I had a lot of difficulty setting up my account, especially the profile bits, probably due in part to my use of FireFox and Chrome. But, their tech support people responded and put the data in for me. For an electronics engineer, I'm not seeing a lot of activity so far, and the constant reminders of upgrading to a paid membership are the primary reasons for not giving them a higher rating. For Pete's sake guys, let me use the site and make some money, then ask me for some...
This site allows the freelancers to deceive the employers. Most of the freelancers are from India and Guru has a close relationship with many of them. Guru asked it freelancers and i mean it freelancers not all freelancers on the website, Guru asked them to pretending to be from the USA or Britain because the employers will paid more if the freelancer from USA Or Uk. So Guru let it freelancers to put the Residency in one of these two countries instead of their real residence in India and that will show on freelancers profiles. You can check Guru.com visitors from which countries simple search on www.alexa.com
Where they fall short is the lack of vetting. I am a freelancer on there and a great provider. They do allow too many unvetted freelancers and clients to post. Caution is needed when using the site but I find them better than upwork or freelancer. Upwork and freelancer advertise high end clients and I found none ever.
They do have a support number but technical problems occur for myself and my clients on there which they can never solve. I see others complain about freelancers being from other countries while listed as usa. It's also true of the employers listed. Too many now list themselves as usa and Britain but turn out to be from underdeveloped countries.
The fees are more reasonable and support tries to help but more vetting and more help for support is needed.
If you are a freelancer they request a credit card to validate your account, your ID is not enough, they need you to pay a membership, it seems like they do not want to work with you, they only want your credit or debit card, Guru treats freelancers like bad clients not partners, there are better free alternatives.
Bit surpised from all the negative comments. My expirence with Guru is a 5 stars experience from finding jobs to clients who actually respond. Here is the best features compared to other similar websites:
- you can see who is applying for the job
- you can see who got selected for the job - very informative
- you can send questions about the job to clients without applying.
- less commission!
- blocking power for feedback
Guru.com is a freelancing website, where many projects are available for the freelancers and many other best jobs
Beware of part timers though. Hire those who are devoted to their specialty and you'll have a good experience. Needless to say vett them all appropriately!
Site's like Guru make a joke of being a freelancer. Gone are the days when you could bid on a project, complete it and be paid. This site is packed with scammers who ask for contact on Skype, refuse to give out their contact details and then ask you to do work with no intention of paying you.
This is THE worst freelance site out there and the fact Guru.com do nothing to prevent these scams speaks volumes. They clearly don't care about their reputation, or freelancers. Avoid this site at all costs!
These guys are simply criminals, they allow "Contractors" to be completely fake companies, and refuse to help you track them down for any lawsuits, so in essence they are an active block to any American attempting to exercise their rights and seek small claims court cases, we need to start a criminal case / lawsuit against them
Since I did apply for about 12 auctions to provide services every single one contacted back to me with different than asked services, all people said that can not wire money, only checks. Part of them asked of setting illegal accounts, part of them of fraud. This is the biggest fraud service portal I ever saw. All India scammers and fraud developers are there. There is any - literally any single one normal proposal or business.
Stay away.
This is probably the worst freelancing site you will ever come across. The number of incompetent freelancers is extremely high. After selecting someone to work with, they demand 50% of the payment and once you pay they disappear completely even for users with multiple good reviews(suspicious). When you contact site admin, they tell you they cant do anything about it. Just avoid them completely. Its a scam.
I needed online marketing. Found some great freelancers, guru payment system made it impossible to pay them. In the end had to ask the freelancers to post same job on a different platform (upwork), and got them payed no problem.
Guru customer service sounded very cold and indifferent when i asked for help. I will not do business again. How in the world do they stay in business?
I subscribes to guru paid the necseeary fees ( which is weird thing), came with 0 results.
The projects traffic is so low that u can no depend on this site for a living.
I dont recommend using this site, in the same time there is better alternatives
His Skype is paul. Ricky 81, feel free to message him and generally scold him. Put about 8-9 hours of writing into projects and articles of his (for really, really good pay) only for him to ghost on me and not pay. Just messaged guru but I don't see how they could help. But hey, at least I'm not that person that wrote a 40,000 word book (!) for a client only for them to ghost. Wow.
I've been a Guru member since 2005, and have used their service getting great results until recently. Not long ago, I hired a contractor to do a writing project for me. It took a week before he informed me he was starting my project, which was supposed to be completed in two weeks or less. I contact Guru to see if I could cancel the award for the job and hire another contractor. This was in mid October and it is now the beginning of December and I have yet to hear from them. And my two week job, is now a two month and running job. The only reason I'm sticking with it is because I don't know how to get my money out of the escrow account. After this, I will never use this service again.
I have no problem with the freelancer they are very decent, My issues lies with Guru. Their payment platform raises issue 2 times out of 3, despite showing a message payment was not successful they still charge the money to your bank account as many times as you tries to pay them out. They received the money and cancel it out instead of paying it to the free lancer causing hefty bank charges. When asked about the customer service, it is non existing. They washed their hand of any situation, have no sort of customer service and act according to their own decision with total disregards for any furhter problem they may have, As client I suggest you stay away from them
After reading all of the reviews below I am glad I wasn't able to register with Guru. They are the most mixed up, useless, group that ever started an online site. Very slow response. I think I will stick with UpWork for now.
I worked there 3 years and they make it impossible to contact or defend yourself when a employer abuses their system. Literally its an escrow that when a client doesnt escrow the whole job, the client can get the work, take it, use it and even when you show them the published stolen work... 35 pages of it. They still refund him and let him leave feedback he never got anything. I have had employers abuse, cuss, threaten feedback that would prevent anyone from employing me and do it, even when they havent put up money ON AN ESCROW SITE. Plus they charge almost 8% after all is said and done.
If and when the interface works, the only jobs that bring a response are scammers looking for keyword-stuffers. No matter how desperate you may be for money trickling in, never EVER accept any "employer" that wishes to a) work through Skype or e-mail outside of Guru's system b) anyone who wants to see "spec" samples or receive free trials of any kind. Even when working directly though Guru's channels, do not expect much in the way of response or support. Also, other freelancing sites offer skills test for FREE. Guru charges through the nose for tests and opportunities to bid.
I used someone in India to build my website "KEY IDEAS INFOTECH" they did not build this to a satisfactory level and kept us financial hostage. They convinced us to pay them early each step saying most of the work was done. I still recieved no final copy of the app and it was all paid for. I lost touch with them. But seen as they had done a lot of the app we decided to build website and blog with them also(big mistake) so I'm out of pocket $$$$ and no app or website blog to show for it.
Guru refuse to step in and stop this from happening to others. Guru are not there to keep the consumer safe like they make out. Do yourself a favour and don't ever use guru! Build any websites blogs etc where you are from
Answer: Stay away this site because they are fool totally. I crated an account any uploaded my documents. They took all my documents and closed my account. It's a total scam. Soon they will come some reason and send you an email. I had posed a review of guru.com here and also attached the E-mail sent by guru.com. This is the Email sent by them: Hello. Answer: It's a scam! They find any excuse to hold funds and terminate accounts. Steer away from those crooks!
