I bought or an explanationa DNA test for my wife for 99.00 dollars. That was fine A couple months later they billed me for 2 more kits and I could not get a refund or an explanation so I gave them as Christmas presents. Now they have billed me again and I cant do anything about it because their service is terrible. I only wanted 1 and now I am up to 400.00 in charges. PLEASE DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY, They will take your money without permission. I have to change banks to keep them out of my money. I wish I had never heard of them.
Got in Paid money, Got shafted, cant get a password. Cant. Access my records.
Cannot access census. They one step your credit card. I am now putting my activity on Wikitree and am starting a Campaign to WIPE OUT ANCESTRY.COM
I would vote ZERO stars if that were an option! Absolutely worthless for doing any type of search, and when you try to cancel the "free" trial, they STILL BILL YOU! AND CHARGE A $25 "CANCELLATION FEE"! SCAMMERS!
I agree with what everyone has said. After being with Ancestry since 2002 I now find my family tree has been rewritten!
My Great Grandmother is now my Step Grandmother making everyone one else before her NOT in my blood line I CAN'T change it either Absolutely hopeless!
Wake yourselves up Ancestry!
Total rip-off. Everything they offer you can find elsewhere, for free or much cheaper. Customer service? Don't even bother. Doesn't exist. Don't waste your money.
Contacted customer support and they ain't going to change back. This WAS the site of choice: can anyone give me an alternative, which works? And is adequately fast?
Well, my results were so general, they could belong to anyone! Eastern European, Western European and either Italian or Greek! Wow, what a disappointment, I learned nothing.
I'm not sure how accurate a saliva test can be, but I was very interested in learning my ethnic background and my general ancestor history. Seems hi-tech to me.
Ancestry is a scam! They matched my daughter to the wrong father, and I have hard core evidence of this! They are also way off on the regions! Don't waste your money!
You have put absolute garbage on some of my ancestors profiles with your new setup. It is taking me a life time to get my tree back in order. I have lost all my notes and goodness knows what else
Typical scam to auto bill you... read all fine print! Try calling them to cancel... you'll be on hold forever. The only way to get out is cancelling your credit card
Have an expensive subscription then paid $100 for DNA. My results won't load properly and I keep getting a message to try back in a few minutes - FOR DAYS. Customer service only states it's a "known issue" and they are "working on it". Site has been loading slow for weeks now. Feel trapped because of all the research I saved to the site. ANCESTRY PLEASE IMPROVE
I would have given this site a five star rating IF it delivered as promised when you sign up. Don't get me wrong... I use ancestry.com a lot, found a sibling and many cousins through Ancestry.com. That said, the site has software glitches that it cannot repair.
Since September 2013 Ancestry.com has failed to deliver invitations to join my family tree (I sent them to family members) and failed to deliver email notifications of data updates to those who are already members. I have called, written and even posted on their Facebook page to no avail. They know of the problem BUT cannot tell me when the problems will be fixed.
ANcestry.com charges a lot of money for full access to their site and data. I do think this is the most comprehensive genealogy site available but not the best, by any means. Plus... the DNA test is a rip-off. All you get back are "possible" matches of third, fourth, fifth, etc. etc. Cousins. None of them have been real for me.
So, if you choose to go with Ancestry.com I recommend you sign up for the least expensive option. Or, try another site until they can get their glitches repaired and working again.
Have had a Canadian account for 18 years. Last year they raised my rate by over $35 stating it was. Now adding taxes. No way. Taxes have always been included. Over the 18 years I have seen a big decline in service. They say more records but actually less information. They have also been slowly removing source documents and replacing it with index cards or as the case with military information, paid access to another website. Another problem is their location database. I contains impossible locations and these populate the family tree histories on the results pages. Go to the actual tree and these locations do not show up. It's also very difficult to perform a search with their search engine. You can put in very specific search data and the person won't show up or will show up on a distant page of the results, long after people who have no matches to any of the search criteria other than last name. Yet when you finally locate the record, the results show the exact information you used in the original search. Was very happy with Ancestry but now only use it as an initial 'unverified' source and usually try to get better verification on other sites like Family Search.
Typifies buyer beware. While entering information for my tree on this site, I noticed 12 trees that had entered incorrect information either based on faulty research, pulling incorrect info from another family tree without researching to verify it was correct, or jumping to an erroneous conclusion. Since the information in question is about my immediate family, who is better to know, especially with documentation to back it up? I contacted the owners of the trees in question, and gave them the correct information, requesting correction. Nada. Nothing. Not even the courtesy of a response. Ancestry "cannot do anything" to correct the information except make the pictures I posted private. And what good will that do? Nothing. Because the trees that have already snatched/copied those pictures will remain and remain as public pictures. Under the wrong person. Right. If you decide to utilize this site anyway, be aware that the info you are looking at - unless it is a government document is more than likely bogus; quality control of information does not exist.
I have been a customer since 2013 and have enjoyed the countless hours I have spent building my family tree from the information on Ancestry databases. However, my experience today has changed my view on this company. My husband purchased a DNA kit for me last year for Christmas, unknowingly signing up for a subscription when doing so. We have been double paying the subscription fees for almost a year ($344). Customer service discovered this extra account when I called to inquire by running our credit card. Once discovered, I asked about a refund or partial refund on the account that my husband mistakenly created but never used. I was told a flat "no refunds", not willing to meet half way on cost or even refund the 86.00 they just took in just last month! We now have an account until March that has NOTHING in it! My husband did not understand that he was signing up for the "service" and not just the kit. Ancestry.com can see there has never been any activity on that account. Most "service" companies have some exception leeway for instances such as this. Buyer beware/be careful. After reading the reviews on here...this seems more like a mistake by Ancestry design.
Why can I no longer access my family tree without signing a contract? We built that tree four years ago and now they want me to subscribe to access it. I'm done with them
Im a long time Ancestry customer/member. My wife and I have done the DNA testing as well as researched our ancestry, its been so much fun, really enjoyed it. However I decided to take a break for a while so I closely watched for when my subscription was come to an end ( July 2) because their site will automatically renew, and if there is a way not to have that happen, I am not aware of it, and it certainly isnt obvious. So I canceled my membership on June 30 but you for some reason they renewed my membership and charged my credit card! Thats not nice. So I canceled again, and again and again explaining each time why. Obviously no one actually reads the comments. So I had to get a hold of my Credit card company and disclaim the charge. I shouldnt have to do this. Ancestry should be better than this. They have a great company, but stuff like this makes them look like shysters. I hope they will address this issue.
SCAM ALERT! I purchased three kits recently, one for me and two for some friends. Turns out that my friends already used AncestryDNA, with no new discoveries by the way. I called customer support to return 2 of the kits, the customer service rep stated they charge a $25 partial refund fee for each kit. This is an UNETHICAL scam, knowing very well people won't return the item with such a large fee. DO NOT BOTHER WITH ANCESTRY.COM, take a look at all the other negative feedback online.
To the Ancestry.com customer service agent, please don't bother responding with your pre-written responses that have no true resolution. They make your company look worse then it already is. No, I don't want to re-gift this product to anyone.
Canadian Users Beware!
I just spent an hour on the chat with Ancestry. Turns out that way back in 2014 I somehow went to the US site (possibly through the "visit our other sites" box at the bottom of the page) and, without any kind of warning, my subscription was changed to US and never changed back. Therefore, I have been paying for a US subscription for the last 9 years - which is about $1,500 or more dollars extra. They offered me 6 months of free All Access. I declined and asked to have the issue escalated to someone who could do more and the support person on chat ended it - in effect, hanging up on me! I posted this on the Ancestry Facebook page and it definitely seems like I am NOT the only one. Luckily others noticed their charges sooner but obviously this is a real scam they are running on people. I have been a member of Ancestry since 2007. I will definitely be looking to change once this subscription ends. Ancestry, you should be ashamed of the way you are duping people and the terrible way you respond to them!
Answer: I agree... so many current complaints yet they seem to be more concerned with signing up new, younger members who are more deeply engaged in technology. It is business to these folks and they have to get younger people joining to make more money long term. Baby boomers though are their natural market and as more boomers retire and have more time and discretionary income they will be the ones who will be likely to join over the next few years.
Answer: Hi Joan, I see Karen above has answered your question regarding the old site. Full that box in Joan, tell them why you are leaving, give it to them straight. Write what you have put above, and more if so inclined. I have told them exactly what I think of their new so called experience! I think they have got a nerve inflicting this on us without even asking. They have made so many errors on the profiles, I know I shall have to check through every person on my tree, the mistakes they have put on are unbelievable, maps have been added that have nothing to do with the person. But the whole new set up is not enjoyable to use at all, the background colour is very hard on the eyes. I hate this new site with a passion! They should give us the choice of the format. From feedback I have seen, most of their long term customers much prefer the old site, Ancestry don't seem to realise what a great unique format they had, it was really classy, I loved working on it for hours and hours. They should listen to their customers, because they are going to be leaving their site in droves when the old ancestry is not available anymore. I shall use the old site as long as possible, then look for somewhere else to do my researching
Answer: Go to the right side of the page up at top where you sign in, and in the pull down menu there will be a place to go back to the old, classic ancestry, you know however, soon they are pulling the plug
Ancestry has a rating of 1.6 stars from 635 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with Ancestry most frequently mention customer service, free trial and credit card. Ancestry ranks 13th among Genealogy sites.
