Orders placed and confirmed are cancelled with explanations such as "system glitches" etc.
Orders actually processed and received are sub-par compared to other sources.
I would not recommend this company.
I just bought tomato and pepper plants. When they arrived after being in the mail for 9 days the peppers were needing water but still green, the tomato plants were in horrible shape and probably sick when they were shipped. Whole plant yellow, most of the leaves off or dead. I have emailed customer service twice with no answer.
I bought some plants from Gurney's during a sale on their website and checked out. Paid by credit card, standard website checkout process where they determine the total due and you pay it.
I never received part of the order, and the plants I did receive took 1 month to arrive and one of them was dead. But the real kicker is that 2 months later I got a paper bill in the mail for a balance due of $8. I actually thought it was a scam at first, because there's no way for a customer to pay anything other than the total due at checkout on a website. I contacted support and they said $8 is the difference between what I paid at checkout on the website and the full cost of the plants.
Turns out it's Gurney's itself that is the scam.
Several times I have called relative to orders and ended up in India or some such place where they barely speak English and have little knowledge about gardening. Extremely difficult to work with these people as they keep putting you on hold while they try to look up information.
Secondly a very miserable time trying to get a bill corrected with no luck after three calls. Last year onion sets arrived rotten and was told their fields had been flooded and no replacements but would send them this year. The sets arrived this year in good shape but was charged $19.98 due from what little I could understand a price increase. I tried to explain that a replacement order should not have any charges but had no success here. Fortunately there are other Seed Companies that will be glad to have my business.

If I could give this company a zero rating I sure would. Was shorted 10 strawberry plants. Ordered a blueberry bush it came just laying in box completely dried out a brittle stick. Have never been so disappointed in a company. Customer service was a complete waste of time. After repeating myself 6 or 7 times he just didn't know had to consult his supervisor then disconnected what a surprise. Never again last 80.00 dollars you will get from us.
Ordered 9 bare root raspberry canes. Received 3 plants in peet pots. 2 are alive, the third not so much. I have reported this issue to Gurney's twice and so far have received no response. They did acknowledge shipping was short so I received credit for 6 of the "plants"
I've ordered from them for years, and noticed these last 2 years the plants and shipments were less than reliable! We ordered 2 grape vines, one came dead, 2 elderberry's, one came dead, ordered 3 tomato plants, never shipped, so I emailed them, oh they were shipped 10 days ago, now it's a 3 day weekend, I'm pretty sure I will not be having tomato plants this year. Sorry they have become so unreliable, I use to look forward to using this company.
Sadden by the lack of integrity. Due to no longer available and credit I was informed they can only refund the additional cost I paid. The bean tower backorder 4 times, if you cancel they want refund entire dollar amount. Warning! 5 months delay!
I buy my garden seeds every year from Gurneys. Their seeds are the best and I always have a beautiful productive garden. They carefully package and ship in a prompt manner. Plants are healthy and packaged to withstand the trip. They offer great deals and give good discounts to return customers. Their catalogue is free and beautiful, you can also buy it all online. Have used them over 5 years and love their products and service.
Maybe I got lucky, but I ordered twice from Gurney's and they were not bad experiences. The first time I ordered a peach tree and it came perfectly packaged, in good timing and the instructions were simple and easy. My peach tree is growing strong two years later with no issues. It is just as resilient as it was advertised. The second time I ordered a pack of variety roses, and 3/5 thrived. Gurneys was good for me, but I can only vouch for my peach tree and roses.
Well I have ordered seed from them and plants. I can tell you about the seed right now. The seeds I bought were Kale along with several others. I will say I love the Kale seeds they are extremely easy to grow. We had very delicious Kale this past season. I planted artichoke and they just popped right up. I planted Beets oh my goodness I love pickled Beets... well they came up just fine also. I have had seeds that are mixed with other seeds for whatever reason. I don't really care why they are mixed but I don't like it. I like planting and growing the seeds that I ordered and not different varietys of that seed. So Gurney's well let me tell you what I have absolutely no problem with them. I did think they had forgot to ship some plants but they I looked at the order status and they ship them out when the window is good for your state and also when the season is right also. I like that too. I like getting the things I am suppose to grow in the proper season to plant them. I prefer getting citrus trees in the warmer months. Well you know what I mean. Anyway I love their customer service also they are extremely helpful when you need them.
It's been about 11 weeks now and still no seeds. I contacted Gurney's asking for a tracking number and they completely ignored me! My order just says 'shipped', they don't provide you with any other tracking info. Will not buy from here ever again!
Absolute worst customer service. Instead of assisting to resolved the issue. All I've heard from them "was we can't and we don't". No accountability whatsoever. Blamed fed ex and made it sound like it was my fault. Company is a fraud!
Jan 8 0rdered5 trees all in stock.April 16 received one tree saying the other 4 out of stock. You can see from my photos how irate I am.What is their gimmick. They had guaranteed payment. Why do they do this and shamefully say sorry.Causing a loss of enjoyment.Who supervises this blatant fraud.
I ordered 3 tango hummingbird mint plants. They were all dried out and dead when they arrived. Even worse, when I called to report this, the customer service representative did not act like this was unusual. She was rude. Whatever happened to class? If she worked for me, I'd fire her. I got my money back, but to be honest, a simple apology should be STANDARD procedure. These plants are packaged in such a way that you have to literally tear into the hard plastic that surrounds the tiny seedlings. So even if the seedlings were alive, you'd probably kill them trying to get to them! I have dealt with mail order plants before and never had any problems.
Took too long for my order to come, customer service gave me incorrect information about my order ( they told me my order didn't go through, when it actually did) looks more like a 2 long stick instead of apple tree. Almost 3 weeks now and no signs of growing yet. It's end of April in Philadelphia and all fruit trees finished booming by now, mine doesn't have any signs of any leaves or anything :( don't think I would order again from this company
I bought seed and tomato plants from them for first time... won't do it again. The live plants didn't look robust and healthy when they arrived ( on time as promised) and now 7 weeks in the ground they haven't grown at all - still look like the day they arrived. Sweet corn, sunflower seeds have failed and the peas are sporadic. I'm an experienced country girl and will go back to the tried and true names. 2017 garden is a write off... so disappointed
I ordered plants that needed to be planted in early spring. I was told that they would be shipped the first week in April. They kept delaying my shipment back by two weeks. Then today (May 22) my order was cancelled without any kind of communication from them.
I took time to kill the grass on my hill for these plant, and I was ready to plant them in early spring. I wish I could rate them negative stars.
My first order from Gurney's will be my last. Their shipping methods assured that the plants that they DID ship would arrive gasping for life. I'm not certain how healthy they were to begin with. Hard to tell when the plants are nearly dead.
Two items still have not shipped. The original dates were approximately 2 months ago. I doubt that my tomato plants will have time to produce tomatoes and my lilac, who knows.
Expensive and unreliable. No communication. Never again. You lost a customer and I will always tell others who ask to avoid Gurneys at all costs. I have ordered from some wonderful online sources. Gurneys is NOT one of them.
Ordered all my garden seeds over three weeks ago as to start garden indoors for transplanting. Still no seeds have arrived. Next year, I'll order seeds from China, they are much faster. Oh yes,. I only live 200 miles from Gurneys too.
Answer: It use to be a good company, now it seems like they don't care about quality.
Answer: Phone call the wait is moderate. However they just read from a script so are not helpful. I requested to speak to a manager. One wasnt available so the rep said one would call me by end oaf day. Of course I never got a call back from a manager.
Answer: Johnny's Selected Seeds is great for seeds. They are always tested for viability and the company is employee-owned. https://www.johnnyseeds.com/
