Eazy but expensive...
February 18, 2023

It isn't bead to pay the $39.99 fee to file state taxes but the bank they use rips you off completely by charging you $54.99. It is bad enough the economy is in the toilet with the clown in office and eggs being $7 a dozen, and here comes the bank TaxACT uses to dig into your pockets even more. I suggest filing through tthe IRS.gov website, less fees, just as easy and not extra charges for a bank to cut a check.

I have been using taxact for years. What once cost me $17 when I 1st started with them, this year cost me $74 to file. Nothing has changed in what I claim in filing. No new forms. A lot of the cost came up at the end and I had to choose whether to file or start over with another program. I decided to just file. I wish that I went elsewhere rather than feed the greed of this company. I am disappointed in this company that I once really liked. This will be it for me. I plan to go elsewhere next year. My father-in law filed his taxes online this year for $18. I recommend that anyone looking to file with taxact to search out other options 1st. If you do use taxact, be prepared for additional charges at the very end. Greed and deception. Short term thinking and short term business practices. Someone at the top is apparently looking to line their pockets quickly. I'm sorry that I contributed. I will know better next year.

A total rip off
April 14, 2022

IRS advertised as free file on their website. Federal was free but state was not! Their website is frustrating and difficult to navigate but I settled with them instead of TurboTax because i thought they were not going to charge. If you're going to pay ridiculous prices to do your own taxes and get ripped off anyway pick a different site!

Was supposed to get a$20 or $25 gift card for "referring" a friend to file with TaxAct. So, this was back in January with two people and nothing has ever showed up, nor has there ever been any contact from them. Also, when you are the "beneficiary" of receiving 20% off, when you follow the link provided it just so happens the price is about 20% higher so there is no net benefit. Also, the price is way jacked up from what it used to be and they "trick" you into purchasing a higher level of service than what you really need. You might only need the basic service, and all the sudden they throw the DELUXE price when you try to click the link. I have used them for years, but now I am done.

I've always done my own taxes and have used Tax Act since it first appeared. It's been fine if you know what you're doing and don't have a complex return. Last year's version had a big price jump, which is understandable since it was still a bargain compared to Turbo Tax.

The 2017 version has already annoyed me, however. First, I discovered that I needed the "Freelancer" version since I have to complete a Schedule C. (They did give me the upgrade for free since I'm a long-time customer.) Next, I found a bug in my state's software. Then, I found the only support is via phone -- with a 40-minute wait time. There's no email support or any other way to report the bug. For this reason I wonder if I'll be using Tax Act next year.

Update 1/29/18: I found an email address for the marketing department right here on Sitejabber and sent an email asking to forward my issue to the tech department. It was indeed forwarded and I received a reply a few days later. Turned out there *is* a way to handle my issue, but it's in the *state* section, which I had to enter via a tab which I've never needed before. So, not a bug. Perhaps if I'd gone through the state interview the software would have addressed the issue. I still feel this should appear in the program's "help" file, but I'm upping my score from 3 stars to 4.

Great tax help
February 15, 2023

I have been using Tax Act since 2015, with no problems whatsoever. I previously used another tax online program that ripped me off, but TAX ACT is legit. This morning I spoke with Jasmine and Julie re concerns I had, and Jasmine had the patience of a Saint, and Julie (tax expert that Jasmine asked if I didn't mind talking to) was outstanding. Don't fall for those other online tax frauds.I highly recommend TAX ACT.

I've used TaxAct for several years and it's usually quite good. However, don't believe the emails you receive as a regular customer concerning a 25% discount if you commit to using their product in the upcoming year. They do not honor it! I was told it would be automatically applied to my account so when I filed it would be there. Hahaha, it wasn't and when I chatted with a rep I was informed that since my return was already submitted it was too late. I'll seriously look in to other tax products next year.

TaxAct used to provide good value. But they've destroyed that reputation with their stealth price increases this year. First, you don't learn into well into the Federal return that there is now a $10 up-charge if you need to use Schedule C (including C-EZ). And then to add insult to injury, adding a state return is now a whopping additional $37. So, our Federal + State nearly doubled -- from $35.50 last year to $64.30 *for the exact same forms*!

TaxACT did not submit the return
June 10, 2022

I did my mother's taxes and paid $106.64 to do it on 3/13/22. My mother mentioned to me today, 6/10/22, that she never received her refund so I logged in to see what was wrong. You could see in the account where I was charged for the submission but numerous sections in her account were blank, as though because of an error. Her account said we'd never printed the return (she has a copy that I printed through the site) and that the return was never submitted, even though I was billed, submitted, and printed the return after submission. I've used the site for years without issue, but this will be the last time as the fees have gotten absolutely outrageous and now my mother's taxes are late.

The service stated it would charge 44.95, when I received my taxes they charged almost double the price 77.15 with no explanation, I am trying to contact their customer service to correct this, but by reading these reviews I am not going to hold my breath. My suggestion, do your home work on available deductions and do your taxes on the IRS website, its free. I am starting to see these online tax companies are praying on people that need help with their taxes to gain a profit, knowing the IRS offers free services.

Using the exact same schedules and no difference in income, the price to electronically file my 2019 taxes was twice as much as filing 2018 taxes. TAXACT doesn't tell you the real cost of using their product until time to submit the info. I signed up for a discounted price but they really increased their price significantly then gave a fake discount. Amazing how a discounted price resulted in paying twice as much. Never again! Great way to lose a long-time customer.

This site acts like its free to do your taxes with them. Baloney. They charge you $18 to print your state return. That's not even it. If you decide to e-file you are charged at least $60 bucks total to e-file both your state and federal. Too much baloney. I think I am going to try a new place next year to file. Free my $#*!!

This is a putrid company
December 8, 2020

Their customer service is awful. I'm trying to get a copy of my return, for some reason their internet validation doesn't work and has locked me out for a week apparently. It's the end of the year, I need my return for benefit purposes and now my tax preparer won't let me access my account (which I've had with them for nearly 20 years). Suffice to say, I'll never use TaxAct again as I'm switching tax preparers starting now. I will also be filing a compliant form ******* with IRS as not only are they unwilling to get me into my account, but they are also refusing to provide a copy of my return. I can only imagine what would happen if I get audited, I'll tell the IRS, nope, can't access my information. Thanks TaxAct for nothing.

This site tries to hook you by making you do a lot of work, and then offering to do it properly for money. Only after giving your information for an hour do they inform you that your filing will in fact not be free. So you can pay up or will have wasted your time. It's a scam.

They will switch the price at the very end after you have spent hours inputting info. They will steal your money and authorize payment for additional services you did not agree to once they have your credit card or account info. Avoid this site - please do not let them steal from you, too! There are way too many legitimate, ethical competitors out there.

Every year I use TaxAct to file my free federal taxes. This year I filed having bought a house. The price was really good, the site easily navigable, and I was pleased with the service. Another online tax service charges double and had a glitch in their system for 2014 that cost customers money in their returns. My neighbors used the other well known service and had to call their call center. Three different call center agents gave them three different answers. TaxAct is be far, the best service in self prepared taxes I have yet to encounter.
