I joined AARP when I turned 50, back in 2007. At that time, I paid for a lifetime membership because I prefer to make a one-time payment instead of annual payments that will accumulate to more than a one-time payment amount.
Everything was fine until I received a letter in June of 2020 stating that my membership had expired. I called them to discuss my status, and was told that $74 had been sent to Discover (a card that I cancelled a decade ago) back in 2013. At that time, AARP changed my status to a monthly payment, and since I would still be a couple of hundred dollars ahead in payments, they proceeded to use that money to pay the annual fees until 2020.
I called on June 22nd, and explained that I didn't request a partial refund and hadn't received one - and if I was going to ask for money back, I would have cancelled my membership and ask for a full reimbursement. Why would I ask for such a small amount back?...
The service person spoke to a supervisor and said that it had all been fixed, my lifetime membership was restored, and to call back to verify in a week or so. I called back on July 6th, and spoke to a service person who told me that my membership had expired, and if I wanted to renew my lifetime membership, I would have to pay (again) the full amount for a lifetime membership going forward - another $200+ amount. I was starting this conversation again
I asked them to look at their notes from my June 22nd call, which they acknowledged that they had on file, but they wouldn't budge from their new position. They said to call Discover if I had not received the partial reimbursement back in 2013.
So I decided to not make the payment, and asked them to drop me from all future correspondence.
