The overall reputation of the company reflects significant dissatisfaction among customers, particularly regarding its customer service and reliability. Many users report frustrating experiences with delayed refunds, poor communication, and unhelpful support staff. Complaints about properties not matching descriptions or being in unacceptable conditions are prevalent, leading to a loss of trust. While a few customers express occasional satisfaction with specific transactions, the overwhelming sentiment leans towards a lack of accountability and professionalism. This has resulted in a growing number of users opting for alternative platforms, indicating a critical need for improvement in service quality and responsiveness.

Booked a property through VRBO recently, and ended up being directed a property manager "Veeve". Several weeks after booking, Veeve canceled our booking for the original property. Despite my instructions to cancel and refund our original booking, Veeve then created a new booking at a different property, and sent a new booking confirmation email almost a week after I requested a refund. All of this is clearly against Veeve's own website policies.
When contact VRBO for help, they explained that they could not force Veeve to refund and could not provide any leverage or influence to solve the issue. Further, they explained that the VRBO traveler protection policies would only apply if I first traveled to the original property, and while physically present confirmed with them that I could not enter the property.
Any claim of safe booking or traveler protection that VRBO claims to provide is not going to apply outside of very narrow situations, and so you are basically on your own if you book through VRBO. My suggestion - skip VRBO and go directly to the property manager, but don't use Veeve.
I can't get a 100% refund due to foreigner who owns the property! The representatives that I have spoken to on the phone or live chat have been apologetic but not getting anywhere with the home owner! Airbnb has told their home owners to refund money back to owners and why is this not the same for VRBO? Very disappointed since I have used them many times in the past and have had to cancel before and never having a conflict. I hope VRBO can iron this out or this will greatly affect their company in the future
Cannot get a refund from the owner - owner is a rude person who seems to be German and has used their denial of refund because of Trump! They are making this situation political? Not getting any support at all to this point. Would not recommend this property or this service!
I booked a stay in Hawaii paying $3136. 36. Guay has been quarantined and the homeowner will not refund or re-book my stay. Vrbo is no help! Will not refund any of my money or help me get a vacation rental at a later date.
We had an expensive two-night reservation in Pahoa, Hawaii. Due to a governor's order to limit spread of COVID-19, it became impossible for any visitors to go through with their travel plans in Hawaii. On all other reservations the we had, we were treated very fairly. BedandBreakfast.com, however, shut down their main phone line (we called multiple times over several days, and they always said "technical difficulties"). It was impossible to even discuss rescheduling or getting a partial or complete refund. Their whole focus seems to have been to keep the money, even though their innkeeper could not have accommodated us even if we could have shown up--the whole island was shut down. We'll never reserve through them again.
Was scheduled for a stay in Aspen Mar 16 for the week to attend an anesthesia conference. As we know the Mountains and town were locked down for quarantine. Nationally on CNN VRBO officially stated 100% refund for customers. Guess what? No refund or correspondence. Thankfully, I was considering using them for a vacation rental for our vacation home. I will now gladly pay the local realtor the high service fee.
VRBO customer service doesn't even deserve 1 star! I booked a trip for my family and I but the Coronavirus caused us to have to cancel our trip. Carolina Cabin Rental was amazing and gave us the refund for the cabin but I was told that VRBO would have to refund me my $125.00 fee. I called 3 times waited on hold for 30 minutes only to have the 3 different people that answered the 3 times I called to start to listen to me than hang up. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY THEY WILL STEAL YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY. Cari Brackett
I have rented with VRBO in the past and have never had any issues. This time has turned me off of the company moving forward.
I rented a property over a month ago and had no issues. The property owner has messaged me letting me know my full damage deposit will be refunded in 5-7 business days.It has been almost 20 business days since I received this message. Every time I call VRBO I get a note left on my case or get told that is has been escalated. This was over a week ago! Now, I get hung up on when I call and ask to speak to someone who can help me.
First time using VRBO. Will not use them again. They have very poor systems in place and very poor customer service. When you have issues, they are offshore customer service. Do not use them. Great idea but atrocious execution.
**Warning DO NOT BOOK WITH VRBO** I am writing this post to expose the pure SCAM that is VRBO during a nationwide pandemic (Coronavirus). My family and I booked a vacation rental in Siesta Key, Florida for our spring break vacation in April. We paid a large amount of money, being $3,500, as she has 5 children & we needed a large rental. The rental is also on the beach. The beaches have since been shut down as the state of Florida continues to be one of the epicenters for the Coronavirus outbreak. The owner is refusing to refund our money and IS NOT being accommodating to change our dates when VRBO "suggested" to give renters a year to change. We contacted VRBO who was NO HELP and stated it is between us and the owner! I am sure they are doing this to other poor families who paid good money to go on vacation, some of which may REALLY need it during this time of unemployment and uncertainty. This is such a scam during a nationwide epidemic when we cannot be going on vacation during this time particularly to a place (Florida) which is as I said is one of the a primary locations of the virus.
While other sites have enacted policies wrt the Covid-19 situation VRBO seem to have thrown their hands in the air and the renters under the bus by effectively saying too bad for you. We have a booking in Niagara on the lake that cannot be used due to guidelines set up to restrict Covid-19 and the VRBO response is that we are effectively out of pocket for the expense unless the property owner wants to issue a refund.
We had to, unfortunately, cancel our girl's weekend to Scottsdale due to COVID-19. The owners said they would give us a full refund but did not refund the total amount. They kept $400. They have not gotten back to me regarding the discrepancy in the refund, and when I called VRBO, they were absolutely useless. They said that it was at the owner's discretion, and while they "urged" their clients to provide full refunds, according to their policy, they only needed to refund 50%! My family and I also had a booking with Airbnb in Florida, who fully refunded the total. No questions asked. VRBO is incredibly unprofessional and lacking integrity. I understand their frustration on their part and the insane amount of money they are losing. But what about the thousands of people who rent from them that could use that money back due to unforeseen circumstances. Don't book with VRBO!
We can tell a lot about others for how they behave in a crisis, and VRBO has failed the crisis test. Their "policy" (if you can call it that) states that clients who must cancel for coronavirus should get at least partial refunds, but it's ultimately up to the property owner to decide how they want to handle a refund. VRBO's stance - to cover for their property owners rather than care for clients in a pandemic - is a business model that doesn't work. I booked with VRBO, had to cancel due to travel restrictions, and now I will, apparently, receive no refund.
Through these first weeks of Covid-19 there are many companies that have gone above and beyond to try to make sure clients do not suffer for something that is out of all of our control. I'll go to those companies in future, and leave VRBO behind. While I appreciate that some reviews on this site say that individual owners have come through, that seems like just good luck, not a corporate policy that people can trust. And, just FYI, VRBO is doing nothing to resolve this. (All of this in reference to VRBO property ID ******* in Maui).
Cannot get a refund for the April California vacation we had booked and now cannot go on due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Take some responsibility for your business VRBO, and dont just leave policy for your business and brand down to the owners. Owners are greedy, wouldnt give a full refund as they "need to protect their rental income". These are the kind of short term decisions in crisis that destroy businesses in the long term, and I hope thats true here. Greedy company with greedy "hosts".
Can't believe vrbo is allowing they're home owners to not reimburse they're Canadian renters they're money when they can't get to florida with flights canceled and borders closed during the covid 19 crises. It just shows how inconsiderate this company is during this time when people's worlds are turned upside down. We will never use vrbo anymore and will do everything we can to tell everyone else what type of a bloodsucking company this is to do this to people during such a terrible time. Florida depends on people from countries like Canada to keep they're economy going and there are companies like vrbo that's going to discourage people from wanting to travel there anymore, we paid $2200 for a house to rent mid April and they're not willing to give us our money back, knowing that it is beyond our control to get there. Shame on vrbo and they're associates. Everyone be aware and never book through this company anymore and also be aware that they are associated with expedia.
My wife and I were told by our employers that we could not leave our state to travel. We attempted to get our money back through vrbo, the csa travel insurance, and the property owner. Vrbo said they would refund us $83... drop in the bucket. The property owner refused any kind of refund and CSA said it wasn't a covered item. The world will not forget that in such a time of urgency and disaster, you all had zero compassion. This will destroy vrbo and frankly, I hope it does. People do not forget. Horrible people. Greedy, horrible people.
I completely understand the business model for utilizing services like Vrbo and AirBnB where there is a renter and a rentee. During a confirmed national state of emergency, I cancelled my reservation >30 days before my planned stay. The renter refunded my money@ 100% and Vrbo kept the administration fees. Out of principle, this is a completely unethical business practice and people need to stay away.
Vrbo is keeping the property owners money for bookings. When you call your never given to anyone who knows.
We booked a place in Key West on Duval Street. We arrived at the location and did not have the access code. We called and called and texted the contact. Nothing.
We called VRBO customer service. She wasn't able to contact anytime either. They booked us at a wonderful place instead. Didn't sayjust wait. Nothing.
Contact calls us two hours later.
After we get home: VRBO says it's not their problem. Hours on the phone. Ridiculous. Never ever again. The contact could have called us the next day. It still would not have been their problem. Why did you book us at another place? Just don't.
I've had other easy lovely experiences with this company. This was unreal. We are done.
I was scheduled to rent house from Lonny and Kathryn Doub during Covid19 outbreak (March 23-27,2020). The owner is refusing to refund any of my money that I paid to rent their house. The owner also knew that I had just recovered from a long illness that ravaged my immune system. Was going to splurge on a vacation for myself and three kids. Given the circumstances with the virus, I cannot chance my or my kids safety. Owner doesn't care. Know that if you book a vacation through Vrbo with Lonny Doub you will not be refunded your money for any reason, even if one of your immediate family dies.
Answer: There are many problems with listing with VRBO/HomeAway. The 1st is that it is the largest company of it's size. While that may mean that you get more exposure, you also have more competition for getting your listing seen. For example, your listing could be # 300 out of 2,000. Most people don't want to search that far to find what they want because they can usually find something else sooner. In order to get a higher listing, you must pay more. I pay the highest rates they have for my properties in TN # 191351, 189535, & 289723, i. E. over $1,500 each. Listing position is also based on a number of criteria which they mandate. We have no control over some of those criteria. For example, listing position is based on whether or not guests USE VRBO/HomeAway on line booking. Initially,. VRBO/HomeAway required that we OFFER on line booking in order to maximize our listing position, so I offered it. VRBO/HomeAway then changed their criteria & now guests must USE on line booking in order or my listing position drops. I have no control over whether or not they USE VRBO/HomeAway & I don't recommend it for several reasons (more on that if you're interested). Listing positions are also determined by the number & quality of reviews. Again, I have no control over whether or not someone writes a review nor how they rate a property. What may be a 5 Star for someone may only be a 3 Star for someone else, but I'm at their mercy to provide a review & to rate it well. There are many other factors that go into listing position. As I said, I try to maximize what I can & If I'm luck, my property will be listed around 50/200. I get much better response from FlipKey by TripAdvisor. As I mentioned, I pay VRBO/HomeAway over $1,500 for each property. I Pay FlipKey by TripAdvisor about $450/property for #'s 6588094, 2386143, & 3746421 & get much better results. The problem with FlipKey is that it's hard for someone to search for a specific property using the property #.
Answer: VRBO will not help anymore with anything. Homeaway bought them and there is no personal contact with owners anymore until they pay through the site. I don't know about negative reviews. Never see any. If there was a way to avoid VRBO and Someway I would do it; but they have the corner on the VACA rental market now.
Answer: I have the same problem. I don't think they have any.
Answer: Vrbo will NOT get involved in any way. They will not arbitrate on anyone's behalf. They are strictly an advertising website. Carefree travel insurance & all the other stuff is just to make renters feel more comfortable to rent. They hardly ever pay out if there is a real problem. You can sue in small claims court, in the city & state you rented in. The only defense you have is if you paid with a credit card to do a charge back, & even then its hard. You have to have documentation to prove you case. However, vrbo won't contest the chargeback if you can get your credit cad company to work with you. Best to leave a review that warns other renters to stay away. But vrbo approves the reviews before they are posted.
Answer: I have spoken with them so many times yesterday and today with no fix my problem. The number is 1-877-228-3145. I wish you better luck than I have had.
Answer: Absolutely nothing! Every change they make results in their making more money and owners making less. My bookings are down drastically. I would not sign up with VRBO.
Answer: Go with the standard listing if you have already paid. If not save your money and try homeescape.com. Homeaway/VRBO rolled out a new 9% service fee charged to your customers in addition to what you're already paying for. They did this without any warning to their customers. I found out after one of my repeat guests questioned the charge. I'm moving away from them and going with other options.
Answer: A: NEVER, EVER DEAL WITH ANY OWNERS OR PROPERTY MANAGERS THAT YOU HAVENT SPOKEN TO DIRECTLY. NEVER use any form of payment other than credit card. All CC's would refund you the money if you don't get the services. If they don't accept cards or allow payment through Homeaway, FIND ANOTHER PROPERTY OWNER WHO WILL or be prepared to take the chance. READ all reviews, if they don't have any you ARE taking a chance it's a scam or a dump (or a new property but be careful. NEVER make a large deposit EVER! VRBO has turned out to be reliable for us, never used Flipkey and AirBnB wouldn't use it - I want a large property not a room room share
Answer: Try airbnb to rent part of your home
Answer: Same issue for us. The house we rented had glowing reviews and when I tried to post an honest review it still has not been posted.
VRBO provides vacation rental listings by owner in the US and around the world.
