“Excellent Customer Service”

Kelly B.
11/26/22

I am new to web development and created my second website ever which was also my first WordPress site. The process helped me to learn quite a bit. There were times that I wanted GreenGeeks to do my part of the work because I simply did not know what I was doing. At one point, I was told that I must hire a developer, but I am a poor college student and could not afford that. I decided to do my best to figure it out and I did. I learned about CSS coding, SEO optimization, scanning, indexing, reindexing, caches, and much more. I also sent them information on how I corrected things to make providing service easier and to help their tech support staff learn. My site turned out beautifully. Given how inexpensive the cost to create a site with GreenGeeks is, I highly recommend them. I intend to build more sites with them. I tried HostGator, which my educational institution (UWSP - Stevens Point, WI) saw as a malware threat, and the cost was about the same as GreenGeeks, but I could not use the site. My first site was on site123 and they cost about 3 times as much money, but they did have excellent SEO optimization which they designed themselves. I have learned much and feel that GreenGeeks went above and beyond. It is easy to be critical, I have a degree in math and am pursuing a BFA in graphic design. If one does a cost-benefit analysis, I feel GreenGator is the best choice for me. Feel free to visit my website at www.artadvocatingforearth.com or www.artadvocatingforearth.us. This site was created for under $100.00. This is an example of what you could do with some effort and hard work. This is a school project and I could not be happier with the site. It took time and work, but if you are willing to do that, the sky is the limit.

“Can't Cancel Your Service”

Shirley J.
3/19/23

Tried to cancel three times. Did exactly what they told me to do in order to cancel. Even got a cancellation number. Still being billed. Very disappointed in green geeks. I expected so much more from a "green" company who supposedly cares. Very angry disrespectful employees on the help line. One particular employee at the help desk, Meg, seems void of manners and treated me very poorly. No simple apology for any of the mistakes I or my company endured. Just a "sorry you are having this experience with us" would have made a big difference. So here I am rating them... I have never rated anyone before, but I felt disregarded by this company and do not want anyone else to deal with this.

Tip for consumers:
Avoid it. There is a disconnect between the technical side and billing that will cost you money. Non-responsive.

These bozos caused me to lose a domain I have had, and been paying on, for the past eight years.
They were also hosting a website for me and allowed it to get snatched up by Wix without my authorization. Dealing with that matter has been a major time drain and major hassle on me.
I am now moving all my domains and website hosting away from GreenGeeks.
They are absolutely terrible.

Tip for consumers:
WARNING: Do not use GreenGeeks.
You will regret it if you do.

At one point, I hosted 4 sites with Green Geeks, and only had one security issue over approximately 3 years. That was the positive.

The negatives started to crop up when I attempted to cancel service on 1 of the domains.

First, I contacted customer support to cancel the service. They would not cancel, but directed me to their online cancellation webpage. That's understandable, to help prevent malicious cancellation requests by non-site-owners.

Second, I called billing when I saw that my card had been charged a day before the next billing cycle. I asked them to stop this payment, as I had already indicated my request to cancel service on the site. They said this violated their Terms of Service since I had not submitted an official cancellation request through their website, and that they would go ahead and bill for the full next year's billing cycle. While annoying that they wouldn't honor my request to stop billing (which I did before the next billing cycle started), I understand that some companies like to cling to Terms of Service to nickel and dime customers.

The real trouble began when I tried to actually cancel my service. The same day that billing refused to honor my request of non-payment (i. E. a day before the next billing cycle), I visited Green Geeks and submitted a cancellation request via their online cancellation process. The site indicated I would receive a cancellation notice email. This notice never arrived in my email, and when I logged into my Green Geeks portal, the site for which I'd tried to cancel service did not show any "Cancellation Pending" status.

I reached back out to Green Geeks' support, who referred me back to the website to cancel. I tried to cancel again. And again, nothing happened. So - much more annoyed by now - I asked Green Geeks customer service what I needed to do to cancel, and offered to show them a screenshot of my attempts to cancel online that weren't successful. They told me to send an email to Green Geeks' Customer Support, who would get it taken care of. So I did.

The Customer Support team responded, indicating that they would escalate my cancellation request to the Quality Assurance team. Finally some progress! Despite all my frustrations with their broken online cancellation process, and with billing's refusal to honor my request not to be billed for a service I wasn't using and had indicated I wanted to cancel, all would be right if they'd just honor my cancellation request. This was exciting news that I was finally making progress...

Until Quality Assurance routed me back to the same cancellation website that didn't work. I told the Quality Assurance member that this cancellation website didn't work and provided screenshots of me trying to cancel via this website on 2 separate occasions.

His response? Well... he didn't respond. Completely ignored my email detailing to him how the cancellation website doesn't work.

Finally, I had no other choice but to cancel the card Green Geeks has on file by contacting my bank, to prevent Green Geeks from billing me almost $100 per year for a site I don't use, tried to cancel, and ultimately couldn't leave because Green Geeks continually sandbagged me.

Just to verify my reasonableness throughout the process, I have chosen not to dispute the payment for the site I tried to cancel BEFORE the billing cycle started, thus honoring Green Geeks' last-generation policy that requires you to cancel at least 5 days in advance of your billing cycle. But I will not be hosting any more sites with Green Geeks any more, and will transition the 3 other sites I have with them to new hosting providers.

Tip for consumers:
Don't give them your credit card number if you can help it. They seem to view credit cards as the goose that lays the golden egg.

If you're just getting started with building websites (including your own), strongly consider SquareSpace instead, which offers domain name, hosting, an easy-to-use website-building interface, AND beautiful templates for $192/year vs. Green Geeks $95/year for ONLY hosting.

Greengeeks doesn't really need new customers, and they probably don't appreciate the old ones either. I am describing something that happened an hour ago. I had the following incident, I placed an order for hosting and paid for it. Payment is authorized. Immediately I get an email with a long list of requirements, photos of the card on both sides, photos of documents, etc. I was discouraged by such insolent demands to provide my personal and payment data, so I refused to provide them and demanded a refund. The company said, quote: Thank you for your patience, as previously mentioned we have not processed, charged or entered your order in our system. And now, instead of doing business, I have to spend time and effort to fix something that was not my fault and get my money back. I never found out how well their hosting service works, but it doesn't seem to be any better than it is with their customer srvice. So if you're going to use their services, think twice, or better yet three times! There are a lot of other companies on the market that are probably better organized.

The owners of this great (sarcasm!) company had no sense to impose their exorbitant demands BEFORE the payment was made. This is the first time I've encountered this attitude in twenty years and it is disgusting. Take note of my sad experience and keep away from them!

This company provides a mediocre service which they overcharge for. They then make it impossible to cancel their service. If a company has to trick people into paying for another year of a service that they won't use then refuses to refund customers you know they are a shady business with no interest in anything but the bottom line.

I have no clue what makes a website hosting company "green"... greengeeks claims to be a green website hosting company and I do like how they are supposedly eco friendly. It would be nice for them to list on their website exactly how they are going about doing this. I imagine they are using low energy servers, low energy fans, and as such but I wish they would tell me. I signed up for them and their prices are very reasonable. Their video tutorials are also easy to understand. I have recommended greekgeeks hosting to my friends though the constant concern is that because they are Green is that they are not having enough electrical power to the servers and that they are going to run more slowly. I have not had that experience yet everyone seems to be worried about that. A point I think greengeeks should address and let people know that is not the case.

This company is a scammer. I bought hosting, I paid for it, but they did not deliver the server, they say they canceled the order, they say they did not receive the money, it was automatically refunded. But money was taken from my credit card, they are deceiving by lying, definitely do not shop from this company

I was initially drawn in by an eco friendly store, so I paid for 3 years of service at a reasonable cost, but then they notified me they'd charge $15.95/mo for 3 more years, nearly $600 in one go. I contacted support and was told the price wasn't negotiable so I said they lost a customer. Even after my credit card initially failed, they somehow renewed and charged it, and I only learned when my CC sent a text re purchase. After complaining that i would be disputing the charge, they refunded all but one month even though I canceled before the end of my contract. They are NOT easy to divorce and the business model stinks for those of us who run very low traffic websites. Find anyone else. $16/MO is criminal. Autorenew is a scam.

Tip for consumers:
Fand another host. If you're a current customer, get out before they screw you with an autorew at high cost.

I'm reading all the negative reviews about GreenGeeks support and I just can't agree. My experience with their support was excellent. Truly professional and efficient. I have two major deal-breaker problems with them, however. I opened a Pro account (the middle one) with unlimited domain names and quickly learned that additional domain name document root folders are stored INSIDE your public_html folder, which is ridiculous. My other webhost (WHC) stores each additional domain name's document root at the same level as your public_html folder, which means nobody can get access to any other domain's files by having access to your main folder. For example, with GreenGeeks you can type into a browser: www.test1.com/www.test2.com/index.html and actually load he file from the 2nd domain. Mickey-mouse.

My next problem is how they advertise on GreenGeeks.CA (not.com) how they are "Canada's #1 Green Energy Web Hosting Provider" and the heading above their hosting plan prices says "CANADIAN WEB HOSTING PLANS". Unfortunately all of the prices shown are in US Dollars and it doesn't indicate anywhere this is the case. It's totally deceptive. Even during checkout I had no idea I was paying in USD (which costs about 35% more than CAD). They should be ashamed of themselves for this alone. It wasn't until I received my payment receipt in the mail that I knew I just paid in American bucks.

My third problem is how it's tricky to cancel and it's impossible to configure a registered domain name to not auto-renew. This is the first webhost that I've seen in 25 years that doesn't allow you to set your domain names to manual or auto renew. If you don't want your domain to auto-renew you must open a ticket and manually ask for them to set your domain to not auto-renew. Same goes for your actual hosting account. What a nightmare for those of us with many domain names. That being said, the cancellation process was fairly painless. It's just extra hoops they put up to jump though in an effort to keep those credit card charges going through, IMO. If for any reason I received ongoing charges on my card I will do something I've never had to do in 35 years of having a credit card: chargeback. VISA will give me my money back because I have ample proof of cancellation of services. I don't expect this to be an issue based on how professional GreenGeeks was with me during the cancellation process.

I was switching away from my regular webhost, but now that I know how deceptive and sneaky the competition can be, I'm now staying put. I took my host for granted; didn't appreciate them. I do now! A few extra bucks a month is totally worth it!

Stay away from GreenGeeks.

Tip for consumers:
If you only have one domain name and one website these guys might be adequate for you. If you have more than one domain, forget it; they're inadequate. Plus their domain name administration seems like it is targeted to kindergartners. No way to configure auto-renew or manual renew. Custom DNS zones I didn't even try - not sure it's even possible. I cancelled everything before I got that far.

I initially chose this eco-friendly store and committed to a 3-year service plan at a reasonable cost. However, I was later informed of an additional charge of $16.95 per month for another 3 years, totaling $610.20. Even after my initial credit card payment failed, they somehow renewed and charged it without notification. I only became aware of the transaction when my credit card company alerted me. Upon expressing my intention to dispute the charge, they refunded all but one month, despite canceling before the end of my contract. I strongly advise seeking alternatives, as a monthly charge of $16.95 is unjust, and the auto renewal system seems deceptive.

Why? Well the first thing was that creating and having a website was easy and good. BUT BUT I asked and talked to them 6 times (around 4 months) to remove my account and my website. They told me how to and I did it. But it did not every work. So they have ignored this and charge me money every month. Maybe they are actually a bit of a criminal

Our business was looking into upgrading an exisitng web hosting plan and asked their Sales Rep to answer a couple questions before we committed. Without our authorization, the rep went ahead and processed the upgrade and charged our credit card. When we questioned the charge, GreenGeeks billing department refunded the wrong amounts for the wrong services. Yet, one rep told us we'd be getting a full refund for the mishandling and that didn't happen. In the end, we complained to their Sales Manager who admitted they were wrong about the entire processing experience. And the manner in which they were willing to make good on their mistakes and mishandlings was unacceptable if not laughable. We are advising our business clients to avoid GreenGeeks and find another hosting provider.

Tip for consumers:
Avoid this website hosting service if you're a business that values doing business with a service provider that's customer focused. GreenGeeks is not that kind of business.

I set my account to no auto renew. I assume this is why they phoned me on Jan 18 asking me if I was renewing for $395US for 3 years. I said, "Absolutely not!" I wasn't using it very much, and that is way too much for what I do. Caroline R said, let me see what I can do, and sent me an email offering around 250USD with 48 hours to respond or the offer would be withdrawn.

Meanwhile, I had decided not to keep the service because it was way to expensive for the amount I use it. I ensured my account wasn't on auto renew. I knew the credit card I used to set up 3 years ago had expired although I still have the same number. My GG account had a big red banner stating no valid payment option was available on my account.

On February 6,22 hours before my site expired, at 2AM, Green Geeks put the $395US charge through on an expired credit card.

I disputed immediately by trouble ticket and email. Their best offer? I can cancel auto renew now if I wish, but I will not get a refund and it will cancel my service immediately.

They make accounts automatically auto renew and it is very difficult to turn off. If you do, apparently they phone to try to get you to purchase, as they did me on Jan 18. And, in my case, I am of the view they have put an unauthorized charge on my credit card account, and have contacted my bank. The only remedy GG is offering is to keep my money and terminate their webhosting of my site immediately, although apparently I've now paid for 3 more years despite, 1) having advised verbally on Jan 18 would not renew, 2) turning off auto renew, and 3) trying to ensure they did not have a "valid payment option".

I strongly advise people to avoid a company that needs to resort to this type of business practice.

This outfit is the most frustrating around.
Over a course of 6 months they have caused a problem with their email hosting more or less every week. If it doesn't go down, it lets through tons of spam. One time I spent hours deleting redundant emails and organising my inbox only to login the next day and find the whole lot had been 'restored'. No apology or refund. They delight in throwing jargon at people and making excuses. I thought GoDaddy was $#*! but GreenGeeks is worse. STAY AWAY!

They changed their name to catch the 'green dollars'. I used to work for them and I know that they are a fake company. They use the same high, energy-hungry servers like anyone else, even a little older and less-efficient than many others.

GreenGeeks should be - DirtyBrownGeeks. Don't trust this company or any other reviews that it pays people to do online. They are borderline scam. Go for a more reputable company and get some work done for you cash.

They really are scammers. They sometimes charge your card without your knowledge, they offer you services that don't exist, and they then won't reply to your requests for clarification.

They are just an unreasonable, unprofessional outfit. Take your business somewhere else.
