I ordered a text book, selected expedited shipping. 2 days later I got an email stating the shipping price would be doubled. I needed to "accept" this or cancel. In essence I would have paid more to get it at an even later date! I canceled and got it quicker and cheaper on Amazon!
I order a lot of books, sometimes one at a time, and sometimes a dozen at a time. AbeBooks has been the perfect clearinghouse for getting the best price and the best quality for the money. I especially appreciate that they stand behind what they sell. I have had to request a refund on occasion, and each time the process has been smooth and easy. AbeBooks is one of my favorite sites, and I shop there often.
I too purchased from this site but this is the last time! I recently purchased a book at their website. I received a book that was an international copy and it was shipped from Thailand and the ISBN number didn't match. When I tried to return the book, Abe dumped me on to the scamming seller who has several reviewers who got scammed exactly like they did to me. Abe doesn't care who sells in their site, don't get scammed. Go elsewhere for your textbooks.
I ordered a book from Abe Books and got it fulfilled by SecondSale. The book was to be in "Very Good" condition, but the spine was broke and it was a marked up library discard. Now they want me to pay return postage to SecondSale. Don't order from Abe Books unless you do it through eBay, where you have their buyer protection.
My total order was confirmed for one price but when I checked my bank statement an extra $21 was taken out by Abebooks. I talked to a representative at the bank to make sure it wasn't something done on their end. All fingers pointed to Abebooks. Representitives at Abebooks only gave me the runaround. I'm done with them.
The seller on AbeBooks.com scammed me. They sent a $2 dollar DVD instead of the $200 book I ordered. When I contacted the seller, they said they don't have the item I ordered but could probably track one down, if I gave them a few weeks. I immediately initiated a return process. They already received the item back but haven't refunded my money, a week later. At this point, they've had my money for a month, while I jump through hoops.
I contacted AbeBooks for assistance, via the web site, but haven't received a single word back from the company. Why would you buy anything from this site? There are no phone numbers to call for help. And there is no accountability for the sellers on the AbeBooks site. I was suckered. Won't happen again.
Bought a book from there website, went through checkout, all went well, received an email saying "order placed". Received an email the next day saying the book was out of stock at there normal location and there was an additional charge of $20.00 to get the book from the U. K. Poor way to do business, they should of sucked it up and paid the fee them selves for the screw up. Didn't pay there additional fee and took my business elsewhere. Won't be back!
This outfit is unreliable and crooked. I have been seeking a refund for several weeks for a nonshipment. I've made multiple attempts and all I get is runaround. Save your money... go elsewhere. If I could give no stars, I would.
I have been an ABE customer for over 5 years. I actually am a seller on ABE (ashamed to say so). I have ordered books on a regular basis. They do NOT require the sellers to record any tracking numbers. They do NOT make the sellers deliver in a reasonable time frame. It is a simple plan for ABE, take money from the seller as a fee to sell there, take money from every transaction, and then forget that they have any responsibility. It is not a company, it is a scam!
Abebooks is the best place to find out-of-print books to buy. The site lists books available from independent booksellers in a number of countries. I've been able to find and buy all kinds of out of print books, that you can't easliy find elsewhere. The booksellers have all been helpful and I've got my books quickly in the condition described in the listings. When you order through abebooks, you are ordering from an individual seller, so check their rating and reviews before ordering from them. I have had NO problems with any or my orders over the years.
I bought two books one still in progress and the other was mailed to my door in four days. I expected the book to come but not that early. I ordered the book in used but great condition and it was just as described. I was a little worried buying from them because of all the bad reviews. Sometimes you just got to go for it and hope you don't have the same bad experiences. Thank you! I'm satified
I ordered a book through Abe Books from a "book seller" located 20 miles from where I live. Abe Books claimed the book had been shipped, which it hadn't been. I called the"Bookseller" who at first couldn't find my order, then claimed the book had shipped the prior day, which I now doubt. And, the "Bookseller" turned out not to even be a "Bookseller," but someone or some business in a strip mall that had nothing to do with selling books. Every time I check, the "arrival date" changes. Now I'm being told another 3 weeks before the book arrives. Be wise and avoid this business.
Ordered a book from ergodebooks through abe books and received the wrong book. I was charged for the book I ordered, which was more than the book I received. Very hard to get a live customer service agent. They want you to communicate online but when I send an email I get the same canned email in response. I have to send the wrong book back at my expense and hope they'll refund the cost of postage. They do not provide postage paid return labels.
I ordered a book on April 18th, paid the extra for 3-5 day arrival. Waited a week, no updates on the tracking. I finally contacted Ebooksweb for help, since the confirmation email went through them. They contacted Abe Books, who replied stating to wait 2 more days, that the book shipped. Today was the 2 more days, I am leaving in the morning to fly to NY for my first grandchild's baby shower, and surprise, surprise, no book. Tracking shows that they FINALLY shipped it on 4/25. This book was to be a special surprise for my daughter and the baby, since it was my sons favorite when he was little, he knew it by heart by the time he was 4. The baby is to be named after him since we lost him in an accident 6 years ago. Way to ruin the baby shower and surprise Abe Books. Trust me, I will tell everyone I know to stay away.
Bought a "new" book from seller GridFreed. The description said it was new and shrink wrapped. Found pen marks throughout. They shrink wrapped a used and damaged book and sold it as new! What AbeBooks and the seller consider a full refund doesn't include return shipping or any duty, taxes or brokerage that it cost to receive the book. Therefore, returning the book is going to cost me close to $100.
I placed an order with AB on 7/25. AFTER I clicked "Pay", I was informed that the book may not arrive until 8/18! (The problem is, I'm leaving the U.S. on the 13th & wanted to bring it with me as a gift for my hosts.)
So I emailed AB & asked for expedited shipping - request denied. So, I wanted to cancel - told the item'd already shipped, which I naively believed! Turns out, the item didn't actually ship for 5 days! Then, in 2 days, it turned up in N Vegas, where it's been sitting for 9 more days!
I've sent multiple emails to AB "customer service" - answered with useless, generic replies. OSM Worldwide, their shipping partner, is equally useless and both try to pin their inefficiency on the USPS. Shame on them! I will NEVER order from them again in the future! I ordered a 2nd copy from eBay, and it has already arrived over a week ago
Abe Books is a lousy company!
If you go on there web page and type in a ISBN number the right book will come up but when you go to order if a different edition will pop up in your order instead. You won't know it's the wrong book tel you get it and need it. Then they will want you to pay to ship it back and won't even get the money back you spent to send it back. This place sucks.
If I could give them less than a star then I would. I bought a fairly expensive textbook which they sent to the wrong address. I was not aware of this till I asked for my actual tracking number since the one they gave me was bad. Once I asked for a refund they said that they couldn't give me a refund because someone signed for my package (although the person that signed for it was not me and was the resident of the home they send my paid textbook too). Before that, they said I should "ask my family about my package" because I'm assuming they thought that someone in my family took it. Once I sent them a photo of my correct tracking info showing someone not me signing for it and it arriving at the wrong house their wonderful advice was to "contact the people that signed for it". I should not have to be knocking on a complete strangers door asking for my package. It is completely unacceptable and so unprofessional. They are still refusing to give me a refund
The book that I ordered thru Abe Books was listed as a good condition book. What I received was nothing like that. The book I received had numerous torn pages, liquid stains and full of markings and highlights.
Abe's will take your money, assign a USPS pre-shipment tracking # to your order, send you an email saying that your item has shipped when it has not and then forget about you. If you are lucky, you might get your order in a month or so. Until then, your order will linger in pre-shipment HELL with no option to cancel or be refunded.
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
