The overall reputation of the company reflects significant dissatisfaction among customers, particularly regarding its customer service and reliability. Many users report frustrating experiences with delayed refunds, poor communication, and unhelpful support staff. Complaints about properties not matching descriptions or being in unacceptable conditions are prevalent, leading to a loss of trust. While a few customers express occasional satisfaction with specific transactions, the overwhelming sentiment leans towards a lack of accountability and professionalism. This has resulted in a growing number of users opting for alternative platforms, indicating a critical need for improvement in service quality and responsiveness.

Wishing 3 hours of making a reservation it was cancelled by the owner of the home for rent. VRBO says the money will take up to 7 weeks to be returned. The vacation was planned for one month from now and will not be returned until after the vacation would be over. They can't do anything and even talking back and fourth with the owner of the property who by the way was not at all helpful in any way. It seems we are out a vacation this year and the money for god knows how long. VRBO didn't care and never tried to help. We should have read the reviews before ever even thinking of using them! Maybe they will go bankrupt for having a bad reputation.
VRBO is holding refunds resulting from cancellations concerning the COVID19 pandemic. Despite claiming that they do not have enough staff to process refunds any faster, the corporation continues to have adequate staff to accept any and all new reservations and process payments immediately. They are extremely difficult to contact and dismissive of customer inquiries and complaints, in my personal experience. In my opinion, this is a business to avoid at all cost. Book through an alternative company or directly with the property owner.
We booked our condo during the corona virus and took a chance that Destin Beach would reopen. They did reopen and 4 days before we are to arrive, we get message that our condo reservation was canceled. We did get our money back but had to find another place. This time we used air bnb. It did cost us five hundred more and not the location that we were looking for. Beware of VRBO,
I could not one more upset about the delay in receiving my refund from VRBO. I waited the expected 3-4 weeks (after my cancellation was processed). Then I started calling VRBO. I used the online chat twice - it took hours to get a response and the other time my call was dropped several times and I had to keep calling back. No results. No refund. I started calling VRBO and the response was not much better. Each time I would explain my story, give them the reservation number and explain how I had still not got my refund. Each person told me to just wait longer. At about week 6 I started asking for a supervisor as I had zero results to this point. Still no help. I now had an arbitration number and was promised a call or email the following Monday which would surely lead to my refund. No call or email Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. I called the next Monday. No supervisors available and I explained my story all over again. Still no refund. Some companies are going out of their way to help customers and those that have lost their jobs during Covid 19. VRBO is a SCAM and they are causing undue stress and financial strain. DO NOT BOOK WITH VRBO.
AVOID VRBO & their CSA Travel Insurance! What a scam! We booked our vacation and purchased the travel insurance that VRBO recommended to us (CSA Insurance). Our trip was cancelled on us a week before we were going due to the city's closure of short-term rentals in the area. We were disappointed, but at least comforted thinking surely the travel insurance that we bought on VRBO's advice would reimburse us since the trip was cancelled due to no fault or choice of ours. We were way wrong! After CSA Insurance sitting on our claim for almost 2 months, they informed us our trip was cancelled for a non-covered reason, COVID-19 Pandemic! You have got to be kidding! I will NEVER use VRBO again. EVER. Also, thanks to VRBO's lack of guidance to protect its users/end-customers, they don't require hosts to do anything other than follow their normal cancellation rules which results in definitely not getting your $ back for a last minute cancellation. Shame on VRBO for not protecting your customers in the COVID crisis, and recommending and selling worthless travel insurance. I hope the class-action lawsuit that's coming to you sets you straight.
I rented a condo in Florida from VRBO. They made the condo available knowing that they couldn't rent it during COVID. They accepted my reservation, took my money and failed to contact me in any way. When I contacted them to find out how to get into the condo they told me they couldn't rent it. It's been weeks and I still haven't received a refund. Public endangerment. These people are just dogs. Save yourself the headache of dealing with their rude people. Use AirBNB instead.
If you book through VRBO, you do so at your own risk. They are more than incompetent. Many negatives
I booked a house for memorial weekend I was charged, the owner called me saying the house was booked by someone else 20 minutes before I did. He said he had another house available and tried to accommodate the price and Vrbo said that the money can't transfer to the other house and that I have to wait 3-4 weeks for the refund when the booking was for that same weekend so I don't know if they wanted me to pull out another 950$ out of no where and they bassically left me with nothing and took my money. It's so easy for them to take your money but you'll have to climb mountains to get your money back. The owner of the house has better hospitality and better customer service than Vrbo itself. Vrbo was costumer service does not service their costumers needs doesn't help out at all they are rude and they were also rude to the owner when he called. I'll never use Vrbo again.
During this COVID-19 crisis I was one of many who had to cancel my reservation for a rental in the Florida Keys. There was no reasonable return of my full payment, only the damage deposit, and communication with the owner stopped the minute I let them know I needed to cancel. VRBO has sent me emails about how they were incentivizing the owners to be reasonable and asking if I'd been treated that way, but absolutely no response when I told them about my experience.
I made a reservation and they took $197 out of my account and later that night it got cancelled. They promised I would get a refund but I have to wait 21 days. I made another reservation and they took $2,969 out of my account and the next day that got cancelled. Now they withdrew $3,166 out of my account and I have to wait 21 days to get them money back. Do not do business with them, they have very unprofessional business practices!
VRBO is strictly a way for vacation rental owners to sucker unsuspecting travelers to their properties. If there is any dispute, VRBO will NOT stand up for the traveler. Only the owner is protected and they can change their listing and cancellation policy AFTER you book a property. They were just horrendous in the Covid19 pandemic and people lost thousands of dollars. VRBO is impossible to deal with. Some owners are flexible and ethical, but I found one, Amy Lozen, who rents a penthouse condo at Sugar Beach Resort on Maui, an absolute nightmare. She blatantly told me she couldn't offer a refund or change my dates because she had to cover her losses. Buyer beware, many of her guests have contacted me about Amy as well. I have tons of emails and messages to Amy and VRBO, both of whom were uncaring about the outright theft by Amy Lozen. STAY AWAY!
Like everyone else, I was forced to cancel vacation plans. I had planned a trip to Vancouver Island. I was promised a full refund but the amount refunded was $200 short. It took me multiple attempts to get an explanation. I was told that the Canadian exchange rate changed and therefore I was out the $200 dollars American. How convenient for them. I will not be using these guys again.
I am very dissatisfied with this service. We booked it ourselves online and tried to cancel the same night when we found out that all the amenities were not available at this time. I was charged $100 for doing all that work myself and plus we bought the insurance and were told to contact someone else for that refund. I will never use this again and would not recommend to anyone. It is false advertisement and had we known that the amenities were not available like it said then we would have never booked to begin with... such a rip off! Easy money for them though and very expensive for cancelling immediately.
Property owner cancelled our reservation while we were en route, the day of check in. VRBO gave me a number to their "same day booking department". So I'm thinking they'll help us find another rental. Well, the number is for expedia. I guess vrbo/home away/expedia are all the same company. They wanted to put me in a hotel for 2 days, at my expense. That's it.
I ended up booking something in another town, at a higher cost, and am losing two days vacation. Unbelievable. Last time ever using this company.
If you like getting bent over and taking it up the backside, then, by all means, book with HomeAway/VRBO! Their response to the COVID-19 pandemic is appalling and their "customer service" during this time is a joke. Instead of stepping up and giving customers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic full refunds, like their competitor Air BnB did, HomeAway/VRBO just threw their hands up in the air and said "F#$k it, we're not doing $hit. Take it up with the property manager." Guess what the property manager's response was? "F#$k that noise, I'm not doing $hit."
Money ruled over common decency. If you book with HomeAway/VRBO you will get no support from them at all. Customer service is awful, the billing department is awful, policies are asinine. I will NEVER do business with these crooks again. Head my warning, and that of many others, and stay far far away from HomeAway/VRBO!
With covid - 19, VRBO did NOTHING TO REFUND ANY OF OUR MONEY. They leave it up to the property owners, who of course, would not offer any sort of refund or be flexible at all. VRBO has no repercussions for owners who offer no refund during this time. 1400 down the drain. AWFUL COMPANY WOULD NEVER BOOK HERE EVER.
Due to pandemic, I cancelled my stay... And as there guidelines, I cancelled in advance to ensure 100% refund... Well, the property owner ignored me and VRBO will not do anything about it! Like a broken record, they asked me to contact the property owner, who ignored my phone calls and emails... If this was a legit business, they would not allow criminals to use their site... The site stated 100% refund if cancelled by certain date... That makes VRBO responsible...
Vrbo is refusing to cancel a reservation even though, the city where the reservation is located is closed to outside visitors. Please do not use this company. Their customer service just gives you the run around.
VRBO has done nothing to assist people like us that had paid for a rental prior to having the Covid issue close down beaches, restaurants, etc. Our family is out $2500 and VRBO claims that there is nothing they can do to assist. As a long time user of VRBO, I am incredibly disappointed and will never use their service again.
I have worked with VRBO for years as an owner. Once you get into their system, it is hard to get out as you lock in all of your reservations. Besides all of their hidden fees, they have an awkward and hard to use reservation system. They never own up to their errors. An example, when someone damages your property, I rarely charge the client. One time out of a 100, I submitted a damage request of half the damages a party did and VRBO switched it from the damage refund and charged me the $55 of $188 of damages that occurred and refunded their entire deposit. When I showed VRBO the error, they insisted I submitted it wrong, though it is obvious there is no way I could have done what they said. Thus, I was out $110. It might seem small, but this is consistant with this organization.
Answer: There are many problems with listing with VRBO/HomeAway. The 1st is that it is the largest company of it's size. While that may mean that you get more exposure, you also have more competition for getting your listing seen. For example, your listing could be # 300 out of 2,000. Most people don't want to search that far to find what they want because they can usually find something else sooner. In order to get a higher listing, you must pay more. I pay the highest rates they have for my properties in TN # 191351, 189535, & 289723, i. E. over $1,500 each. Listing position is also based on a number of criteria which they mandate. We have no control over some of those criteria. For example, listing position is based on whether or not guests USE VRBO/HomeAway on line booking. Initially,. VRBO/HomeAway required that we OFFER on line booking in order to maximize our listing position, so I offered it. VRBO/HomeAway then changed their criteria & now guests must USE on line booking in order or my listing position drops. I have no control over whether or not they USE VRBO/HomeAway & I don't recommend it for several reasons (more on that if you're interested). Listing positions are also determined by the number & quality of reviews. Again, I have no control over whether or not someone writes a review nor how they rate a property. What may be a 5 Star for someone may only be a 3 Star for someone else, but I'm at their mercy to provide a review & to rate it well. There are many other factors that go into listing position. As I said, I try to maximize what I can & If I'm luck, my property will be listed around 50/200. I get much better response from FlipKey by TripAdvisor. As I mentioned, I pay VRBO/HomeAway over $1,500 for each property. I Pay FlipKey by TripAdvisor about $450/property for #'s 6588094, 2386143, & 3746421 & get much better results. The problem with FlipKey is that it's hard for someone to search for a specific property using the property #.
Answer: VRBO will not help anymore with anything. Homeaway bought them and there is no personal contact with owners anymore until they pay through the site. I don't know about negative reviews. Never see any. If there was a way to avoid VRBO and Someway I would do it; but they have the corner on the VACA rental market now.
Answer: I have the same problem. I don't think they have any.
Answer: Vrbo will NOT get involved in any way. They will not arbitrate on anyone's behalf. They are strictly an advertising website. Carefree travel insurance & all the other stuff is just to make renters feel more comfortable to rent. They hardly ever pay out if there is a real problem. You can sue in small claims court, in the city & state you rented in. The only defense you have is if you paid with a credit card to do a charge back, & even then its hard. You have to have documentation to prove you case. However, vrbo won't contest the chargeback if you can get your credit cad company to work with you. Best to leave a review that warns other renters to stay away. But vrbo approves the reviews before they are posted.
Answer: I have spoken with them so many times yesterday and today with no fix my problem. The number is 1-877-228-3145. I wish you better luck than I have had.
Answer: Absolutely nothing! Every change they make results in their making more money and owners making less. My bookings are down drastically. I would not sign up with VRBO.
Answer: Go with the standard listing if you have already paid. If not save your money and try homeescape.com. Homeaway/VRBO rolled out a new 9% service fee charged to your customers in addition to what you're already paying for. They did this without any warning to their customers. I found out after one of my repeat guests questioned the charge. I'm moving away from them and going with other options.
Answer: A: NEVER, EVER DEAL WITH ANY OWNERS OR PROPERTY MANAGERS THAT YOU HAVENT SPOKEN TO DIRECTLY. NEVER use any form of payment other than credit card. All CC's would refund you the money if you don't get the services. If they don't accept cards or allow payment through Homeaway, FIND ANOTHER PROPERTY OWNER WHO WILL or be prepared to take the chance. READ all reviews, if they don't have any you ARE taking a chance it's a scam or a dump (or a new property but be careful. NEVER make a large deposit EVER! VRBO has turned out to be reliable for us, never used Flipkey and AirBnB wouldn't use it - I want a large property not a room room share
Answer: Try airbnb to rent part of your home
Answer: Same issue for us. The house we rented had glowing reviews and when I tried to post an honest review it still has not been posted.
VRBO provides vacation rental listings by owner in the US and around the world.
