go. Policy first, customer satisfaction, um, last. They lost me as a customer.

We have used hotwire often with great success in the past, but I was shocked to discover that they misrepresent what kind of bed you'll be receiving and offer negligible compensation to travelers inconvenienced by this.

In making a reservation if you think you have a "guaranteed bed type"- Look again - on the same page that they say "Your bed type is guaranteed" they also say " bed types may vary" you will continue to receive notice that you have a guaranteed bed type but you do not.

If this is important to you, do not use Hotwire,

If you're traveling with small children- do not use Hotwire-

If you intend to sleep with your spouse (on something other than a full or queen size bed)-do not use Hotwire.

Please see below:

Below is an example of the selection you -a customer would make:
You check your bed type and pay for the "guarantee".

Hotwire.com is a great way to pick up sweet deals on hotels, but has a bad history in meeting the accommodation requirements that it's customers sign up for. Sources at hotels recount that many customers who previously stated on hotwire.com that they require 2 beds are only provided with a single bed room upon arrival. This lack of attention to detail by hotwire.com creates stressful mix-ups at inconvenient times during already high-anxiety trips.

Hotwire.com has a good premise but it needs to improve upon it's booking system and customer service before I would recommend booking with them.

Stay Away from Hotwire, they are in the business of fraud. Don't bother trying their customer service for it is in the philipines, and the people just read off a pre-written statement. When looking at their star ratings you need to automatically take off one star in order to compare to other website ratings. The price structure they use is based on the highest price that chain charges, it is not what that hotel actually charges, so your hot rate deal of 40% to 50% off or more is actually a savings of usually 5 dollars. So for possibly a $5 savings you can't change the reservation, get a refund, know anything about the hotel or property. Higher end hotels typically give you the cheapest room they have, and give you a pull out sofa to accommodate more than two guests. The chances you take with hotwire will ruin your trip and steal your money, just stay away.

It used to be you can see who the merchant is for the last minute deals. Now, not always. They only mention the neighbourhood.

I used to be able to find great last minute hotel and car rental deals that were much more attractive than the bookings I made months in advance. Now, I find if I use a non-last minute site such as Travelocity and Expedia, I get the same deals.

All my last 3 hotel reservations were mistaken.
Once we got one room instead of 2.
Once we had to pay to the hotel for the third person.
The customer service was very bad.
Instead of solving the problem they holdede me on the line for maybe 30 minutes.
Thats a very low service level.
Dont recommend at all.

I booked a hotel with Hotwire for this past NewYears. Showed up early to get booked into our room to find out Hotwire did not book is a room and the hotel was not affiliated with Hotwire anymore. We were left in Toronto on NewYears to find our own hotel. We were on the phone with Hotwire for a total of 5 hours seeking assistance on a new room and was never assisted as we were transferred a total of 6 times. We were lucky to find a hotel on our own or we would have had to sleep in the car and we were forced to pay double the price for a room which wasn't too pleasant. Hotwire took forever to refund my funny as they fraudulently charged my credit card to a hotel they did not book me a room. Finally received my money back and they assured me I would be receiving a refund on the extra money I had to pay for a hotel due to their mistake and it was been over a month and a half not and have not seen the money. I email them and every time they tell me an extra 10 business to tack on as they are slowing the process. They have awful customer service and would never boon with them ever again.

My experience with hotwire was great when I was in Canada, when I moved to Germany, the website is really a problem for your journey instead of being a facilitator or solution. First, Hotwire overrate the hotels, instead of being 3 stars, they rate it 4 stars. I booked a hotel that was described as "elegant hotel" and 4 stars, and when I got the hotel name, I found it was a piece of garbage, and worth not more than 2 stars. I called Hotwire and they said it was rated by Expedia and we follow their rate (their partner).
The second issue, I found the hotel way cheaper on booking and even the hotel website.
Ok, Hotwire was not bad when it comes to America and Canada, but it sucks in Europe

I used to love Hotwire, which I have used only to book hotels, but two unfortunate experiences with Hotwire's customer service has me looking for other discount sites. Latest. Somehow the CAD denomination was showing above the hotel prices. I booked before it really registered that I, with a US credit card, US address, and US destination, was going to have to pay in Canadian dollars. I called immediately. Experienced long holds and not-even-marginally-friendly customer service rep. Be very careful when you book. NOTHING can be changed, including the currency in which you are paying. Oh yes, they do say this on the site. And the rep did say, "Sorry."

So I booked a hotel for a great deal. But the problem is that the room is always the hotels standard or lower room for two people. If you have 4 people and need two beds, you don't have a choose of that. And most hotels will only let one rollaway in a room and will charge for it. It's not the hotels fault. You need to read the fine print with hospice. Sure you get a $200 room for $89. But you don't get to pick the room, no matter how many people or request you put on the reservation. The hotel gets a reservation from hitting for 1room only and the hotel can pick what room to give you. If you need a double or want a suite or special things then don't book on hotwire. It's such a headache. And if the hotel is booked they still put your reservation through as if it isn't. But they don't tell you that the hotel is booked. They are horrible. They screwed up my reservation 3time now. Would not use them unless I wanted a headache.

NEVER AGAIN WILL HOT WIRE GET A CENT OF MY MONEY! Here's why... I found a much better place to book vacations through a company called wake up now. I get at least 66% off on vacations up to 95%. Plus hot wire had several "service" and hidden fees that I was unaware of and wasn't told up front. The customer service over the phone was nasty and rude, like I had done something to the woman. Smh never again though!
