I stored my 3 bedroom home in November with MakeSpace and just had my belongings returned in July. The initial move went well and the movers were great. Fast forward to July and the drop-off made by MakeSpace...
So much of my furniture was damaged when it was returned. My dresser that was in perfect condition was completely destroyed and was refused upon delivery because it was not salvageable. My leather couch and loveseat, end table and a bed were also damaged. They lost a set of bedrails that make the bed essentially useless. Also, 2 boxes of my kitchen pans/dishes were lost in storage. I have filed a claim but it doesn't seem that all of the damaged items will be covered because I didn't purchase their additional insurance. In my opinion, everything should be covered due to the carelessness and total disregard for my belongings. I was told it will take at least 2 weeks for them to try and "find" the missing items and then after that timeframe, they can be added to my damage claim as well. That claim will take a minimum of 4 weeks. Even though I provided pictures and documentation supporting the damage. After all the damage that was done to my belongings, it would have been cheaper to hire professional movers. Very disappointed in MakeSpace.
After our atrocious experience, I would liken MakeSpace to a criminal organization.
My girlfriend and I were taking the first big steps toward a life together - investing in long-term furniture and moving into an apartment together - and MakeSpace was there to undo each step we took, ruin our property and our sense of security, and seriously endanger the fabric of our relationship.
* Upon moving into our apartment, we were informed of a multi-month waiting time to have her property dropped off to us - This means she didn't have brushes, dishes, and of course any of our furniture; So for the first few months of living in our apartment we had to waste tons of money on household items we already owned as well as sleep on an old mattress and have poor options for sitting (i. E. WORKING in the COVID world!); Basically, MakeSpace held all of our belongings hostage
* Once our property arrived at last, the bed frame we made a big investment in to be our marital and long-term bed was smashed into about sixteen pieces and wrapped in taped up blankets. My girlfriend shed quite a few tears, I spent a great deal of time getting disposing of hundreds of pounds of smashed wood and tape and blankets, and we continued sleeping on our mattress; Eventually, MakeSpace offered a few hundred dollars in damages; We were at this point thousands of dollars down in property and expenses due to MakeSpace's absolute f*ckups, including the dollars we had paid to them of course!
* Finally, upon sorting through our things from MakeSpace, we realized they had lost a set of screws and such. While small in size, I don't have to explain that this also made our large investment dining table useless…
As I consider it now, we paid money to this cruel organization to essentially steal and destroy thousands of dollars of property from us. I will feel less safe next time a moving process approaches and feel generally helpless in what I thought was a judicious business environment in the US. No. Organized Crime is Alive and Well.
My girlfriend and I are making our way out of a rough patch and feeling better <3
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! ITEMS STOLEN, DESTROYED, AND MORE!
Worst moving experience ever? Let's review:
-The cancelled my move ONE HOUR before scheduled pickup. I had to find local college guys to help me move everything I own into a garage as our lease was up that day- it took 7.5 hours!
-On the second attempt they only took half my belongings and left the other half on the side of the road! Seriously!
-They took a piece of furniture I told them NOT to take. When I asked them to take it off the truck they said "Sorry, once it's on the truck we can't take it off." They then sped off. They then LOST that piece of furniture and offered only $70 as compensation! (You might call this theft).
-They lost over half a dozen of my other items and it took three moves to get back most, but not ALL of our belongings- some are still missing! How do you lose a 100 pound dresser?!?!
-THEY CAUSED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN DAMAGE TO OUR BELONGINGS!
-Ultimately half of our belongings were lost or damaged.
Got a worse moving experience? I'd love to hear it.
I too had read all the negative reviews here and on Yelp (conveniently after I had already had my stuff picked up). There were a few things that went wrong, but in the end, all my stuff was delivered on time, unbroken, and the movers helped unwrap everything.
Pick Up:
Pick up was a little rough. The movers were 45 minutes late to the allotted window. I had a flight to catch so this was also quite stressful-- because although the main Make Space phone was available, they just kept telling me "soon" from dispatch, while the movers wouldn't respond at all. They were silent, kinda rude, one guy watched stuff on his phone. BUT they wrapped everything up really well and I felt good about that!
App:
It sucks. It logs in an out all the time. It just won't allow you to access info to your things. Good thing I booked my pickup in like July because damn do they fill up quick and also the app crashes all the time. During pickup it let me track their location better though!
Pickup:
Amahzing. They were on time, communicative, helpful, went the extra mile and helped unwrap everything, AND were kind people. They did bring one extra thing (a broken dresser) that wasn't mine so sad face to whoever's that was. All of my stuff was secure and not broken, just one tear in my bedframe. Overall, with smaller items (I had a bed, mattress, desk, chair, and 7 bins), it seems a-okay! I also had some good luck on my side though, I guess.
Horrible company DO NOT EVER WORK WITH THEM. I have entrusted them with all my things. All boxes suffered damage. There wasn't anything spared. On top of that they lost one item in their warehouse. Can you imagine that? How can they be so incompetent. After waiting for almost a month to get the refund check they wrote the name wrong on it. I cannot cash it in. I have told them right before sending the check to correct the name on file and they didn't. They said they will but obviously didn't. DO NOT EVER EVER EVER MAKE BUSINESS WITH THEM. THEY WILL DAMAGE YOUR ITEMS. THEY WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE A LIVING HELL. RUUUN RUN RUN RUN AND NEVER LOOK BACK!
THEY CANCELLED MY PICKUP ON THE DAY OF THE APPOINTMENT AND OFFERED NO COMPENSATION.
I was flying out 12 hours after the cancellation at the end of the month when all the alternatives are booked. No compensation was offered. The experience was honestly traumatizing. The reason for cancellation was that there was construction near my apartment. I tried to communicate that there is a space away from the construction site available for parking where all the other moving companies park and that my apartment property manager is offering to direct the moving truck. There was neither legal nor logistical problem with parking the truck but they did not listen and cancelled at 1pm on the 30th of the month. I had to fly out early the next morning. The level of stress they incurred was traumatizing.
Basically the customer service is nice and talks a lot of big talk but does not even make efforts to come through for you.
Hi I think there should be a class action suit against Make Space LLC storage company. Is anyone interested in joining? When you ask to get your stuff back they say there's "no appointments" and refuse to return your things and keep charging you storage fees. There are numerous complaints against this company on here, BBB social media etc. The same experience, they hold people's stuff hostage and keep charging fees for storage. I think this would be a prime case for class action since this is not an isolated incident it is common business practice for them to collect more storage $ from customers. I have been trying to get my stuff out of storage for MONTHS! EVERYONE AT A BARE MINIMUM WHO WAS SCREWED BY THIS COMPANY SHOULD FILE A COMPLAINT WITH BBB AND THE FMCSA https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/ and The Attorney General of California (or your state). They need to be held accountable. If enough people bring to the attention their ongoing fraud, maybe someone will do something about it. CLASSACTION LAWSUIT!
Wish there were a zero or a more negative number I could give them. They assured me my items would be in a cage 10x15 and raised the price to $250 from 199 after my second call. I put 19 items into storage with them 10 months ago, ( in Sept 2020) and tried to pull 18 out on the 1st July 2021. Heres what happened:-
Their 1st appointment to return my goods was 19 days later - ok, I paid rent for an empty apartment for 19 days.OK
Then they informed me that an antique English pine dining table ( very heavy and solid, currently items like that are offered on the internet at $10k to $20K) had suddenly lost two legs and a side panel - they sent me a photo which shows obviously that it had been dropped from a height and the whole side had broken off.
On the 19th they delivered the other goods- but suddenly a leather bench was missing. They could not find it? Said it was a computer error and they are still looking.
Numerous items were damaged, obviously the boxes had been thrown or dropped and showed signs of it. One couch was torn. I have photos of all the damage - just want to warn other would be customers - IF YOU VALUE YOUR PROPERTY, DO NOT LEAVE IT IN STORAGE with this Company. Their sales people are slick, but if you are storing goods you obviously want them back in the same condition you gave them - it WONT happen with this Company.
To anyone who plans on using this storage company, read this first: I made my appointment on July 2nd for 8am-11am appt window. Leading up to the appointment make space sends me countless emails and texts telling me to prepare and I better be ready to avoid fees and lateness etc.
I prepare. Mind you my items are about a mid-sized package for them, they handle much larger storage appointments than mine. 4 days before my appointment they text me to confirm. I say yes, they call me later asking if I can move my appt to August 6th, I say absolutely not, they say okay no worries at all we will be there on July 30th between 8am-11am. Morning of the makespace appointment comes and I get no answer and sent to voicemail over and over when I attempt to call their number they provided.
Makespace operations agent calls me 30 minutes before my appointment window ends (10:26 to be exact) that they will not be coming and they can't come until August 9th. I tell them I will pursue legal action for damages. They say JK they have an appointment now for August 2nd that's magically appeared. I accept, I tell them I still want to get in touch with the legal team.
Someone from the claims department (not the legal team) calls me asking if it's possible for me to store my items somewhere in the meantime because I tell them someone else is moving in where do I put my stuff. Claims agent tells me they will try to compensate me for my troubles, but there will be no promises.
Answer: Posing as they are legit, operating like they are a scam.
Answer: They had good reviews, but now their company is a diaster.
