Have rented here before through one of the cheap car rental aggregate websites. Had excellent experiences...until this one. Booked for $25.52/day. Arrived at 1:00, the time of my reservation, and they didn't have the car they'd slotted me for. Offered me a minivan. I didn't want to wait 45 minutes to an hour to get the intermediate car so I took it. Needed to extend my rental, and lo and behold, "Sir you have a minivan, it will be $35/day more than your current rate." Didn't matter I'd requested an intermediate and THEY made me have to take a minivan. So I went on their website and found I could again book an intermediate for $26.33/day. Called back, spoke to the same (alleged) manager, and was basically told tough crap, it doesn't matter. Will not do business with them again, which really sucks because their location staff is awesome, it's the corporate dolts that seem to really suck.
Placed reservation via hotwire for phoenix, its not at the airport, when we got there USAA ins doesn't cover the car rental, a 300 dollar deposit is required, you might get a windshield ding or door ding so that has to be covered and time the vehicle is not available for service will be taken out of the deposit. Their insurance is whatever, after hearing all that we canceled the reservation expecting to get a refund via hotwire, No refund allowed, NU says you have to reserve again, hotwire says reservation wasn't not canceled and is still valid, so NU refuses to honor a contract, like paying for groceries and the grocery store saying you cant have the groceries, like pre paying for gas and the station refusing to turn on the pump
After returning the car, my wife received an email that NU Car was keeping the hold amount ($455) because of damages she incurred. She incurred NO DAMAGES. NuCAR eventually admitted this. We are still waiting to get the "hold" amount back nearly a month later. Smells like a scam to wear you out and stop persuing your money back. She's on the phone with them again this morning.
Terrible communication. I was simply ripped off. I arrived at 5pm on a flight from SFO to San Diego with my good friends. We had a 4:30 reservation to get our SUV to begin our long weekend. We picked up our luggage, proceeded to take the shuttle to the rental facility. The second shuttle to the offsite office simply never came. Why? They closed the office at 5pm on a Thursday. No recourse, nobody to contact. They just closed. Shamelessly they and Hotwire stood by the fine print in the contract that deep within had the hours.
No car rental company I have ever heard of closes at 5 pm on on a Thursday let alone at a major airport. Not only was I embarrassed standing there within my friends to begin a weekend, but i had to spend a boatload at an on airport Avis. I've rented cars for thirty years and this is by far the worst experience I have ever had. I'm owed a refund at the least, and sn offset of the exorbitant overcharge I was forced to take as a result.
No words needed just a terrible company and a scamming one! They tried to scam us and when we asked how is that possible they asked us to leave without giving us the deposit back. We will sue this people! Big NO
Phoenix airport location is not just off-site, you have to take 2 shuttles. First a bus to the rental car location (where the other companies are) and then go outside and downstairs to visitor parking (poorly signed) and wait at a bench (in the heat) for another shuttle. Waited 18 minutes for the second shuttle for which I spent the last 11 minutes on the phone (never answered) trying to find out when the next shuttle was coming. Overall took about 1.5 hours from when I landed to when I finally had a rental car (my last trip with another company took me only 45 min from gate to car). Spent a lot longer than usual at the counter for someone who already had a reservation.
On returning the car, you have to take 2 shuttles again as they do not take you to the Airport but back to the other renal companies' location to catch the bus to the airport. So again taking twice as much time.
I made a reservation via Expedia to rent a car at LAX. When I arrived at the counter to pick up my car, they said they did not have ANY cars available! I asked when they would have a car for me and they said they did not know. I had a tight time schedule so I made other travel arrangements. I later found out that Nu Car had charged my credit card. I disputed the charge and new Car replied to my dispute saying I was a " No Show ". This is a lie. Nu Car charged me for making a reservation, not for renting a car. I am still fighting to get a refund from this company and have filed a complaint with the BBB and the state attorney generals office. Do not use this company.
THEY ARE A SCAM COMPANY AND BEWARE OF MISLEADING AND POOR BUSINESS PRACTICES! They were 0 stars. This was definitely the worst experience I've ever encountered in my 53 years of living. I am a frequent traveler and rent vehicles often. I rented a vehicle from Miami International Airport. I know the rental facility was located off the airport property which is fine. Upon arriving, I was asked for my car insurance declaration policy. I was not aware I would need this however thankfully I could log into the insurance website and emailed them the declaration page. I was then informed they only took selected insurance companies and mine was not on the list. I was forced to purchase their insurance at $25/day. Next, I was informed they required a $2,500 deposit to rent a vehicle. I was floored!
This company is a scam and should not be allowed to be in business.
I have rented vehicles for both business and for personal use for over 20 years but I have never experienced such unprofessional rental car service, ever. I reserved this rental car from NU on line because it was a low fare and was located in the Miami airport rental car facility. The location was not at the airport (this was deceiving, was off sight), check in was very slow with many hidden charges (website price point was deceiving), they didn't recognise our insurance so we had to purchase liability insurance (they only recognise 3 insurance companies for liability), the check out service was very slow (technicians crawled under the car, trough the car and brought a flash light into the vehicle, it was like they were looking for something specific and took ~20 minutes), the vehicle did have a scrape under the front bumper and the claim process was also unprofessional (damage to the underside of the vehicle was not visible, I think the damage was there previously, I didn't scrap a curb). Before you rent form this company, please read through all the fine print, there is a lot of customer risk built into this contract that you have to be aware of (this is not a forgiving contract like the main common rental agencies). I want you to be informed, please be very careful when renting from this company - the risk of additional / excessive fees and charges is very likely and the quality of service is very poor, I do not recommend using NU.
Fraudulent Charges! Crooked charges not listed in contract. Totally crooked! J.M. Andrews *******139, any time.
I'm very frustrated and not happy with my experience today Friday January 26 in LAX.
This is an email I sent to Expedia and a few different reviews on the internet.
This company is very poorly managed. I had a reservation for a SUV made, so I showed up at the car rental desk. They told me no car was available. No communication, no email, no text sent in the morning to inform me that there was no car available. First you need to take a bus from the airport to the car rental bus depot then wait for another shuttle to pick you up. (Yes, 2 different shuttles). After waiting about 10-15 minutes, I decided to walk to the hotel, (3 blocks away) I wasted my time, walking over there carrying my luggages to find out there was no SUV available.
I made a reservation on December 20 and my car should have been there for me. Because I haven't pre paid and reserved that car on Expedia, they do not respect booking from a third party. They told me they cannot do anything for me. They also said to other customers everyone booked through a third party will have to wait a few hours because they are out of cars and they will be helping people first who booked directly through them. I ended up spending over $800 from another car rental company. At least, they helped me to find another car rental but it cost me a lot more.
They told me that Expedia overbooked cars. This is not NU Car Rental fault, Not their responsibility. Ha, Ha,
I asked the agent for compensation and NU Car Rental refused. Really, this is not great.
Better to spend more money with a reputable car rental company than dealing with this backyard car rental company.
Thank you NU
I am not one to typically write a bad review and I tend to show an overabundance of grace, BUT…here goes. I highly recommend that you steer clear of Nu Car Rentals! I was quoted $64/day for a rental in Phoenix. When I picked up, I agreed to a second driver of $10/day for my adult daughter. The rep suggested that I do the fuel fill up through them because it was only $4.39 per gallon vs the going rate of $4.79 per gallon, so I could drop it off and they would fill up to bring it back to full tank. THEY SCAMMED ME. When I dropped off, we had a half a tank (we only used 200 miles total and I took picture). They charged for a full tank! $107 dollars! After they said- "they don't credit for unused fuel"?! WOW.
They also had a ridiculous amount of "fees". They did NOT say each fee would be doubled since there were two drivers. They charged a "rental surcharge", TWICE. They charged a "facility charge" TWICE, they charged an "airport fee" TWICE, they charged a "vehicle license fee" TWICE, a "stadium surcharge fee" TWICE, a Transaction Private Tax fee" TWICE, and a "short term vehicle rental fee" TWICE! What should have been a $296 dollar rental was $548! Customer service does not care what I have to say. Some of these fees were listed in the email they sent me the night before pick up (not at the time I secured the rental), but they did not explain that the second driver would incur these fees, or that the gas would be full tank expense. I should have just opted to fill up myself, but we had a 5:45 am drop off and she talked me into this being "more convenient". On a final note: we arrived at 5:45 am. We turned in the key to the drop box, unloaded uggage, and awaited our 6 am shuttle which was already going to be tight. That was their first shuttle going out. They didn't leave with us until 6:30 am, a half hour later than stated and he would not take us to ticketing/ departures- only to the sky tram which added another 15 minutes. YIKES for customer service!
I booked a 2 day car rental out of Phoenix AZ through Hotwire for September 22 starting and returning it September 24. I guess the total charge was supposed to be $175.11, which is hardly your claim to fame at $40.00 per day! You advertise lower prices, but when you're DONE you are still paying $87.00 a day!
Bait and Switch and ADD ONS!
When we came in to pick up the car it took forever to get out of there! Plus that Phoenix location looks very sketchy. If I would have been alone in the evening I would have left immediately! Another family was there picking up their car and we were talking about the location, they said they were there about 2 years prior and the place looks the exact same way! NU Car it's time to invest in making your pick up locations, not look like you're walking into a closed up business, in a poor area of town!
Now why am I writing this... I returned that car 1 day, plus a few hours early! You have the audacity to charge me for BOTH DAYS! SO WHAT YOU (HOTWIRE) CHARGED ME FOR (ONE) DAY CAR RENTAL WAS $175.11! THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND I EXPECT A REFUND FOR 1 DAY!
THEN NU CAR... I RETURNED THAT CAR BACK SPOTLESS, YOU WOULD NOT EVEN HAD TO CLEAN IT! I TRIED TO FILL UP IN GAS AT A STATION ONE BLOCK FROM YOU, THEIR PUMPS WERE DOWN. I REALLY WAS UNCOMFORTABLE DRIVING AROUND THE HOOD, LOOKING FOR GAS. I TOLD THE GIRL CHECKING MY CAR BACK IN THAT THE PUMPS WERE DOWN... SHE DID NOT GIVE A CRAP! SHE SAID THE CHARGE WAS $9.99 PER GALLON! ARE YOU KIDDING ME... TALK ABOUT STICKING IT TO PEOPLE! I ONLY NEEDED ONE HALF A TANK, ON A SMALL CAR AND NU CAR HAD THE AUDACITY TO CHARGE ME $63.61 (MORE) DOLLARS!
SO MY (ONE) DAY CAR RENTAL USING HOTWIRE AND NU CAR RENTAL COST ME $238.72... FOR ONE DAY!
Be very cautious when renting for the MCO Orlando rental office. We turned in our rental on the 19th of April around 6:15 p.m. or so. Our flight left at 9:00 p.m. The next day I get an email that my credit card had an additional charge. They were trying to charge me an additional $361.82 for an additional day. They doctored the paperwork from the original agreement to say I returned it on 4/20/23. I provided all the documentation to them that showed I left on the 19th. In addition, there were 5 other people with me when we turned the car in the. The airline confirmed we were on the flight so we couldn't have turned in the car on the 20th. After I provided all of the documentation to show that someone on their end was committing fraud on my credit card they have not responded back to any of my emails. I have worked with my credit card company to reverse the charges. They also try to sell you the daily toll pass at $13.00 a day. We said no and we paid the tolls as we went. The agent at the counter when we checked in was drilling me on why I had full coverage on a 2007 vehicle ( you have to show your insurance). He said don't you have a new vehicle. What does that matter? I have full coverage. If you do choose to rent from them, don't just use the ipad to document damage. Make someone come out to the vehicle. Our vehicle had damage all the way around and stains in the inside. When you return it, make someone come out to review the vehicle and get paper documents with the date on it that you returned the car. If you have someone with you, video from your phone you returning the car. This has been nothing but a nightmare. Thank god my credit company sent me a note right away. I was lucky I had all of my receipts from the 19th.
WARNING! DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY! SCAM! I booked the car through Orbitz, thought I was getting a good deal. When I got to the airport, it took me 20 minutes to figure out how to even get to the rental location. You have to read the fine print to learn you take a HOTEL shuttle to the Westin (out of the airport) and you would find the kiosk in the lobby. When I got there, THE KIOSK WAS CLOSED! CLOSED at 9pm! I was stranded and needed to drive an hour + to get to my hotel in Anaheim. I couldn't get anyone on the phone and didn't know what to do. The security guards at the Westin told me THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME! WTF? Someone recommended I go up the block and rent from Fox's car rental. In was charged $420 for that rental. And I prepaid with NU $177, which I could not get back because even after calling every day, I couldn't get anyone on the phone. The whole operation is SCAM. Orbitz should not do business with this company. I tried to dispute the charge, but could not get my money back because of the fine print that says they do not give refunds. This was not a detail Orbtiz provided when I booked the car originally... If anything, this information should have been emphasized before I officially booked the trip. Now I am out $177- This company seriously takes advantage of customers and the third part booking line, and takes zero responsibility for their lack of transparency. STAY AWAY! STAY AWAY! STAY AWAY! SCAM. SCAM. SCAM. SCAM.
This was, without question, the worst car rental experience in Maui. Priceline should be held accountable for affiliating with such an unprofessional company. Despite having a confirmed reservation, the car I booked was already rented to someone else—a complete breach of trust. I was offered a substitute vehicle that was dirty, smelled awful, and covered in scratches. The customer service was insincere, dismissive, and clearly not interested in resolving the issue. To make matters worse, after returning the car in better condition than I received it—clean, fueled, and spotless—I was still slapped with a bogus $30 charge. This operation is a disgrace, and no customer should have to tolerate such deception and disrespect.
