“3 good years with User Testing”

J G.
2/15/24

I have been very impressed with User Testing during the 3 years I have worked with them. The projects I've worked on have been very satisfying and fulfilling, and payment arrived exactly 7 days after the task was completed - just as promised. I have only had a couple of tasks in which the system let me down, and I have always been paid (at least partially) for my trouble. Recently, the wait time for payment has been changed to 14 days after task completion, but it was clearly communicated and seems to be working. My only real issue is with the survys that I can't get rid of, which appear on my list again as soon as I delete them. Also, a few that are completely irrelevant to me, but do not provide a 'non applicable' option. Very small issues compared to how much I enjoy working with User Testing.

“Usertesting is a scam! Beware of this fraudulent company!”

William S.

I have been using usertesting.com for some months now and I have completed several tests for various websites and apps. I have always followed their instructions and terms of service, and I have received positive feedback from the clients. However, on January 26th, 2024, I received an email from them saying that my account was suspended and all my funds were voided due to suspicious activity. They accused me of using multiple accounts to cheat the system. This is a complete lie and a scam. I have never done anything like that and I have proof of my identity and earnings. I tried to contact their customer support and appeal their decision, but they ignored me and refused to give me any explanation or evidence. They basically robbed me of $300 that I had worked hard for and wasted my many hours of testing. They are a dishonest and unethical company that does not care about their users or their clients.

I used User Testing for about 18 months and I used to make a regular £20-30 a week from them, tests were interesting and insightful, some were short and some involved a one on one interview which were higher paying. My rating on the site was 4.5 out of 5 after doing 301 tests and earning £3000, so all was good until at the end of December I stopped receiving any invites. I got in touch with User Testing but they sent me an automated response which did not answer any of my questions. I tried again and received the same response. In the end I gave up and cancelled my account as from looking at other reviews the same thing seems to happen to lots of people using the site. Its a shame they cannot give you a proper response to why they have stopped sending you tests.

You do make money off of this UserTesting (my average is $20-40/week). That's obviously not enough to live on, so don't expect it to be your main way to gain income or even your main side gig.
The only reason I'm writing a review is because I've had technical difficulties. Long story short, I took a survey using my iPhone. When I got to the last question, the test unexpectedly stopped recording and failed to upload. This happened a second time after, but before it happened the first time, I could take tests provided for phone just fine. So, that means $20 have already gone down the drain. BUT I have made $140 off this website in the past three months, meaning I really only made $120 with the $20 lost. This is because I am able to take desktop surveys with no complications whatsoever. What I have decided to do from now on is ONLY take their desktop surveys because after losing $20, I'm not willing to have happen a third time.
The reason UserTesting, which is a 100% real website, has such negative reviews on SiteJabber is because UserTesting customers have too high expectations for this website. They come in believing this will be their main side gig. But I came in knowing this wouldn't be the case since it takes such a long time for websites to find the correct pool of customers that will best suit their needs.
Did anyone else experience difficulties taking the tests?

Tip for consumers:
Do NOT make UserTesting your main side gig. If you do, you'll end up dissapointed.

I really like Usertesting and have been a tester since 2017. I've seen good changes and not so good. For instance, having a limited profile and that profile does not get referenced it seems. Qualifying gets tedious when if the question was a profile statistic you wouldn't have to take the qualifier. Not a fan for the new update as the old system was much more pleasing to the eyes. Still the best for UX testers imo.

I've gotten a few tests to do. They seem to come in waves. I'll get a few and then I hear nothing for a while and then this week I've gotten about 4 so far. I check out websites which takes me a few minutes and I get $1 usd in PayPal. I've never gotten more than that! I guess it's something...

I haven't used UserTesting a whole lot, only done a few tests. That is, the peek test that every tester receives upon account creation, and a few other tests. I got paid for my tests (3$ for the peek test and $10 each for the others, so $23 in total.) and the site seems to be a legitimate way to earn some extra cash. There are a bunch of reviews claiming the site to be a scam because of a lack of tests, or because of screener questions which seem to always deny you.

This isn't true, but let me explain. The way UserTesting distributes tests is through demographics. Companies are looking for certain kinds of people. Maybe they live in a certain area, or subscribe to a certain service, or maybe they have a certain kind of lifestyle. These demographics influence how many tests you get. Unfortunately, there's no real way to know whether your particular demographics will lend themselves to getting you a bunch of tests; they're a crap-shoot. The website even acknowledges that the amount of tests you get will vary, depending on these same demographics.

This doesn't mean that UserTesting is a scam, just that there aren't many companies looking for people from your demographic. It sucks, but what can you do? There are plenty of other ways to make money from home, so the reactionary responses caused by your bad luck aren't warranted.

You may complete a test but if they don't like what you say, they will give you a low rating, come up with bogus justification and not pay up.
Bleh, shame on you.
