The Japan Rail Pass is worth every penny and incredibly easy to use. We picked up ours at Haneda Airport - we didn't have to queue (we later saw large queues at Ueno and other train stations in Tokyo). Of course using it on the Shinkansen is great but it's also useful on many other JR lines in all the cities throughout Japan. It makes travelling around the whole of Japan easy. Unless you plan on staying in one City it's a must for your trip to Japan.
We loved using the JR Rail Pass for bullet trains, for the long haul, and also for many local trips. There was almost always a local JR train available to get us where we wanted, which I was informed was unlikely but really wasn't except for a few times. The bullet trains were great as you can schedule a seat ahead of time. I get the feeling when you schedule a train, though, that they tend to give you a schedule that's more convenient to the train service than the customer. We left earlier than we had to to take 2 trains to Kyoto, when taking the direct train would have let us leave later on a direct train and arrive at the same exact time. Maybe the direct train was full? I don't know. We ended up on it anway. The biggest complaint I have is that the Wi-Fi was very spotty to the point of being nearly useless. That was very frustrating because when you're on a train for several hours, you want your Wi-Fi.

Remember that your Japan Rail must be kept very safe (ie. Keep it with your passport). Lost passes cannot be replaced. Your only hope is someone turning it into a station. A binder of lost cards is kept at JR station offices.

I traveled for 3 weeks in Japan and it wouldn't have been as easy and wonderful without the JR PASS. It is cost effective, reliable and very easy to use. There is a JR office in every station and you can access almost every national train and some local lines too. Absolutely great.

Traveling by train in Japan is a real experience, and no one should return from Japan without using the Shinkansen trains at least once. The service is so smooth, perfectly on time, and professional in every way. There are a few quibbles though. The Rail Passes have now become too expensive. A 14-day Green pass cost us over $930 each once shipping, insurance & very high handling fees were included. Even that does not allow you to ride in all Shinkansen trains. We had to pay 6,500 yen extra each to take the direct Nozomi train from Hiroshima to Tokyo; otherwise we would have to get Hikari or a similar train requiring a train change - probably at Osaka. We certainly did not recover the cost, however we certainly avoided the hassle of having to buy tickets each time. Even that advantage was diminished because of the long time it took standing in lines to make seat reservations (which was required on Shinkansen trains with our tickets). They really need to introduce online seat reservations. And don't know why it is necessary to buy these passes before arriving in Japan. Never had to do that in any other country. It's not like we were getting heavily discounted tickets! And one has to remember to get the passports stamped as "tourists" at the arrival immigration desk in order to collect the passes. No stamps no passes, even if you have paid the hefty price before you even boarded your flight. They have made it unnecessarily complicated. But overall, definitely a good experience.

Loved the railpass, allowed access to much of where I travelled to. Only criticism is the way it is obtained; having it mailed to my home country and then having to find a JR office and queue to activiate. I'm sure there are good reasons for this but can't help but wonder if there is an easier way for customers.

The JR pass was very easy to use. We took the bullet train three times, used it for several local lines and used it for the Miyajima Ferry. We enjoyed the green seats and liked that we could make reservations a few days in advance for the bullet train. The staff for JR were very polite and even arranged for us to be on the C and bD seats when heading from Tokyo to Kyoto. We were able to get a GREAT view of Mount Fuji. I was very pleased with the JR pass a would recommend it to others who would be in Japan for a week or more.

We purchased Japan Rail passes for a recent visit to Japan. The process to exchange our vouchers for the passes to Narita Airport was quick and efficient.
The passes are super easy to use
The Japan Rail staff spoke good English (our Japanese is poor), were always helpful and courteous. We made extensive use of the Shinkansen and local trains which were always spotlessly clean, comfort and on-time! We saved about 60% from the cost of buying individual trains tickets.
We would highly recommend Japan Rail and the JR Pass.

The website is NOT an official representative for Japan Rail Pass! It's a Spanish middle man company that POSES as being official. Use utmost caution. We ordered 2 passes for over 700€. Instead of mailing the exchange order within a day as advertised we were asked to submit an authorisation code for the payment to prevent the order from being cancelled. My bank (a big European international bank) was not even able to provide such a code. This put us at risk of not getting our tickets in time. After I withdrew from the contract per Email I got my money back at least and ordered from the official site instead.

Purchased the green pass. It was easy to navigate the stations once you get hang of it and how to receive seats in person at each station customer service desk. The station attendants and customer service centers at the stations are very helpful. The bullet trains are very comfortable, seats are nice and wide and spacious, clean and have wifi. Love the bullet trains. Couldn't fully navigate the website and app for train schedules and reservations. Seemed complicated so we reserved seats in person for the next journey at the customer service centers. May want to improve the website and app in English. Overall a great deal and would definitely use JR Green Pass again.

Bought the 7 day JR Pass and travelled to Japan late Aug/2023. Strategically stayed near Nagoya Station and made the area very accessible. I visited Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo, Ise-Shima National Park, and Suzuka. The pass was very useful for far distances. Did not work for local short distances. I had to use different train lines and taxi's. Which cost extra $$.
