Airbnb's reputation is significantly marred by persistent complaints regarding its customer service and the quality of listings. Customers frequently express frustration over inadequate support, particularly in resolving issues related to cleanliness and safety at properties. Many report feeling unsafe or misled by inaccurate listings, leading to financial losses and dissatisfaction. Conversely, some users have had positive experiences with Airbnb Luxe, highlighting exceptional service and quality accommodations. Overall, while there are isolated instances of satisfaction, the overarching sentiment reflects a concerning trend of unreliable service and a lack of accountability towards both guests and hosts.

Airbnb is a great concept and I've used them multiple times. However, the last time I used them, in May 2019, I was screwed by their arbitration process. I followed the host's instructions, as I was required to do according to Airbnb Terms of Service, and placed a key in the mailbox of the host as I exited. The key was never found. The host took it to arbitration and I was forced to pay 2/3 of the cost of a locksmith to change the lock ($178 for my share). The host had five options for how he could have taken possession of the key. I had one option for how I could provide it to him. Somehow, Airbnb ruled in his favor. They never explained what I should have done instead. The provided no justification for the 2/3 - 1/3 split, and never indicated whether the host took any steps I recommended, such as speaking with the postman or seeing if there were cameras in the lobby that might have recorded things. Totally illogical and designed to keep the host happy at the expense of the guest. Look elsewhere. There are other services that will hopefully treat you better.
I found a property that fit my needs perfectly. The property owners rejected my reservation because they didn't want to deal with a new Airbnb user. They are listed as a Superhost, but I would disagree with that. Airbnb claimed they would follow up, but they lied about that.
I had a HORRIBLE experience with a home (NO a/c, 95 degrees outside), air bnb asked me REPEATEDLY to videotape the air as proof. There was no thermostat in the basement to receive reimbursement!
I didn't know that airbnb was also affiliated with rental companies for beach houses! Where is the customer protection when the "owner" cancels? All the protection leans to the home owner! I will not be using airbnb. My fam secured a house at the beach months in advance only to have it cancelled a few hours before check in! Wth. We had FOUR different houses pushed on us, otherwise we would have to cancel entire vacation (but had expectant kids and had already secured time off). VERY DISAPPOINTING
Do not buck with air BNB. I booked an entire space. And it up sharing this tiny space with the owner of the apartment. Air BNB will do nothing to fix it. I will never use the service again. I spent a fortune to tip toe through an apartment, when I could have gotten a nice hotel Room instead.
DO NOT RENT THROUGH AIRBNB! I rented a cabin in Pigeon Forge TN called the Game Changer, owned by James. The first night there we discovered a major bedbug infestation! We immediately went home and had to throw out luggage and car seats. Our damages totaled about $3,000 spread across 2 families. I reported our problem to the owner, who referred me to Airbnb resolution center for compensation. After jerking me around for weeks, they denied my claim and offered to compensate us for just a laundry bill which didn't even exist! I will never stay at a Airbnb property again! They should be shut down due to how they treat paying customers!
The host charged me $600 for a tiny stain on her table. AVOID this host at all cost: 7045 lanewood ave, Los Angeles, CA *******. The airbnb simply approved this charge, and basically said $#*! OFF if you do not participate our standard and requirements. I attached the photo of the stain that the host sent to Airbnb. You guys decide if that might cost $600.
I have used Airbnb more than 5 years without any issue, but I will never use it again.
We rented "Comfortable House" in Castroville, CA for the US Open in 2019. The owner cancelled our reservation 3 months later after all of the affordable homes were gone. Awesome job "Paul"! We'll never rent from you or Airbnb EVER AGAIN! We hope life brings you what you deserve.
After staying in a falsely advertised apartment I contacted Airbnb for assistance. The representative on the phone was rude and inconsiderate. I was told I had to figure out my own problems. On top of that I was overcharged for reasons unknown and have yet to find answers. My overall experience with Airbnb was beyond abysmal from their horrendous places to their unbelievably rude customer service. Will never use Airbnb again
If you book for 28 days or more they will charge you 100% of the cost of the entire booking no matter how much or how far in advance. They are inflexible about this. When I said I could rent same elsewhere with better booking terms they threatened me and the host.
We rented an Airbnb for our vacation in Kentucky last summer. Our host was wonderful and the house and location was perfect for our needs.
My children rented an Airbnb for a family reunion this August. Other family members have used this service as well.
However, after hearing about their antisemitic stance, we will no longer use this service.
Kudos to Texas who is taking a stance against the insane BDS movement!
My rating is based on Airbnb antisemitic stance, not on the many people who have property listed with this organization.
I used to think that these reviews were exegerated but I can assure you that they are not. Airbnb is a horrible service.
I booked a trip to another country. Upon arrival at the airport, my host sent me a message that there was a mistake and the appartment was actually not available. This was a horrible inconvenience especially since the language in the country was not english. Turns out the host didnt actually cancel so they took my money anyway.
I raised this to AIRBNB on 2 occassions. There was hardly any sympathy and instead i was advised that someone will get back to me on 2 separate occasions. Well it gets worse, the case has now been closed and noone has even attempted to get back to me.
This is called stealing from your own customers. So let me give you some options. You have other apps such as: VRBO, BOOKING.COM, HomeAway, FlipKey, HomeStay, OneFineStay, HouseSitting, VillasDirect, Outdoorsy, HometoGo, VacayHero, VayStays.
The point is there many options such as above. Do not risk an important trip with Airbnb TRUST ME. Booking.com is probably the safest bet out there. I certainly will be sticking with them from now on. As soon as i get my money back.

AIRBNB DOES NOT COVER ALL DAMAGES WHEN YOUR HOUSE IS TRASHED. I rented my house and the renter threw a 2,000 person party. My house was TRASHED. The damages to the house and furnishings and pool totaled $50,000+. Airbnb paid less than half, I spent hours trying to pull receipts, reports for insurance company, organizing the work to fix the house, etc.; they would not negotiate the amount and paid whatever they felt. AWFUL - DO NOT BELIEVE WHEN THEY SAY "DAMAGES ARE COVERED." Text me if you have any questions *******191.
They double book then wait until you get there and have no where else to stay then tell you it's accidentally double booked. The. They will offer you a smaller place, farther away and tell you they will give you a refund. Of course, you will never see the refund and never be able to get in touch With them again! SCAM BAIT AND SWITCH CON ARTISTS
I recently used AIRBNB to be a host for one of my small bedroom. The platform treats the host very nasty. They adjust my room's price by giving a huge discount over the service fee. You, as a host, almost have to unconditionally host a stranger and do their room service for free. If you don't accept their discounted price on you, your listing will not be recommended so you won't get a book. And also if you are not happy with just one-night booking because it doesn't even set off your cost, so wanna cancel the booking, guest what, they will deduct $50 from the paycheck you earned from your previous hosting. It SUCKS. Some people paid $10 per night expected a hotel service plus a luxury room and kitchen. You never know what kind of ridiculous expectation they will have over a $10 bill and you cannot even justify that through that platform. For sure, as a host, really think about it before you post your place. It was really an unpleasant experience for me.
This company allows their clients to post false property rental costs. I found an apartment for $134/night in Copenhagen Denmark. I selected my dates and the price was still $134/ngt. However, when I went to book the place the price increased $22 a night! I emailed the person who was the renter and he told me that he recalculates the nightly fee based on time of year, weather, etc!
Clearly Airbnb allows their clients the ability to scam users. I will never use them again!
I booked a honeymoon for my son through this company and just wanted to add an additional day. The female customer service representative was unfriendly, not accommodating, unprofessional, and rude. She had no skills to communicate with a customer. She never let me finish telling her why I called and in the end, she hung up. Looking at all the negative reviews, I would never have this company representing my property or refer this business to any of my friends.
Canceled a trip 3 months in advance and due to their "strict" refund policy option they give the host, I only recieved a $17 refund on a $175 deposit. What a horrible policy and a horrible host. I'll never use Airbnb again. I'd rather deal with a real company
Do yourself a favor and go to a hotel. I rented a place last March of 2017 and when we got there the bed has rodent drippings on the mattress. We didn't stay there at all and ended up renting at the Mariot in Emeryville. The hotel was only $100 more than their rental at airbnb. I called airbnb customer service and told them the situation while in the rental to ask for a refund. They made me call them a lot. I sent them photos and they said it wasn't enough. Long story short they didn't issue refund. I called my credit card company mailed them the photo and I'm glad chase refunded me everything. Don't expect Airbnb to issue a refund. Book a hotel instead to make sure or if you encounter a problem make sure take photos report it to them at once then ask refund from your credit card company.
I was looking for an appartement in Kefalonia, Greece, contacted the owner for some details he responded, then I made a reservation. SInce then no news. I contact Airbnb they told me to look for a new one since the appartement I cant find it any more... not a good first taste. So I hesitate to go further in a new reservation, I suppose they play games to change prices higher maybe? Owners are the types they dont like questions to prouve the pictures are what you ll really get?
Answer: AirBnB is the worst. You might be able to go to the resolution centre, but previous posts are correct. Watch your money with them. Once they make an error it's hard to get it back. You may have to go through the credit card you charged it to and even then the dispute process might take awhile. Hopefully, you have other money to use in the mean time or the date of your trip is at least weeks out? They are asking you to "verify your ID" so they can gain access to your linked in, Facebook and google contacts. They say it's a security measure to protect you and everyone else but it's not. They are pirating your info. They take your contacts and use it as a marketing tool for themselves or sell the contacts to other distributors. It's very common with sites like this now. If you want to continue using AirBnB you have no choice unfortunately.
Answer: Being a host, I can say that when things are going good, all is great, but if something goes wrong, as a host, you will not get the support from Airbnb that is promised. They do not stand behind their hosts, I find they like to a facade that all is great in the land of Airbnb. I have cancelled my listing and will not deal with them anymore in the future.
Answer: As a host & licensed realtor with multiple properties in both Los Angeles & Las Vegas which I book directly and also have listed with multiple vacation rental agencies, SAVE YOURSELF TIME, MONEY & AGGRAVATION by booking either DIRECTLY with the host or through other REPUTABLE Agencies, such as Roomorama.
Answer: I haven't been a host, but would certainly recommend that you read ALL the reviews here before getting involved with Airbnb. I can't think of ANY business of ANY type I would patronize that got a 1.5 star rating after 382 reviews.
Answer: They offered $25 discount of next booking I just chose to go else where
Answer: You don't. The only thing that you can be sure of is that if you have a problem Airbnb will be unreachable. They hide from dissatisfied customers and hosts alike. You are taking big chances when you deal with them. The benefits just aren't worth the risks.
Answer: No, you would be lucky and have to fight to get a refund if you cancel 1 day after you make the reservation!
Answer: Hello, First, the credit card co. Needs to be notified and will refund the amount spent. In turn, the cc co. Will backcharge. Airbnb is notorious for these types transactions and should be shutdown. Your son has learned a business lesson... research a business prior to do business!
Answer: This is the root of my problem with AIRBNB. They do not check to see if a host can legitimately rent the place they are advertising. In my experience, the host cancelled 48 hours before, claimed she was going to be evicted if she rented to me. I was only 3000 miles from home. AIRBNB offered me a 10% discount to rebook another place. I did not and will not use them again.
Answer: Susan's answer is very thorough and I agree with her. Even more important when booking places outside your country of origin to ensure you don't get a flea pit. Also, always look at the reviews, they are very important. If there is a really bad review, don't stay there. You need to check the locations online as well. You don't want to be in a bad, dangerous area... this just happened to someone staying in Philadelphia. If you have a problem, the AirBnB website is useless. Google the AirBnB customer service number from your location. Renee
