We ordered a collection of four NEW books, but we were mailed four USED books. We returned them as instructed for a refund. They are now claiming they never received the returned books and are denying a $100 refund. Horrible customer service as well. We were very displeased with our entire experience.
I ordered a book, was sent the wrong one. After waiting for them to contact me back for over a week, they informed me I would have to send the book back and would not be reimbursed the full amount of the return shipping. I should not have to pay for their mistakes.
I have to say that I will not use Abe ever again. I ordered a NEW book for $16.00 and paid $4.00 in shipping charges. The book came weeks later and was a mess, it was VERY USED, frayed, and yellowed. This was not a new book and had not been so for a very long time. After returning to the seller I am wait for a refund. Very disappointed Abe.
Sometimes I received books on time, sometimes not and sometimes not at all! The times it worked was good but in the latest episode they took money from my debit card, claimed it was shipped from a supplier on August 23 to arrive about September 12. I contacted them a week ago and they didn't even acknowledge my request for more information. I searched for the Customer Service # and found it in the #2 font fine print. The guy I spoke to wasn't apologetic and neither was his e-mail. They told me too bad about your loss but NO REFUND, that's our policy because we aren't going to hold the carrier accountable on your behalf. LOUSY! I will not buy from them again.
They described the condition as "clean" on their website. When I got the book it was quite used. Lots of mark ups. The receipt enclosed described the condition as "fair." For what I paid, I deserved better. Amazon had fair condition copies of the book 25.00 cheaper.
I bought a book and it came in bad shape. The book was sticky on the cover and the hard cover was dented on the side. Even the pages where dented. I asked to return the book. Was told to send it to an address and that I would get my money back for the book but not both of my shipping cost to me and back to them. The book was sent back to me and I asked the seller why and no emails where returned. They also would not contact Abebooks. Abebooks wanted me to send it again with no guarantee of any of my money back at all. I am still in the process of get my money back a month later. I do not recommend Abebooks or it's sellers on the site.
Ordered an electronics book through Abebooks, the bookseller was "Bookdeals" from Lakewood Colorado. I paid for 3-6 day shipping. I contacted Abebooks 5 days later when I noticed my book hadn't even been shipped yet. All Abebooks does is automatically forward your email to the seller. I looked at their policies for shipping, returns, refunds etc and they all refer to the seller for these. The seller eventually contacted me saying he contacted Abebooks to learn how to do a PayPal purchase. I told them my PayPal account information. At this point it was 10 days out from purchase date. The seller eventually pulled the money from my PayPal. I asked that since I paid extra for faster shipping which had not been met, that they expediate my shipping. The seller then refunded my PayPal charge with no communication. Needed this book in a timely manner and wasted 2 weeks with Abebooks. Wish I checked this website first!
Got a later start than normal funding books. Ordered the book a week and a half before class started. Paid expedited shipping to make sure I would get it on time. It has now been over 2 weeks and I have not received the book. Abesbooks customer service is not helpful at all. Told me shipping delays were normal and I could try to contact the seller. Would not recommend th8s site to anyone.
After a long delay they sent me a wrong title book. And they don't process refund. I received an email that I should mail the received book with a traceable shipping method and the seller will only initiate the refund IF they receive the book. It's stealing. When you charge people $10 and then after a month, you send them a $1 book and don't accept to refund.
Ordered a Book thru AbeBooks and it was advertised as NEW. What was eventually sent me was a beat up second hand (maybe 3rd hand) copy. After numerous attempts to resolve this clear case of False Advertising, I just gave up. I learned my lesson and will never do business with AbeBooks again.
I ordered a new hardback book from Abe Books a couple of weeks ago. I paid $40.29 for this book, including shipping.
It was NOT new - there was a previous owner's book label inside the front cover. I just don't call that new.
It is also a book that came from a Book Club, meaning that the book is a smaller size than a regular book, the paper is of inferior quality and the binding is cheap, therefore the book does not wear well. Book Club publishers charge much less money for books than Regular publishers. There was absolutely no indication of this at the order site, just as they claimed that this book was new. I would never have paid the amount for this book that I did had I known. I will never recommend them, and certainly will never order from them ever again.
I have bought quite a few used books from abebooks and have never had a problem. I have never had to return a book, so I don't know how that would work. The books have arrived by the time specified and in the condition specified by the seller. I only buy copies rated good or very good. I also choose a copy from a seller that has a 4-5 star rating on the site.
I attempted to sell books on this site, but because it was a complicated (and expensive) process to set up the store, I asked them to close my account. They continued to charge my card even after the date they specified as the closing date of my account with them.
I placed an order in early March for a book to put in an easter basket. Total purchase was $32. On March 28 I received a DHL tracking number but it never updates. On April 9 I called DHL and they said they had never received the package. I tried to contact Abe but was told to wait until the 18th. I've now sent 5 emails and no response. This company steals your money and never fulfills your order.
I ordered a book I needed for a Bar Exam; ordered it four weeks in advance of needing it, so that it would come in plenty of time. Never received a notice that it had shipped. It didn't arrive by its anticipated due date, so I emailed the company, at which time they told me not only had it shipped but it had been delivered -- I never received it. Notified the company, and the seller is not responding at all. Horrible company. Fifty bucks for a book and have nothing.
I ordered a computer science textbook from the site that claimed to be in good condition. Not only was the book in poor condition, it was the "India Version" of the text that clearly said on the front cover that it was not to be sold outside of India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.
Now I'm stuck with an illegal, useless book.
They never sent the book that I ordered and paid for; furthermore, after I contacted them and complained, they never sent me the refund they promised for non-delivery. I wrote them again several times and got zero response. Hands-down, the worst experience I have ever had buying online.
I bought 5 different books from four different sellers on Abebooks. One book, from "Atlanta Book Company" was exactly as described, and arrived FAST. One book from another seller was in worse condition than described (very good, ha! More like acceptable) but it's so hard to find one I didn't complain. Two books from "Owlsbooks" were in terrible condition (also described as "very good"), and I was refunded. And "Discover Books" (but shipped under "Pro Quo Books"), shipped a completely different book than what I ordered, and I was refunded as well. Sure, I got my money back, but it was a complete waste of time. If 4/5 books aren't going to be as described, what's the point shopping here? If the there was any kind of feedback system so people could see if they can trust a seller to describe a book properly, it would be a huge time saver. Sellers do this because many people will just take the $4 loss and never complain.
I ordered four books. Two came without incident although it took nearly two weeks for them to get to me. One book never arrived. The shipping label was created but the item was never delivered to USPS. The last book never came, they sent a similar book, not the book I ordered.
I ordered a text book, selected expedited shipping. 2 days later I got an email stating the shipping price would be doubled. I needed to "accept" this or cancel. In essence I would have paid more to get it at an even later date! I canceled and got it quicker and cheaper on Amazon!
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
