I woke up to find no internet connectivity. I called RCN and they said my last payment was denied by the bank. Ok, I calmly call my bank and they researched the issues and told me no payment request was received from RCN on the date RCN quoted. So I pay off the outstanding balance and had a one hour delay getting services running. I verified the checking account that was to be drafted and it was correct in their system.
One positive, the last RCN agent I talked to was able to restore my cable serve by having me manipulate the modem. However, the 1-star rating is for the billing transaction error.
I made a screenprint of my 1/2021 RCN bill because I knew/believed they'd do something to invalidate the promotional offers before the offer ended and wanted a reminder in front of my nose. Without a contract, they keep increasing their prices and they won't let you down. In Nov. '21, my bill was $311 but in Jan. '21 it was $220. We've had Optimum and Charter (in 2010, Charter was ranked at the bottom of Cons. Rpts. List of ranked cable svcs).
On their 1/2021 bill, a few promotional offers were clearly listed that expire July-August 2022. In July 2021, there was a vague paragraph on page 4 of bill "IMPORTANT NOTICE" that said an error was made. What error - nothing was stated and contacting 2 or 3 RCN reps didn't know but the bill went up the next month. Then it went up again in Nov. For a bundled internet package from $115.99 to $141.99 and their obsolete cable modem from $7.95 to $12.95 BUT both have expiration dates of July & August 2022.
If you still need to be convinced not to get RCN, look at BBB and see how many complaints they have. In the meantime, I'm just waiting for the next insane increase. Hope my spouse changes his mind so I can ditch them and celebrate :) !
Salesman was nice, but exaggerated cost savings, was wrong about fibre optic service and didn't even mention I was getting TiVO. Install went fine, but serviceman didn't give me much information: router password, account number and left no instructions for TivO remote. TiVO remote and menus for TV are ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUSLY POOR. I subscribe to Signature level, but TV guide by default shows EVERY channel. The process to show only channels I receive TAKES OVER AN HOUR. The TV guide grid is very poorly laid out and the channels display by their cryptic acronyms or some stupid, useless ICON. The verbiage of many menu items is inaccurate and misleading. So far no Internet problems, except at my 250 Mbps service, Speedtest shows UPLOAD rates around 17 Mbps. The remote control forTIVO is ergonomically pathetic. If you are blind you can't tell if it upside down or right side up when you hold it. The letters on it require I use my glasses, sometimes a magnifying glass and the lights must be up. First week only at this point so no experience with billing issues everyone talks about. It's cheaper, and if I keep it is only because of the TivO. The phone service functions are antediluvian. The menus for the aux tvs (non-hd) are, actually very good--expecially compared to Verizon.
