BikesDirect has garnered a mixed reputation among customers, with several positive reviews highlighting the affordability and quality of their bikes, often perceived as better value compared to branded options. However, significant concerns arise regarding product quality inconsistencies, such as rusting components and assembly issues. Customer service frequently receives criticism for being unresponsive or unhelpful, particularly in handling returns and warranty claims. Overall, while some customers appreciate the cost-effectiveness and product performance, many express frustration with the lack of support and quality assurance, suggesting a need for improved service and quality control measures.

First time I've ordered a bike from BikesDirect. Bike was exactly what the website said. But the fork had a manufacturer defect and didn't fit the wheel. Larry at BikesDirect was awesome: responded within 12 hrs of my email, sent an upgraded fork that arrived two days later, and then immediately reimbursed the $43 it cost me to have the local bike shop change out the forks. That's the problem-free, customer-focused care you hope for! And because of that, BikesDirect will likely be our go-to for bikes for the family from now on.
I preordered the Gravity Bullseye Monster 2020 and it arrived early with excellent packaging.
I made an oafish mistake during assembly and Larry in customer service responded to my panicked email in under 2 hours.
The bike is fantastic and has components beyond its price. I've owned and ridden three fat tire bikes now (Giant and Specialized)
Cheers to a phenomenal deal, stellar customer service and the best way to spend $ (IMO).
Bikes Direct for the win! Thanks again Larry!
I've been searching for two road bikes for my sons for several months. I've been looking at local bike shops as well as Bikes Direct. Bikes Direct had the best value by far, so I ended up purchasing two Gravity Avenue bikes for my sons for Christmas. Unfortunately, both bikes arrived with multiple scratches on the paint, a broken shifter on one bike, and a bent front dropout on the front fork of the other. Here's where the superior customer service comes in. I exchanged emails with Larry, providing pictures of the issues. Received a response the same day (within one hour) with a resolution, replacement parts, and tracking info. Even though the bikes were a bit beat up upon arrival, the superior customer service provided will drive me to purchase my next bike at Bikes Direct. Many thanks Larry!
I recently purchased a Boris x5 fat bike. The bike arrived quickly, was packaged very well, assembly was fast and easy. The bike was unboxed, checked over, assembled, tuned and on the trail in just under 3 hours. Email communication was fast and friendly and all my questions were answered. My only complaint is that I waited so long to take advantage of such a great deal. I will be a returning customer for sure!
Hesitated ordering from BD for several years. Decided to bite the gullet and purchased a Motobecane Titanium. So far, very pleased with the bike - it compares quite favorably with pricier competition. Researched everything quite thoroughly before ordering, including the frame manufacturer; bike arrived promptly and was as described on the web site. I did have an issue with a ding in one rim and some cosmetic scratches on a decal Likely from shipping. Sent photos to BD customer service and received a quick reply from Larry. A fair resolution was offered which I accepted. Post purchase customer service is very important to me. Based on my experience, I highly recommend Bikesdirect.
I purchased my second bike from BikesDirect and could not have been more pleased. Just like my initial purchase, bike was good quality and almost fully assembled... a few minutes of prep and i'm out the door. Had one minor issue that Larry helped resolve with no hassle or hoops to jump through. Solid business and great customer service for such affordable prices!
This is a wonderful bike, with a few modifications because I'm picky. I use it as a street bike. I change out the tires ti smoother street tires, and change out the handlebars for a flat bar.
For $309, you cannot beat this bike. If I pay $2,000 for a bike, I'll cry about it like the crybabies here. For $300, I'll sinf the praises form the mountaintop.
Received the bike and everything was as expected. Great value for the price, especially at the high end with the carbon frame bikes. Everything was as advertised. Despite the fact it was free shipping, the shipping was really fast.
Had an issue with one small missing item and customer support was able to handle next day and handle all arrangements.
Great experience overall, next bike is definitely going though these guys again.
Thanks BikesDirect.com for helping those of us who truly love to ride be able to afford better equipment at a significantly lower cost! I have been riding my HAL5 Motobecane MTB for 3.5 years now and am SUPER HAPPY with its performance and durability. I ride very technical and as fast as I can up and down trails across the USA. I'm not a PRO but have been riding BMX (as a child) and MTB for many years and can truly appreciate having top of the line components included on my excellent HAL5 suspension system. I have told a lot of my friends to check out BikesDirect.com and also compare to local shops and other online places. No shipping and NO TAXES! Can't find a better deal and better bikes.
Thanks,
Vito L.
This company, and their bikes, are borderline fraudulent. I have a detailed, and extremely negative story to tell. I don't even need to embellish, as the story, and customer service, speak for themselves
I am awaiting a final email from Bikes Direct, before submitting my story, and final judgement. They do not even have a customer service phone number. All contact regarding defective equipment, is subject to email only.
I would hold off on purchasing anything from bikes direct, nor would it be prudent to purchase any of the bikes they sell.
The bike out or it was exactly what I expected. The shipping said 3 to 7 business days and it came in three. Had to email the company twice and I got super quick responses from Larry who is very helpful. Can't say anything negative about my experience.
Very cool bike, and Great customer service (Thank you Larry)! Very fast response to any issue I had.
I got the Motobecane Boris X5 with an XL frame in matte black. It is an excellent bike for the price. I am 6'3" 245lb and the bike does fit me but I replaced the handlebars with 5" riser bars because I prefer a more upright riding position. If you do the same, keep in mind that the cables are at their limit with 5" bars so you may want to try 3" or 4". I mostly use it as a cruiser but I do plan to try it in the snow this winter. I also replaced the grips with Bell ergonomic grips, I did this with all my bikes to prevent hand pain. Glad to see the pedals and seat are very good, there was no need to replace them. The front derailleur and front brake needed adjustment but nothing was damaged. I do like the paint and the logos are minimal and also look very good.
I ordered a Gravity HD Trail 27.5. Assembly was super-easy and it looks like it costs way more than I paid. Bike shops in my area had many jobs in the queue ahead of mine so I asked my brother-in-law to do the adjustments for me (as I am new to biking) but it seems he didn't do a good job so I plan to wait on a bike shop as gear changes are not smooth, etc. I don't think it's the bike. I think it just needs proper adjustments. I will see and let you know with an updated review. So far the suspension fork is very responsive with good travel, and the hydraulic brakes are great! The bike is advertised as having 2.25 width tires but it came with 2.10. I informed BikesDirect and they offered me a $25 refund. Larry handled the issue and was very prompt and professional. My experience with BikesDirect has been positive and I would recommend them.
I've owned a few copies of the Dawes Streetfighter, their entry-level flat-bar singlespeed bike. While its components are basic, they've been reliable enough to serve a daily commute over thousands of miles and have survived rain, snow, and the salt/sand mix that comes with it.
Recently, the front wheel was stolen, unsurprising given that I'm in a large city. But the timing was terrible, as it was a busy time at work and the bike cuts down the commute time considerably. As soon as I got home after the discovery, I sent a message over to BikesDirect. Larry answered, and informed that a near-identical replacement wheel was available for a reasonable price. I sent payment, and... had a wheel before half a week had gone by! It's hard to express what a relief it is to be back on the road so quickly - it helped take the sting out of a theft.
Post-sales service and support is important in these situations, and they've come through repeatedly for me. Really appreciate Larry and the rest of BikesDirect!
For a decade I have perused the Bikes Direct website ever curious whether those amazing prices for such amazing bikes and top level groupsets are legitimate. I've always been frustrated why bikes are darn expensive when the root technology (a twin triangle frame) hasn't changed in over a hundred years. My hypothesis was that the annual markups are primarily marketing rather than value. After my 20 year old trek was stolen, I decided to pull the trigger with Bikes Direct to test the theory that one can get a great bike with great components for far less (my thinking is that they all come from the same factory in Taiwan anyways). Well, consistent with the positive You Tube reviews I watched, my test supports my hypothesis. I'm thoroughly enjoying my flawless Motobecane Titanium Gravel bike with Ultegra Groupset. It arrived quickly and the setup was both fun and quick.
That said, I did goof the setup. This is my first thru axle bike and I mistakenly threw away one of the front hub end caps along with the protective plastic shipping wheel guard. That front wheel eventually became unrideable. Larry with Bikes Direct's customer service team didn't hesitate to replace the wheel (even though the fault was my own). At my request, Larry also looked into letting me buy a new front wheel (since it really was my fault). He came back with a very fair price and I couldn't be happier.
If anyone else has grown curious about the ever increasing price for new bikes when technology has tended to reduce pricing, I encourage you to consider Bikes Direct.
This is my first purchase from BD, fast friendly prompt shipping. The bike is very well built at half the price of comparable bike. My son is looking at ordering a bike to. Thanks again.
I've bought one bike from them thus far and I'll buy more. My 1st bike is still going strong 4 years later, despite being 1/2 the price of an equivalent bike shop version.
Delighted with my purchase of two Basecamp 29" bikes for my twin boys. My brother in law recommended Bikes Direct and after shopping around we decided these were a good deal. Bikes arrived quickly and in perfect shape. Assembly wasn't hard. We had a tube with a bad valve and Larry at customer service was great and quickly sent out a replacement. I will gladly recommend these guys!
I just bought the Titanium Ultegra road bike, list just under $2000. This is my 4th road bike from BD, and all have been good deals. Service has been excellent as well. I had a minor issue with the Stem on the Titanium bike and Larry sent me a replacement without hassle or delay. Chris at BD also a good communicator in sales. Bikes Direct is my "go to" place for new bikes. Picture of my 3 Motobecanes with Titanium in foreground.
Answer: I would recommend that you think about a hybrid bike first, as the tires are larger & the 26 inch wheels are a bit stronger. Also, you will be more comfortable riding on an upright position. If you like it, use it to loose weight while saving for a decent road bike.
Answer: Hi - the bike depends upon the type of riding you want to do and what you want out of riding. Do you want comfort? Durability? Speed? More upright riding position? Definitely want to look at bikes with larger tires as they would be more comfortable. The CycleCross type bikes are fast but have a bit larger tires for more durability and comfort than a skinny tire road bike. Check out the OmniStrada which have knobbier and larger tires than the regular cross bikes. They also have top tech tubeless compatible rims which you can easily convert with sealant and kit to being virtually flat free :) Check them out: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/cross_bikes.htm
Answer: No. The bike should come ready to ride.
Answer: I ordered after hours on Wednesday night, recived confirmation of payment via PayPal instantly. Email receipt received Friday morning.
