I started with Family Tree Maker and have been using Ancestry.com for years. I find it to be well worth the money and have found lots of info on my family. I guess if you expect something for nothing you might not be happy with it. I will continue using it for years to come.
I attempted to cancel my renewal two days prior to the renewal actually being done. This I attempted to do through there website - do NOT ever do this as it will not cancel your membership. I went to the website thinking that they would be an honest and upstanding website and found out differently. Went through their you are not a bot verification, chose the reason why I was cancelling my membership, provided them with a lengthy explanation on why, received the statement "we are sorry to see you go" and clicked submit thinking that was the end of it. I have a transcript of the whole conversation with the chat people on the charge. They stated that since I did not receive a confirmation email from the cancellation they are justified in making the charge, I advised them that I would be putting this review anywhere that I could so that they could not keep fraudulently charging people after they thought it was cancelled.
The service failed miserably to obtain documents pertaining to my mother and father and my mother's parents and siblings. It is an utter waste of money. Atop of that, they charged $25 to cancel their horrible service.
I ordered this straight for ancestry.com website. Vary unpleased. My DNA results did not have any background that I was expecting. When I called ancestry, they did not have a explanation for me why my DNA was so off base because my "ultimate Background" wasn't even included in the percentages. They also told me that there was no way they could have swapped my DNA or mix up of any kind. Like they do not make any mistakes, right? I even requested for them to send me another kit, I was also told that I would receive an email within 48 hours in which did not happen. $99 is a lot to loose considering there was no satisfaction on my side at all or even a communication of any sorts. Before you buy, PLEASE make sure you know about your ancestors of about their whereabouts before ordering, otherwise you will feel more lost after like I did.
I subscribe to ancestry one day then cancelled my subscription. The information I found on other sites, I would update in my tree over the years. Then I noticed when I look at the public tree there would be folks searching for the same thing, would have the exact same info I put in. I cancelled the next day not even 24 hrs. I stop getting hints. No refund either. You have to pay more money to see more documents, when I go to other sites FREE No credit card NO sign up, I can see more documents. It maybe a good site if you have the money.
I am heartbroken. Going to Ancestry.com used to be one of my absolute favorite things. The new format is awful. I much preferred the classic version. New ( and they claim "improved") version is slow and is not user friendly. It doesn't work properly all the time and when user is is trying to add new person to a tree, it doesn't allow. Really depressed. I have investigated years and years to Ancestry.
I detest the new format on Ancestry. It is not user friendly. The programmers who dreamed this up are idiots. Oh to go back to what we had before. There is no longer any joy for me to research on ancestry. Must look for an alternative. Obviously the programmers do not do research. There are not enough words to describe how unhappy I am. Bring back the old format I have been using for years. I am just sorry I couldn't rate it as 0.
Save your money it's all a scam! According to them I have no family and I know my immediate family has used them even my daughter who I know is my daughter does not come up? Did try to reach out to them with no luck! Plan and simple this company is a scam!
I did the DNA test 2 years ago and started tracking matches to make sense. I'm adopted and I thought this would help. They just redid the test and things are a mess. I do a surname search and not all matches show up. Kind of getting hard to trust them.
I cancelled my subscription, but the monthly bill continued to turn up on my credit card. I called them and they said that they had no record of billing my, EVEN THOUGH it was clearly showing on my credit card bill! They were very unhelpful at customer support. I am now trying to sort it out through my bank.
I ordered DNA Kit on Nov 23rd. On the 24th I received email stating on it's way. But tracking has not changed since that date and company will not respond to emails. My card has been billed but no product received. Horrible customer service and company is obviously a FRAUD!
I have subscribed to this site since 2005. It has gotten continually worse for content and service. I tried to unsubscribe last year and they still charged my credit card on file for $175. Since then, this card was hacked and I have had to cancel it. Has this happened to anyone else?
My son asked me to get an ancestry membership for him for Christmas. I went to the Ancestry site and selected the gift membership. I paid for it but the account came in my name. When I canceled it 20 minutes after I opened it, I was told I only get a $1 refund. Cost was $79.95 I tried to call the 800 number but was told they were not available: but they did provide any operation time information. I tried the on line bot but that was useless. I tried the ancestry expert and they sent me to another website where I had to pay for assistance.
I had my DNA analyzed some years ago and thought I would do it again as the technology is so much better now. But the results this time were much less precise, not more. Very generic references to Scandinavia whereas before the test pinpointed Sami and Nowegian, no information about my Dutch heritage this time (and I look just like my Dutch grandmother so don't be thinking anything), no mention of the Italian or maybe Greek (would love to know which one), or the 1% Ashkenazi Jew. Some general information about Germany (hey, thanks I didn't know anything about Germany!) when the prior test was more specific, namely Alsace.
Waste of money.
First off, they said that you may decline your free trial membership whenever pleased. But did not inform you while putting in your card information to decline membership you have to pay $35.00 upfront!? And if you do continue your membership you pay around 30 plus a month? Outrageous. I thought that this company was for the benefit of us, but infact it is not. It is nearly difficult to navigate the website and I got around zero to one leads to connect with my family. I know absolutely nothing more about my history of my family than I did before I began. I do not mean to be so negative, but this was very dissatifying and nothing like what they claim the website to be.
They gave no warning that the trial membership(2 wks) was about to expire and then they charged my credit card. I cancelled as soon as I discovered the pending charge.
When I called to get the charge reversed I was on hold for 20 minutes now. I still have not spoken to a live person.
When the site is up and running it really does have a huge amount of information. But honestly, it is up and running so infrequently it can be a pretty expensive subscription that only works about 40% of the time.
To say they use blanket results is an understatement. I already knew I had British and Irish ancestry, but I was searching to find out how much Native American I had... the results show 0%. This is complete crap, my Grandfather on my father's side, is 1/2 Native American, which is documented, yet they show 0%? And no, I'm not adopted or the mailman's kid. It appears they do a name search, and find a general area that somewhat matches, then give you bogus DNA results. Don't waste you time and money with Ancestry DNA!
I purchased a DNA test kit for a gift. One day later the kit was on sale. I requested a credit for the difference, but received a condescending email that I would not receive a credit and if I chose to return the kit, I would incur a $25 return fee. As a repeat customer, my request was reasonable, and their response was unnecessarily punitive.
Months after stopping my subscription I was surprised to see that my credit card was charged with a new membership. I had no knowledge of this card until it showed up on my credit card bill. After contacting Ancestry, I thought my membership was canceled as I was given a cancellation number. This too failed and I had to call again. I am greatly dismayed as I have enjoyed using the site, but this bogus billing is troubling and seems to be a common problem.
Answer: I agree... so many current complaints yet they seem to be more concerned with signing up new, younger members who are more deeply engaged in technology. It is business to these folks and they have to get younger people joining to make more money long term. Baby boomers though are their natural market and as more boomers retire and have more time and discretionary income they will be the ones who will be likely to join over the next few years.
Answer: Hi Joan, I see Karen above has answered your question regarding the old site. Full that box in Joan, tell them why you are leaving, give it to them straight. Write what you have put above, and more if so inclined. I have told them exactly what I think of their new so called experience! I think they have got a nerve inflicting this on us without even asking. They have made so many errors on the profiles, I know I shall have to check through every person on my tree, the mistakes they have put on are unbelievable, maps have been added that have nothing to do with the person. But the whole new set up is not enjoyable to use at all, the background colour is very hard on the eyes. I hate this new site with a passion! They should give us the choice of the format. From feedback I have seen, most of their long term customers much prefer the old site, Ancestry don't seem to realise what a great unique format they had, it was really classy, I loved working on it for hours and hours. They should listen to their customers, because they are going to be leaving their site in droves when the old ancestry is not available anymore. I shall use the old site as long as possible, then look for somewhere else to do my researching
Answer: Go to the right side of the page up at top where you sign in, and in the pull down menu there will be a place to go back to the old, classic ancestry, you know however, soon they are pulling the plug
