I started using Grammarly sporadically late last fall when I got into the literature review section of my dissertation. I really only wanted a "second set of eyes" to review things when I didn't have a live set available. Last week, I decided to use it for 2 documents that were over 100 pages each. Thankfully, I checked them again myself before submitting them. Not only were there glaring grammatical errors that Grammarly had missed, there were MANY instances in which it had misidentified a subject in a sentence and, as a result, had tagged the verb as incorrect. I'm a former middle and high school English teacher. If I know NOTHING else, I know the rules of subject/verb agreement. I was also surprised and dismayed at Grammarly's overuse of commas, as if they are the only form of punctuation in lengthy or compound sentences, and it's identification of "passive voice" everywhere in the documents-- including where it didn't exist. It also wanted to remove commas (along with semi-colons) from places that required something to acknowledge dependent/independent clauses.
Sadly, I paid for a year's worth of this service. It's a decent spell checker so I may leave it installed but I will no longer use it as a review tool.
I found Grammarly less than useful and sometimes misleading. Okay for free maybe. Most annoying was that they do not give a reminder when your subscription is up. Two days after mine ran out the best they gave me was a partial refund with a one-month subscription that I will not use. Watch out.
Once I downloaded Grammarly when I right click in Chrome I no longer see "add to dictionary" and I'm guided to add to Grammarly Dictionary. However, you need to register for an account, which I tried to do, but could not submit successfully, leaving me in a Catch-22. The word I wanted to add was "tippiness" which is easy to look up on Google. You'd think that the speed of new accounts would alert Grammarly that their registration process is flawed. It's spell and grammar checking is okay, colorful and relatively convenient.
I am a PhD student and was using Grammarly to help correct my grammar. What a joke, it finds errors where there are none, tries to change words which do not need changing, adds commas where none are needed and misses the places where they are needed. I am fairly new to academic writing and this tool was recommended by another student but it has been more pain than its worth. My supervisors were not at all impressed when I showed them what it was doing. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY
It hardly works half of the time and it's a waste of time and money. I could do much better on my own.
I used it on a website project and it was going okay at first. It wasn't all that great though, I used it on one word, and the fix did not make sense at all. Here is one example from this very review: I used it on a website project and it was going okay at first. It wasn't all that great though, I used it on one word. It actually had the audacity to change on to in. It does not make any sense. Do not waste your time with Grammarly, just don't.
I've used this for two term papers and would've gotten perfect scores it wasn't for the grammar. My teacher found 8 fragments in one of the papers, she was appalled. If I would've just read them myself and used my own judgment I would've done much better. Instead, I trusted an app I paid 60 dollars for, never again. P. S I never write bad reviews but this app was released far too soon when it should've been worked on more, and I don't want anyone's grades to be affected like mine were, or feel like a fool like I did.
It corrects your sentences with great precision. Much better than any native autocorrector in our phones or os's.
Don't bother with grammarly. I rate it minus 5. Finds mistakes where none exist, and although you instruct it to ignore, it keeps bringing them up. Puts commas everywhere, often without good reason. It does not understand simple past and continuous past tenses. It puts articles where they are not necessary. It cannot identify context. It often wrongly attributes the subject of a verb. Grammarly is a nightmare for creative writers.
First off, I was okay with grammarly for a while, then over time it became a bit redundant. Even now it is telling me to put commas everywhere in my sentences. If you really follow all of their suggestions, your work will look like you don't understand the basics of English grammar, and even more, you'll get some fairly crappy suggestions to words you've used too often that make no sense in the context.
Now after saying that, let us talk about their scamming. I joined under a $70 plan and thought about renewing because 'hey it's only $70!' But then of course when the time came to renew, the site decided to charge me $140... without giving me any warning of the change. Seriously? What kind of company is this? Btw the whole situation has caused an issue with my bank account right now and I'm in the process of refuting their charge. After reading a few other reviews though, I'm getting concerned that I won't be seeing that money returned to me anyhow.
This company sucks. I don't really care about the money I spent on it (in the past) but when they try to charge me double without telling me they'd raised the prices? That's low. I can't wrap my head around it. I mean you have to know you're scamming people if you format your business in this manner. What are these people getting at? Oh, money, that's right. Not helping others. That might be a kind and ethical thing to do.
(Edit: I got a refund from them - after talking with my bank, paypal, and their customer service)
I am a professional editor and proofreader, have a degree in English, and can tell you that whoever makes the "rules" for this site doesn't know basic grammar. I have intentionally made errors with commonly confused words such as "their," "there," and "they're." Grammarly did not ever catch even these simple errors, and sometimes they suggested a "fix" that would make an error where none originally existed. And even worse than the ineffectual grammar "corrections" is the fact that it is almost impossible to get rid of it. I have tried, but it is still their. (If you can see its corrections, you will see one where there's nothing wrong and one where something is wrong, but it didn't catch it: "their," where it should be "there." And I can't get rid of it, no matter what I do!
I cancelled my annual service months ago as I found another program that looks for editing mistakes as well as spelling and grammar for cheaper. Our credit card was frozen this morning. After talking to the bank, Grammarly was trying to charge our EXPIRED debit card. I called the number our bank gave for them, and I got pass the menu to billing. After two rings, the phone was picked up. The person on the other end ended up hanging up before I could say anything. The end result was we ended up cancelling that card, and the bank is issuing us a new one.
I am an amateur creative writer and I have a problem with commas and run on sentences and some spelling issues. I am using the free version of Grammarly right now to write this review. It just now told me that I forgot "i before e" rule when I wrote "review". Of course, if I'd written this review in Word that would have been corrected.
I was trying to decide whether I should buy the paid version after I had sent a short piece of fiction through the program and found the usual issues with my use of commas and eighty-two advanced issues. Yikes! The advanced writing issues included: punctuation in compound/complex sentences, word choice, and passive voice misuse. I decided to do a little experiment. I uploaded a Raymond Carver story, which I think had been super-edited by a "New Yorker Magazine" editor. Grammarly disagreed with only two incidents of punctuation. The advanced issues where off the chart. A total of one-hundred and two. Grammarly didn't care for Carver's and his editor's word choice, unclear references, punctuation in compound/complex sentences, passive voice misuse, inappropriate colloquialisms and twenty more issues. What else?... in spite of the fact that I found this short story of Carvers on the internet, Grammarly did not hint that the story was plagiarized. Grammarly just helped me with the spelling of "plagiarized". So if you need some help with your commas and with spelling I think the free version of Grammarly might be for you. It is possible that it is a good tool for business writing but I wouldn't suggest it for anyone involved in creative writing. I just put a Hemingway story through Grammarly. Only ninety-two advanced issues. I won't be paying extra to find out what they are.
They started to charge me every month without consent.
Ive emailed them 5 times to ask them to STOP!
They just ignore you and keep taking money.
This has been going on for months!
I literally used it ONCE. Cancelled the stupid free trial like 29 days before it ended. I open my paypal and the $#*!ers took $130 from my account. I'm reporting it as unauthorized access and attempting to get a refund.
$#*! these guys. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE I DID! DO NOT USE THIS!
I THINK THAT GRAMMERLY IS THE WORST THING SINCE HAVING TO REGISTER WITH MICROSOFT IT CONSTANTLY GUESSES WHAT I AM GOING TO SAY AND IT'S ALWAYS WRONG. I HAVE VERY GOOD COMMAND OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND I JUST DON'T NEED IT. IT IS VERY IRRITATING AND ANNOYING AND AWFUL IF YOU KNOW HOW TO WRITE PROPERLY.
Grammarly found 64 'Critical Errors'. After Paying £100 for the full version I checked my document with the Premium Grammarly Version. To my astonishment, all of the 64 errors weren't actual mistakes.
I am claiming a full refund now.
They make it so hard to cancel and get a refund and there's no telephone to contact! They are a rip off! Beware!
This website states that you can cancel your membership whenever you want, and that they won't charge you. That is an absolute lie. I tried out the premium account, and canceled the day of. I was notified right away that my membership was canceled and that I would not be charged. I checked my account and it states that I am still a member and they charged me. There's also a button where you can cancel your membership and activate other features, and it isn't even letting me cancel! What a shame. Get your $#*! together, and stop ripping people off. It's not cool.
Answer: I agree with everyone else. I have been using grammarly for almost 2 years and I never had a problem with viruses or anything. It is a good product and well worth the investment.
Answer: Only for premium but everything else is free It's great!

Answer: Make sure you have set it to your language, as the default is American English, and you may need to change it. If you don't need to, remember that you could have failed for other reasons (not enough information, too much information, using Grammarly as a tool that will get everything right etc.).
Answer: There is a limit, but I find that only a minor inconvenience. If the document goes over the size limit, just cut and paste the document by halves or thirds and run Grammarly checks on each part.
Answer: linguisoft.com - Gtrammarian PRO is a good one.
Answer: Hi, Aleksandra! We can't expect Grammarly to work effectively with song lyrics because grammar rules are often ignored altogether to add aesthetic elements to them. If you have any other questions, please contact us directly at http://gram.ly/3zJAHbw.
Answer: Hi, John! This shouldn't be happening, but if you are experiencing this issue, we suggest contacting our technical support team via: gram.ly/3zJAHbw. They can help you troubleshoot this issue. We hope this helps!
Answer: Hi, Anne! If you need to recover any of your recently deleted documents, contact our support team by submitting a ticket through this link: gram.ly/3zJAHbw. We might be able to recover them!
