ID.ME is garbage

I already had an ID.ME account and uploaded all the required identity documents, so I thought that I was good to go. However, when the VA switched their system, now requiring ID.ME, rather than allowing me fully access with my military CAC, I ran into a snag that I could not do anything about, being stationed overseas, so my access to my VA stuff online was severely limited.

Fast forward to the present. I need that document that the IRS sent out for the child credit payments. I need to do that with the IRS online and they use ID.ME. I signed into my ID.ME account and had to go through a process of taking pictures of my drivers license, tribal ID card, passport, etc..., then uploading those pictures because I live and am stationed in the UK and I can't get around this because I do not have a US phone number. So, everything uploaded and it says you have to do a video chat and whatnot, then it shows the next slot is in 2 hours and it is already after 10 PM in England.

ID.ME is absolute garbage because of 2 major reasons. If you have an ID.ME account, you should not have to verify your identity again and upload more stuff, later. It should be done already.

Secondly, it is not a user friendly service for anyone with the military stationed overseas and it is idiotic to ask for documents, IDs, whatever, that show a FULL NAME that MUST match your current address. How in the hell do you do that when a military address overseas is a box address and you are still using a stateside license with your previous address!?

ID.ME needs to do a way better job and to fix these issues. It is frustrating and time consuming, beyond anything considered reasonable.

Horrible

Horrible sign up experience! Using it to sign into the IRS.

Very cumbersome and the quick way to sign up involved taking ie photos of front and back of your drivers license. Their stupid worthless app allows me to take a photo of the back, but does not allow me to take a photo of the front. This wasted 20 min of my life.

So now i have to take the long route which involves taking photos of front and back of 3 legal documents ie drivers license, irs form and birth certificate (they offer many doc type options which is good). Submitted all those which took me another 20 min because they ask so many questions.

Now i have to wait 3 days for an email to do a 20 min video chat with their rep - IF they approve all my submitted docs.

I scanned my documents on a high quality scanner. I answered all their stupid questions. But then they said I still needed a live agent to verify me. No explanation why. It took days for them to get around to getting back to me. And then I had to wait on hold for almost two hours. That was after I was finally at the head of the line! And what did this guy do? Asked me to hold up my documents to my crappy web camera! There is no excuse for this, other than that you have no choice if you need to connect to the IRS web site.

I was not able to create an account with web brower safeguards in place. Their instructions don't mention which browser(s) are acceptable or what accesses should be allowed. I was not able to get a timely response from IDME. I was able to resolve the issues from the advice from a "good" hacker.

I have tried for hours to get my photos to be accepted. I have done everything asked and still no approval. I am just trying to access a document on IRS. You people have made this impossible.

These are awful people. You can show every current I'd you could have acauired. It will be used to block benefits-- your money not theirs or the states'. Countless hours and they think all they have to do is string "technical" difficulties together to harass and block. Definitely needs to be closed, states, federal government should not be permitted to contract with them. Outrageous.

In order to access my child tax credit report, I had to try to go through this service. After 1 1/2 hours and three different devices(all of which I own), I am still unable to verify my own identity to this third-party service. Despite having the originals of every single document placed on a high resolution scanner, this service gets hung up because it "can't text me". I have never had a different phone number. I have never had a cell phone that cannot receive texts. Having trouble with your ID process? Speak to a referee via video call. Need to speak to a referee? You're going to have to verify your ID. What an absolute garbage service. This company thinks it "provides quality technology', but in reality this technology is extremely flawed. I would not be surprised to hear about a security breach in the near future. If not because of the flawed technology, it will be some brainy hacker guy frustrated to hell like we all are. I just want to file my damn taxes. This should not be this hard. I could have gone down to the office, shown my face, drivers license, passport, Social Security card, birth certificate, proof of mail address, fingerprint, everything—and still completed in a more secure and timely fashion.

WORST WORST WORST

What a horrible experience with this stupid company. IRS itself doesn't work good and they are asking us to create account through this third party. This company is worst than IRS.

I had to go through the Video call for the verification and it was 2 hrs in the beginning and then it's keep coming down and then going back to 2 hrs wait time. Such a horrible experience. It's been 3+hrs already and I am still waiting if my number comes up.

Please IRS, spare people. What wrong they have done to you for showing them such a hard time.

There should be an option to give 0 star. Then I would do that only.

I got on hold at 2:15pm. At around 7pm, the finally video came up. Then, a message stated a member in the group has disconnected me kicking me out twice before it stated waiting for host before they disconnected me for a 3rd and final time before I had to start all over with 3 hours and 40 minutes. This is insane. Why would they use such a company? I goes all over the time anywhere from 4 hours to 2 hours then back to 3 hours repeat. It got down to an hour and a half before jumping to 3 hours 40 minutes. It finally got down to an hour 15 minutes when I got up to use the bathroom and the video suddenly appeared. This thing is a NIGHTMARE.

Worthless

If you lose access to your IDme account due to information updating and not being able to pass the two step verification, you're hosed. I have been emailing the most useless member support representative for days now. They keep asking for the same information and doing nothing. It is so frustrating that this is the only way to verify yourself to get into certain important government websites. It is easier for a hacker to get into my own account than for me to. I would call and speak to a human except you cant!

ID.ME is a colossal mess
December 14, 2021

I went to verify for IRS access with ID.ME even though I already had an IRS account. I presented my DL which is really hard to read for all the new security features added at TSA insistence. The system scanned it but the address was completely hosed. Street # wrong, City wrong, no State and ZIP wrong. I tried to correct the errors but the system would not allow me to do that. After going through several hours of uploading documents and photos I finally gave up and set a help request. Once I got a response to that request I was given a link to a live video chat where I could present my documents to a real person, not some lame piece of software. My initial try said there was an estimated 59 minute wait so I was given the option to try another time and I took it. The next day I again accessed the site and the wait was estimated at 15 minutes but I actually got on in less than 5 minutes. A very nice young lady asked me some questions, asked to see my documents, took a picture and I was done. The whole process was less than 5 minutes after I had spent about 3 hrs of frustration and despair. My hourly rate is $125 so I want to bill ID.ME and/or the IRS for my lost time messing with this colossal mess of an app.
