I ordered a textbook, ONE textbook, at check out it said 19.99 which was right. I hit proceed and it charged me for 2 books. It also said an electronic copy would be available immediately which was a blatant lie. I didn't receive electronic access for 24 hours and totally thought I had been scammed. Wouldn't recommend this (honestly I haven't even gotten my book yet so we will see if it even shows up).
I ordered a video game guidebook for my son for Christmas. I even paid extra to make sure we rec'd by Christmas. After I ordered the item, I went online to see the reviews for Abe Books and was very concerned. I thought that maybe I had made a big mistake and spent money for an item i would not receive. Much to my surprise, my item arrived the day it was scheduled and the book was in great shape. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised and VERY happy with my purchas.
Avoid Bayside Books in particular.
My order was lost in transit. I was patient because everything has been delayed with COVID, but apparently I then fell outside their 30 days window so I'm not entitled to any refund or to send the book again. No apology either. Horrible experience - will never shop on AbeBooks again.
This is a terrible company. They sent the wrong book and then when I tried to have the book refunded they claim my returned book was never sent. Horrible service. They actually closed my claim and told me "too bad". The book I purchased was rare and expensive. These people are the worst kind of internet business. Take your business elsewhere.
I ordered a book with my VISA.
After almost 2 weeks, they sent me an email showing that they got an error with the payment!
When I contacted them they said that they refund the cost because the seller has already sold the book! And it's no longer available.
I lost 2 weeks waiting the book!
I ordered Redstone Diary desk calendar for close to full price. They sent me the one for 2020.
Abe.com, I believe, is owned by Amazon. I ordered through Amazon, paid with an Amazon credit car, and received shipment from Amazon. But Amazon does not include it among my purchases, and there is nobody to contact to complain. I guess they own the world. They are not to be trusted.
I ordered a textbook and answer book from one of their sellers. The seller cancelled the textbook and sent me the answer book. What good is an answer book with no textbook?
Most importantly, their seller ratings are worthless. There is no way for book buyers to provide feedback, their "Bookseller Rating" is based purely on their internal data, which seems pretty meaningless.
I am interested in going after this fraudulent company. It appears that everyone has the same consist experience, order their books, no books arrive, and then you have to chase them for a refund! Ultimately, you get no response, conclusion, we have all been ripped off! This is a scam! I don't care about my refund now, what I care about is shutting them down, so no one else is ripped off. Plz contact me if you feel the same, and we can worked together against these people! If you care, my email address... *******@gmail. Com
I purchased the teacher edition of a math text. I received a book with only chapters 11-14. When I contacted Abe books through there customer service mail (there is no phone number) they never responded. I chose to simply return the book as I had no value to me. I put in a return through Abe books and when I went to the post office, was told that the address I was given for K12 books did not exist.
I have bought dozens of books thru Abebooks. Their standard is first rate. The books are in the condition as advertised. If the order is not as advertised or is lost it the mail (very, very infrequently) they are quick to refund your money.
I even contacted the seller before to confirm it was definitely a new book.
And they sent me a book with a worn cover that was ripped on the corner.
And the title page was soiled.
Buy books in person. This was a sham.
I was looking for a book published in 1921 which was in my father's collection. I wanted a copy for a friend's son. Sure enough ABE Books had one, advertised in very good condition.
I ordered it.
The communication was super.
The book was received before I anticipated.
The book IS in very good condition and will make a super gift, as planned.
I cannot say enough great things about this book seller. I will be back just to browse!
Thanks for helping me out.
I don't have the ability to add a picture... sorry
In this website you can find find lots of books for way cheaper prices than other websites. And until now (bought 6 books) i never had a problem. This website is really useful for students, you can find new and used books for non comparable prices. Thanks AbeBooks!
Desperately ordered three books that I could not find anywhere else. Ordered them on 10/29/18 all with 2-8 day shipping which meant I should have gotten them around 11/7/18. However, all confirmations said 11/10/18, not a problem maybe there was a processing time that I over looked. NOPE! It is 11/15/18 and I have no books, no tracking info, no updates, no confirmation of shipping, no attempts at delivery, nothing. DO NOT USE THEM!
Don't expect the image of the book you buy to match the book you receive. Working with customer support was miserable for me, and more time consuming and troubles than its worth. Never again will I go through AbeBooks. Better off buying directly from a seller like Thriftbooks without going through AbeBooks. Needless to say, I won't do business with or recommend AbeBooks.
I hope this is helpful to otherwise and saves you from disappointment.
I have ordered only two books from AbeBooks, at different times, and never received either, though I wasn't charged. Amazon seems the answer, and I do order from them occasionally, but do people realize that Amazon owns AbeBooks? They acquired Abe in 2008, and are obviously content to let this bad situation continue.
I ordered a hardcover book (which comes with a much higher price tag) and received a paperback. I initiated contact to remedy the situation, they did get back to me timely but I missed the email, and by the time it rolled back around on my to do list, I was outside of the 30 day window and they wouldn't even consider exchanging my book for what I ordered and paid for (not even asking for a refund). I just think that's poor customer service. I understand I was outside the window, but I'm surprised a business wouldn't want to make exceptions to the rules to do right by their consumers on an error they made.
I ordered my book on June 1st. The book was supposed to be here 5-14 business days. It's June 19 and my online course starts tomorrow and I have yet to receive the book. Never ordering from AbeBooks again!
Some sellers ask for extra money, some for extra shipping (the book is heavy), so sellers are dishonest in the aspect of pricing. Misleading descriptions, books may have a lot of acid damage or pages missing that they don't tell you about. Misleading.
We ordered a collection of four NEW books, but we were mailed four USED books. We returned them as instructed for a refund. They are now claiming they never received the returned books and are denying a $100 refund. Horrible customer service as well. We were very displeased with our entire experience.
Answer: I've not had the bad experiences of the previous reviewers. That said, choose your sellers carefully. Just as on ebay, etc., check the reviews of the seller. One of the sellers I use often on Abe is Hippo Books. They sent me an email recently that the book I ordered from them was not the advertised quality and that their packers caught the mistake. The book was not salvagable and was regrettably destroyed. They checked their stock and did not have another copy at all. They promptly refunded my money without me having to ask. They were apologetic and I have since then purchased other books from them with dependable and accurate results. Another seller I use is Owls Books. They refunded my money after one email to them when I complained that the condition of the book I received did not match the advertisement. Again, absolutely no hassle and good results since then. I like to use sellers in close proximity to my residence or at least in the same state. Your experience will, as always, will depend on your due diligence as a buyer.
Answer: Avoid this business if you can. I had been told by a Professor that they were a good site to purchase from - NOT! The "Bookseller" keeps changing the shipping date after first denying they even had an order for me from Abe's. Not worth the couple of dollars you MIGHT save.
AbeBooks has a rating of 1.6 stars from 715 reviews, indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied with their purchases. Reviewers dissatisfied with AbeBooks most frequently mention customer service, tracking number and credit card. AbeBooks ranks 39th among Used Books sites.
