Having been a member of AARP since turning 55, am now 72, I have consistently noticed a greater and greater relationship with United Health Care Insurance. The amount of money this company gives to AARP is certainly a large factor in that relationship. However, the founding principle of AARP is to serve it older membership in ways that benefit them not just AARP. What many seniors are not aware of is that Medicare supplements have to offer the same basic benefits. For example, plan E does not require copays, or in network providers. The only difference between various insurance companies for this policy is price. United HealthCare is among the most expensive. What AARP should be doing is letting its members know that they should check with an independent insurance agent to see what the best price vs benefits they can get for their supplemental.

The AARP discounts for auto insurance, hotel bookings, and car rentals are less than useless. Non-affiliated service providers beat AARP prices every single time I've gone for these services. If AARP offers something else that's worth the membership, then someone please enlighten me.

Based on AARP's recommendation I purchased Medicare Part D fro United Healthcare. They spent 3 months telling me that I had other coverage from the employer that I retired from. We finally got that worked out and I find out that they have been overcharging me since August 2019 through April of 2020. After spending 3 hours on the phone and finally talking to someone they said sorry nothing they can do and they will continue charging me too much. Do not make the mistake of trusting an AARP recommendation or buying insurance from United Healthcare.

Total Scam
January 8, 2021

AARP sells your personal information to third rate company's! AARP constantly fills my mailbox with junk mail. Even though I cancelled my membership over 2 years ago when I realized that all the company's
Recommended by AARP were third rate company's and very expensive. It was 8 years before I realized
That never received there free gift. However I have seen plenty of there free gifts still in the plastic wrappers in my buildings dumpster!
I live in a huge (Seniors only) development called Century Village in Boca Raton, Florida When I shared this experience at our board meeting I found out that dead residents were being renewed for 5 years and there grandchildren were stuck with the junk mail!
After I told them to stop emailing me over 2 years ago and to stop giving my address out!
This week alone I RECEIVED 5 forms of correspondence!

What Discounts?
January 31, 2020

As a new AARP member I recently joined to take advantage of their travel discounts. After clicking on a travel link through one of their many emails to look up a specific cruise, the price was the same whether I went through AARP or just used one of many travel sites. EXACTLY the same, to the penny. So where's the discount? I feel I've been ripped off. Here are 2 more examples of no discount that I pasted to prove my point: These appeared on both pages.

Book your cruise with Expedia and earn up to 17% off on select hotels before you set sail.

Book your cruise with AARP Travel Center and earn up to 17% off on select hotels before you set sail.

Travel- just don't do it
September 24, 2023

The price is competitive with others BUT: Example 50 dollar Visa card for booking packages through them and Expedia is not real. We never received the 50 dollar Visa card and when we write either one (several times) never a response. So go elsewhere we did. Dissapointed in AARP in that they never did respond.

Scaming seniors
March 10, 2022

Recieved offer to join aarp with 3 peice luggage organizer set as a thank you. They send a picture of what appears to be 3 piece luggage set. Problem is even the biggest piece you receive you can barely fit a pair of shoes in. Totally misrepesented items you receive as free gifts. I will not be rejoining and will tell all other people i know not to join as aarp has become scam artists of seniors.

Scams from AARP
September 2, 2020

Their Life Insurance Company recommended by AARP discriminated against me for my height/weight. AARP should investigate companies they recommend before offering it to their members. It is their reputation that is being questioned.

Bought an AARP plan covering my wife and I and a couple roadside assistance plan. Tried to use it and received multiple charges to my credit card whicg no one could explain over 4 calls to Indian Call Center where no one spoke enough English to understand. Had to cancel a cresit card and wait for a new one because of the fraud. I highly recommend YOU DO NOT get this service. You will be disappointed and likely robbed.

Disgraceful
October 1, 2019

AARP supports and distributes a United Health supplemental Hospital Insurance. However the Plan was discontinued in 2013 but AARP continues to mail and encourage existing members to enroll on an annual basis. My father is 77yrs old and has been enrolled in this old Plan for 19 yrs. This is an abuse of power and false advertisement my dad would have stopped this Plan in 2013. AARP continues to mail as of today and United Health continues to engage in this conspiracy and revolving abuse of retirement savings to senior citizens. Please be ware. I have filed a BBB Complaint on this matter. Feel free to view yourself.

The AARP magazine has not been a great benefit to the ageing community in my opinion in the past. I had not purchased my subscription sooner because of pages full of medical treatment and vitamins ads. Today I received my August/September edition and I had valuable information to read. Thank Your AARP keep up the Good Work.

Fed up with sales calls!
October 12, 2017

WARNING! DO NOT ASK AARP FOR INFORMATION ON HEALTH INSURANCE! I filled out the contact me form at their website and have been inundated with sales calls every single day to the tune of 12-20 calls each day,. Even though I have asked each caller to take me off their list, the calls keep coming fro different numbers all over the country. I finally called AARP and was told it would take 2 weeks to have my number removed from third party vendors. I am so disgusted with AARP for allowing this happen! Why would I want to renew my membership? I thought you were here to help seniors.

Spammers
August 8, 2017

What can I say nice about AARP? Hmmm, nothing at all.
The only people making money is the AARP lobbyists in DC who are suppose to be helping senior citizens.
This organization is the worst when it comes to postal mailings. 2-3 times a week they try to tempt you with a "free" gift to join. Try to get off their mailing list is something to behold. This organization needs to stop spamming people and tend to business in DC to help ensure seniors are not taken advantage of, but then they would be doing quite the opposite. THEY ARE THE ONES TAKING ADVANTAGE OF SENIORS.
Insurance coverages from health to auto etc is much cheaper on your own than going through AARP who in fact get a percentage finders fee when you buy from them. Travel deals are no different.
Save your money, don't join this useless organization. Membership is down, wonder why?
