Yelp Advertising is a Bad Choice

I created a Yelp for Business page and was immediately contacted by an Account Executive offering "free" advertising for a month. I made a bad decision and took him up on the offer. Making the claim repeatedly in our call that I could cancel any time without charge, the services would equal the $100 of "free" advertising he was offering, which turned out the be less than true.

After putting my page at the top Advertised spot I started receiving increased calls, web traffic and emails. The traffic was almost 100% scams. Calls telling my SSN card had be "suspended" were a daily occurrence. Emails with links to Craigslist voicemails, which while ironic were only phishing for control of my computer. Web contacts offering increased web traffic for only $49... were the majority of what Advertising on Yelp got me.

Then nearing the end of the billing cycle, I contacted my Account Executive asking for everything to be turned off before things billed, per his statement that I could do this. This email was never replied to. Phone calls and subsequent emails all apparently went to the same black hole because no one turned off services, returned a call, left a message, or replied to an email.

So I turned off the services... and was billed over $100 for my "free" advertising.

Searching the Internet I found a Yelp Customer Service number. Called and was informed my Customer Success Team could be reached at another number. I called them and learned that this was my mistake, because obviously I had misunderstood the Account Executive. They would do nothing to correct the issue.

Don't make the mistake of advertising on Yelp.

I visited the restaurant on a Sunday after church with my family. We only went here because our usual spot nearby [Caravelle] was booked for a wedding. What a mistake. To start, the wait person [older female] did NOT speak good English. She wasn't friendly; just there to take the order. I ordered green beans with beef. I'm 100% sure that I ordered beef. Anyway, when my food came out my dish was green beans with chicken. I kindly reminded the waitperson and she swore me up and down that I did order chicken. I insisted that I needed what I ordered. She grabbed the plate from under my hands and took it back and within minutes comes back and almost throws the plate with beef onto the table. Long story short, this person NEVER stops by our table again, looks at us... nothing the entire time we are there. We did not get drink refills, no to go boxes [we asked someone else] nor did we get a thank you. The other two wait people who brought check, to go boxes made no eye contact with us, just dropped the things [boxes, check] at the table. NOTHING. Also my daughter ordered steamed rice. The waitperson [older female] who brought her fried rice and said, "oh, I'll just give you this for free" and left a small bowl on the table. When we asked the waitperson for the white rice, she yanked her "courtesy" fried rice (untouched by us] off the table and brings the white rice. All the errors were caused by her so not sure why she was so unpleasant. My [remake] food was out so quickly after the order which, at a dine in restaurant, is NOT a good thing. The food was poor, poor quality. I noticed that several of my green beans were black (like spoiled) and the beef was tough. Yuck, yuck, yuck. There is nothing good or pleasing about this place. It's old and dingy, dirty. Save you and your family the anguish and headache... try another restaurant in the area, Chinatown. STAY FAR AWAY - mean unfriendly people and nasty food!

I do use this site, especially for restaurant reviews, but some of them seem overly critical, and some of them seem to be from the owners or shills.

Yelp is a fraudulent website - I was searching for an apartment - I found it necessary to find reviews about the owners and how they ran their properties. Well, the owners I looked up didn't have any negative reviews and that my friend should be a caution sign, don't ignore it. I didn't know any better - I got snared - the owners were racist, in the pocket of the police, crooked judge, so I was injured, my name was character assassinated, I lost everything, and my credit of 768 was ruined - how? In order for the owners to avoid discrimination charges, they had their long term tenants terrorize me to drive me out by stalking me w/cameras, chasing me w/dogs, blocking my entry way, harassing me, breaking the privacy act - when they couldn't get me to respond violently they made a sinister falls allegation and inserted it into a Ten day notice - I had never been evicted and I always got my deposit - so, here's the kicker... the day of the hearing in Spokane Wa, early morning w/out being notified in a timely manner my case was removed first in 15 minutes of my hearing from a judge I knew was honest to a judge of the owner's friend, but at that time I had no idea what was happening to me so of course that created my downfall; it was hell and I hold Yelp responsible as well b/c after the fact I did write the reviews of the Liberty Lake law enforcement, property owners - Whitewater Creek, Inc., of Hayden, which they have several WA state subsidiaries that manage some 1,000 apartment units in the Spokane WA, Liberty Lake, and Idaho area - but yelp.com removed them all for the next person to get snared. Long story short...

YELP is a known extortion scheme whereby businesses who decline to advertise wind up with their positive reviews filtered and their negative reviews made prominent. A cadre of so called elite Yelpers (chronically unemployed losers) are Yelps hired guns who do the dirty work of defaming small businesses for them and shilling for advertisers. Thousands upon thousands of Yelp reviews are actually reviews of big chains like Starbuck and Chipotle rather than being genuine reviews of small businesses who lack advertising and p. R. budgets. If you look at the numbers for this IPO they simply do not add up. After all, how can YELP expect small businesses to advertise with a bulletin board which has already defamed them or threatens to do so? Keep in mind that this MONEY LOSING BUSINESS relies on advertising for over 60% of its revenue! To make matters even worse there are numerous class action lawsuits which have already been filed, one of which has been dismissed but there are many, many others in the works. The nail in the YELP coffin? GOOGLE is a powerful competitor which recently acquired Zagat. The removal of links to Google searches will considerably reduce Yelp traffic. No wonder Jeremy Stoppelman and other top brass absconded with 36M in Series E funding by dumping shares in advance of this sham IPO.

In the past years I would always receive calls from yelp rep offering me to upgrade and improve my business on yelp but many times I would tell them that I would call back when I'm interested and ready. So back in July I get a call again from Yelp this time offering me a promotion about "yelp leads" and that it's free! For the first months and that I would start paying from August and onwards and rep told me that I could withdraw from the program at anytime. So joined the program but I would discover in july that I had an outstanding balance on my account so when I called to inquire about this it turns out that I'm getting charged for July but paying it in August that's "what free for the first moths means to yelp". So when I told yelp that I was told it was free and that the rep offered me this as a promo they still told I have to pay then I told them to transfer me to the same rep who offered me the promo so I can clarify with him and they still refused to transfer me because it's a call center. So at the end I still had to pay for something that I was told it was going to be free. A lesson to learn from any corporation is when they want to grab you to join them they will appear very easy going but after you join them and they get money they would start to get tough on you. As a matter of fact when I spoke to the rep back in July who offered me the promo I asked him to at least email me so information pertaining to the promo so I can have it on paper he told me that there isn't and that I can refer to the website. Yelp is a scam and a horrible company to deal with. I recommend everyone not to deal with them.

YELLING ABOUT YELP
March 1, 2020

I found that it is VERY difficult to write a business review on YELP because it is not an online consumer review site that is conducive to consumer complaints. First of all, there is apparently a maximum word length for each message, which the site DOESN'T infomr you of but merely STOPS your texting WITHOUT warning so that you have to continue it in SEPERATE sections! THEN, you CANNOT post the other sections about the SAME business the SAME day so you have to wait until the NEXT day to do each one IF you have a VERY long message with alot of detail as these online consumer review website CLAIM they like you to have! AS IF this is not BAD enough, you CANNOT post the sections as "continuations" BUT as "updates" of your previous review so that the sections are NOT posted in sequential order but with the LATEST FIRST and the EARLIER ones LAST. So readers have to scroll down to the beginning AFTER reading the LAST part FIRST and finding out it is the END of the message and NOT the beginning! And on top of it all, there is NO contact venue for addressing these problems to YELP in its website.

Yelp is one of the worst website I ever came across people there people kept calling me to be on their website, They told me I will have more customers because the way I do hair, people will come, I give them a try when I talk to someone, they told me, they wasn't going to charge me at this moment, si thinking maybe when I do have a Customer that when they will start charging me. That the charge me $90 in my count I called them and I told them am no longer in interesting because I didn't get no customers nobody call my phone Or text my phone. After I canceled they send me an email of my balance of $158 I say to myself why am I paying balance of $158 when I never had a customer from these people and I didn't even sign up for a month so here we are, they took out all the money in my credit card account my credit score dropped to 62 points I am so mad at myself don't even know what to do with the people they need to take the website down because they are here scaning people for their money there is no good

Small Business Owner here and I'm here to tell you Yelp is the worst! ONLINE EXTORTION! Had a couple good reviews on yelp months back but the yelp listings was on the 9th or 10th page on google organically. Got a negative review and then all my good reviews... about 29 got somehow "filtered" so that my potenial customers only see the negative review... this negative review is now on the FIRST page of google in searching our particular catagory online... once that review went live the sales folks at yelp kept calling and implied if I paid that somehow my good reviews may re-apper. They tell me that a customer has the right to say negative things which is true but my clients that have posted good reviews have a right to have them seen as well! Yelp tells me that they have no control over the "filter" seems odd that none of my good reviews can be seen and the only bad one can... NOT FAIR!
YELP IS A COMPLETE RIP OFF... no other review site filters... you get the good with the bad... google local... angies list, service majic, home pro they all post both the good and the bad... IF you are a small business owner... never register with yelp

Ohhhhh, the irony!
April 4, 2018

Well. My first encounter with Yelp was through a company. Yelp wanted our business. We thought $350/MONTH for their services (it was never very clear what those services were until we turned down their aggressive offer and sales tactics) was pretty steep, so we respectfully declined... over and over and over again.

BEFORE YELP EXTORTION ATTEMPTS: we were seeing a good balance of reviews on our site, and really didn't see a need for the "service."

DURING YELP EXTORTION ATTEMPTS: I was harassed by salespeople on a daily basis, pressuring me to buy in. One person tried to educate me about my audience, and I had to correct some seriously skewed "data" he was spewing. That didn't go over well.

AFTER YELP EXTORTION ATTEMPTS: Amazingly, after I literally had to block calls from the salespeople, ALL of our good reviews were hidden and ALL of our bad ones brought to the front. Yelp blames it on "the bot! The bot did it! There's NO bias! We swear!" Yep. I'm pretty sure those noses don't fit in compact cars any more.

We started taking screenshots of hidden customer reviews and post them into our newsletters to thank customers for taking the time to write those reviews. We posted the good and the bad, because they're all valuable. Even more valuable when you can actually see them.

IN ADDITION, all of my own personal reviews on my own account (they knew my name, after all) disappeared from sight. Permanently. I had some really good reviews of some small businesses and they just magically disappeared after being there, many of them, for years. New reviews, old reviews, all gone. Poof.

So, in short, if I want to find out a restaurant's reputation or a company's cred, I look for google reviews. I don't trust Yelp to do anything but make me Yelp in pain.
