I joined Thumbtack as a pro in 2014 and built a successful business primarily through the site. It was affordable and convenient and I had full control of my bidding, my message and my costs.
Their new system where I am charged a huge increase in fee when a "lead" contacts me (even for a simple question) is a rip-off. I cannot even personalize my quote to respond to requests that I choose to bid. I know how to market my business and have been successful and profitable. I am a "TopPro" for years with many 5 star ratings and hired many times.
My mistake was in focusing almost exclusively on Thumbtack. Now I'm starting over with other platforms that are more affordable.
Thumbtack was a good platform. Now it is terrible. I know that they have to be profitable. So do I.
This was a nightmare before it even started. Every lead they gave us were nonresponsive and sometimes the same fake lead would be billed for twice. When we contact to our credit issue or we got the third degree from thumbtack saying that we had to go through their special department to obtain a refund. We explained that unauthorized billing is taken seriously and our bank immediately issues chargebacks in these cases. While this wasn't dispute they even sent over another fake lead and tried to bill us another $4.58 which they are still haunting us for. Stay away from thumbtack it is a bad bad place to do business with. No ethics.
We would highly recommend Jeremy for any renovation or repair
Work.
Jeremy worked with us on an installation of stained glass in a
Scottsdale church.
Jeremy has a great attitude, very reliable and is fun to work with.
His skill and workmanship exceeded our expectations. He helped
Us with finish carpentry, and some tricky electrical work. Jeremy is
A good problem solver and is willing to invest his creative effort on
Our behalf. He is capable, conscientious and meticulous in his
Attention to detail on all aspects of his work.
Jeremys skill, experience and expertise would be an asset on any
Job site.
They are in it for the money. Couldn't care less if people find work. They send post of jobs for out of state. Spend a lot of time cleaning those out of my email and out of my messages. Send me a message claiming a customer wants to know when I am available and they are contacting only me cost me to reply which I do. Then never another word from the person. Complete ghost. They don't even read my message no oh sorry changed my mind. No refund for me. What a rip off. For all I know it was them sending it. During the virus shutdown money is tight as it is.
I spent over two years building our thumbtack account and a small remodeling business. A customer wrote in demanding a refund which we felt was high. We offered to go to FairClaims and give them a lien on property while it was being settled. Thumbtack froze our account, and after we reached a settlement with the customer, deactivated us without any warning or explanation as to why. We were not even given the chance to get feedback on our interaction or what terms we violated if any.
Please be warned, you can spend years investing into this platform, give customers what they want, and they can still shut you down. We are now being forced to explore other platforms. Maybe it is a good thing to spend our advertising budget elsewhere.
I've attempted to post on Thumbtack, looking for concrete service... three times and each time Thumtack support kicked it back saying my request was either "inappropriate; or that I was non-existent. Etc etc." Each time I contacted their customer support thru the email link provided in their email to me... its been a week and I'm still waiting. Gues they must be out on a job... so much for "Customer Support"..
I registered in Thumbtack app as a pro. They sent me some emails and refered me some customers which I was not able to work with them. I did not accept the customers but they charged me for $90 for nothing. Now they dont refund my money! Please stay away from this company.
Hi Kar, we apologize for the experience you had, but thank you for sharing feedback. It sounds like your preferences might need to be updated to ensure you're getting the types of jobs you want, here's instructions to update them: https://help.thumbtack.com/pros/topic-targeting-preferences-lh-pro/subtopic-set-my-preferences-lh. You're welcome to submit refunds for leads here: https://help.thumbtack.com/pros/topic-cost-and-payments-lh-pro/subtopic-refunds-lh.
I am over three hundred in debt because the Thumbtack company wasn't upfront about how the things operate! They encourage you to request because are going to charge you $29.99 when you do! My wife is still yelling about this one!
I used to use thumbtack religiously for leads, but now they give leads to 33 pros instead of 5 like they used to which means way more competition and less likelihood of you getting a job. But they are charging the same price for a lead. Don't use them.
I use the service much like Uber eats although they assured me that I would be getting the food immediately after several hours of waiting and no contact and no answer I'm really surprised that this place is even in business
If there's anything we can do to help or improve your experience, please let us know at support@thumbtack.com.
I've been using thumbtack at a business owner for over a year. It started out really great, but I get charged quite a lot for leads that are not in my preferences or for jobs that I even do. They used to be really great about refunding for these issues, but now all I get is an automated response gaslighting me saying that it is in my preferences when the job is categorized wrong on their end. From what I hear the owner of home advisor is the same person who owns thumbtack. Run as fast as you can that company is notorious for lawsuits & scamming people with fake leads.
They were the best, would hire again, looking for another project so I can hire him again.
He painted the exterior of my house did a great job, love the color the work is great, and. The
Guys were great. If I Could I would give his company five plus stars.
So after being a thumbtack pro since 2013 when the company first made their initial day break, I received an email at 4 AM this morning telling me that my account was dissolved. After calling and speaking with Pro-Support they had told me that my account had been taken down due to me referring certain services outside of my business. 2 hours of me $#*!ing out the supervisors and upper management, they had told me that they are going to dig into it however, If I am allowed to use thumbtack again, my company profile will have to be rebuilt and all customer reviews, jobs & hires will be gone and that it will be a profile from scratch.
I cant begin to tell you how disgusted I am with this service after spending THOUSANDS of dollars on leads and building a good working relationship with their company.
Not to mention the $100 in credits that were on my account.
I submitted my project to 4 "pros" and not one of them ever got back to me, not even to say they would not be available. It was a severely time-constrained project and I had to scramble to find someone once I realized Thumbtack was useless. Plus, one of the people recommended for me to contact was all the way across the country, so not even remotely helpful. I will never try Thumbtack again for any reason and I will never recommend them..
Mr. Thomassy was a complete professional in our house. We were doing some painting and I noticed an irregularity in the wall. I was concerned we may have had damage due to a leak, since tropical storm Colin had just come through a couple nights before and the house had leaked in this particular area a few years back. Mr. Thomassy was able to put our minds at ease by not only telling us we didn't have a leak, but showing us images on his thermal camera and comparing them to dry sections of our house and more moist areas so that we could see for ourselves. I would highly recommend AMVETPRO and their thermal imaging techniques. I would be shocked to learn of a harder working or friendly business that can you leave with complete peace of mind.
This company is based on stealing money from hard working contractors.
They send you fake leads so they can charge your credit card. After they get your money, even if you complain, they will not return the cost of the fake lead to you.
Fo not use this company, trust me!
In the past 6 months Thumbtack has lied about their prices, their distance to customers, their customer identities and the professionals.
All they care about is money. It is a rip off!
Do not use Thumbtack!
This site is a straight scam. You are charged for pseudo leads that you have no way of knowing if they are real or not. I have paid out for "leads" that have only amounted to me being informed that they were leads. NOTHING ELSE! No way of contacting the generator of the lead. No way of knowing if the lead was even valid. Just words saying they have a lead for you... and you get charged for that. Then there's the case where you get charged for the exact same lead twice simple because the first lead has a different letter in the name yet everything else is spot on copy! This site is not a site for finding leads for work or anything like that. It's a site that simply charge you for SAYING they have a lead
UPDATE: Join Don's Class Action Lawsuit by contacting him here... https://wdophoto.com/
Also, for those looking and can not find this is Thumbtack's number *******809
Hi Jerry, we're sorry to hear that this was your experience on Thumbtack. We encourage you to submit refunds for these leads by following these steps: https://help.thumbtack.com/article/how-to-request-a-refund. It's important to us that pros receive quality leads, while they may not always result in a hire, you shouldn't have to pay for duplicate leads.
They take your money but can't give it back and giving back credit is forcing someone to spend back what they lost not making sense at all I will never stop to let all hardworking people now that your money is being exchanged for credit back to your account nobody is an idiot.
I am a professional mover. A lot of people told me to try thumbtack to get jobs close to home. I set it up, paid for credits and starting bidding on jobs. My mistake. I went through the first set of credits, received one job. Paid $99.00 for 50 more credits received another job. The 2 jobs I did no where paid for the credits and the blind bidding really stinks. One bid was a studio apartment move. The first load I did for the guy was a studio apartment. The second load he had was two storage areas in the basement of the apartment building. Another full load. I lost money in both bids due to not being able to ask questions before I bid the job. There are a lot of reviewing quotes, meaning the site is making millions off of good hard working people. I am deleting this site from my phone and will never use it again. This site sucks.
Answer: Thumbtack does not generate fake requests. When our professionals come to Thumbtack to meet new customers, we know how important it is to receive requests that can help them expand their clientele. We have a lot of customers that come to Thumbtack and hire professionals to help them complete their personal projects. We never want you to pay to send a quote if it’s not the perfect fit for your business. This is why you can view the details of each request before you send a quote and introduce yourself to the customer. James - I’m so sorry that the concerns you’ve brought to our attention haven’t been responded to in an appropriate amount of time, this is never our intention. It's important to us to obsess about answering our customers and professionals questions and concerns within a timely manner. We are a real company that can always be improving. You can read more about our company in reputable sources such as Forbes and the New York Times. If anyone has specific concerns about certain requests you’re receiving, we’d be happy to review them and see how we can help. Feel free to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we have an amazing support team that is just waiting to talk to you.
Answer: Hi Kay, I’d be happy to answer your questions. When we initially started Thumbtack in 2009, we tried multiple business models. This included a commission based model, but there were some concerns. When professionals didn’t pay for each quote they sent out, there was nothing to stop pros from quoting as much as possible, regardless of if they were the right fit for the job. Paying for each quote encourages better quality quotes and creates a much better experience for customers. Like you mentioned, it’s important for us to get customers to try our site and continue to hire professionals. In the end, pros are paying to promote and advertise themselves to customers that are already actively looking for that particular service. S. G has an amazing point, and Thumbtack is a great introduction site. There’s a lot of potential to expand your clientele, but sometimes it takes some tweaking to your profile and quotes to increase your response rate. The goal is to create a connection through your profile and quote message, and we’re here to help you do this. It’s kind of like sending the customer a virtual portfolio of your experience, achievements, and reviews. I do want to clarify that Thumbtack does not create fake requests, and it goes against everything we value as a company. While Thumbtack may not be the perfect fit for every business, we strongly believe that we can help connect businesses with new customers and foster growth. If you’d like to give us a call at (800) 343-1710, we’d love to give you more personalized help or answer any other concerns you may have.
Answer: We love to see that you’re interested in joining Thumbtack, Grace! Your party planning business sounds like it will be a blast. When it comes to having a license, it's up to each professional to determine what licenses are necessary and follow their local, state and federal laws. I recommend checking with your state to see if a business license is needed for your service. Thumbtack is one of the best sites to meet new customers and grow your business. Robert S. Gave a really good explanation of how we work. You can sign up and receive requests for free, and you only pay us when you send the customer a quote. Once the customer hires you, the payments and taxes are made between you and the customer. This is a great way to connect with the customer and build an extensive referral network. We wish you the best of luck with growing your business. Have an amazing day!
Answer: The reason you had a lull in leads we because thumbtack had a manual action penalty levied against them. If you are not sure what that is you should google search it. The letter you received from Thumbtack regarding this was (as usual) not fully truthful. The letter does not detail the slimy tactics thumbtack used ti enhance google rankings in organic search returns. Do yourself a favor and search this phrase "thumbtack manual action penalty"
Answer: With our recent changes, you're only charged when a customer responds to your quote with interest in working with you. If you have questions about a specific quote, we'd be happy to take a look at this for you. Just send us a message on Facebook with your email address and the customer's name.
Answer: We want to make sure you get the most out of our site and see a return on the investment you've made with us. Please give us a call at (800) 948-2034 when you have time so we can go over your concerns with us.
