HomeAdvisor (Powered by Angi) Reviews Summary

The company exhibits a mixed reputation, with notable strengths in customer satisfaction when it comes to specific contractors and service providers, who are often praised for professionalism and quality work. However, significant concerns arise regarding the lead generation service, with numerous customers expressing frustration over poor-quality leads, lack of refunds for invalid contacts, and overwhelming solicitations. Many reviews indicate a decline in service quality following the merger with Angie's List, leading to a perception of the company as unreliable. Overall, while individual service experiences can be positive, systemic issues with lead handling and customer support remain prevalent.

I contracted for a "fixed cost" repair that was anything but. There is enough fine print to plaster a Mac semi trailer and all of it designed to charge you more. I prepaid for a fence repair through Home Advisor. The "contracted" repair person did not show up on time, made two trip to do a 2 hour job and and then wanted to charge me for materials and "additional time". These are not "pros" by any stretch of the definition. First Home Advisor told me that I did not owe additional monies, then, that I did.
In the meantime the contractor, who thanks to Home Advisor knows my telephone number, address and e mail is threatening me! All that you get out of Home Advisors customer service are platitudes, " We can understand" when clearly they don't and can't. I ended up paying $45.00 more for the job just so I would never have to talk to them again.

When I signed up I thought I was going to receive quality leads. My company was new at the time and I needed customers. After $600 spent only 1 lead was a real person. I ended up wasting a bunch of money that they claimed they would refund but never did.

Worst company I have ever dealt with. After cancelling there service for a terrible return on my investment they continue to call and harass me. They have called me at 7:00 pm at night, they have called me on my cell phone. They have called me after asking them to take me off there calling list multiple times. Beware they are worst company I have ever used!

Home in visor emptied my prepaid credit card account without my authorization and will not return the money. When call to request the money back and they said tough luck pretty much. I talk to person after person even threatened to go to the Better Business Bureau everyone's attitude was there is not a magic button to fix this that I would have to be more careful in the future. I would stay clear from home and visor they are thieves.

Run! FAST!
March 3, 2020

Forcing "leads" on you and charging your credit card on a recorded line. If they are recording you should hang up.

Giving me a list of my competitors is not appreciated, I know who they are. Giving me leads in 30 story apartments is not useful, I need property owners. Couldn't refund because older then 30 days.

Seems like elderly, lonely people looking to talk to someone. Most don't remember contacting home adviser. Might as well be a cold call.

I payed for a man to replace an existing door with a new one I already bought. They said it would take 3 hours
He showed up late left after nine at night and the job is still incomplete. The home advisor people will not reimburse me for my time and the damages. The new door is not able to close properly and the sunlight can now be seen between the frame and door. This is so unprofessional and a complete mess. Never trust a home advisor professional/contractor

Will not give you a straight answer about how much they're gonna charge you if you are contracter. I have gone back-and-forth with them trying to find out how much it cost I guess to some type of sliding scale That they don't want to discuss.

I co-own a small cleaning company and we were looking to get expand and get some bigger janitorial contracts. After paying for the $300 sign up the POC became very hard to get ahold of. With only the briefest sales pitch explanation to go on, it was implied we'd only be charged for the leads we interacted with. Unable to get ahold of anyone for a tutorial we just went into the app and turned leads off as we weren't really desperate for work and were really only wanting minimal quality bigger lead contacts as we're two people; which we stated multiple times. The leads still came through. Mostly they were one time residential cleaning junk leads and we never recieved one Janitorial lead. But whatever we didn't interact with them. Suddenly, money starts being automatically withdrawn from our account wether the leads were turned on or off. At this point, it's about $500 that's been withdrawn in a month, while we only interacted with 1 lead that didn't even call us back. We have gotten ZERO business from this $800 investment.

Finally, got the POC on the phone and he assured us he'd refund the money and we'd start over with a lower lead preference and the knowledge that EVERY LEAD they send you, you will be charged (which of course he explains then) Two days later were informed via email we'll be given a $200 credit. To which we said "No thanks, we'd like a refund and we'd like to cancel services." Apparently, this has to be done by another person who was going to call within 48 hours. No such call has been received after a week. Have continued to inquire about the refund by email; no response.

I have used Home Advisor a few times but am continually frustrated with the fact that you have to put all of your information in without just being able to peruse all of the choices for consideration. After asking for contractors, you are bombarded with phone calls, some from some pretty aggressive people. I don't want my information on the site unless I give it to a contractor that I have personally chosen from the site and whom I have personally contacted. I don't need, especially my address, online with people I don't know and haven't vetted. Angies List is also doing this kind of service now and I will no longer use them. Please change this form of contact and allow the consumer to have anonymous contact the way it used to be. Your process only leads to personal frustration and a sense of pressure from vendors. Thank you.

I worked as a contractor for a little over two years for these guys, and the hidden agenda of fees and dues overall is what caused me to leave.
First, to start, you have to pay almost $300 for the year, as a contractor for H. A. Secondly, any leads' you receive from them, whether they're duds (wrong phone number with no answer), or just someone who doesn't want or choose your service amongst their pick of several other contractors, you must still pay for. So you might not get a client from the lead, but still pay roughly $50 for it anyway.
Other than those basic wastes of money and time, after finally canceling my account (which was just financially bleeding me dry if I ever forgot to pause' my leads -they ONLY allow you to pause leads online for two weeks at the most-) is where I ran into issues with them. Not only did everyone working for H. A. try their hardest to manipulate me into contracting for them longer and not canceling my account, but it was to the point where they knew I wanted nothing but to cancel, yet until I raised my voice and shouted "may i speak to your manager about canceling my account?" that the response was simply you're account is canceled, goodbye'.
The worst part? Apparently my account had automatically renewed (unknown to me) two days before I canceled my account, which was $287 for the year. So, of course, I call back these scam artists in search of a refund, as I am not using their services at all this year, assuming they'd be fair and say "sure, you pay us for the two days you used and we'll refund you the $270", or something similar. As a business owner myself, I would do nothing less for my clients personally. Instead, I called them and spoke to a supervisor and all they had to say to me was well, now that you're no longer a contractor working with us, we cannot issue any refund at all". I'm now in the process of reporting a fraudulent charge with my bank, as H. A. did not want to help me at all. If that isn't the biggest red flag scam, I don't know what is. This is for sure how they stay in business and make the money they do, throughout the two years with them they have been nothing but unhelpful and combative at every step along the way. I hope to god NOBODY joins their service as a contractor like I naively did years back. I'm here as an honest warning to anyone seeking my side of the truth from working with such a shady, uncompromising company.

Bad Service
March 2, 2020

It's a RIP-off. They are tough to reach by phone, probably by design. The leads are below average. One in 5 is a serious inquiry. The rest are price shoppers who don't realize that they are costing the contractors (like me) money... or are just trying to find out how much to pay their neighbor or family member to complete the project. Home Advisor claims to help you build an online brand, but they are really trying to boost their own brand on the backs of hard working small businesses... and if you leave them... all those reviews you worked so hard to get... belong to them. So, as a contractor, think hard before you jump on with Home Advisor. As a shopper, consider finding local contractors by scrolling down a few links on your search. Finding your local contractor without using Home Advisor will save them some money and it will likely be reflected in a lower price point because the contractor won't have to pay to call you.

I am tired of having to pay for dead leads or leads from customers that think Home Advisor services are free and after being quoted a price decide it is to much money and are going to tdo the project themselves prior to me even biding the jobs.
Example. HA charged me 58.00 for a job that requires 2 bedrooms to be painted 143 sq ft per room. A fair price in ******* area code is $1.49 per square foot ( $426.14 including materials are 100.00 plus the lead cost of 58.00. So minus 158.00 leaves a balance of 268.00 for a 8 hour day. This comes to 33.52 per hour. Now take off the cost of fuel and vehicle expense, licensed insures for business and vehicle. This leave about 23.50 per hour. This is hardly a income that can sustain a private business. Where does HA get off charging 58.00 for painting 2 rooms and then charges the same price to paint 1600 sq ft?

I was charged upwards of 260.00 for leads. One never responded one said she has already received a bid and decided to do the job herselfs, one I do not have the required insurance for work on a Government facility. One said she is to busy now and will call me back at a later date. One I drove 30 miles one way and bid the job and he called back and canceled stating his neighbor offered to do the repairs for free. How does a business stay in business when they have to COMPETE WITH FREE. This service is a waste of my time and money when dealing with dead leads. HA needs to inform potential customers that the contractors are charged a referral fee for their information and not advertise FREE SERVICE on their TV commercials. Also know that there is a initial set up fee of $298.00 per year befor you get lead 1.

I owe HA 384.00 dollars and received 625.00 of actual work So basically I am working to support Home Advisor and my insurance company and car mechanic/repairs or car loan.

HomeAdvisor generates expensive empty leads for service providers and then encourages them to pass these expenses off to the homeowner in the form of higher costs for services. Homeowners believe that HomeAdvisor is looking out for their interests; in reality HomeAdvisor is a business and a higher quantity of providers paying for a higher amount of referrals is much more important to their bottom line than the best interests of their homeowners.

I'm a top rated Contractor in my city because I care about my customers but this company only cares about the $$$ so I must warn all of you out there, if you plan on using this company be prepared to receive 1 good lead (@ $80-$120 per lead) for every 5 leads sent to you and then remember you also have to bid against competitors, so you roughly spend $500 for 1 lead that may not pan out, bottom line is the "Juice isn't worth the squeeze". Also their customer service reps are somewhat robotic and you can easily detect an underhanded tone over the phone, a complete lack of sincerity. Until Homeadvisor changes their policies, lead generator and ethics I urge you to consider this review as a strong warning to stray away.

Horrible Company
February 27, 2020

I have hired two "pros" from this company. It was clear that neither had experience. They both did terrible work and wanted to raise the price once working with the home! I had to ask both to leave, without finishing the work. The second time it was clear I was being robbed. When I attempted to submit a review to HomeAdvisor I was asked for receipts etc proving that these people came to my home. Why would I submit false negative reviews for specific companies. These aren't 100 dollar projects, its 300 dollars plus! I was wondering why these two businesses did not have poor reviews, then I would have obviously choose other people. But the reviews can be debated and so I'm sure most people don't bother after the nightmare, hence why these companies don't have bad reviews! Stay Away! If you can't find someone quickly for your project. It is best to wait and continue asking friends or neighbors.

CONTRACTORS BEWARE!
February 26, 2020

I was a Home Advisor contractor for 2 years. I have never been screwed so bad in all my life. Mostly absolute bogus leads... that you pay top dollar for. Examples: a sixteen year old girl doing a school project. She saw a vacant house with a For Sale sign. She created a Home Adv. Request for whole house remodel. I got that lead and paid over $121.00 for it. Home Advisor would not refund my money for that lead. Other leads I paid for were disconnected phone numbers, and even a marketer selling emergency panic buton pendants for the elderly. This is the type of bogus leads any Home Advisor contractor receives.

The HA business model is terrible! Their tv ads promote "FREE FREE FREE FREE service to connect you with pros who can take care of your projects". Never do they tell a customer that those contractors actually PAY to get their phone number for a lead. Many times a customer is just dreaming about getting a deck someday and they want some idea what that will cost. So a contractor pays over $100 just to talk to a joker. When you complain to HA they tell you, "We are NOT guaranteedjobs.com. We cannot promise you will get every lead to close a deal. I closed maybe 1 out of 20. I stayed with it for 2 years hoping to see the light of day. Not a prayer!

They screw the contractor. Argue and fight with you when you try to get a credit for completely bogus leads. If this is the only way for you to get work because you are new in your business and cannot afford big advertising - I suggest you go get a job somewhere. You will NOT make a go of your business with home advisor. You can thank me later.

BEWARE!
February 25, 2020

I needed some screens replaced at my mothers home so I thought I'd try Home Advisor. I called and explained to the lady what I needed done and she gave me a quote. The day before the job was scheduled, someone from a company texted me and told me all the things I needed to do before he got there the next day. He said I had to remove some parts and go to the store and buy everything that he needed. This was not explained to me by the representative. I was at work and could not leave to do this. The quote they gave me was for labor only. Again, this was not explained to me. Very poor communication. This was my first time trying Home Advisor and I think it will be my last!
