I've booked many trips on Expedia and would like to give then a higher rating, but the customer service is just not good enough.
I've booked packages and flights on this site as well as purchased excursion tickets and always find great options and competitive pricing. I've used Expedia for trips from Canada to Europe and the USA.
Sounds fabulous, right? Well it is as long as nothing goes wrong. Therein lies the rub.
On a trip to Orlando my family purchased $1200 worth of theme park tickets through Expedia. Their policy was that the tickets would be at the resort for us when we arrived. Not so much. There were no tickets and no messages from Expedia.
Fast forward 2 hours later and I'm still on hold with Expedia, having been passed to 2 different people and still no resolution. How frustrated would you be to have traveled all day and get to your destination but no park tickets? Everyone wants to go to the park and I'm sitting on the phone for what felt like a week.
Finally, they admit that they can't help me. They just can't figure it out for some reason. I'm asked to fax a copy of my Expedia receipt to them and they would process a refund within 4 -6 weeks. Wow! What a huge pain in the arse.
We wound up having to repurchase park tickets... gee I'm glad we have a ton of money and could spend another $1200. (Insert sarcastic tone)
We did get our refund about a month after returning from Orlando.
Another bad experience story; we had a single night hotel booked (3 star) because we couldn't get into our resort until the following day. We arrived lat; about 11:30 pm but the hotel knew we would be there at that time... "Oops, sorry but our hotel is fully booked so we put you in our sister MOTEL across the street."
Sister Motel was a DIVE. I'm talking very shady appearance and not updated since the 1970s. Yuck! We had no choice so we had to stay there. The door to our room was such a poor fit that we could see light in the gaps all the way around. We slept, got up and got the H-E-double-hockeysticks outta there. I called the customer support line the following day and was told there was nothing they could do for me. No refund, no credit, no apology. Sigh.
Moral of the story, Expedia is good in theory and if you don't mind taking a risk you'll get a great deal. However, if you're not the gambling type then look elsewhere. Personally, I stopped using them after the dive motel incident.
