Last summer I ordered 2 climbing roses, 1 ground cover rose and 1 hardy hibiscus. They all arrived except for one and a plant I didn't order. I had to mail back the label sticker but got to keep the wrong plant. DG replaced the missing plant quickly. All of the plants came as roots. I planted them. This year they're all doing great, better than the plants I purchased at local stores. I definitely will buy from Direct Gardening again.

Be aware of return policy!
I receive my order November 5,2019. I live in zone 9 and was excited about my Yukon gold potato seeds for fall planting. Seeds came molded and dead (see picture). When I called customer service at direct gardening they told me shipments no longer going out as of October 31 and will resume in March of 2020 I can send label back and get my seed replaced in March 2020 or I can send them bad seeds I received and get a refund of $5.99. Either way I'm at loss. I can't get seeds now and most likely will spend more money sending molded seeds back then what they cost me to start with. Awful! I will never order from direct gardening again!

Should rename this site, "No Gardening"! Ordered two red clematis plants three months ago. I have sent numerous emails since then only to receive automatic responses promising "in one month" "coming in a month" "coming in a week." I intend to report this site to my state's consumer fraud department, the better business bureau, and any website that accepts reviews. One star is more than this site deserves.

Crooks and Cheats
June 9, 2020

Too bad you have to leave a star to comment. Whatever is the opposite of a star is what they should get. They are a totally fraudulent company. Website looks slick but that's just to lure you in. My order was delayed for months. When I cancelled the order, it arrived a few days later. Moldy, wet mushy potatoes and other trash. Their return policy is set up as a scam; really the whole place is. As you can see by the tons of bad reviews, they are horrible to deal with and send worthless junk.

As stated by most of the other reviewers on this site, the customer service and quality control of this company is horrible. I purchased over $80 worth of dinner plate dahlia bulbs which took more than 6 weeks to arrive, well past the date I was hoping to plant them. Additionally, they were shipped in a flimsy non-protected plastic bag and as a result, many were damaged. Most of the tubers were extremely small and several of them were rotted. As others have also stated, trying to reach them by phone is impossible. Stay away from these crooks!

I appreciate that the pandemic has delayed orders, and I was told it might take up to 4 weeks. It took 7-1/2 weeks. I inquired and was told it would take 3-4 days to get a response. It took 8 days. By then I had received notice of shipment, but the response said my order was just then being filled. These people do not have a grip on their business. And I've never seen such poor plants. I attach a photo of a Dicentra spectabilis--I can't even tell which part to put in the soil. Other plants had zero top growth--how is that possible in June? Rather than send "bonus" plants (poorly identified and not what was promised), they should spend more effort on the items we pay for and actually want.

Shipping time
July 5, 2020
Updated review

This is an update to my earlier negative review. It has occurred to me that they take so long to ship garbage because it's that much more difficult to dispute the charge on your credit card if two cycles of billing have occurred.

Wish I'd read reviews first
June 19, 2020
Previous review

If I had read all the reviews first, I would've saved my money because I suffered the same negative result. The clematis I ordered and for which I had to wait weeks is still a tiny dead stick after careful planting and nurturing. It's not worth my time to send it back to them because I understand they don't stand behind their merchandise anyway.

Update 5/21/18
May 21, 2018
Updated review

Finally received the replacement order, of course just after filing a dispute with my card company! The plants sat on my porch for two days because I didn't get notice that they had shipped and I was away. They were dry but seemed to have some life, so I planted them. It's been about a week but so far no growth. I do think I will get something out of most of them, but after what I've been through with this company, I stand by my original review!

The WORST!
May 4, 2018
Previous review

I'd give no stars if I could. I placed an order at the end of July 2017 and received (berry) plants that looked dead, but I planted them anyway thinking they may be dormant, and I wanted to give it some time before contacting the company.
I finally contacted them after 2 months of nothing, sent the shipping labels they requested, which they returned so that I could anwer a question about how many plants were dead (something they could have called about to expidite the process) then had to send them again. This process took about 3-4 weeks. I waited for a new shipment, never received it. When I called, they told me they stopped shipping in October and would not be able to ship again until spring, and based on my planting season (which begins in March, it is now May). I have called numerous times, at one time was told the order had been cancelled. I was able to get that fixed so they were still planning to send my order.
Every time I've called they tell me they have "no control" over when the order will ship, and as to whether they'll even have the plants available to ship. It turns out that they are not even the grower. They are a middle man who never has the plants in their possesion, so they don't even know whats actually available and when.
They don't seem the least bit concerned about trying to get this order done, and there is a time limit that is getting daily closer, to reship replacement plants. The next thing they'll tell me is that I'm past the date for replacement. I've taken up a dispute with my credit card company and expect to get my money back.
I will NEVER order from them again, and caution everyone else to do the same.

I ordered several trees and plants that should have been shipped immediately, as I live in southeast Virginia. I waited a month and called their so-called customer service and was to told to read their shipping policy. They pretend to ship according to the planting zones. My sister ordered her trees from one of the companies who are serviced by Direct Gardening. She received her trees in two weeks and all were healthy.

Took 10 weeks to get my order. Once the order came it was a joke. Everything put in one plastic bag. The 5 in 1 trees are only 1 single stalk and just over 2 feet tall and cost 35.00 each. No proof that they have been grafted to have the 5 types of pears or 5 types of plums. No labels or enclosed papers telling how the trees are grafted to know what kind of fruit will grow from what side of the tree. Could have bought huge 5 in 1 trees for the same price at local ace hardware and other stores. My logan berry plants were also 1 single stem and only 1 foot tall. The biggest joke of a company I have ever seen, DO NOT BUY FROM THEM EVER! Their customer service is also a joke. R. Baker

Save your money!
July 24, 2020

Because of the stay-at-home order, I bought plants and seeds by mail. I should have read the reviews, if you are here before placing an order, you are in luck! The plants that I ordered were ok, one was however a variety that I did not order of the same plant. The elephant ear bulbs were fine, all other bulbs and dormant fern root stocks, were ancient and sadly demised, they have joined the choir invisible... they are dead but pushing up no daisies... Their "Guarantee" is replacement only, they are hoping that you'll just cut your losses, who wants the same crap one year later?

Bad business
June 11, 2020

This company is so crooked. Ordered on 4/12/20, as of 6/12/20 still no order, but took the monies two times from account.
First claim was no order, I had confirmation number, 2-5 claims no shipping address but when I open site I see it plain as day, 2- 8 claims also stated order is being processed... this business should be investigated.

I put 2 orders last fall and one came broken and dead. I contacted them. I was told to plant it to see if it would come back this spring. It didn't and so were the other two. I had written emails to them back and forward for 5 months. According to the value and available stock, Finally I received 5 peonies with the colors that most hated, that's yellow and red. Two are roots with sign of life, the other three are roots with stems but they look dry and dead. Anyway I planted them all to see if they will grow. This company just made the return or replacement so difficult. I had to pay the postage to send the dead plants back to them. Also I sent a letter with new order including a check of shipping fee by registered mail just in case. This is a hell of experience. Anyone who read my review should think twice before you order anything from them!

This company has terrible reviews and I wish I would have read them. I ordered some plants that took over a month to be delivered. When they arrived half of them were dead. I contacted the company and they want ME to pay for return shipping. Yet they were the ones to ship dead plants. It seems that it is quite common for them to do this.

DO NOT SHOP THERE!

I did a scratch test and you can see they are completely dead. So now I am out of my money

Selling Dead Trees
September 22, 2021

I ordered 12 Poplar trees and when I got them they looked dead. They told me that they would come back if I planted them... they didn't. So I asked for replacements. After 3 months, the replacements finally came... they were dead too. So I returned the shipping paperwork as requested. Never heard back from them. When I called, they said it was beyond the year warranty... so no replacement trees. This was because Direct Gardening dragged their feet until the 1 year warranty expired.

I recommend not wasting your money here. There are plenty of other nurseries to do business with.

Nothing about this company is positive, they take forever to ship your items, they do not answer the phone it just gives busy signal, and they take 3-5 days to respond to emails. They literally do not give a FFF about their customers. I have been a customer for 2 years and have decided never again after multiple bad experiences. Who does that?

Plants took several weeks go arrive. They were advertised as plants but were bare roots. They ended up coming in the summer not spring which is when they needed to be planted. They don't pay shipping or label to return. Only reason purchased was I wanted live plants.

Crappy business
February 9, 2021

My first review I gave it a 5 because the roses looked healthy and was doing great. I ordered 4 different kinds and colors of roses and when roses bloomed I have 3 the same color. I didn't get what I ordered. I'm in my warranty period but does the expense and digging up the roses to send back worth the trouble and then take a chance I will actually get what my first order was. I wish I would of read the reviews before ordering from this company. I'm sure their is others that are honest

... from actual items offered to customer service, this company is by far the absolute WORST I've ever had the displeasure to buy from. They send dead plants and if by some miracle something is alive, it's usually the wrong thing, not what you ordered. Customer service is anything but, and a complete joke. Avoid *all* costs!
