Good Luck
January 6, 2024

No chance of getting last year's AGI with these clowns. Once requested they will send you to a dozen different products for 2023 and will not take you to your original request...ever. Thank goodness for H&R Block seamless system. Taxact sucks

Rip-off
April 14, 2023

I used this online and it never showed me the full charge until I halter I had filed the return. It is not free federal filing if you need schedule 2. If you had health insurance through marketplace.gov schedule 2 information is required. So it would be $46.95. That plus $54.95 for state taxes cam to just obver $116. Then AFTER I HAD FILED it said I would be charged and additional amount for handling a bank transfer fees.I had chosen to pay by having it deducted from my return., and it took $172 rom my state return so got less than $10 back. You would be better off buying the software from HR Block or Other company so you know how UCB it will cost you without hidden charges that you can't get out of. Plus there is no online support.

First of all their staff does not know or understand the tax act. Had capital loss and support did not know how to fill in the form.
Second of all, tried to prepare my return beginning of February. The tax forms I needed were not available. Supports answer was they did not know when they would be available. I have to file a foreign return. Cannot do so without my US return. I waited until the middle of March. Forms still not available. At this point went to another provider. Surprise all the forms I needed were available.

Many better providers with better support

Will never use again
March 31, 2023

Will never use again, after doing my return, which wasn't difficult, made me pay to be able to print it out, I was aware it would cost 46.95 was ok with that. But then to print state forms to mail, charged me another 55.00$! Big ripoff

Not worth it
April 25, 2023

I filed my taxes with TaxAct, paid $133 thinking I would get assistance if anything went wrong. The IRS rejected my taxes, Federal and State. I think because I got less in my retirement than I got last year or they needed some pin from 2019. I was thinking everything was going smoothly since the site had that I had filed the returns. I went to check the status when no funds were taken expect the $133 I paid them. I had to hunt through the site to find the returns had been rejected... no email, text, not obviously show on the TaxAct site. I tried to contact them and was told the experts were not available at 3:00pm. I requested a refund and without hesitation they said they would give me a refund. They need to take the site down if they can't do any better. Now I am really late and have to take my taxes somewhere else and probably will have to pay, not to mention the problems I now face with the IRS. Don't trust them with your taxes.

I've used TaxAct for several years and it's usually quite good. However, don't believe the emails you receive as a regular customer concerning a 25% discount if you commit to using their product in the upcoming year. They do not honor it! I was told it would be automatically applied to my account so when I filed it would be there. Hahaha, it wasn't and when I chatted with a rep I was informed that since my return was already submitted it was too late. I'll seriously look in to other tax products next year.

I have been with them for years. I do an estimated tax return with the information I have starting in Dec of each year to determine if I need to pay the estimated tax by 1/15 of the next year. As real information comes in I make changes. I had already posted 20 real documents and I then received a notice to my email address they have that I can get a 50% discount. Great. I clicked on the button to log in with my credentials and it created another return. I called and they told me I would have to either input the information again on the new return that shows they will give 50% off or they will give me only 20% on the one I inputted all the information on. That is bull.

Unethical
March 9, 2024

My original return was rejected by the IRS. Had to fill in 3 boxes to get it right, yet they charged me 80 dollars to refile it. It cost me an additional 20 dollars to file the same state return. There was nothing prior to me clicking submit return that would have indicated this.

I found tax act to be extremely difficult to use. Several times it logged me out or I logged out and then it asked me to do a new return each time. It took three hours to complete which normally takes me about 1-1/2 hours to complete with all the logouts and asking me to renter information. When I finally finished all my information I initially chose pay for fee with refund which tax act wanted to charge me 54.99 on top of the 40.00. I ended up not paying for it with my refund and paid from my credit card. Buyer beware do not choose "Pay from my Refund". So glad I am finished.

Less known but solid income tax program
February 12, 2022

I moved to TaxAct based on its positive reviews after having a bad experience with TurboTax's handling of a rental property sale. See my review on this site.

TaxAct provided a similar data entry experience as Turbo Tax, although the detail differences took a few minutes to adapt to.

TA capably handled W2 and 1099 inputs, and was thorough with rental property expense categories. I had no trouble with the real estate sale data entry.

They have very few financial firms on their download list, so lots of data entry for me.

TA appears to be more rigorous than TurboTax in their use of every line in the applicable tax forms. This is good for finding every tax deduction opportunity. It does mean more reading lines in forms that turn out to be unnecessary.

Overall a good experience. I intend to use TaxAct next year.

What is "2020 Tax Return Online All Inclusive" for $134.95? I started with deluxe! Now being charged for something I cannot even find on Google! It is nowhere located in their product offerings... A Google search returns nothing... I was expecting to pay the deluxe charge and when I was done, actually I could get by with the free since I don't need many forms. All Inclusive? WTH?

We have two small partnerships associated with our business. Unfortunately one download of TaxAct is good for only one partnership return. There is no way to create multiple returns, except to buy another copy, which I did but... the program does not allow two versions on one computer. A return that would have taken me two hours to complete by hand has sucked up my entire day and now I have to find another computer to start over. Also, customer service wait time has run from 4 hours yesterday (with never a call back) and over one hour wait today for call one which said I would be fine to download another copy and another over one hour for call two which said I'd need to use a second computer. I'm looking for something else next year.

Price Gouging
February 20, 2018

I have been using Taxact for years without any problem. Until this year, I was a strong advocate. Despite inflation plus plus price increases year on year, I found them good value. That goodwill disappeared this 2017 tax year with the restructuring of their packages and the need to pay $15 extra for my wife's schedule C. The overall cost almost trebled although they did concede a discount when I called ( 25 minute wait) resulting in only slightly more than doubling.

For folks with basic no-frills needs there are now better very cheap choices including the IRS's own E-File - etax.com - and freetaxusa.com.

I will see what happens next year but based on past experience and the voluminous lousy feedback online, my loyalty is shot!

Do better if you can!

DO NOT USE TAX ACT!
April 20, 2022

It's rejected 5 times asking for security proof which I provided correctly, each time, even had my Daughter try and still rejected. They didn't mind charging me $43 though. Should not charge till it's accepted.

2012 Software made calculation errors (adding when should have subtracted, failed to copy numbers from one form to another). After they finally fixed it, I e-filed my return -- and then received a "late filing" penalty from the state because they didn't receive one of the forms even though I had a confirmation from TaxAct that they were sent. TaxAct said, "our accuracy guarantee covers only bad calculations, not e-file problems" and then stopped returning my phone calls. Use other software or even paper and a calculator -- this company is a joke!

I was trying to print review copies and then final copies of e-filed s corp returns. I kept getting a script error so I called for help. I was told to change a setting in my internet options and told that would take care of it. He then hung up. I finished doing what he said which wiped out my desktop. Folders with hundreds of pictures, worksheets, letters are now gone. I have checked the hard drive to see if they were moved or something but they are gone and I am MAD! Do not use this software!

TaxAct switched the type of tax preparation plan I was using through them because I sold my home. There was absolutely no difference nor any screens asking me about my home sale yet they charged me for the more expensive product. I called customer service three times and reps were unable to help. One rep kept yawning and talked a mile a minute. Warning, TaxAct will try to sell other products to you at the end and you need to be careful what you click on because they will switch the phrasing as you click through saying "no thanks." Stay away from TaxAct.
