The overall reputation of Better World Books is mixed, with notable strengths in their extensive selection and competitive pricing, often praised for delivering books in excellent condition. However, significant concerns arise regarding customer service, particularly related to shipping delays, fulfillment errors, and inadequate packaging that often leads to damaged items. Many customers express frustration over the return process and a perceived lack of responsiveness from the company. While some customers remain loyal due to the ethical practices and commitment to literacy, recurring issues with order accuracy and support hinder a consistently positive experience.

I ordered one book from BetterWorldBooks, which arrived in excellent condition. It looks brand new, and I'm overjoyed. The book arrived within five days after my order. Looking forward to shop more. Thanks!
The book I ordered, paid for, and waited 7 days to receive wasn't the book they advertised and not the book I ordered. The image on the order was of Edition 5 with a brown cover and charged $74.68. They sent Edition 2 with a blue cover, written in 1981 with a completely different ISBN number which I could buy Thrift Books for $4.19. They said it was a hard cover. The book they sent was soft cover. The condition was advertised as Used Good. They book they sent had a tear in the front cover and on the spine. There are so many choices of book sellers out there, the minimum a customer expects is for the seller to be honest, reliable and do what they advertise they will do. I will never deal with this company again. Extremely disappointed.
DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE. It takes forever for them to email back if you have issues with your order (They don't have a live line for customer service). You want to cancel your order? Good luck! By the time they reply stuff will have already shipped. Returning is a hassle and expensive and could cost you a lot of $$$ (You have to pay return shipping). Better off using Amazon and Thriftbooks.
BetterWorld Books provides most books that one could want. The used books are priced at a substantial discount from the new ones. They are also in good condition which is always described on the website. Not only is a purchase good for the environment, it also contributes to literacy programs; it's a triple benefit!
I've ordered from Better World Books for years. Throughout the last year the quality of my orders has gone way done. I only order books listed as "very good" or "like new" condition but have received books with black marker all over the cover; bent front covers, among other issues. BWB has been responsive and issues refunds but there is something wrong when it happens over and over. The books are sent in packaging with no protection, stuffed into envelops, also causing damage. I don't want to have to spend my time messaging with them over and over after every order. Now the rewards program doesn't work for me and after back and forth messaging with them for a week nothing is resolved. It's just not worth my time anymore. They don't care and the quality continues to go way down. There is no efficient way to deal with problems.
Bought a book as advertised, was sent another that was obviously not the same! Company argued that it was in the fine print! Please do yourselves a favor and avoid this company like the PLAGUE!
I ordered 6 photography books. Only 5 arrived. Those 5 were all, to my disappointment, ex-library books. One book did not arrive. One book arrived without its hardcover case. One book arrived missing over 20 pages. I was only able to communicate via email which appeared to be automatic replies.
I would NOT recommend buying from them as they screwed up on 3 out of 6 books that I ordered.
Out of the last 4 shipments I made only one of them has arrived. I know there are shipping problems internationally, but it's ridiculous that 3 out of 4 shipments never arrived.
They will ship your books in nothing more than a thin plastic envelope that offers no protection whatsoever so your books will be crumpled and destroyed by the time they reach you.
DO NOT order from Better World Books, they don't care at all or respect what they sell or you the customer.
This company sells books by ISBN number only and will throw any stock photo up in advertising it, whether it is the book they are selling or not! When you bring it to their attention they say you really should only shop for books by their ISBN number. So wrong! Beware Beware
I honestly would've given it a higher rating except that they put these obnoxious barcodes on the side of the book and they could've easily Placed them around the bar code on the back of the book as opposed to the part of the binding of the book that faces out when you put your books in a library with a bad move by bookseller.
Here you can find a plethora of books in very good or almost new condition, at a reasonable price, and also feel good, since several books are donated to communities of need, based on one's purchase. However, the stickers placed on each book purchased are a pain to remove. I hope there is a good reason for those stickers, since this sours my whole experience with BWB, and deprived them of one star.
Love how inexpensive and speedy the delivery was from better world books, but why do they have to put the barcode stickers on the spine, covering the title and author? I tried to remove the stickers on several of the books but ended up ruining the spines in the process. Would appreciate if they would put the stickers on the back or inside the books, as they currently look so bad on a bookshelf!
I bought three books on the 1st October 2021 and have still not receives my order after two months two weeks down the line. I say they are a scam because their website does not offer tracking numbers for their orders. And what is the reason for no tracking details and just the order number. How does one go to the Post Office and ask for shipment without a tracking number?
As matters stand now, my status of the books I ordered reflects that I only ordered two books and not three as before. Initially, one book was to have been shipped from USA and others from UK. However, the one from UK does not reflect anymore and its just those from USA.
I still have email communication I had with them as proof to all this. What I don't like about the reviews appearing currently on their website is that they are on their webpage, and not from an independent one. This rings a bell, isn't it?
I purchased a children's Christmas book. It was rated very good [condition]. The pages: one tear, all pages warped, smell of mold.
The book cover had a large stain on the back and the mold spots on the back were undeniable. If the rating by World Books had been fair to good condition I wouldn't have written this and given the company a 1 star. Lying is not acceptable.
I only wanted the book because in the early 1980's I wrote a rhyming play for children with talking parts, short dancing, and singing based on the idea of this book and I wanted to see how close it was to the book. Same idea but quite different except for using 5 of the Santa changes used in the book.
Question what Very Good condition to this company means.
These scumbags are unprofessional and I will never buy from them again. They sold me a book. Good book. Arrived in mail fairly quickly. But I had asked immediately and politely for a simple receipt. They said since some people order books as gifts, they don't provide receipts. I told them it's not a damn gift, it's for me, please include a receipt. They said no. A simple receipt for a sale is standard and they flat out refused me. These people are scumbags.
I had a very poor experience with this company and their support team. I ordered a book and it did not arrive. I contacted them about this and was told "Customers must inform Better World Books of nondeliverey within 60 business days of shipping." I was unaware or this and didn't see any email saying it had been shipped. They will not give me a refund nor the book I ordered. I have emailed them several times and they send the same response every time. I will never use them again.
I placed an order of 5 books on October 16,2021 and was told via email I would receive the books within 3-9 business days. I received an email on October 21,2021 stating 1 of the books was unavailable and they would refund a portion of what I paid and the rest had been shipped. When I checked the website yesterday (10/22), the shipping information had not been updated so I messaged customer service asking for a status update.
Turns out, none of my books were available and they cancelled my entire order. Why would you sell books you don't have? If I hadn't contacted them, they would have kept my money and not notified me of any changes.
Very shady business practice and I do not recommend this site.
Be aware that cover design displayed may not be supplied, although publisher, ISBN, and year of publishing may be correct. Stock photos can be misleading. I purchased the displayed James Bond 007 'white spine' Live and Let Die, but received the 'grey spine' edition. Advised that there is no way to confirm as ISBN is over arching criterion.
Condition stated as good, but I think tear in cover made it fair condition.
The book cost the same as a new book and it is in poor condition when it came. I will not order from this company again.
Answer: You can probably, maybe able to see them on line somewhere, on an American government site for universities as they are out of the University of Indiana... that's my guess anyway.
Answer: I have only ever had one order go astray and they refunded the purchase as soon as I reported it If you still haven't received your order you should notify them. They will probably refund your purchase as it may have been lost.
Answer: It's a non-profit run by volunteers at several sites around the U.S. Many of their books are from public libraries & in good condition often. They also get donations from the public & some of those are in only Fair or Good condition, though lots are in Very Good/Like New or New condition. My favorite thing about BWB is their free book donations to very poor countries! I've bought from BWB for over 4 years & have bought close to a 100 books. Great non-profit!
