MaxSold Reviews Summary

Maxsold exhibits a mixed reputation, with positive feedback highlighting efficient communication, smooth auction processes, and satisfactory customer experiences for both buyers and sellers. Many users appreciate the value they find in auctions and commend the professionalism of the staff. However, significant concerns arise regarding misrepresentation of items, lost goods, and communication issues, particularly during pickups. Customers also express dissatisfaction with the handling of complaints and the company's response to service failures. Overall, while Maxsold has a solid base of satisfied users, addressing operational shortcomings and enhancing customer support could improve their reputation further.

For the last couple of years I bought several items from Maxsold but everything changed.
On July 19.2020 I went to Auction #******* which was located 5 Sawgrass street, Jackson NJ ******* to pick the items that I won. When I got there I met the Maxsold rep "Audrey" and gave her my receipt. She looked for the staff but she couldn't find them. The owner was at the site so she asked the owner where are the staff. The owner said that she had a handyman working on the house and he probably took the items.

The Maxsold rep "Audrey" apologized to me and she told me when I get home to fill up the refund form and I will get 100% refund. After driving an hour to get back home I filled up the form and submitted to Maxsold.

Next day I called my credit card to let them know that I will be getting credit from Maxsold so they don't charge me any interest. The amount of purchase was $19.62.

Three days later I tried to login to my account to put a bid for an item and I received the message that my account was suspended. I submitted the form twice for reinstatement but they were denied. I called Maxsold several times but no manager was available.
"Your account was suspended due to a charge back that was initiated for a purchase you had made with us. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the suspension we are unable to reinstate your account.

We hope you will find other opportunities with other organizations, but we cannot continue to conduct business with you due to the risks inherent with having you as a member of our MaxSold Community.
Regards,

So if a seller decides to cloak an item as a rare find only to have it turn into a reprinted item, Maxsold said it is FINE for someone to do that and it is BUYER beware? I have spent thousands of dollars on this site and have never been taken, but this one time I need them to step up, they don't. Well MAXSOLD I am done spending my money on your site if that is how you are going to do BUSINESS. STAY AWAY from this circus if you have any issues.

I HAVE PURCHASED MANY TIMES FROM MAXSOLD AND HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY BUT RECENTLY I HAVE FOUND THAT MANY OF THEIR DISTRIBUTIONS (CARLISLE, MA) ARE NOT ACCURATE AND IF YOU CALL THEM ON IT THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIND IT. MANY OF THESE ITEMS ARE BEING SOLD BY RESELLERS. I ALSO PURCHASED A BACCARAT DECANTER AND FOUND 6 CHUNKS BROKEN OFF AND THEY DID NOT MENTION IT WAS DAMAGED. WITH THE VIRUS THEY ARE WRAPPING EVERYTHING SO YOU CAN NOT CHECK IT AT PICKUP, THEN THEY DENIED MY REFUND CLAIM. I WILL NOT BE PURCHASING AGAIN.

I do not recommend collaborating with them because it is the second time that it happens to me to find big lies in the description of the online auction product and reality (last time they said that the vase has a height of 48 inches but in reality it was only aprox. Half). Lack of seriousness characterizes them

It's disappointing that we provided this customer an unsatisfactory experience. Although requests made after pickup are considered on a case by case basis (as they are outside the agreed to terms and conditions of bidding noted below), we are committed to being fair to all our customers. Without more information and/or the completion of a refund form however, we cannot support this customer’s disappointment. They should reach out to support@maxsold.com to provide more clarity on their specific situation. In this case, it may be easy for us to support given it appears to be a measurement issue.
With that said, the following attempts to highlight the process, performance rate, and method used to avoid disappointment for all potential buyers on Maxsold's platform.
Maxsold has two models - Maxsold Managed and Seller Managed. In one offering Maxsold is never on site and therefore has no visibility of the items sold. In the other, our teams catalog and thus have a bit more awareness of the items. That said, regardless of who is cataloging, both honest mistakes and dishonest actions can occur - thus, Maxsold uses a transparent claims process that has worked for centuries in the live auction world - specifically, the buyer is to inspect the item at pickup in full view of the Seller/auction staff and/or other buyers and make a claim (partial/full refund) if the item is found to be in a condition other than what was described before leaving the site. In both models, the process is the same and is outlined in the bidder terms (www.maxsold.com/terms) and on the buyer invoice:
CLAIMS: ENSURE YOU INSPECT items at pickup (and preview if available) and IMMEDIATELY inform the MaxSold team (or Seller if Seller Managed) of any issues related to mis-cataloging of condition (remembering that you are purchasing used items in AS IS WHERE IS condition). By departing from the pickup site you acknowledge that you have all your items and that you are satisfied with them and/or have brought up issues with the Lead on site. NO CLAIMS ARE PERMITTED AFTER REMOVING ITEMS FROM THE PREMISES as condition issues cannot be validated once items are released into your possession. If required, bring an expert to validate purchases at pickup. We are not responsible for the acts or omissions of the Seller.
This ensures fairness and transparency to both the buyer and the seller. When a buyer accepts an item without inspection, they are waiving any potential claim issues as, once the item leaves, there’s no way for Maxsold or the seller to know when the (potential) issue was created. Was it lost in transit? Damaged on the way home? Or is it someone trying to take advantage of the process (by ignoring a transparent opportunity to make a claim).
Bidders that accept and live by the terms love that the as is where is used goods start at $1 with the highest bidder winning. It’s a fair and transparent model for those who can accept and abide by the terms and conditions laid out (and agreed to) prior to bidding. To date, Maxsold’s error rate in selling used goods is unmatched in both the used and retail industry at less than 2% of all goods sold.
MaxSold continues to reinvest all funds made in the pursuit of its vision to Sell. Everything. Simply for downsizing and estate clients without judgement:

Sideline con artists
April 27, 2020

After bidders came to pick up their lots, one of their employees who managed the event told me she, Claire (with an Irish brogue) and Tammy could help sell on private consignment, my deceased brother's 43 watches and other related items which Claire said MaxSold wouldn't sell due to their small size. She sent me an email listing all of the items and her (Claire's) fees for replacing watch batteries, prep for selling the items on EBay, Mercado, etc., and mailing/shipping costs. A list of when EBay would reimburse her account was also included. Needless to say, she was never heard from again even though I sent two emails and left two voicemails for her without any response. When I contacted MaxSold they said she wasn't supposed to do that and they would speak to her. I haven't heard anything since and am filing a claim in small claims court. This is the last thing I needed during this grief period. I agree with Mel F that this is not a good deal for sellers.

It's disappointing that this Seller seems to be having a disappointing experience after completion of our contracted services. Although we appreciate the trouble seems to be with people who work for us, the Seller seems to have contracted them to perform services outside ours. We have attempted to reach out to the Seller a number of times to better understand the situation, but whatever this situation is, it is not a Maxsold service nor would we have suggested or supported it had we been made aware.

We hope the Seller is able to resolve their concerns. We are still willing to understand the situation in an attempt to support them, however, I am not certain there is more we can do for them given whatever they have contracted separately for is outside our scope of services.

I have been so impressed with MaxSold from my first contact until they deposited the check in my account. They have been responsive to all my questions and concerns as well as efficient in executing a large sale with a large collection of dishware, art, furniture. Nothing broken or damaged. They set up in one day and came back a week later. People came in one at a time. Smart way to clear your home! I recommend MaxSold highly! M. Feinstein

While we did accomplish getting items sold, we would have done better, to have done it ourselves or donated to charity and received a receipt for the donation. Staff on site was okay - photographs were subpar at best, definitions (I believe) were part of the reason items either didn't sell or were so underbid. Items were taken that were marked not for sale, supervision of the buyers by some allowed items not bid on to be taken. I approached the day of the sale that one item should not have been sold, for personal reasons - they did NOTHING to help me retrieve the small (family) heirloom. They knew who bought it. They could have made a small quick call and all would have been resolved - but they did nothing to assist. Use them if you have to but be aware items will go but maybe not at the value they deserve.

In addition to taking feedback from our Seller’s and doing our best to make it right in their eyes, it’s important to provide the following information for transparency for others that may be reading this. It’s an unfortunate reality that the market doesn’t always pay a seller what a seller thinks is a fair price for individual things (or perhaps even in aggregate) under a competitive auction model (this is true for any auction company). Maxsold does its very best to provide both a detailed outline of our process (www.maxsold.com/sell) and share our past auction data (www.maxsold.com/past) to prepare sellers for the realities of the market when items must be sold. Sellers have both financial and emotional attachments to items and so our job is to sell only those items they need to part with - typically items that will soon be a liability due to a move / sale of real estate / etc. as selling the items avoids additional and/or ongoing, logistical and/or storage costs. Our model, which includes selling everything to the highest bidder regardless of price, guarantees our sellers a finite and transparent experience that passes the logistical burden onto the buyers as they MUST arrive and remove, with their own resources, all of their purchases from the sellers location during a short time window agreed to by the Seller. This saves hundreds (if not thousands) in labor alone.

Although we are confident that a 3rd party professional appraiser would agree that our results were fair value (and that we offset even more significant disposal fees than they incurred), we are ultimately sorry that our seller is disappointed in this case.

https://maxsold.maxsold.com/auction/abbotsford-british-columbia-canada-estate-sale-online-auction-clearbrook-road-21872/bidgallery/

Where other solutions try to control prices while having no control over time of sale, we give the seller control of time while giving up control of price to market competition. For people who have items that will soon cost them to hold onto, this is the most economic (and green) solution to the problem of getting things removed on their timelines (typically for a much larger value proposition such as a closing real estate transaction or avoiding ongoing rental/lease costs).

Regarding missing items, we do try to emphasize that the Seller MUST segregate all items not in the auction to avoid them going into the auction and/or being removed (by accident or otherwise) with items in the auction. All Sellers have the opportunity to both review the catalog prior to go live as well as being reminded several times before the pickup to segregate valuables to avoid disappointment. We are ultimately sorry this happened to our Seller. It’s a known risk that we do everything we can to mitigate through communication on Seller responsibilities.

We are re-sellers and after several years and over $30,000 purchased via Maxsold we have filed for divorce over several incidence with the last 2 auctions with one giving wrong location and address (33 miles) resulting in over $ 300 wasted day and $250.00 for the purchased lot not received and the other not having several items as paid for for another $250.00.
We're done here not because of the strict policies but because of the very poor support and communication.

It's disappointing that we provided this customer an unsatisfactory experience. However, without more information and/or the completion of a refund form however, we cannot support this customer with a satisfactory resolution. They should reach out to support@maxsold.com to provide more clarity on their specific situation.
That said, it is strange that this customer indicates they were sent 33 miles in the wrong direction as this would suggest a problem not just for this customer but for another ~40-80 buyers that are typically part of any given auction pickup. In a rare situation like this, we would typically have made concessions to compensate for such an error on our part.

The $100. Discount & $50 to refer an auction to Maxsold applies ONLY IF the auction brings in over $1000. They do not make this clear during the sales call or contract negotiation. The claim that who ever referred is responsible to inform this is reprehensible. Especially for the auctions resulting less than $1000 the discount would help offset the cost of their fee. This is rather disappointing.

After years as a buyer, we've held two sales now. And just signed up for our 3rd! Unlike many other things, this MaxSold platform runs exactly as described... and you receive immediate support should you require any assistance. Recommended the Seller Managed Sale v. the MaxSold Managed as it's easy to create your catalog... you can do it at your leisure... and it's easy to manage the pickup. Plus, MaxSold staff is there (even on weekends) to help over the phone on pickup day. Best way I have found to sell off an estate, or sell down slow moving inventory. As with any auction, you must have realistic expectations of prices achieved. MaxSold twice now exceeded my overall expectation. Highly recommend this service!

Don't walk, RUN away from this company! No consideration for the seller. Ridiculously low bids accepted. SELLER BEWARE. You CANNOT withdraw an item after the auction begins Give your stuff to charity before going with them. Super high cost to the seller PLUS a percentage of the 'sales'... Disgusting, parasitic scavengers enabling bottom-feeding 'buyers'. STAY AWAY

What a wonderful deal!
February 1, 2020

I had already donated collections, mowers, power tools, furniture etc. before I knew about MaxSold. To my surprise what was left earned enough to pay for the subsequent haul away of what was trash and donation worthy. I couldn't be happier and intend to tell everyone about the service's success.

We bid on a nice wood dining table and 8 chairs and won with a $140 bid. When we went to pick up the item we were about 1/2 hour late. The seller refused to let us take the table citing we were not in time for the pick up window. We called MaxSold and they told us the rules is that if you are not there to pick up your item on time you forfeit it and do not get a refund. However, they went on to say that if the seller agrees to let us have the item it would be OK. So now we go back to the seller and he informed us that he would not release the table and chairs. He said that it was worth $10,000 and he was not letting it go for $140. I agree the table was worth far more than $140; but get real; $10,000?
Now the review is not negative against MaxSold because they have posted the terms an rules and they were willing to bend in this instance. It was the seller that was very greedy and heartless. So all this above is to say, be on time to pick up your item and read all the rules and terms with MaxSold

We are so happy that we hired Maxsold to auction off my Dad's estate. They were professional, friendly and organized. Prior to hiring Maxsold we went to two separate Maxsold auctions on which we won items. One was self managed and at pick up was Chaos! So many people were in the place at one time anyone could have taken anything! The second was Maxsold managed. The people working it escorted buyers through the house and if there wasn't a runner available you had to wait outside until someone was available. This ensured no damage to the property and that buyers only picked up the item they bid on. Our experience was great, most things were sold and it was amazing to see the difference of a overflowing house full of stuff to an empty house within hours.
We read the contract and knew what the costs were and felt that the fees were more than fair given the amount of work it would have been to achieve the same result ourselves. Thanks Maxsold for an enjoyable experience. The London team and their friends are great!

I have no complaints about the professionalism and courtesy of your staff: assigning and photographing lots and handling the pickup schedule. However, several customers told me they were still engaged in bidding for the most valuable items in the auction and that they were cut off in process and very upset. I am extremely distressed that you stopped the bidding and did not afford me the opportunity to receive a better price for these items. On another note I wish there had been a better tutorial on how to modify//split lots. For example there were cases such as where several nice silverplate pieces were included with assorted trays and the picture did not make the silver items clear. I didn't comprehend that I could have split the items into two lots. Another lot of primarily silver was highly sought after and had many bids so I most likely would have realized a better price separating out the silver items. Most of my changes to the texts were handled well, but in some cases you did not correct spelling or add other useful explanatory descriptions.

We are sorry to hear that bidders reported to the Seller that bidding was somehow cut short. We unfortunately were not informed of this on the night of closing and we have no other data to suggest there was a system issue. We do know that, from time to time, issues do occur at the user end that deny them from bidding (i. E. personal internet/computer issues, bidder not providing their credit card information, bidders not following the ‘live view’ of an auction in closing, etc.). From the auction results, it’s clear that there was extended bidding on a number of items (as indicated by the ‘bidding was extended’ statement next to the “Closed” note - see link below).
Based on the bidding attendance (134 bidders) and the average lot value ($66+), this auction significantly exceeded a typical auction result. The average lot value also suggests the lotting was optimal for the mix of items in the sale (breaking up the lots would likely have resulted in less overall competition based on our experience and the data available).

If anyone is interested in seeing the results of this auciton for themselves, they are welcome to review at: https://maxsold.maxsold.com/auction/potomac-maryland-usa-downsizing-online-auction-streamview-court-20252/bidgallery/

We are sorry if this Seller felt more could have been done to increase the success of this auction. We will take their feedback into consideration in the hopes we can further improve our process and wish them all the best.

A MaxSold Managed Auction is a DISASTER with respect to staff, lot sizes, pickup scenarios and commission fees... so basically EVERYTHING is a problem.

They made the lots so large that no one would bid high since they would have been stuck with many items they could do nothing with. They will not do single item auction due to "time it takes for return on their investment in preparing the auction" - i. E. Everything is rushed and moved along if you have alot of stuff

Pickup was a disaster as well, items left behind or refunds giving for miscataloged items by MaxSold. MaxSold gave the money back and left the bidder keep the item for free without my permission or approval.

Commission fees are way above the going rate for other auctioneers or online auction facilitators. We sold $5000 worth of stuff and MaxSold took $2450 of that, for who for what?

I would have been better off with a yard sale and/or facebook marketplace

Response: It's disappointing that this customer had an unsatisfactory experience - should they decide to provide more details on who they are / which auction was theirs we would be happy to follow up with them and attempt to make it right in their eyes - if they choose, they could reach out via support@maxsold.com. Certainly, some of their feedback doesn’t seem to fit who we are so we aren’t 100% certain this person was actually a client of ours:
Examples:
“... they would have been stuck with many items they could do nothing with” - we don’t hold inventory or remove items so I’m not sure who we would have been stuck with items in any way

“They will not do single item auction” - we aren’t sure exactly what this is referring to. We have done both single item auctions (i. E. storage locker full of contents as 1 item) as well as sold items individually when there is merit to do so (typically items that will sell for $50 or more on their own like TVs, Tool chest, vehicle, piece of furniture, lladro figurine, etc.).

“Maxsold gave the money back and let the bidder keep the item” - if an item is refunded (partial or otherwise), the loss is taken by both MaxSold and the seller and full refunds would typically have the item left behind (unless the seller requested otherwise).

Finally, it is true that Sellers who are savvy at negotiation and who have the time to sell 1000s of items on their own time through direct channels can see more top line value on occasion, but the effort typically takes months or years to execute (so if time is a constraint, it’s not a viable option). Sellers who hire us for what we do have time as a constraint that will be expensive to get more of (not a resource that is cheaply available).

For clarity on MaxSold’s fees, they are outlined here: www.maxsold.com/fees. Depending on the model chosen and the gross auction results, the fees can exceed the proceeds (a typical) or result in some net proceeds to the seller (typical). At the end of the day, MaxSold does not decide what a Seller needs to sell - our job is to recover value on whatever the Seller needs to let go of (typically as a result of an estate or downsize) in the time given to us by the Seller - this unique to our service as others providers in our space simply will not serve 80% of the market because they do not have ~$8,000 or more worth of inventory to sell (the typical break-even value that enables other providers to conduct a sale).

As part of our core value of transparency, the results of all our auctions are available for review and should this seller inform us of which auction is there, we would be happy to publish the results in this response (as we have with all other responses where the seller identifies themselves). We do this as we feel our results are fair value under the constraints outlined above (that said, we are ultimately sorry that our seller is disappointed in this case).

Where other solutions try to control prices while having no control over time of sale, we give the seller control of time while giving up control of price to market competition. For people who have items that will soon cost them to hold onto, this is the most economic (and green) solution to the problem of getting things removed on their timelines (typically to support a much larger value proposition such as a closing real estate transaction or avoiding ongoing rental/lease costs).

The Ottawa Maxsold team were so professional and friendly! Their photographs and descriptions of items for sale were very well done. Most items were sold and the pick up process could not have gone more smoothly. Notably, every effort was made in order that there was no damage to the house. The staff recognized that selling the contents of my parents' home was rather difficult for me personally and could not have been more supportive and understanding. We had some fun! Will definitely recommend the Ottawa Maxsold team.

I got into the process late - did my own photography and descriptions - and still managed to sell 96% of items in less than one week. The interface is a little tricky to learn, but once you get a feel for it, things move quickly. MaxSold provides helpful support throughout the entire process as well. Best of all, the buyers come and pick up items - no need to move anything (except to help). My advice: Give yourself ample time, as presumably the longer your stuff is visible online, the higher the bidding could go; organize items into lots that make sense; use a proper DLSR camera, not your phone; and write accurate descriptions, not flowery overstatements. Anyway, it worked for me, the first-timer. I recommend MaxSold thoroughly.
