AARP canceled me
September 22, 2023

Got a letter in the mail from AARP stating my roof was needing to be replaced and had a cancelation notice stating I had 2 weeks to replace my roof. I had a roofer come out to inspect my roof and replaced the ridge cap and gave me a cert for 15 years warranty with a letter to insurance company. AARP'S response was sending me another letter stating my insurance has been canceled. Their justification was a drone picture over my house with no in person inspection. I am 75 YO in stage 4 cancer treatment and have 3 month to live and after e planning all that and spending g money on a roofer they had no compassion for their 15 year customer who has never been late on payment. So I would highly consider not doing business with a company like this ever.

Boycott AARP
August 28, 2018

I was looking at a copy of AARP in the doctor's office. On the cover was a picture of Hanoi Jane Fonda. AARP is for older people like myself. 90% of Vietnam vets are my age and 90% of them hate Jane Fonda. How much in tune with people my age can they be?

Modern Snake-oil sales
January 5, 2021

A wolf in sheep's clothing. They say the are politically bipartisan but their actions DO NOT support that claim. They say they want to help the elderly, they want to separate the elderly from their money. They condone & support illicit behavior from their "partners". AARP does NOT care as long as they get their share of the ill gotten loot. The Hartford lies. They wrote to me saying I could save $449 a year on my auto insurance. Not up to $449 or any other amount. I have the letter in my hand. I called them, who wouldn't? Had I insured with them my yearly cost would have increased by over $1,400 a year. More than double what I have been paying for years. When reported to AARP they could not care a less. I regret the day I ever gave them any information about myself. They said they would not share it, I said no marketing materials, I get marketed DAILY. They need to be investigated by the government. They are illegal & illicit. STAY AWAY, THEY WILL DO YOU NO GOOD.

They gave me 2 % back on dental charges in Feb,. Thursday I charged almost 3000 on this card. It did not reflect 2 percent cash back as promised. I was on hold with Rep whose name I wont mention because Im embarressed for her ( by the way she clueless and not knowledgeable) for almost an hour. They basically had no answer for being liars. It is horrigle for a company syuch as this one to lie about their rewards program and then have ignorant people work for them; for these to not be in a position to help a customer. I will get a refund from my Dr and use my favorite Card capital one, or even my WELLS fargo. THis card is cut

I have been a member fir more that 20 years. I remained member only to support the Senior cause. Hiwever, in my opinion, it's purely a commercial venture in the name of seniors. Recently I and my wife took online driver safety course. We were overcharged by Ignoring their ownPromotional and membership discount, Even after completing The course, we were unable to download or print the certificate due to their glitch. We wrote fir weeks but got no response, no solution and no apology. Calling was useless as no one picked up the phone under the excuse of COVID 19.
The most frustrating aspect is lack of accountability, communication and apathy towards the members.

Misleading benefits and poor customer service
September 1, 2022

AARP vision benefits page lists $55 vision exam with Target Optical as one of their benefits. I signed up with AARP to get that benefit and made an appointment with Target, but when I arrived for my appointment, the doctor said he knew nothing about the benefit with AARP and the exam will cost between $145-$185. So I had to leave. I wasted two entire afternoons trying to find the best eye exam price and narrowed it down to the AARP -Target benefit only to discover that it doesn't exist. When I called AARP to ask them about it, the agent was also not aware of the benefit, but did find it very clearly laid out on their website. I told her how much time I lost for the false benefit and said good customer service offers more than an apology - they offer some sort of compensation, however small, to not lose that customer and all the people that customer will talk to. Her supervisor apparently told her to tell me that they don't offer any compensation.

Huge Marketing Operation
January 18, 2023

It has been our experience that AARP does not help seniors. In fact, most of the services and commodities they push actually drives costs up since AARP has to get their piece of the pie. The biggest joke is the AARP Advantage Plans. They don't cover many of the things straight up Medicare would even though they are required to do so and they won't cover many drugs. They say they have a "Doctor" who reviews claims and appeals but I doubt it. When asked for the name of the Dr and his/her credentials they ignore the request. In my case, this so called "doctor" went against the judgement of thress Board Certified Specialists, two GI and one Internal Medicine Dr, and that's without even seeing the patient. I would say that is pretty dubious overall. I guess we'll learn who this "DR" is during discovery.

Getting an AARP membership is a bad idea. Why? You pay THEM. Then THEY get paid AGAIN to sell your name to companies like Geico, Hartford Life, etc. Then YOU get bombarded by loads of companies by phone, email, and snail mail, wanting more of your money. And those companies WILL NOT take you off their lists, no matter how often you ask. And when you quit your AARP membership, the junk mail just keeps coming, because now they have your name! Thanks AARP!
Benefits are few-some deals here and there that can usually be found elsewhere online. I wish I had never joined, because now even AARP won't take me off their list! They are really doing a disservice to seniors.

MY UHC
February 3, 2020

UHC prescription drug plan while cheaper is worthless. Absolutely do not choose the MY UHC prescription drug plan unless you prefer waiting for weeks to jump through the hoops to get a "specialty drug." Customer service totally lacking in knowledge, as a last resort they transfer you to the "specialty" to complete your prescription. In our case nearly six weeks of back and forth and still no Enbrel or the generic. Switch to Humana or any other but do not select UHC.

I signed up originally in 2016 and have up getting anything out of the membership. I tried again in 2023, same tired promise. I'm poor and needed help with medical rides, gym membership and prescription discounts. Negative hits for all. The prescription discounts are poor. The prescription costs are three times what singlecare can get the meds for. The restaurant benefits are for unhealthy food for diabetics, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. I don't want to eat that type of food anymore. AARP is for affluentence, not the financially constrained. AARP could start to work on these inadequacies by sending surveys. I've never gotten one in 7 years.

USELESS
April 5, 2020

This is one of the most useless organizations I have ever been a member of. I couldn't find any assistance on any of the products or services I was looking for. And the products and services they were pushing to get you to buy or organizations they try to get you to join I can find on my own without their assistance. So I dropped out after 3 months of membership.

It seems like AARP is. Scam! How dumb are you to even try to get them act in your benefit. Have you seen your Medicare go up. Did you see an increase in your membership! You have to understand AARP. Dosnt care about you! Have you called About thier so called car insurance. Alot more expensive then what you get from an agent. Vacation prices Are higher medical is higher. Oh but you get that Free coffee and 10 per cent off in certain purchases. Wouldn't you rather have that in your retirement
Wish someone would have the balls to become a true advocate for Seniors!

Not necessary
January 10, 2017

I signed up to see if I could save on something. As I looked to all the offers, every single one is offered free to you free as you turn to a senior citizen directly throught the bussiness.
The life insurance and the car insurance are way higher than the regular insuran throught many companies. One phone company offered a saving of a nickel, yes you heard right. So, why pay for what my supermarket or favorite restaurant can give me directly for free. Only dummies do that.

AARP is just a scam
October 2, 2023

I used AARP to rent a vehicle a few months ago; ended up paying more as an AARP member than I would have without mentioning the membership. Just completed the AARP Hartford auto insurance quote. Was quoted a price three times what I am paying now. Am of the opinion that AARP is nothing more than another scam targeting the elderly. I will not renew my subscription.

Jitterbug/ Phone - UGH
February 27, 2019

Bought a "smart" phone from Jitterbug after seeing your ads. Horrible situation: phone never worked, kept dieing on me mid conversation. Went to return and problems became bigger. They told me to send it to them and they would credit me after examining phone. They refused any service after they got the phone. I questioned their "time" charges and they sent me the most "insane pages of "charges" that each ended in ZERO. They said I agreed to this plan but consent was given over the phone and this was no plan I accepted. No contract papers were ever sent to me. After numerous phone calls they agreed to refund me $100 if I sent the receipt and papers I had - I sent and never heard from them again. It has been nearly 3 months (I have been sick) and I guess I write it off as they appear to have written me off. Please beware of this company and their shady practices.in your ads.

I renewed our membership for AARP recently. I tried to do it online. I should have just mailed it in. I know that I marked it for 5 years to save money, but it jumped me down to one year. I called to talk to someone about it. The person was so rude. I think that I must have interrupted her dinner. I couldn't understand what she was saying, so she repeated it rudely. She was rude in everything she said. I told her that I marked the 5 year. She said no I didn't. Sorry. I told her that she was rude. Not sure if we will renew.

Having been a member of AARP since turning 55, am now 72, I have consistently noticed a greater and greater relationship with United Health Care Insurance. The amount of money this company gives to AARP is certainly a large factor in that relationship. However, the founding principle of AARP is to serve it older membership in ways that benefit them not just AARP. What many seniors are not aware of is that Medicare supplements have to offer the same basic benefits. For example, plan E does not require copays, or in network providers. The only difference between various insurance companies for this policy is price. United HealthCare is among the most expensive. What AARP should be doing is letting its members know that they should check with an independent insurance agent to see what the best price vs benefits they can get for their supplemental.
