The overall reputation of the company is significantly marred by customer dissatisfaction, primarily due to poor handling of items, resulting in extensive damage and loss. While some customers commend the promptness of the claims process and the friendliness of delivery staff, these positives are overshadowed by widespread reports of unprofessional service, significant delays in accessing stored items, and misleading pricing practices. Many customers express frustration over hidden fees and inadequate communication regarding changes in terms. This pattern suggests a critical need for the company to enhance operational transparency and improve the quality of service to regain customer trust.

I spent thousands storing my belongings with them over multiple years and when I received my items back EVERY single piece of furniture was destroyed. Not damaged, destroyed. Chair legs snapped, cabinets smashed and my couch was so moldy that it had to be thrown away because of the smell.
The damage is well in excess of $10,00 however the team only offered me $700 in damages which isn't just insulting its illegal. I was never offered the option for additional insurance like many other people.
I'm now heading into the weekend with no furniture so am required to rent some in the meantime whilst this issue is resolved. I'll be sure to add this expense as part of our ongoing dispute.
Whats worse is that their team said that movers were INTENTIONALLY damaging items when they heard that MakeSpace was being acquired by Clutter.
Please feel free to reach out to me for any specific as if the matter isn't resolved in the next few days I'll be filing a class action lawsuit.
I scheduled a pick up twice with Makespace and both times they did not pick up! No answer to their contact through chat, no answer by phone. Never using them again
I have stored my belongings with Makespace for 3 years. Things were fine for the first 2 years. Then, Makespace merged with Clutter. They sent an email that had links to long terms and conditions that basically said that they can change the pricing whenever and however they want. They increased my rate 25%. But what is worse is that they changed the charge for my final delivery of items from $59 to $4000. This is robbery. I had a multi-year agreement with Makespace to deliver the items at the low rate, which was part of why I signed. Then they changed it in a sneaky manner, with a long email and links to vague language, and claimed that I had agreed to the terms by continuing to use their service. This is not ok. Do not use them.
My experience with MakeSpace was awful. Their whole thing is they take photos of your stuff. They photographed my stuff AFTER they wrapped it up so this aspect is useless and they wouldn't photograph my stuff once it was in. Also their "self retrieval " is not self; rather it has to be a licensed mover who retrieves it! And they raised their prices and didn't contact me. Truly not what they represent!'n DO NOT USE THEM!
NOT RECOMMENDED. "My worst storage experience..."
First because THEY LOST ONE OF MY ITEMS, after storing my things for more than a year with them, paying more than 220 dollars monthly for less than 5' x10', mostly to store my bed, now I don't have a bed. To lose items seems natural to them, they are unorganized and their communication is not straightforward, after filling surveys and talking to around 10 people, they finally offered me 53 dollars back for a bed, because I had contracted the Basic Insurance Plan. Their policies, and that plan specifically, are abusive. Don't choose that plan, because they DO LOSE THINGS, and if they lose something valuable they pay you for the weight of it. Even though some of the employees I talked to recognized it was not fair, the company did not not take full responsibility for the loss.
Second, the service must seem like a good choice when you are in a rush or emergency, but it IS NOT. They try to sell you on their advertisements and web page that their service will be for less of the price of traditional self-storage, on the fact that is not true, they are much MORE EXPENSIVE at the end, they are unreliable, and give you the run-around when there's an issue. Much better to call for independent movers and store your things in a regular Storage in the city where you have access and control over your things, so there is not chance for them to be lost. It will be cheaper than their service in the end. Now I have my things at Public Storage and I pay 150 dollars, against the 220 they charged me for the same space. Independent movers charge you the same or less than the 400 they charge for the moving back.
Third, they have very BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. They partnered with a different company who takes care of the claims. I had to talk and email around 10 different people, always being me who takes the initiative even though they made the mistake, sometimes they didn't even answer and I had to write again. I talked to Alexander, Jereme, Sirena, Michenlangelo, Louis, Deonte and so on, never the same person, so I needed to explain the issue several times, and I lost, on top of my item, a lot of time. Some of the people I talked to recognized that there was a problem and an unfair resolution and sent the info to a supervisor, but their response was the same, it was kind of like talking to a machine.
The workers are all very nice HOWEVER, the people who moved and packed my items seemed like young college kids. I stored my items with them from 2020-2022, two years! When I finally moved my items out of storage, so many precious items of mine were lost or damaged! Terrible! Would not recommend to anyone. Avoid if you can. They may seem nice, but they lack professionalism and care.
1. They are extremely overpriced.
2. I was told that I am unable to pick up my own stuff due to "liability" reasons. As a result, I would have to hire a licensed third party moving company to retrieve my own stuff. There is still a fee that I would have to pay them despite doing absolutely nothing. I guess this is so that I end up using their delivery service and paying the delivery fee. What a POS service.
There is virtually no way to get your things out if you need to. The company claims they use and paints a picture as if your items are moved around by robots etc. (think amazon warehouse), but this is false. All they have is a website with a backend application that stores pictures of your items to give that impression.
It's been two weeks and I can still not set an appointment to get my things out.
I used this company and I had minimal stuff in storage from my mom's house after she passed. A glass coffee table, love seat, a tv stand, and pullout couch. They broke everything except the pullout couch. They did reach out right after the delivery telling me that they would pay if I could find the same items or close to it they would pay. The furniture was only 4 months old before she passed. They offered to pay but what they should do is make offers according to what they find online. Why should I have to look for it they broke it not me. My items had sentimental value. I was in prison 10yrs. And only had 4months with both my parents. Died a week apart. They were supposed to make an offer but they never emailed me back. I know that I was so upset. I waited for an email but they didn't email me again. I'm not going to call or email if I said my piece. They should have to do the footwork to be able to offer a decent payoff. Why I have to do anything. I deleted the pictures I should have kept them but it hurts too much. Love seat broke arm. Table. Glass. Broke in half. Tv stand edge of the tv stand broke. Honestly I would have never wrote this if they would have rectified the situation. Almost 3 months is long enough for a call or email. I wish I would have looked here before using the company. I won't make that mistake again.
The company sent 2 clowns to return my property from storage. Neither one was competent. The first guy spent 5 minutes taking a break after the first trip of carrying 1 bag to my apartment. They were complaining the whole time about it being a walk up (hello?! It's New York, I'm sure this wasn't the first walk-up they've done) and the fact that I had books that they had to carry.
Things only got worse. They refused to take the moving blankets, and now I know why. ONE-THIRD of my property was destroyed. I filed a claim for just over $5,000, and the company reimbursed me for $1,000. What a joke. They destroyed my property and barely compensated me for the damage.
DO NOT USE THEM EVER. HORRIBLE WORST MOVING EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE.
I was calling from overseas. That I wanted to merge my storage to the Tampa location last August of 2021. Then an agent said they are full to capacity and cannot pickup any more storage at that location. Tryes aganing while back in the staesMarch. 2022. Same question and same answers. One agent said make an apointment and she will have them pick up my boxes. Then called to give the address of the location for pick up and denied once again. There is no space at the Tampa location to put my boxes when there is ample space in the warehouse storage. Some thing is very wierd with these people trying yo run a business. I have suffered great stress behind this situation.
Awesome job Cory S and Martin D!
Will use them again if needed and will recommend them to everyone.
Thank you!
One happy Customer
I received 9 boxes from storage. A lamp base was damaged and the shade was smashed. Also a wire magazine rack was crushed. BUT, although this is on par for what I have read in other reviews, I immediately put in a claim and they got back to me asap and offered me the full amount for damage and made the process so incredibly easy. Thanks to Eve and the team. Even tho I had damage, unlike a lot of the bad reviews I've seen, they were right on top of making it right for me. A+ for customer service.
I rented storage in the Philadelphia area, after the movers took three hours to move 20 items, I was accused of making a pass at the African American worker with dreadlocks because I asked his co-worker, Joshua, for a pen. I was surprised and confused, and I felt unsafe in my own home. When I asked what made him believe I'd make a pass because I asked for a pen, he answered because he's married and kept repeating himself. One coworker waited in the van while the one with dreads came upstairs and started a confrontation. I quickly signed the document on the iPad and shut the door! I didn't report the event to Makespace because I was concerned they might harm my belongings if I did. I recently discovered that you will be charged to pick up your OWN items in order to get your items out of storage. I've realized that Makespace Storage is overcharging customers DO NOT USE THIS STORAGE unless you WANT to FEEL uncomfortable in your own home and don't mind being overcharged!
Do not use unless it's a last resort. - unless you're happy to lose all your valuable items with no support and pay a host of hidden fees on removal!
We had an awful experience with MakeSpace. Whilst initial pick up was OK (although it took them 6 hours to empty a 2-bedroom apartment that we had pre-packed!) the state of the items and "customer support" we have had has been awful.
As you can see from the images below, many of our items were returned completely broken, or unusable. I have no idea what the stain is on the mattress and Makespace have offered no help in clarifying it. What is not visible from the pictures is that a number of our items, including two televisions, have mysteriously vanished. We were told they had found one and it would be sent to us, only to find out a few days later (by which time it should have arrived and I had to ask Makespace where it was) that actually it was damaged and couldn't be sent. Our other TV box was opened, per the image, and the TV replaced with two sofa cushions and the fractured mirror.
Unfortunately, that is not the end of our trouble. Whilst we wanted our items moved out on the 24th October, despite booking on 10/05 we were unable to get a slot until 11/1. Makespace decided that this meant we must be charged for storage for the full month of November as they are a "monthly subscription service". We also found out on 11/1 that they had suddenly change the pricing of the move-out service in September, with no communication or warning, and so were stuck with a bill of an additional $600 with no warning - the money was just removed from our bank account.
SCAM Company
I used MakeSpace during the pandemic to store my stuff as I was unsure of where I would end up after it was all over. It all started with the pickup back in 2020 where the crew was 4 hours late and it took 5 hours to pack up a 600 sq foot apartment. I finally settled on where I was going to live so I made an appointment to pick up my stuff at the warehouse. As they are unloading my stuff into a truck, it came to my attention that my dresser was missing and it had not been seen since 2020. The crew promised me as soon as they found it, it would be shipped to me out of state as it was their fault. 8 weeks later and I still don't have that dresser. They have been telling me for 4 weeks now, we are going to ship it but now they are basically holding my dresser hostage. I have had to call every day for the last four weeks to get an update and never received updates until I asked to speak with a supervisor every time I called. They also broke a piece off my tv stand and it is no longer usable. The TV is almost $600 and I can't replace the stand but yet they want to offer an embarrassing $74. I have now threatened legal action as it pertains to my dresser. It is the responsibility of MakeSpace to find a shipping company to get my dresser to Texas. I would never recommend this company as they make promises they can't keep and continue to lie to me. This seems to be a continued problem from the list of complaints I have read. Not to mention every one of my boxes from the warehouse looked like they had been tossed around and my stuff was all torn up and scratched up. They should be embarrassed to be in business yet alone taking peoples money.
After our atrocious experience, I would liken MakeSpace to a criminal organization.
My girlfriend and I were taking the first big steps toward a life together - investing in long-term furniture and moving into an apartment together - and MakeSpace was there to undo each step we took, ruin our property and our sense of security, and seriously endanger the fabric of our relationship.
* Upon moving into our apartment, we were informed of a multi-month waiting time to have her property dropped off to us - This means she didn't have brushes, dishes, and of course any of our furniture; So for the first few months of living in our apartment we had to waste tons of money on household items we already owned as well as sleep on an old mattress and have poor options for sitting (i. E. WORKING in the COVID world!); Basically, MakeSpace held all of our belongings hostage
* Once our property arrived at last, the bed frame we made a big investment in to be our marital and long-term bed was smashed into about sixteen pieces and wrapped in taped up blankets. My girlfriend shed quite a few tears, I spent a great deal of time getting disposing of hundreds of pounds of smashed wood and tape and blankets, and we continued sleeping on our mattress; Eventually, MakeSpace offered a few hundred dollars in damages; We were at this point thousands of dollars down in property and expenses due to MakeSpace's absolute f*ckups, including the dollars we had paid to them of course!
* Finally, upon sorting through our things from MakeSpace, we realized they had lost a set of screws and such. While small in size, I don't have to explain that this also made our large investment dining table useless…
As I consider it now, we paid money to this cruel organization to essentially steal and destroy thousands of dollars of property from us. I will feel less safe next time a moving process approaches and feel generally helpless in what I thought was a judicious business environment in the US. No. Organized Crime is Alive and Well.
My girlfriend and I are making our way out of a rough patch and feeling better <3
I am writing my very first review just out of frustration with this service.
Why would you pay a monthly fee to not get your stuff back? This storage unit is the biggest scam ever. You pay a monthly fee to never get your stuff back, or else to get things damaged. Moreover, the customer service is truly awful if you do lose your stuff, you will get the runaround multiple times.
I stored my stuff with makespace for only four months. At the end of the four months, I pick my stuff at the warehouse (not delivery) - so far so good. The next day, we drive to Nevada with our things on Labor Day. That *day* I realize we are missing one huge wardrobe box (which they convinced us to buy, since it would be less likely our stuff was lost - oh, the irony) that contained all of our most used things - it was the last box we packed up.
I tried calling that day but couldn't get a hold of anyone because of the holiday. No worries, I called the next day and said that a box was missing, it must be right there since we were the last customers out that day and I was calling the first thing the next day. They said they'd look for it and get back to me.
I called several times that first week, and they continuously said they didn't get any updates from the warehouse. But, they told me not to worry.
The next week, I call again and they said they hadn't even started looking for it because I hadn't submitted a claim. Okay, I didn't realize I had to submit a claim, so I submitted one. All the while, they were not even able to provide an inventory of all the things they had taken since, in theory, they had "given it back to me". But, I tried to just remember from memory all the stuff they had taken from me.
Fast forward almost TWO MONTHS LATER, and they said they could not find the box. I must have called at least ten times during those months, and the customer service was awful: they were slow to get back to me, and what's worse, they could never even confirm that someone had gone in the warehouse to look for the box. They then offered $200 in compensation for a box that contained at LEAST $500 worth of stuff, most frustratingly, it's stuff that's hard to replace. I have tried calling multiple times and I just get the most frustrating customer service response: I understand you want these things and they are hard to replace. We will keep looking for them. (Yeah, sure). I'm almost positive they haven't looked for it.
Why would I pay for storage for things I'm never going to get back? It's true what they say, you pay for what you get. Don't use this service, buyer be warned.
Very very bad service from this pick up and storage company. They are do not take the struggle out of storage, it is a nightmare. I moved my stuff from a 5x 10 unit and their facility. They charged me $210 for a 10x 10 unit not mention the exorbitant appointment/pick fee. How did my stuff suddenly increase in size? They do not respond to enquiries, very unprofessional. I tied to them for 3 months, what did i get myself into this mess?
My initial experience with MakeSpace was pretty good, when they picked up my items. However, upon trying to get access to my property stored with MakeSpace, I was told there would be a month-long delay -- and I'd be charged for the extra time.
At no point has MakeSpace indicated such long delays. Their TOS indicates they aim to return property within 72 hours of requests, and my initial conversations with sales and customer support echoed that. But now, without any prior warning (like an email notification, for example) I'm told that I'm unable to access my own property for over a month.
This has led me to lose significant money as I have no access to my own furniture and other items, which I needed within a matter of a couple of weeks -- not a month.
Considering how unreliable this company is, and the fact they take no responsibility for their failure to provide reasonable service, I recommend using a regular storage company where you have control over access to your unit.
Answer: Posing as they are legit, operating like they are a scam.
Answer: They had good reviews, but now their company is a diaster.
